All the dresses reflected the personality of each bride at the time. All I thought were beautiful in their own way. I so enjoyed watching this video.

Grace Kelly. Perfection. She raised the bar on "Elegant Bride". Pristine perfection. A rare jewel. Serene, full of poise, class, dignity. Her whole wedding ceremony was exquisitely elegant.

Grace Kelly all the way ... Meghan Markle needs to spend a few hours watching all she can on how an American actress married a royal and became such a wonderful Princess, much loved by the people of Monaco .. it might reduce all the nastiness going on about The Duchess of Sussex

Back in the days of the seriously stylish bride, regardless of what type of wedding they had....Most like Grace Kelly but there were also other beautiful brides dressed to suit their body type, wedding type, their era etc. The fishtail style looked nit quite right on her... Tall big statuesque woman in a mermaid tail get up? Fine. Curvey woman, any size or height dressed in a fistail style, even if slim? No, I don't think so. This style is for the tall slim, type with few, if any curves. The style gives her curves she lacks. The Depression era ones looked drab, as expected. Some old brides from that era tell me white weddi g dress fabric was hard to get, very expensive. My owmotber said they opted for a dress that looked good, not white a d which could be used again for important social events after marriage for many years, as a "Best dress". Latin brides of that era added a white lace mantilla veil for a first marriage. Widows remarrying wore a black lace mantilla. The white lace one was for first time brides and single girls to wear to church. Once married, you rose in social status and were allowed to wear a black lace ma tilla veil and expected to do so, at relevant occasions calli g for women to cover hair eg church. The Anglo brides of that era sometimes wore fasci ator type hats with cineray netting. These were also used again later on eg go to the Melbourne Cup horse racing carnival that requires formaattire, even in pouri ng rain or summer sweltering heat. Whilst tbe big gowns look nice, tbey are a waste of mo ey, though some smart brides did alter ordye theetc, to wear to speciaballs etc. I saw some of tbese out in rural Australia. But, even back then, the rich and snobby would not attend such a ball in a co verted wedding dress or a bridesmaid dress, tbough many did. Tbe rich and hauggty would nit attend local cou try events where such fucould be had, even in converted weddin g dress eg to celebrate your weddi g anniv ersary, which required months of dieting, to prove you could still fit into it, despite babies etc. The rich went to borin g city social events tbey never talked about and nobody was interested in such urban parties etc they attended, anyways... But, si nce the afflyent Melbourne high society required an expensive new set of attire for every new social occasion, the rural rich attending these ended up donating their exclusive gowns worn only once, to Melbourne charirities. Cou try locals would then take a trip to buy tgese second hand, alter them and pass them off as "new stylish city clothes" as they tried to put on urban airs and vraves. But we all k ew tbey had to milk cows, shear sheep, grow beans, catchfish etc to live, like the rest of us. But it was fun because such dresses ended up bei g passed from woman to woman in the locality, to shine in socially, continually added to, remodelled etc. And e e tuallendi g up as dress up costumes in schools for kids to wear at school concerts. Nothing was wasted. No rubbish goi g to landfill or pollutioproblems. Because people had too little to produce pollutin g rubbish. They made do. Even tbe rich complained about having to have a new expe sive kutfit to attend some exclusive event tbeir ptesence was expected at. But, since they were boun d by a rigid code of what their socioeconomic class deemed to be "appropriate" ie very strict dress rules, manners, staionary use, language etc, they simply had to co form and buy yet another costly silk dtess, hat, kid gloves or whatever. It is now commo n for even affluent urban women to vintage shop for clothes in local country second hand charity stores wbere they vet a thrill over the old "treasures" they find eg old mangey moth eatecrud dati ng back to the war era etc that no local decent country woman wouldbe seen dead in.But,even as rece tly as the 70's no local woman shopped for second clothes in an opportunity or charity store. It was shamed, though it was perfectly OK to wear hand me downs from friendly neighbours etc, as many did eg school uniforms were typically passed from family to family as each batch of kids grew up. It saved families a fortune and kids were always in proper uniform, even if poor. The rules for uniform etc were very strict, even in rough go ernment schools and eing out of uniform was serious. There was no excuse. Not even for very poor kids, who were often in old faded uniforms, but always wearing it. To avoid so. E kids being considered inferior to others, based on their clothing parents could orckuldnot afford. A very good idea, to create mire equality, less bullying, thuggery, put downs etc that often revolve around kids' fashions, especially nowadays And technology, holidays etc.

Did you expect the Depression era dresses to look drab so they were to you? Ginger Rogers' dress was wonderfully decorated and floating and the hat added a new touch, Ingrid Bergman's was classic, Joan Fontaine's was soft and cuddly and feminine. None of them is drab at all. My mother got married in the Depression and her wedding wasn't drab, either. She had a pretty dress she made herself, which she could do well because she was a home economics teacher. I do have trouble with some Roaring Twenties dresses because they can look really clunky and contrived. As much as I liked the Queen Mother, her wedding dress (not in this video) didn't flatter her at all. It made her look like she was wearing a Queen of Hearts-type costume. I wish we had a better view of Norma Shearer's dress but huge bouquets were in vogue so we may never know what that looked like.

While big shoulders is one of my least favorite fashions, I choose for first place the stars who opted to wear a suit out of respect for the suffering and sacrifice during the war rather than acting as if this is the time to splash out with a big party. They were saying that the world isn't all about me, me, wonderful me. Refreshing. :)

Antonina MacNeish And some did not. Such is life. It's hard to know what the dark side is of someone well-versed in assuming different characters. Of course Newman and Woodward stayed the course. The ones that make me sad are those separated from a loved one by early death. I hope they could cling to the memory of their time together rather than mourn forever over what they had lost.
