I've played this game for about 100 hours, and here are the things that stand out to me personally. 1 - The story is actually really good but can take a lot of time due to cutscenes 2 - the class system is one of my favourites but can take a lot of grinding due to the fact that you have to master every skill, while MJ materials are rare 3 - the combat is fine for some weapons, like swords and halberds, the magic is also quite nice but hammers and great swords are stiff with long animations you can't cancel. the gun is ok i guess but nothing special 4 - the areas have some visual interest but the dungeon style layouts get very tedious after the first few hours 5 - there's a lot of good bosses in this game but due to the core mechanics of combat, certain bosses can feel very unfair at times. some bosses also break their own rules, particularly the successor of the ribcage who hints at you to hide behind the pillars, but then you just get hit anyway 6 - the DLC.. what the hell happened there. 30 bucks for less than an hour's worth of content 7 - the multiplayer is really bad, you can join someone's world and help them out but that's it. there's no PvP, you can't trade items or drop them. but the most insulting part is the poor scaling. i helped a friend out on his first playthrough and i ended up dealing 10s of thousands of damage in seconds while he did a few hundred per swing. 8 - too many weapons are just weaker or reskinned versions of each other. there appears to be a lot of weapons to choose from, but then you realize that 70% of them are just fillers to bridge the gap between a weak and a strong version What brings me back to this game every now and then is the bosses, I've played all the souls games and it's dlc, bloodborne, sekiro, elden ring. the boss fights have a very similar style that i like, even if they are generally a bit worse
It was like £4 on steam so i'm playing it quite a bit rn. Feels like final fantasy and a soul game mixed. It's not insanely mechanical but can be alot of fun. Good story aswell so far.
As someone with 206 hours in this game and counting, i absolutely adore it. It is one of, if not my favorite game ever made. It is a genuine masterpiece in my eyes, with the only downside being the butterfly boss (i don't like it). Everything else in this game checks all of the boxes for me. I would genuinely give a kidney for a code vein anime or sequel (please Bandai Namco, I'll do anything)
Decided to give this a try as my first ever Soulslike since I got it for free on PS5, managed to beat it yesterday (as of the time of this post). Honestly was worried given how hesitant I was in trying this particular style of game, but overall I found it a pretty decent and enjoyable experience. Only real jank I experienced with the combat is how finicky and unhelpful the back attacks were, and once my Gifts started falling into place I was having a lot of fun carving through the Lost. Yes, the Cathedral of Blood is INCREDIBLY confusing (if we're gonna be mild here), and I am somewhat dreading going through it again in NG+, but from what I've heard you do retain your map clearance. You will need to activate the "bonfire" Mistles again, but having the maps filled out already would hopefully make navigation a little bit easier than before, especially if you don't have to go out of your way to find the Rotten Mistles again
I did the same thing you did I was hesitant too. I wasn't sure I would take to the art style, but the combat was fun and interesting. I'm more accustomed to the DS series style of combat though. I keep wiffing attacks in this game though, because enemies have so much mobility and a lot of weapons don't close distance well without special attacks. The Cathedral of Blood and the Fire City were a nightmare for me to get through.
I started this a few days ago and personally I love it so far. The character designs, the story, the customization possibilities, I have to say over all so far I love it. The combat is a little crappy but I do enjoy trying to get stronger.
@1:13 It's no surprise this game is like God Eater considering they are both part of the same universe. God Eater is an okay anime too. God Eater takes place outside the mist, while Code Vein takes place inside it. (I'm referring to God Eater, the anime btw.)
I saw in another comment that God Eater and Code Vein were in the same universe. I genuinely didn't know that. That would have made my playthrough so much more interesting knowing that. Might have to go watch the anime again.
