This is a pretty decent overview, the only info missing is an explanation of the AF systems relative to the shooting modes. Getting ones head around the following will help to better understand the AF systems across the 80D. 1. The Basic (dummy) Shooting Modes are limited to AI Focus mode with 45pt AF auto. You cannot select different AF modes or AF points when using the Basic (dummy) shooting modes (A, CA, SCN, Filters). The AF in these shooting modes is fully automated...point and shoot, the camera will determine what AF mode and points are used. 2. All three AF modes and all four AF point options are available in the Creative/Advanced shooting modes (P, Tv, Av, M, B, C1/2). If you are missing AF point options, check they have not been disabled. Orange menu...C.fn II: Autofocus, Option 8 'Select AF Area Select Mode'. Tick them all. 3. The above is applicable to shooting stills through the viewfinder. If the LCD is out, and you are in a Creative/Advanced shooting mode, the AF points/options will display on the LCD when you press the AF Point selector button, otherwise you'll see them in the viewfinder. 4. Live View (shooting off the LCD instead of the viewfinder) uses a completely different AF system. In Live View there are three AF Methods (Face Tracking, Flexi Zone Multi, Flexi Zone Single). All three methods are available in all shooting modes. Press the 'Q' button in Live View to change the AF Method in the Basic (dummy) shooting modes, note you can also use touch AF (tap the screen) to set the AF point in Face Tracking or Flexi Zone Single. In Creative/Advanced shooting modes press the AF button to bring up your Live View AF options. They are the same as the Basic (dummy) mode shooting except that touch AF (tap the screen) can be used in all three methods and you can specify either One Shot or AF Servo. Remember it's still pretty much point and shoot in the Basic shooting modes except that you get touch focus in two of the Live View methods. 5. Know that your lens may impact on how many AF points are available. Most Canon EF-S lenses are fully compatible but if you are using EF lenses there may be some limitations. It's worth understanding all the above before messing with AF.
I tried to follow the Canon manual. Spent 1/2 hour on manual waste of time. Found you on TH-cam. Your tutorial was great learned what I wanted to know in 5 mins.
Joe. Your Videos are great. I have just bought the 80D and your tutorials are really helpful. Many Thanks. By the way, you sound like you come from Texas! We lived in California for a few years back in the Eighties.
Thank you Mike. I am actually from northern Mississippi, not to far from Memphis TN. But I have lived all over the USA at one point and even in SanDiego for about 4 years.
Hi Joe-one thing you may want to look into making a video about, is making changes in the servo AF tracking sensitivity for focusing through the viewfinder PDAF. Canon has setup "cases" to do this with the 7DII, but on the 80D there are no cases, you have to make changes one by one to each setting. This mostly applies to the bird in flight people (I hate it, I'll never do it, don't need to mess with servo AF sensitivity settings like they do defaults work ok for me) but maybe something to consider for you audience members who are attempting to make this camera more 7DII like for that purpose. Thank you! Good job as usual!
+Maxim Muir Yea I was looking and thinking about that the other night. It will be one I likely will make but at a later date. I am trying to do the ones I think the majority of 80D owners would likely be needing help on first. Then move into the C.Fn's at a later date.
Hi Is canon 80D compatible with Tamron 150-600mm G2 lens. Will it be possible to use all the autofocus AF features of camera on this lens for taking photos and videos ?
@joe My canon 80D has some focusing issues. It focuses acurately with center autofocus point but with off-center af points it back-focusing a bit . I have never heard off such strange problem before. Can this kind of problem occurs frequetly ? Should i go to canon sevice center ?
Yea that does sound odd, normally if one is out. They are all out.. I would definitely call them to enquire about the issue and see if it needs sending in. Cheers, Joe
I would just stick the camera into Av (aperture priority mode) and choose an aperture of f/8 and see if they gets enough of everyone into focus. Hope this helps.
Are you looking to learn how to use the Canon EOS 80D? In these video tutorials I step you through many of the functions and settings used in this camera. In this video I show you how to switch between the autofocus modes and set you focus points with the new Canon 80D. #canon #80d #dslr #camera #how_to #learn #tips
I have issues with the focus, my canon 80d seems like it never wants to focus and I can figure out why. Any suggestions? ITs brand new I have only used it for may 5 sessions. I have been trying to rack my brain around why the focus is few and far in between
Hey I found your video very helpful, but was wondering how to enable the grid in the viewfinder by itself not on the live screen.would be very happy if make tutorial on that:)!
