taking anti-depressants: experience with citalopram 20mg

  • Hi!
When I was prescribed Citalopram 20mg I went online to try and find as much information/personal experiences as possible and there was just nothing recent, and not much at all. So hopefully this helps people who are considering medication/anti depressants, have just started taking Citalopram, or are having the same thoughts and feelings as I am.

I have been on citalopram for two years now. I was so scared of being on meds and terrified of the side effects. I could not cope in the end so I gave them a try. Luckily my doctor gave me every information possible. SSRIs, and celexa, have a high success rate but you need to find what’s right for you. They aren’t addictive and have no long term side effects so you can take them for years. Anyways, know that some people have initial side effects like heightened anxiety, shivers, nausea, dry mouth etc. Trust in the process because I had EVERY side effect and I had to ride it out. They ended up stopping a few weeks in and after that I started to feel normal. All my aches were gone I stopped having palpitations and could be me. No more attacks and I had started off on 10mg the lowest dosage. I guess my anxiety isn’t as bad as others but I’m grateful. Two years later because of this whole pandemic I found myself more anxious and worried so I asked for a higher dosage 20mg. Know that these medications are bad at the start but get way better. Ride it out.

@@dani6496 sorry for the late reply. Getting more anxious while on the medication is typically normal. Palpitations are a result of your anxiety most likely and they should go away. Once all your side effects start going away it’s a sign the meds are working. Give it more time. In 2-4 most of the side effects should fade away. After that it’ll be easier

Thank you for the video, it’s really nice to get an honest review of the medication. I’ve recently been prescribed it and I really tried to dodge this for years, which makes me feel quite sad that I didn’t get help sooner but I’ve always been one of those types of people to not address clear issues and think I’m fine. I now feel like I have clarity and I’m at a turning point in my life.

Been on Citalopram for social anxiety/depression for a month, started on 10mg for 2 weeks and now gone to 20mg. The only side effects I've had is a slight loss of appetite and not sleeping, but that was helped by taking them in the morning rather than the evening. It's not a miracle cure, but I do feel a lot more in control and it's a relief to finally feel a bit more 'normal'.
The only way you can know if it will work for you is to try it. Medication affects everyone differently.

Antidepressants saved my life. Citalopram worked the best for me. Been on it for 5 years now. Tried to stop twice but couldn't. Usual dose is 20mg. I've become very pragmatic towards it. If I have to take them for the rest of my life so be it. Better than that hell I experienced during several depressions. I did (group)therapy too. I'm 64 now. Thank you for your testimony.

@@chrismullan7191 I'm sorry for your losses. Usually it takes about four weeks to feel much better without the side effects, cause your body adapts to it. For panic in the beginning I also took a light dose of 0.5 mg xanax (alprazolam) only when necessary. Be patient and don't give up, but allow yourself to grief at the same time. I took my first pill yesterday of Citalopram. After I took it I had a mini panic attack. I think I was just scared because I didn’t want to be addicted to anything or have to deal with getting sick off of it. I lost my best friend two years ago to her being a fake b****. It was really hard for and it still is. She was like a sister to me. Loosing all my friends and my job really brought me down. Not being in college and not being able too because I don’t have a co-signer has made my life hell. It’s now Covid and I’ve been applying to jobs for a good year now and still have heard anything back. I’m hoping this pills help me feel motivated. I’m currently sitting in my bed as I didn’t go to work today because I have no motivation. Clothes piling up, bills, stress. I’m dealing with extreme anxiety to the point I can’t leave my house. I’m happy you made this video. I’m hoping that when the time comes I’m happier and that they can wean me off the pills.