@@valmayorbruhwe don’t actually know if they’re in the same universe* however it’s most likely that Code Vein is a prequel to the god eater games as the BoR parasite is similar to the Aragami core; alternatively Code Vein and God Eater are alternate realities with overlapping features
Just beat the game after watching this video so I'd like to give my hot take on a few things. The cathedral of the blood was not bad in my experience. There are MANY worse areas in other souls or soulslike games that legit make me turn the game off, and this place didnt. I never had to look up a guide on how to find things or where to go. I attribute part of that to luck, for sure, but I also don't believe it's that hard to figure out. The maps in general are alright but I would agree they definitely aren't a strength of the game. The story was great and the characters were good. But what kept me wanting to keep coming back was actually the gameplay. It's 100% stiff, no arguments there. It's not nearly as fluid as other soulslike games and I have had my fair share of complaints while playing. However, with the many blood codes and their various gifts, and the decent about of weapons and blood veils, it helped to keep things fresh and entertaining. I'll admit part of it was also a constant companion that definitely made the game easier, but I think that helped the game in this case rather than hurt it. The orn and smough-type fight was challenging and sometimes required some wicked RNG to be on your side. If your companion died right away the fight is probably done. But, and I think my countless hours on DS3 and BB helped here, if you keep at it you'll figure out what you gotta do and eventually you may realize the fight isn't as hard as you may have thought. Speaking of the companion though, they are very useful throughout the whole game as a means of reviving you and taking aggro, however in terms of the damage by endgame they are near useless. Idk if one companion is better than any others, but they all seemed pretty pathetic by the end in terms of damage(again still great because they revive you a few times) and they CANNOT last on their own for more than 5 seconds. Actually laughable. Overall, and this is where a real hot take comes, I really liked the game and it would rank high on my list of souls/like games I've played. Because I don't want to get roasted ill keep the order to myself but just know it's up near the top instead of the bottom. And I'm not even a real big anime guy. Edit: I forgot to add that while I like the story and characters, the dialogue and storytelling can be literally cringe incarnate and SOOO anime-esque, like on the fucking nose. It didn't actually bother me, but it's definitely noticeable.
One thing i absolutely love about this game is you can change your build seamlessly without a respect system that so many other souls games do it makes it so fun because you can at any point just go from big swords to magic caster.
Also I love how in this it's more story focused as well instead of just having to read through text to get a grasp on story like dark souls although I Love dark souls as well it's just easier with cutscenes and honestly the the way the story is it pushed me to want to see more and help me overcome the bosses because I wanted to see what would happen next.
I’m not really a soulslike fan but I love most Bandai Namco games so I jumped in and am very much enjoying myself. I’m In the “memories of player” map rn. I think the art style/less dark themes of the game is what’s keeping me interested where souls games fail for me. My biggest complaint is the LOAD TIMES! My god, I never realized how impatient I was
@@Totorellini I admit I didn't give the character creation the justice it deserved. I'm just not the type of person to really dwell on how my character looks is all, but thanks for pointing it out!
@@Totorellini The character creation offers one changing everything at any time (even gender) which is good in the case one was not satisfied later with it.
Good point I failed to mention in my comment. I'm on PS5 so the load times shouldn't take long but my god I guess it doesn't matter because that shit takes ages
Something that is being overlooked is that Code Vein and the God Eater series are related to one another. From what ive gathered is that Code Vein is supposed to be the event that lead to the God Eater franchise. Idk how any of CV itself corresponds to God Eater cause NOTHING in its storyline points towards God Eater but the director has confirmed that CV and God Eater are in the same world.
they dont happen in the same universe! Think of it like parallel universes where in one, the code vein storyline happened and the other the god eater storyline happened. The devs confirmed that any similarities to god eater in game design in code vein, (for example that horror that looks like a Dyaus Pita, in that one cutscene), are either merely easter eggs, part of cosmetic DLC content or just a nod to god eater and not canon confirmation that both games happen in the same continuity.
@@kianhr104 those are all DLC bosses and the god eater references are just Easter eggs. Visually they are the same as aragami, but in-universe they aren't connected. It's basically reusing the same assets
@ No where has it been officially stated they are not connected all we have been given that Code vein name before Launch was God Eater 0 there are multiple Aramgami like beings which act the same way (not actually reused assets BTW, so that kinda throws your whole argument out the window). Nothing in the lore for both franchises clash as a matter of fact the code vein lore supports God Eater 1 lore very much. It also the common consensus across the entire community, nay across both entire communities. Also idk the fact that there is a NPC who basically confirms the beast of the outside are Aragami
Thanks for that man. I really appreciate this comment! I've got quite a few more vids in the making, and I hope you enjoy them as much as you did this one.
