I started out as a motor mechanic in 1966, and things were SO damn simple back then !! All these electronics are an absolute nightmare , especially when they go wrong !
Warren, the first few times I watched you analyze and solve similar problems I was astounded and impressed. Now I am not astounded because I expect that you will with extremely high probability solve the problem. However, I am still very impressed every time because your talents and work ethics demand that respect. It is such a privilege to have you share your thought processes and actual work throughs with us. Thanks so much for that gift.
bravo. Warren I just spent an 2 hours of a driver's time replacing an air dryer and govenor valve, when all I had to do was bypass his air dryer, because his compressor is failing. diagnostics can be so tricky sometimes. job well done brother stay humble
Trouble shooting an electrical problem is like trying to find the end point of a circle, you know it’s there, but to find it is a quest that requires patience. Nice job sir. Thanks for the ride along sir.
You are the doctor of agricultural mechanics in America! This seems to be absolutely magnificent because America is huge. people must just say' CALL TH DOCTOR'
Warren,I was a painter at the Paint & Body shop as a Maintenance worker on the monorail cars. The work tractor pulls the monorail trains into the shop when the train shuts down. The work tractor has a Allison Transmission also & powered by a natural aspirated Caterpillar V-8 engine
Great commentary on troubleshooting and trying to do the rite thing for the customer. It’s amazing how overly complicated tractors have become, I guess that’s progress. Thanks for the videos. Appreciate your time and knowledge.
Man, trying to find those passive terminators on the older models are a nightmare. Always somewhere different. Fuse panel behind the speaker right side of cab left side of cab by the shifter by the instrument cluster up the right pillar behind the rock shaft on top of the engine. It's like Easter egg hunting.
Damn I love that comment, you got a have an oscilloscope to find that tinfoil, about 40 years ago I, worked in a GMC dealership my father was the shop foreman and he had a man work for him that was absolutely brilliant at electrical issues, I swear the man could smell corrosion inside of a wire and all the ever used was a multimeter and it wasn’t digital and a test light maybe some jumper leads
Your not guessing sir you are showing and sharing your years of experience and expertise as a master of your craft and clearly by the confednence and trust shown by your customer inturn with the same level of respect they have for you your experience and expertise as a master of your craft and word behind it speaks louder and clear as any program you may have or not have and you have no need to eat any crow
Know what you mean with intermittent electrical faults, nothing worse than one that's disappears half way through the diagnosis. Same with proprietary software as well, I work on every brand, model and vintage of forklift out there and you frequently haven't got the software at all and sometimes you do just have to 'roll the dice' and go with gut and intuition. Thankfully most the time your intuition is correct. Communication and good relationship with the customer is the most important thing in those situations 👍.
warren i do some diagnose of can line and i can tell you the real way is with an oscilloscope ,you see your signal exactly as it is and sometimes its just glitchs that screw things up ,it would be worth your while ,i know its not easy to start but after a while the time you loose is precious ,its a time saver in your diagnostic
It's almost impossible to find someone that is professional and knowledgeable to do this kind of diagnosis. It seams the young guys don't want anything to do with this type of work. The mindset of our country is changing fast.
Art it,s the exact same in the UK ,strange watching these kids growing up with zero ambition bitching about the world around them, but not willing to do anything to change it
Those intermittent electrical issue's really suck, and you end up wasting a lot of time trying to get the problem to repeat itself. Always a lift when you put out a video Warren, one of the best channel's on utube. A guy should have access to the software to fix any piece of equipment they own, and tech's should be able to purchase the shit to. When the dealer doesn't have a tech who can even diagnose, or repair stuff right, it just hurts the consumer. G-d bless you and the family.
Great video Warren!! Just had something similar to this on a 7530 premium, remotes not working and kept blowing fuse for sic controller. Ended up having to change main cab harness, never did find the short in old harness. But new harness fixed it. I was skeptical cause I like to find the problem to verify repair
Warren, even though those tires look low, it's actually requested that they're ran with at least 3 of the bars on the ground. Gives better traction and actually does less wear on the tires. I've said it before, I'll trust your honest mistakes over a lot of these so called mechanics of today Warren. It's a royal pain when someone else tears into to stuff and then they can't figure it out and pass it on to you. But, your knowledge always prevails Warren. Cheers :)
Up most respect what you do to keep those customers happy men like you are dying breed today very impressed you go that extra mile one hell of a technician
Have had my own nightmares with transmissions here lately 6110M jd actually the power quad specifically the o ring on the reverse piston , ton of work and time for a 3 dollar part. Jd has a tool for testing all the sensors and controllers jdg 10237 diagnostic box have to have service advisor, so bub if u have jd software tool is a life and time saver recommend 15 ext cable same part # as box p1 or p3 on end of number. Love the channel its kinda a crazy deal spend all day from before light until dark most nights then watch these vids to relax thank you
Hi Warren 😃 thanks for takin us along on the hunt for this electrical gremlin, these things are a pain in the ass at best of times ,compounded by quick fixes whith a bit of tinfoil, lol. Cheers mate, stay safe, best wishe's to you and your's, Stuart UK.