The only symptoms I got was decreased appetite, slight nausea and I felt very tired but that only lasted for about a week and the symptoms started to clear up, please don’t be put off by the side effects, I almost stopped taking citalopram after 2 days but I convinced myself to stick to them for atleast a month and honestly that was the best decision of my life, I can actually live my life normally now, my mindsets improved and I’m a lot more organised, my heads a lot more clearer and I feel so much happier, so even if you may feel bad for the next few days, you’re doing this to benefit your future self and you’ll be so grateful that you started them. I know starting new medication can be scary but your doctor wouldn’t of prescribed you them if they thought you’d have a bad reaction, also it’s really important to be patient with the meds, after about two weeks I felt better but I was still getting panic attacks, I only felt the full effects at about 6 weeks, but you might start to feel them at 4 weeks, you’ve got this

Been on Citalopram for a couple of months now after work induced anxiety after working all through the lockdown period, covering for the whole department I ran.
For the first few weeks I just felt like I had the side effects and not the benefits, but over the next couple of weeks the side effects lessened and I felt a load better. If I was to describe the improvement I would say that your problems don’t disappear, it’s just that they go to the back of your mind rather than being the only thing you can think of.
I also felt that listening to podcasts of people discussing things of interest (hobbies/comedy) really helped, it stopped me thinking about my problems and kind of felt like being in a pub conversation. I also used them to go to sleep to with earphones in.
Exercise helped too, I’m on week 3 of the couch to 5k plan and that has given me a small target to aim for, whilst only taking up 30 minutes 3 times a week.

I love this video, it was so raw and so helpful, thanks for sharing. I've been on citropram for 2 weeks and have felt negative side effects so I'm not sure if it gets better in the 4th or 5th week. People generally say they feel foggy or drowsy on them which I experienced as well but symptoms of anxiety have reduced. I recommend medication to anyone who has tried other solutions first (psychologist etc.). It helps but there is a steep rough patch in the first few weeks as its effects are not immediate.

Actually doctors really don't know what they're doing when it comes to antidepressants. SSRIs like Citalopram increase the amount of Serotonin in the brain. But there's still no conclusive proof that depression is caused by a lack of Serotonin. So when a doctor prescribes you an SSRI, they have no idea what effect it will have on you. It's a case of try and hope for the best. But my fear is that they fuck me up more than before I started them!!

I'm on this for anxiety too, 10mg. I've been on it for about 9 months. I actually should probably schedule a check in with my doctor lol. For me it definitely toned down my anxiety which was huge. It still lingers underneath the surface, it's part of who I am but it's not as prominent. I no longer feel like I chugged 10 cups of coffee at once when interacting with another human being. That part of me was a huge aggravation and I was so sick of not knowing how to control it. Other than that one thing though it hasn't helped in any of my other struggles. I still struggle with fatigue, motivation, and focusing on tasks for long periods of time. A part of me is glad it really didn't make much of a difference. I was hesitant about going on medication because I didn't want to become numb or confused about who I am. At the same time though it's kind of a disappointment. You go through all this waiting to see how it affects you. I just was expecting more from it I guess. You'd think antidepressants would give a person more energy.. I'm just sharing my experience so far. I'm on a really low dose so maybe I need to up it. Planning on making a doctor's appointment, like tomorrow lol.

the other day i went to the doctors for ibs pain, and told him i’ve been going through a lot. i definitely think i’ve been depressed, and have always struggled with anxiety but especially the past few years and in covid it’s gotten extremely bad. i feel like i’m just not myself, but i’m still experiencing stomach pain a bit, acid reflux symptoms, etc. and a lot of my anxiety causes my stomach issues, but also then proceeds to make it worse. listening to meditation & healing sound hz is really helpful, but hasn’t seemed to help me in the long run. i got prescribed celexa and am starting on tuesday, but the anxiety of getting worse before getting better, and for 4 whole weeks, the uncertainty of it all is really hard to deal with and i’m debating doing it at all. let me know if you had a similar experience, or if you went in for stomach pains induced by stress and anxiety, and what your experience was. i’m only 16, and reading horror stories of withdrawal symptoms, and all that stuff is making me extremely anxious to even start them. if someone could respond it’d be very helpful ❤️