I feel insane because I liked the cathedral even on my first playthrough and still look forward to navigating it again on my tenth playthrough. Its one of the best areas in the game, I'll take it a million times over garbage areas like the ashen caverns or the dlc. Navigation is a fun and fair challenge with the minimap, honestly the level design is really good in my opinion but the actual aesthetics are COMPLETELY missing for many of them, especially the underground areas. If it has the exact same level mechanically, but was as beautiful as a DS3 level, the level design would be adored.
a lot of people dont know this but the focus bar also allows you to do a knock up attack that automatically gives you a drain attack and i agree with your verdict which is why i really wanna see a code vein 2 its potential is still massive imo especially with how the story leads it to with the best ending(spoilers ahead) . > > > > > with the gang going to the outside world theres so much they could do and with the concept of vampires cloth weapons and a much more action focus gameplay they could make something incredible but ehhh i dont have enough copium for 2 souls games (CV2 AND BB)
I actually see other people do that in their gameplay, but I never really figured out how to do it. I agree that Code Vein has great potential to tap into with the sequels. I'm looking forward to it, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
@valmayorbruh similar to special weapon skill it's r1+triangle for the knockup attack and r1+square for the special weapon attack I dunno the controls for pc or Xbox but it's just the running button plus heavy or light attack for those
Blood Beans? Just got Deluxe Ed for $11.99 I'm not necessarily a big Souls like or Anime fan, but I liked the animation in the trailer and the story sounds really cool. As long as there is an openish world to explore, cool character creator and lots of customizable stuff... It should at least satisfy my A.D.D. for a bit.
Invasions are never more than 3 enemies attacking at a time, when 1 dies another takes its place until it finishes with a tough enemy, so its not overwhelming unless the music is making you panic. This is where backstabbing, parrying and perfect dodge to build focus comes into play which allows you to launch your enemies into the air and drain them. Invasions are useful to farm gifts for your companions which gives you some benefits. There are also other things you skipped or didn't even understand. You didn't just like the game enough to give it a fair shake and that is okay. Also the combat is not janky, that is just you.
I remember playing rather a beta or demo version of it a few years ago and i didn't like it due to the sluggish combat and hard gameplay but after playing the souls games i decided to give it a try again around 2 weeks ago. I've spent 35+ hours in the game and its actually really fun. Gameplay wise its really good except for 2 things for me which is the camera can sometimes not show your character when you're backed to a corner and gets very wonky. Another is that if you kill an enemy and you lock on to the next, your character can still be stuck in the attack animation making your character swing at air or barley miss the next target but this might just be more of a problem with bigger weapons like the Greatswords that i like to use. Story wise its very typical anime with a few cool concepts and twists. I like the idea of getting a different enedings depending on rather or not you saved the bosses memories by exploring their area fully before killinh the boss but since its an aspect the game doesn’t really tell you it can be frustrating. Along with that is just a small nit pick but it is annoying that its impossible to get every blood code in 1 playthrough. Not a deal breaker or anything but still a bit annoying. I like the optional content too aka the depths, they feel similar to chalice dungeons in Bloodborne but shorter and more straight forward. Honesty, i like it that way and i actually wish there were more than 12. The tower of trials are the hardest challenges the game has to offer. I haven't been able to personally beat them yet except for the first tower 😅 (there are 3 towers in total and each with 6 floors) but they're a nice challenge before you go into NG+ or if you want a harder experience than the main game. Overall i like the game and would give it a flat 8/10. The story is good but the vestiges are kinda tedious after awhile but luckily you can skip them if you want (nit pick but i also wish some of them had different music to make them more unique especially the successors). The combat other than some hiccups with greatswords and hammers is pretty fun especially with the blood codes which are a great class system IMO. The enemy variety is nothing crazy but never boring the whole way through since each area has at least 1 or 2 unique enemy types other than your regular lost. The companies do make the game easiser but they're still not able to solo a boss or anything like I've seen other people say. The bosses themselves seem more like glass cannons than tanks. Many bosses die very quick but can also kill you in less than 3 hits or even one shot you. Boss battles in this game usually last around 2 minutes or less unless they have a cutscene transition into a second phase like the successor of the ribcage or fighting the virgin born after the wolf king. Overall i like the code vein bosses but they're not some end all be all bosses. Overall i dont even know which boss i would ever consider my favorite since they're all around the same level for me in difficulty (most bosses i killed within 3 tries with only exceptions being butterfly, blade & canon, and the second queen's knight. No boss in this game has taken me over 10 tries though) but i do say that even though its a but if a weird choice i like the successor of the breath boss fight even if it is a very simple fight.