How are you viewing that on the digital screen, I followed your steps but I can only view the AF points through my view finder. It says this function is not available during live view shooting
problem is getting the value of 80D face tracking WITHOUT it appearing in your video when connected to your computer. Manual is not convenient if you have teleprompter over your camera. I really appreciate how you showed how to open the various AF menus. Not a lot of videos are actually showing this
how i get the first screen that u r showing in ur video (from 0:11)...now am not getting this screen showing other info in another way...before it was showing exactly in ur video shows...but dont know how it chantges...could u tell me how can i recover the same...thanks in advance
Before it was in M manual mode and it shows excatly like ur first frame....but suddenly it doesnt show that way...now i re arrange all possible setting that perhaps create this..but no hope at all..i dont know how can i recall and what i did that leads to disappear...sir how can anyone get the first screen that camera shows all funtions...
Hi Joe, thanks for your videos tutorials, love the simplicity. can you make a tutorial on how to make long exposures photo during the day without no nd filter. Theres a lot of videos on TH-cam about long exposes and photo stacking in lightroom but no one shows the settings to activated on the camera. i am using a canon 80d.
Hey Francois. It is impossible to take a long exposure photo during the daylight without a ND filter and IMHO stacking photos to get a similar effect just looks bad. Hoya makes really good ND filters that are not to expensive. The Hoya NDX400 HMC is what I have been using. Its a 9-stop ND filter. But even with it. Its best to wait until the afternoon to get the best results.
Very interesting. I guess one could do that in the camera. Honestly I only ever used that for getting those creative shots with someone in one photo and then flowers or trees brought across their face. I may have to try this and see how well it works for me.
HELLLPPPP PLEASE...Canon 80D. When I press my AF button only one-shot and servo the only two options came up on the display screen....why is that so? And when i hit the little button at the front close to the shutter button, it says this function is not available during live view shooting... i just bought this camera from ebay. so you think its fake or am not doing something right?
Sounds like someone has remapped the CFn options in the camera. You can assign many of the camera buttons to do different task then what they was assigned to by default. Go to Cfn III, tab 4 and you can customize and change them to work the way you want them to. Hope this helps.
I don't know how you're getting to the AF menu. It'd be nice if you showed that as I can't bring it up on my 80D at all, and for the life of me can't figure out how to select a single point to grab focus on. When I select the AF point button on top, it turns the displayed menu off.
The little button just above your shutter button. Thats how you access the focus zone menu. Then you can move the focus points around using the directional pad. Hope this helps..
Same here. When I press the AF button my camera tells me the function is not allowed in Live View. How do you get the focus points to Live View for adjustments?
This puzzled me too, but here's how to get the AF point display on the LCD. First, you need to be in viewfinder mode, not Live View. Then you need to press the INFO button, which shows one of the items you've set in the "INFO button display options," which are located in the menu, wrench panel, tab 3. As soon as this INFO display appears, you can press the AF point selection button located at the top right of the back of the camera (it's also the magnify button). This will bring up the AF point display that is also showing in the viewfinder.
I am little confuse about so many auto focus settings in 80D. I usually take birds picture in flight, can you please guide about the best possible settings for birds in flight....Regards
Hello, I normally try to use the Zone AF selection and use 9 center AF points. But I only occasionally do any wildlife photography maybe once or twice a year. So I am far from being a source of knowledge on the best method for wildlife. But I hope this helps.
Yes the feature is in the camera were you can set it to focus one time before the video starts to record and then you can just leave it. Thats what I do with my older 600D (T3i) that I film my videos with.
Wow, I was trying to change it forever, and it kept saying it could not change the focus point in live shooting mode. Finally I tried with the viewfinder mode, but it still took a while to find out which control button would move it across to the center grouping. Sheesh, I don't know how you got your screen to show the points, they are only in my viewfinder!
When I press the Q button my screen looks nothing like that. I get an AF "method" option but no "Operation" option. Method only gives options for continuous/area/ point, not One Shot/AI Focus/AI Servo. I want to set up One Shot in movie mode so I can have complete control over focus. What am I missing? Thanks!
the only way i can select the focus points its using the view finder, if i click the button while using the view mode, it says you cant do it while view mode is on, any idea why?
Hey Issac, what view mode are your referring to? If you are talking about Live View mode, then no you can not becuase it uses a different focusing system all together. Hope this helps.
Still having multiple AF problems. I know how to "Set" the Modes & Areas (and lens AF). But when I go to shoot-- I am not seeing any focusing cues. ex a red flashing square or a beep. Can you help us to "Use" the AF modes as opposed to just how to "Set" them?
These settings are confusing. The focus area clusters don't show up in Live View. But they can be displayed on the LCD, and once displayed, they can be selected by touch. Seeing this display on the LCD might make you think you're in Live View, but actually the display is available only during viewfinder shooting. What you see in Live View is another story: different types and numbers of focus frames depending on the AF method used (single, multi, tracking). Also, you can move the AF frame over a larger area of the screen than you can in VF shooting. Of course, most of these functions are available only when autofocus is on. The exception (which I don't understand) is that when using the viewfinder in manual focus mode, you can still display and modify the AF cluster in the VF and also on the LCD - but you can't use those AF points to focus unless you switch back to autofocus mode. I hope this helps!
