    Incredibly helpful. Thank you!
    Steps In A Nutshell:
PART ONE - CREATE CIRCLE PATH
    1. Use ellipse tool to create a 1:1 fixed ratio circle expanding from center
    2. Hit enter to apply selection (see marching ants surrounding circle)
    3. Go to Paths tabs and choose "selection to path" icon (red oval)
    4. Select NONE
PART TWO - CREATE CURVED TEXT FOR TOP HALF OF CIRCLE
    5. Use text tool. Click on canvas to type text of chosen size/font
    6. On the text layer on the Layers tab, right click and choose "TEXT ALONG PATH"
    7. Turn text layer off (eyeball button) and then click to activate background layer
    8. Create new transparent layer above the background layer. Click on it to activate it.
    9. Go to paths tab. Click curved one (not the circle) and hit "Path to Selection" icon (red square). Marching ants around curved, fill-less text.
    10. Change FG color to choice. Hit Edit --> Fill With FG color
    11. Select NONE
PART THREE - MOVE THE TOPMOST CURVED TEXT INTO POSITION
    12. With curved (not circle) PATH activated and middle Layer (the one you just made above the background layer) selected, click the ROTATE tool and drag into position
PART FOUR - FLIP THE TEXT SO IS READABLE ON THE BOTTOM PART OF THE CIRCLE
    13. Activate circular path (bottom one) on the Paths tab. Middle Layer should be active.
    14. Choose Flip tool with the PATHS tool option (looks like bezier curve handle) and VERTICAL selected
    15. Click on the canvas (it looks like nothing happened, but something DID happen)
PART FIVE -- CREATE CURVED TEXT FOR BOTTOM HALF OF CIRCLE
    16. On Layers tab, click the topmost layer (with the original text on it) and choose TEXT ALONG PATH
    17. Create new transparent layer above the background layer. Click on it to activate it.
    18. On Paths tab, choose current path (just above the bottom one which is a circle) and hit the "Path To Selection" icon (red square)
    19. Change FG color to choice. Hit Edit --> Fill With FG Color
    20. Select NONE
PART SIX -- MOVE BOTTOMMOST CURVED TEXT INTO POSITION
    21. With curved PATH activated and the new layer you just created selected (just above background layer), click the ROTATE tool and drag into position. Make sure that the LAYER tool option (sort of looks like a monitor) is selected on the tool options for your ROTATE tool.

Edgar Alegre For GIMP beginners this can be a little hard at first but with some experience you'll have no problems doing it. I always try to encourage my subscribers to check out Inkscape when it comes to text along path. You can go to my second channel PhotoAdvanced2 where I make Inkscape tutorials and search my channel for text along path :)

  • @a58geek
    @a58geek 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

A very good tutorial in general. This is my 1st time looking at trying to do this (text along a path) for any program (except maybe AutoCAD, and that was over a decade ago now), and it seemed to go a bit fast (but I'm over 50 :"> ). Also, you did not identify by name some of the tools/features you selected (or I missed it the 1st go-round). I'm sure that if I watch it several times, pause it at times, go full-screen, and cross-reference it with some typed-out tutorials, I will "get it" soon enough.
This vid will shorten my learning curve on a number of things. So, many thanks. I really liked seeing the various alignment tools at work, as well as the general process of creating various layers, etc. For that, the speed of the vid was excellent, to see things done in a more "real-time" pace.
I'm just now really getting into GIMP, and looking forward to it. I've been frustrated in the past because I knew there had to be a better way to align things, etc., it is just that there is so many tools and stuff to choose from. :-o Thanks too for the reference to Inkscape, I will for sure check that out.
    bud

Bud Isitt Hi, appreciate your comment. I think that if you are just getting started with GIMP, you should watch my beginners' guide tutorials. They focus on all of the features and tools in GIMP in a lot of detail. Once you go through them, things will become familiar and even easy to do. I have 159 beginners guide videos so far. I also have plenty of other GIMP tutorials where you can pick up additional tricks and knowledge. There are very few things that I haven't covered in my beginners' guide so if you have the time feel free to explore my channel :)

Useful, thank you. Although I didn't realise my circle must be further away from the top and bottom edges, as I was thinking the text would be on the circle line itself, and had to redo my circle.

For people having trouble aligning the text to path (i.e. text is above the path), the text placement is based on the text box size. Reduce the text box to be just around the text. Or change Box to Dynamic in the Tool Options.

Thank you for the tutorial! It is very clear to understand. I have one problem though.
If i write the text, everything is fine, when i rotate, all good. But when i move the text, the outline stays in the original position, while the filler moves to the location of my choice.
Could you help me out here? I have done the exact same steps as in the video.

Thank you for an absolutely brilliant tutorial! It took me a few attempts to get it right, but that was down to my failings not yours. I was asked to make some Toy Story themed round stickers for my Nephew's upcoming 5th birthday in a couple of weeks time. I had no problem designing the stickers but I wanted to put "Thank you for coming to my party!" around the top of the sticker but it turned out to be a lot easier said than done. My EXACT sentiments.
Can't frigging believe what I was watching!!! Just to curve a frigging text! Un-f****** believable.
If I remember, with Acorn, its just a couple of steps you can easily recall.
      This is ridiculous.

  • @klam77

finally got it. some really deep concepts you have presented all in one: layers, selection and paths. it helps you master a BIG portion of GIMP!
I am able to do it in different order:
    1) create circle
    2) circle to selection (hit enter)
    3) create text
    4) choose circle path and "selection to path"
    4) text along path
    5) choose circle path
    6) flip vertical affects paths
    7) right click text; text along path
This provides BOTH curved texts in background layer, then I can create new layer and move selection to it and apply color!! This works conceptually better for me! Great video.

Great tutorial! :) This is most certainly better than the 'text-circle' feature. (Although it does require a little bit more effort.) The *only* thing I didn't like about the tutorial is your use of 'this' and 'that'. I was following the tutorial with GIMP open (which is the only way I can learn these things) and I would have to open the window and go back to see what you meant by 'this'. It's not that big of an issue, just a suggestion. :) +1

This is a great tutorial. Everything seems to go well, but there is one step that I cannot do properly when trying to follow the instructions:
I create a text and click "Text along Path". In my case, the text does not go along the path. Instead, it will be put _above_ the path, and that is not what I wanted. (I could just move it along the path with the "Move tool", but then the text would be along a bigger circle, so it wouldn't bend so much.) Could you help me with this problem?

I'm having trouble with the text placement, for some reason the top text will appear along the top of the circle path, and the bottom text will appear along the inside of circle. This makes for asymmetrical design and size, is there a setting or step I am missing that might be causing this?

Loved the tutorial but I have a question...once I've filled the text in and removed all the outlines and guides, the text appears blurry. How can I fix this? Thanks! :)

How do I get gimp to show tool options? All I have is the basic toolbox, and under dockable dialogs there is no Tool Option, only Tool Presets, which is not the same thing...

Hey, I'm using gimp 2.8 on a mac. After I do path to selection and try to fill in the color with the bucket tool, it won't let me fill it in. Any ideas as to why this is?

Followed until Text. Click on canvas, Text box comes up w no font named. I choose font, then attempt to write. Since the first letter I want to put in is "C", it immediately closes the Text tool and opens Clone. If I use another letter, like "G", it shows the letter, then switches to another tool, without allowing any additional writing. Frustrating for a learner...