I played DS 1-3 and bloodborne, my unpopular opinion is that Code Vein is better overral than DS series. CV has it all, challenge, good story and fancy graphics.
If you can see yourself finishing this game then go for the deluxe. I assume the deluxe version has the DLC? I haven't tried the DLC yet and I don't think I will, but based on what I've heard, there are a few good boss fights in there.
I’ve played every souls game, including some of the “B” versions, and this game did not disappoint. It wasn’t as hard as a souls game, thought it still had its moments, and if you didn’t grind areas early to get a level advantage, it definitely got hard. As far as the maps go, elden ring was the first souls game with a true open world, while the rest had certain areas that were open, the story line was very linear. Yea this game also has a linear story line, however it also does a 100x better at connecting you with characters, including your own than any of the souls games did, all while letting you change your “build” on the go. There were true connections built in this game between the player and the companions and the story telling was amazing. This is still one of my favorite games to date, the graphics are phenomenal especially when compared to any souls games, and the feel is superb. This game goes on sale every so often with like 80% off even for the deluxe edition, I would highly recommend. No game is perfect, but for the 8 or 9 play throughs I have in this game, I do truly love it.
I know the hate for certain areas, in my case I hate the swamp. I played a lot of coop and mostly was on helping players finish the Cathedral maze (at that time I had the route memorized) and beat the Double Boss (you know who I mean). Curiously this is my second souls like game after Bloodborne and I did enjoy the game an its vestige system allowing me to change my gameplay style and not being force to have multiple accounts if Iv wanted an specific build. Also, great review overall.
The class system is a huge plus now that I think about it, comparing it to souls games. In souls games, once you invest in a stat, you kinda locked into that build until NG+. In Code Vein, you can just switch on the fly. Appreciate the support!
After playing the game 3 times already, I found that the 2 bosses aren't that hard. But the Cathedral of Sacred blood map is pure evil. The swamp map is annoying but it's not too bad. And this is actually my first souls like game.
@@saiseisenzurashi10 The duo boss are pure elemental damage, with the right setup and codes one can buff ones resistance to have 100% resistance to those elements.
Love it actually. I do agree with the maps but everything else is amazing. My only thing is wish this was more of an actual open world map similar to Elden ring, even Genshin impact or something. They have been a pretty good developer as far as listening to their fan base so I’m thinking maybe they will come back for a code vein 2 and make it a little more Elden Ring open world.
Honestly, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes the Cathedral of Blood is terrible, but I eventually memorized the path, so it wasn't too terrible afterwards, yes the double boss fight was annoying (until I found a way to take 0 damage) and the next boss fight was out of the blue. I respect your review, this game may not be for everyone, but as you said, those who watch anime, will feel at home here. The weapons, blood veils, blood codes, and the many buffs and spells that come with them, really help change the pace. Again, everyone is entitled to their opinion, so if anyone wants to argue, you will be ignored. Admittedly, I too, deleted the game, because I wasn't used to it. But I eventually conquered it, and I put more time on this game, but also Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3. Regardless, I'm having a good time, even if I do struggle slightly less, oh and if anyone wants to know the cheese method for those two, have a blood veil that has decent fire and ice protection, equip flame protection and ice armor gifts, and elemental wall, and pop the fire tonic and ice tonic consumables, and if you want to be safe, Cleansing Light, oh and Gift Extension. As for mido, inhibit consumables, inhibit resist passive, blood veil with high inhibit defense and blood defense, and infuse it with inhibit, blood tonic, and blood guard. The QueenSlayer blood code tears his ass up. If you set it up properly. Other than that, have a wonderful day everyone, and stay safe, enjoy whatever game brings you happiness.