You can have both visual and audible focus confirmations. To activate the focus beep, turn on the beep function (red menu, panel 1). In the viewfinder there are 2 visual confirmations. One is a dot that appears at the right end of the info. display. In addition, you can set the camera to flash the AF frame in red when focus is achieved. You need to turn on "VF display illumination" (orange menu, autofocus submenu, panel 15). Then you need to choose among the display options in the same submenu, panel 14. For Live View shooting, the focus frame (or frames) will turn green when focus is achieved.
Joe Jackson sir I wana ask one more thing from you when I see from my view finder I see some kind of pattern noise, is that normal and I just unboxed my 80D it’s brand new is that a normal thing ? It’s not dirt I am sure it’s some kind of pattern of tiny micro tiny blocks
Im quite anoyed these new camera's make it impossible to change focus points while looking trough the viewfinder. My 10 year old canon 450D is capable of doing that and i used it for a decade only to find out i can no longer use a feature i used all the time. Its a hassle to have to look for your subject again and hope its still there while you screw arround with focus points. Specialy in macro its a pain as insects tend to not like huge lenses up close so they take off. big screwup if you ask me.
On the 80D, you CAN change focus points while looking through the viewfinder. But first you need to press the AF point selection button located at the top right of the rear of the camera (it's also the magnify button). That activates the grid, and you can use the "multi-controller" to move the AF point around - up, down, or diagonal. There is also a setting to control whether the movement of the AF point stops at the edges or continues on the opposite side.
While I found your video somewhat helpful (I gave you a thumbs-up), I was looking for a little more detail/information. For instance, when you went to live view, I would have liked to know how you got to live view because you moved your hands too fast and the buttons were obscured by your hand. This seemed to happen throughout the video. Thank you for your help all the same.
Seemed that the 80D would not have single point auto-focus so did a search and found it does. Shows at about 1:20 in the video below just in case it helps anyone. th-cam.com/video/XU7ZWpabYU0/w-d-xo.html

What should I select for group pictures to have everyone in focus? Does this work in auto mode or do I have to switch to manual mode?
I would just stick the camera into Av (aperture priority mode) and choose an aperture of f/8 and see if they gets enough of everyone into focus. Hope this helps.

Check they have not been disabled. Orange menu...C.fn II: Autofocus, Option 8 'Select AF Area Select Mode'. Tick them all.
can you turn off autofocus and still you point to focus to lock subjects in that focus
No, however you can turn off Servo AF off on the back screen which will do the same thing as your wanting.
Wow, I was trying to change it forever, and it kept saying it could not change the focus point in live shooting mode. @@JoeJacksonJr I'm only ever in "M". I'll delve deeper into this over the holidays. Thanks anyway.

See my reply to Throughaclearlens Life above.
What am I doing wrong ?
I set the Manual AF Mode but the clusters do not show up on my live view shooting mode.
They will not show up with you lens set to Manual AF. Its just the way Canon has the camera setup.. Hope this helps.
See my reply to Throughaclearlens Life.
Hlo sir,, how to bloyer 18-135 lens (canon 80D)
Did you get any solution? I also have 18-135 lens. I think I will have to buy 55m
M'kay? hahaha :D thanks nice video homey ;)
LOL, thanks :-)
When I press that af button nothing happens plz tell us in what mode we should put the camera first to change these settings
Make sure your in one of the manual models like Av, Tv or M.. Hope this helps.

Nope
I'm shooting mostly motorcross and flat track. It be nice to have a wider focus. the 45 auto moves everywhere but where it should be
Went into C.FnII:Autofocus/screen 8/ Select AF area sele.mode and had to enable them. Life is good
How come I click the same button as him and the menu is completely different from that one and I have an 80d
You need to set your camera to Av, Tv or M mode. Hope this helps.
Thank you. Very helpful 😁
Cool
I have a issue with focus, I need to get full screen focus for taking photographs
Up aperture to 10-15 or even higher
Im quite anoyed these new camera's make it impossible to change focus points while looking trough the viewfinder. My 10 year old canon 450D is capable of doing that and i used it for a decade only to find out i can no longer use a feature i used all the time.
Cool missed that (must be because its a dual function button). i use it all the time for macro so i was reluctant to buy this body.
My focus point doesn't move through the viewfinder
While I found your video somewhat helpful (I gave you a thumbs-up), I was looking for a little more detail/information. For instance, when you went to live view, I would have liked to know how you got to live view because you moved your hands too fast and the buttons were obscured by your hand. This seemed to happen throughout the video. Thank you for your help all the same.
more examples please
Had to read all the comments to actually find the 45 display.
This would be a good video if you would have shown the buttons on the top that you need to push ….
Seemed that the 80D would not have single point auto-focus so did a search and found it does. Shows at about 1:20 in the video below just in case it helps anyone.