You are something else Warren absolutely spot on guy and I know everyone who has been watching your channel for a long time will agree with me. You could feed us so much crap and we as layman's who don't know but you are so good at what you do and Conscientious of what you are doing and what you tell us. Keep up the good work buddy .
You got there in the end warren . 👍👍👍👍 that's the trouble when you get wrong information. You know things are not correct Got on the right track in the end 👍👍
I was going to recommend a tin-foil-o-scope but a better choice might be an idiot-o-scope to id the previous high skilled workers that applied the tin foil in the first place. My Dad used to say (he was an A&P mechanic) "if you want to know where a wire goes in an aircraft, grab one end of the wire with your left hand, place your right hand ahead of your left, then repeat." This appears to work for tractors as well. Dad found aircraft diagrams notoriously inaccurate, especially after years of maintenance and upgrades. Love your videos.
This procedure is the only one that works, electrics, pipework etc, that and good lighting and constant diagrams whenever you come to a bulkhead ! you have absolutely no idea how often a flow turns into a return because of low attention to detail !
Hard enough to deal with electrical issues. Now you had to deal with someone tearing stuff apart before you and not knowing what is screwed up from them!
Pretty amazing how you can find the answers to problems especially after someone else has made a mess of things ,great job Warren I've said it before Wished you lived in our area Saskatchewan 🇨🇦 Safe travels. 🙏
I agree with Douglas Mayher Jr. It seems John Deere has forgotten the K.I.S.S. rule. I am so glad I am not in the businesses of running or repairing those things anymore. I'll take an antique tractor any day.
Once again operator error but who can blame them, that Command center display looked like a users nightmare. Probably need a pre-flight check list before operating these computer controlled tractors, nice catch on the oversight.
Had a 6430 premium with can issues last summer. Would randomly throw can codes and throttle would cut out. Finally found the terminator above engine was getting pinched by the radiator support when the tractor flexed.
you the best mechanic to go that far with anything is great, I was a crane operator for the oil field for a long time if you don't know your machine ,and a mechanic came out and worked on it , but if the operator just set on his ass and not get into what the mechanic was doing ,how would you know that what they did didn't put you (me) in a serious position of liability. great video.
Electrical, it's what separates the men from the boys in the mechanical world, mechanics are a dime a dozen, ones with good electrical skills are harder to find.
I realise those CAN terminators have to at end of the line, but they are a pain hiding all over the place, would be good if they had extra wires and brought them all to one or two accessible places
when you first started walking around the tractor you said there was one under the floor pan there that you knew but good things come to those that wait I guess lol
Can bus problems can alot of fun. I had combine last year that I had to take off the controllers off the can system to figure out what controller causing the problem.
Those 30 series are Notorious for can problems . Last one i worked on one there is one on the right hand side by the tires where the dryer is… it showed in service advisor one in the roof.. 🤔🤔
Wasn’t there a squabble with JD on Not letting farmers use other software , so they were the only ones to fix it, Bruce at PIttsburgh power had found that with Packar
Feel for you man I was chasing the same fault on a 6430 and I spent ages looking for it and it was the terminator under the left hand floor panel. I feel bad as I commented on last video and didn’t mention were they are sorry Warren
I've seen something like that before they blew the fuse and didn't have any around so they use tinfoil just to finish the job but forgot to put a new fuse in
Make sure the customer knows hours were double on the repair because you had to undo everything they did trying to fix it, makes sure they know foil on a fuse could have cost them lots of money up to the cost of the tractor and your hourly rate is 50% higher for putting their mess back together! Tell them to call you first to save money!
Wish you were closer got kubota 126x that has electrical glitch blows 5amp fuse to power shift after it gets up to temperature when you run rear scv like opening baler tailgate. Has something to do with hydraulic flow because if you pull scv handle slowly it doesn't blow? Pretty sure solenoid on top transmission but there are 17 switches and solenoids there.
Ok,I am not the sharpest crayon on the box. Dosen't a resistor creat heat while it is doing it's job lowering voltage??Isn't said resistor subject to burning out like a light bulb filament??? Then why in the Hell hide them all over the place like an easter egg hunt!! Thanks Warren for your channel I don't work on new stuff and probably won't but you have taught me alot with your videos. Thanks.