Thanks for the huge tips for the double boss fight and Mido! Hope it helps someone who reads this comment. Appreciate you sharing your take on it too. Have a nice day!
Bought this in 2024 and Im glad I did. Im a terrible Souls player, and have never experienced 'anime' games, so it was novel/interesting for me. The ability to scale the difficulty almost on the fly (quick build changes, companions) was the most enjoyable aspect of gameplay. I didnt mind the Cathedral on my 2nd run - and I like the aesthetics of it, but yes, it could have had a handful of more interesting elements to change it up. Good review! Although I disagree with most of it (eg I spent ages on customisation, I liked Cathedral, narrow maps built good tension, companion system was awesome, I would recommend).
Code veins replayability is only good for what it gives you, the 3 endings are based on if you saved the “important bosses” or not, and not saving them gives you some strong classes but gives you the “worst ending”
Great take on game i totally agree with you on the invasion system it was just Bs i would always pick up item and warp away with that spell or item to not have to deal with it.that early invasion in first depths map was a good one for farming those old world thingy's to buy gifts for your buddies. Its free game atm on psn so i replayed it.
even though i did quit at the cathedral, i found myself coming back for apparent reason..... now am i master maze runner because i can clear cathedral in less than 10 minutes. sad to say that thats what you literally have to be to enjoy that map.
Just for the record, it doesn't just take inspiration from God Eater. It's literally in the same world as God Eater, a fact I only recently learned, lol Ok so now that I've finished the video, your stats aren't "automatically assigned on level up. Your hp and stamina go up with level. The stats are assigned by your chosen blood code. Your blood veil and weapon scale off the stats from your blood code. I think I disagree about being able to recommend the game simply because I found the gameplay enjoyable. A little clunky, sure, but far from the worst I've encountered. There's lots of side content to engage with and tons of hidden items and other goodies that make the game more enjoyable
If you found the game enjoyable enough to recommend to others, by all means do so. I'm just saying I can't cuz I don't want to recommend something I didn't enjoy. With the levelling part, I wanted to highlight the fact that there are no stats to specifically choose when levelling. My bad, I probably should have worded it better. I'll keep that in mind when making my next scripts. Thanks for these insights!
If you compare this to all other soulslike games, this one along with nioh and the surge are at the top in my opinion. Even generally speaking, this game is much better than what it was first judged to be just because it’s anime style.
Just playing it now - agree with everything you said tbh. One other thing, I found it all a bit too easy for the most part especially the bosses... until the last boss which is a massive pain. There doesn't seem to be much progression in the difficulty at all until then. I was also a bit annoyed that there are like only four different mobs - it was free on Playstation Plus, if it wasn't I would not be happy
I just dl and played this game few days ago and I have to say, this game is really underrated, because everyone compared it with souls game. If u play this game as a view of ACG action RPG, it was very great.
My verdict is always on code vein, "Code vein is way better than dark souls 2 and dark souls 2 SotFS" because from DS2, you are lucky you have buddy who can save you from dying during too much grouped enemies unlike DS2.
I absolutely ageee on the mediocre to bad map design especially until and including the cathedral of the "we have anor londo at home". Would have loved for you to go deeper on the combat issue because i felt it was pretty fast, dynamic and for the most parts very fluid - even more so once you had accumulated enough blood codes and skills to play around and experimet with. Invasions and situations with lots of enemies and the resulting perma stunlock being the most notable exception in my mind.