I’ve taken citelopram for many years and it really helped, I came off them beginning of 2020 and then Covid hit plus a lot of other issues just hit me, I tried everything I could vitamins , walking, working , trying to be positive and it just didn’t work , so I want to the Dr and started agin I’m 3 days in and starting to feel better already , glad I’ve made the decision to try and do something about my situation, give it a go and see how you go ❤️

I feel like I need to take meds. I have been feeling depress since I lost my baby this year on October 4th. He was still born. I have other children to think about and a Husband so I thought I was going to be okay? Turns out I can't stop thinking and I cry every time I think about it. My heart💔 😢 and am always sad. And my children always say, Are you Ok, wiping my tears and putty a fake smile saying Yes am Ok but deep down am not. I excersie to see that helps but when coming home am always feeling Low and there will be days I sleep 😴💤 all day an am up all night and I try not to sleep during cuz I have a toddler to take care Not in school yet and I go to church and pray and that helps a lot but than when I come home from church these symptoms 😭😔 come back. If anyone can give me advice on what to do. Am going to therapy but I feel really bad afterwards because I keep being reminded about the situation of loosing a baby and sit in my car for hours crying 😭. And am getting frustrated 😡 of feeling this way. Never take meds. Just for sleep out of that and all I want to do is be the person I was before the situation. Can anyone give me advice of what meds. What should I take to cure my depression because am afraid am going to loose my Husband and I want a better future for my family. Take care God 😇 Bless.

Did the side effects disappear after you stopped the medication?!

I was nauseas alot, I cried alot, I was moody, and I had many brain zaps. Honestly that's all I can remember, I should have wrote the process down. It all lasted over 2 months only and I thought it would be longer. I still think my body is still getting adjusted because my legs and arms get numb alot. But for the most part, I am happy to be off them. I was very forgetful when I was on the pills. I would have more anxiety attacks and I feel like they just messed me up more. I wasnt me. I feel like I can fight depression in a different way now and I am excited to do it naturally. I know I will fight depression.

Cirtalapram from my experience is for people with panic episodes so it calms/ numbs the brain to block out anxiety and depression. SSRIS and great for depression and anxiety.

Cariprazine is a completely different pair of shoes. It's an antipsychotic while Citalopram is an SSRI, hence an antidepressant. Your med is effective at flattening the highs and lows, not so much making you happier all around. With depression, you basically always feel low. When mania is involved, you don't want to make these worse.

honestly theres been a few times throughout my medication journey where ive still wanted to die, unfortunately they dont fix everything! but they can really assist and really help especially if you’re doing other things to try help yourself etc. a bit hard rn with the pandemic. if they’re not working for you after some time make sure to contact your doctor, there are many other options out there just make sure they know how you’re doing!

I've been taking citalopram (10mg) daily for three weeks and I had a huge increase in anxiety after three days. It was so bad I went to hospital. I live in a rural area and my neighbour kindly drove me to hospital at 4.00am on the day. I wanted an injection to calm me and/or advice on how to stop the tablets. They talked to me instead which calmed me down and I dediced to continue. Since then I've had periods of high anxiety for a few hours here and there, the last few days it has worsened again (so from about day 18 to 21), and I sometimes go for a walk as I can't sit still and have considered going to hospital again but haven't yet. My doctor has prescribed me valium and another anti-anxiety medication to get me through. I am so hoping this anxiety surge is temporary, from what I've read 'the anxiety stops after a few weeks' and 'it can take six weeks for my system to fully get used to it' - so all I have to do is wait. Can people reading this, who had anxiety early on when taking citalopram - which later went away - please comment on their experience, and also how long it does take to go. Many thanks.

I took 2 different SSRIs for about a year, my male anatomy never recovered. Guys, weigh out your options first before you take meds. Diet and exercise work way better than psychoactive drugs