Nothing like parts all tore out of the machine, hate that crap. When you take the stuff apart, it's a heck of a lot easier to figure out what's going on, and easier to put back together. Them guy's are rough on shit out there, i have never seen equipment look so beat up. People don't care when they ain't paying for it. I feel bad for the owner's, because their stuff just won't last as long without proper maintenance and care. Do the owner's ever chew these guy's out for not checking the machine's before jumping in to use them. A quick visual inspection, checking fluids, and greasing everything would go a long way, along with regular fluid and filter changes.
I have been working on allison transmissions for probably 20 years now and I have seen every problem imaginable. There is essentially 5 generations of control systems used by allison transmissions and the diagnostics vary based on the generation. Range inhibited happens any time the computer detects any type of serious fault. When range inhibited happens it essentially is placing the transmissions in a neutral state to protect the transmissions from further damage. The problem may have no relation to the range switch. They switched to the internal switch due to all the problems with the external switches. I have seen them with range inhibited due to a single solenoid wire grounded out between the computer and the transmissions or even problems with the internal wiring. I was working on a allison 2400rds in a ford 750 and it was range inhibited with no other faults and it turned out it had a speed senor problem. A bushing inside the transmissions was completely worn out which allowed the reluctor to come in contact with the speed sensor which wore the end off of the speed sensor. A throttle position sensor can also cause a range inhibited issue, I was working on a 80 ton crane that had a big cam 400 cummins with a electronic allison ht741 which uses a remote throttle position sensor with a cable connected to the throttle on the injection pump. Allison has a built-in neutral drop protection system that range inhibits the transmission because it believes the throttle is open past idle. Make sure you check out the throttle position sensor data, watch live data without the engine running and push the throttle slowly to make sure it has a smooth throttle position sweep throughout the range. Throttle position issues and speed sensor issues are probably the number one cause of having the range inhibited and there is a good chance that there will be no codes present because it is not seeing anything else wrong except that conditions are not being met to go into gear.
You don’t have to have the scope to find high resistance in the circuit, 😁 - just a light bulb or a “load master”! Heck - scope probably will not even show you the “echoing” of the BUS when terminators are bad. It only can show you if your CAN signal is all screwed up and out of whack. Like you have bad module somewhere.
When users cannot find a correct fuse. Tin foil to the rescue. Trouble is. Users never replaced the correct fuse or install a bigger fuse. I had A customer who had multiple gadgets into their cigar outlet. The customer stated. It's blowing fuses. I told the customer. You have A huge current load. You need to remove all of them. Use only 1. She bitched saying she needed all of them for her NEEDS. I told her. Well good luck. You will either melt your wiring harness if you keep installing a bigger fuse. I cannot help you.
I feel sorry for mechanics of todays versions of tractors. I'm seeing so much electronics crammed into tractors and nests of hydraulic lines squeezed into handlers that repair is going to be long, full of effort and frustration and costly. I've not even mentioned how manufacturers are pushing modern engines to high performance levels. Sure materials science has advanced but longevity will be a factor in those. I'm kinda glad I'm older and won't have to put up with repairing future cr*p.

It is an educated guess based on symptoms and past experiences.

Nice to see you back busting your hump 🐪 🚜🤣THANKS for the video Warren
Does that balewagon have a 2 speed rear axle? I remember The one we had, the range inhibited light would come on when that rear axle wouldn’t shift
7330 exact same problem...$6000.00 later local dealer finally fixed it 🤦🏽♂️also updated software and seems to have speeded the computer
👍
Ah yes.. the oops factor.. working hard and doing a simple easy thing that you forget to undo causes more trouble than it's worth..

Good info
dog might have worms when they do that
Warren you still have the John Deere 6170 in the shop torn down?
You don’t have to have the scope to find high resistance in the circuit, 😁 - just a light bulb or a “load master”!
Heck - scope probably will not even show you the “echoing” of the BUS when terminators are bad. It only can show you if your CAN signal is all screwed up and out of whack. Like you have bad module somewhere.
a cheap scope will show bus termination issues but you need to know how to look at it rise/fall times and duty cycles. its async data by the way
@@K_Hansen For a diy duty scope any suggestions?
Why do these green and yellow things have the bits you need to access to carry out repairs always sited in the most awkward places.
" gotta have an awe silly scope to find tinfoil " 🤣🤣🤣🤣 that or hold your mouth just right. 🤩
good vid warren
Those Deere tractors are great for tire guys. The toe or Ackerman is wrong.