I agree that I may not have gone as in-depth in the combat as others wanted me to. There was a comment that there was a "launch counter" thing that allows for an instant visceral attack, but I never mentioned it. Knowing all these mechanics could have made the review a bit better. In my defense though, I was able to finish the game without needing to go too in-depth with the combat which probably was the reason why I didn't need to touch on it more, if that makes sense.
Ok so I started the game a week ago, first I completely agree about your comments on fake Anor londo that I almost quit the game because I spent so much on that map just running trying to figure out where the hell should I go, I'm quit relived that it's the only one of its kind, second the game difficulty oh man I felt it was trying too hard to "hard" it just felt awful the thing about Fromsofts games is that everytime you die you always know what you did wrong and therefore try to learn from it and it always felt that the difficulty in these games was natural more than it was trying to prove its hard which is the complete opposite of this game, the game is trying way too hard to be hard and difficult everytime I die I get frustrated because it's simply unfair enemies movement is so weird you really can't tell what the heck are they doing, combos happen almost instantly so if you get hit once then you'll get hit the entirety of the combo, the game wants you to be aggressive yet it doesn't give you anything to encourage you like bloodborne with healing, healing is extremely rare and the upgrades to healing are not enough compared to how much damage you receive especially unfair damage, the only way to play the game is to get so op that you one shot everyone even bosses, the clausterophobic corridors which make the entirety of the game allow no room for dodging or even getting hit because everytime you get hit or dodge there's a big chance you'll fall off the edge and die, the stamina par I swear this mechanic is only here because Dark souls has a stamina par the game would've been 10 times better without this stupid mechanic and it's ridiculous because no matter how much stamina you have attacks seem to consume a percentage instead of a fixed number so you never feel comfortable with stamina no matter what level you are. So in conclusion the game is terrible yet I still love it and wish it has a sequal and I hope that it gets it's own identity instead of trying so fucking hard to be anime dark souls, the game has so many good ideas and a good story if implemented well it would have been a great game, but by try so hard to be "difficult" dark souls like game it shot itself in the foot. Love the game but hate it's stolen identity.
I love this game, I don't play many souls like so this was my most invested one. I actually played it years ago got all the way to the double boss fight (you know), and then beat them after over 50 or so attempts But for some reason my dumbass deleted it out of content. But after I downloaded it again I restarted, and enjoyed it even more. I'm on my second playthrough with the intention of beating it again, but this time I'm going with a dark mage build, it's so much more different and easier in some areas. As well as due to my knowledge of everything it's easier to go through smoothly. Except invasions, screw those 😭
@@valmayorbruh i bought the deluxe edition (trust me when i ssay i forgot the name of the dlc) so im getting the full experience xd, it was at a great discount on steam 2 weeks ago
Got it for free during March PlayStation Plus, been playing the last 2 days and ok so far, but a bit alarming about the level design and the stiff combat, but I wonder if it gets better with endgame abilities and such? Story is good so a plus there definitely
Man why do people still complain about the cathedral map. How do you get lost in a map that has linear hallways with a breadcrumb map plotting your journey. It can get a little tricky right at the end where you're in the towers and the verticality makes the maps less effective but still. I never had an issue with it, once you know there are paths you drop down just look down at every gap in the railings.
I laugh at the over the top edginess and boobs but it plays fun and that's what matters. Glad I got it before it left playstation essentials. I'd probably play a sequel as long as it doesn't go to heavy into God Eater territory I actually really really like the cathedral. I did not look up a guide. Its so weird and tough I love the weirdness. And yes it did take me forever but I enjoyed the tension. Thankfully playing on PS5 lagging was not an issue.
just bought the game last december coz it was on sale, and as shameful as it is, this is my first rodeo to souls game (specifically my souls game that i really sat through and endured). It was fun so far and the bloodcode mish mash was the best parts, story was good as well, not the best one but nonetheless it was full of emotions. Also i loved dancing with Hellfire knight. that boss was just a balance of sudden explosion, quick movement and tankiness. I just loved his difficulty once i got the gist of his movements.
no shame in that man. we all get introduced to this genre through different games, and as long as you don't bring yourself to utterly hate them, that's a win in my books! Glad you liked the game! There's a whole world of Souls-likes for you to explore, and I hope each one gives you a better experience than the last.
@@valmayorbruh ngl i almost quit on Code vein coz Invading Executioner is just pure brutal for early level, and then Blader and Cannoneer was no joke, they just combo whenever they can once player is staggered, like bruh, chill.
I got this game on ps5 two weeks ago and finally got the platinum today. My hardest area was the cathedral of the sacred blood where I died the most cuz of the bs invasion, but on my 3rd ng+ it was easy once get stronger and u memorized the path. It not bad but could be improve even more if you are expecting top tier souls game then no , the weapons in this game atleast all of them have a place , the DLC might as well be pointless out side of the boss fight also new game + add nothing but changes the enemy stats which make me sad because the dark souls series do add some of new item in new game + even tho i take 55 hour to finish the first run The game difficult not to hard if willing to read the eneny animation I do know alot of people hate the story of the game i do agree to some point but not to the point where people say it a instant 1/10 atleast a 5 or 6 for me because i dont care about story much The game do have mod support for pc The friendly ai it kind of useless the moment you reach new game + or the base difficult at late game but then again i only use them for traveling around the map for boss fight i never used them unless i already beat the boss once
I kinda disagree with your final verdict in your video. Code Vein IS WORTH playing and has enough replayability to always come back after a few months or a few years. While you did give good valid criticism, I think what you mean to say is "It's not for me". I know there's still plenty of people who still play Code Vein. And it has about 500-700 people still playing today. Code Vein is like a flavor of food or drink. It may not be for everyone but that doesn't make it any less good if you don't like it or it's not your thing. I personally love Code Vein. Code Vein and Nioh are some of the best Souls-like games with anime aesthetics.
The reviews I make on my channel are coming from my personal point of view only, so you could say that these are just my opinions. I have no problems with people disagreeing with my takes, because I can also see how people may like the things I dislike. I think that can be said for all games. Even Elden Ring, which is beloved by most, has people saying that it's trash and isn't worth playing. I appreciate the comment though. It's great that you're enjoying Code Vein, but just like you said, it's not for me.
the level design and "invasions" are why I'm glad I only ever gamepass'd or PS+'d this. They somehow make DkSII levels feel like real places and the invasions disrespect player observation by letting you correctly observe the number of enemies before deciding you're suddenly wrong Wo Long Fallen Dynasty is great and at least lets you make your character anime af. Unfortunately we're still waiting for a good Soulslike with anime aesthetic all around
I guess I replay it again. I bought a key for the season pass for 5 bucks. The dlc are mediocre at best but it´s cool to have more levels of the depths.
Guys maybe can help me i have code vein game , but can t play . I try a lot way from youtube nothing didn't work . Game working with Asus Rog but with MSI laptop didn't work , same windows how Asus Rog be all programs instal what need .Others new and old games work , only this didn't work.
is code vein fun your first time around if you buy the game on sale? Yes Is it a game with diverse and interesting builds that will make you want to play through it again to try out the other weapons? No. Code vein has about 5 main weapon styles give or take, and it gives you access to all of them fairly early. Immediately you the player will find out which you like and which you hate. Now some in some games, weapon styles change hugely once you enter mid or late game which can bring up discussion if you should give them another chance. In code vein this is not the case. Code vein is really weird for it tries to be like dark souls but with a special ability system. Yet none of the special abilities you have access to feel cool or exciting. If you wanted dark souls but with abilites, the abilities should feel good to use and look exciting to use. Most the game you will barely even use your abilities as they aren't even a needed feature. A game that does this much better is Nioh 2, where it's skill tree allows you to be pretty fucking cool by the mid/end game. This does not happy in code vein. Honestly you could remove the blood code system entirely and most casual players would barely even notice, hell I bet half of all die hard players would barely even notice. Fun game to play once, beat it, never look at it again untill like four years later where your bored and just feel like doing it again.
I agree in some points here! I recently picked the game up for free and got the DLC on sale.. It's funny though at the end of the video you mention the story and the anime aspect of the game nearly saved it.. Those are the points I gafe 0% for LOL! Personally I like the fact you can flip your build on the spot and the fighting style of the game what got me invested. I'm also a completionist at heart, and man this game has a lot for you to find/unlock/and grind for.. even though I got tired of the grinding sometimes (and im not even done yet), it keeps me being invested for some reason.. I can't really explain it.. maybe it's my own stubbornness.. nearly done mastering all the skills/gifts for all the bloodcodes/classes just killing bosses over and over in the dungeons, witch btw are the most fun for me tbf. and then I realized I said a lot without saying a lot lol lemme stop.
I feel like everyone is just scared to admit they like this it's not elden ring or dark souls 2 but it's a change of pace lower your blood pressure after those games kinda games
I get what you mean. Lots of people just outright trash a game if it doesn't meet their standards just cuz they compare it to one they're a huge fan of.
@@valmayorbruh I've owned it for a while beat elden ring to many times I wanted s refresher so I picked it up the only review I watched was yours I'm at the plant lady boss and am loving it. And it's still a challenging game to us casuals
Wanted to try this out but it's still 60$ on PC. Why is it still full price years after release? That's just the base game the deluxe is even more expensive. Guess I'm not going to be playing this one
Politely disagree on a few points. Most especially the character creation. The character creator alone is worth the 10 bucks this game is routinely on sale for. Just making cool characters is rewarding in a system that allows so much creativity The mask that hides your face you mentioned? Can be hidden in options. And you /do/ see your character's face plenty. Every drain attack, for one. More often for those of us that take advantage of the cutscene replayability feature. And I loved the Cathedral of the Sacred Blood? It was beautiful to look at, like a late-game Diablo stage. A lot of the fights were fun challenges. Buuuuut that's not to say all of them. Some were more frustrating, to your point about tight corridors. That and how easy it was to get lost I admit made it annoying at times. But on the whole I thought it was a pretty slice of the game, and a refreshing breath of air after all the dingy post-apocalypse vibes
I know the game has a loyal audience and my points are my opinion and that alone. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on the game! Always a good time talking about games. I didn't even know you could hide the masks in the options menu.
Few years ago I got the platinum. It’s a decent gam but probably the worst main souls like out there. Nothing is worse though than beating 400 bosses in online coop. Took me and a friend a whole weekend of grinding the mini dungeons over and over. I would never recommend people to 100% but I would at least say a first play through is worth it. Only to say you’ve played the game though XD
I don't remember the names of the veils anymore or where I got them. Sorry bud. I vaguely remember that the silver trench coat one and green jacket looking one were well into late game.
Yeah. I got it for Ps plus on my PS5 almost a week ago and I have almost 60 hours on it and played through it 3 times and I still have to do the story one last time. So please do not play the game again. You basically fight almost the same enemies over and over again aside from bosses, Cathedral of scared blood map is way too confusing, even after playing through the map 2 times, And some of the difficulty spikes are crazy. You could be fighting an easy boss but the next boss one shots you and is over-aggressive. I'm not gonna spoil it if you want to play it again but there is a part of the story where you have to fight 2 bosses then immediately after that you have to fight another boss, it's crazy. So unless you want to experience pain, play this game.
@@saiseisenzurashi10 A host of things, but to keep it short, Sony went to crap when they closed Sony Japan Studios. You don't even really have a PlayStation 5, it's pretty much a PlayStation 4, because all they've done so far is port PlayStation 4 games. People are leaving Sony in doves, and I was one of them.
I feel the same way about this game as you do,at first i loved this game for its storytelling, anime take and overall design but (and this is coming from someone who never played darksouls or bloodborne) the gameplay killed alot of the enjoyment i had, enemies having more combo prompts then you or being able to outright kill you although your highleveled, your partner characters being absolutely useless in fights half the time although i have read that yakumo and io are (in theory) the top preferred partners and literary half the times having to rely too heavily on dodging in fights which is a huge waste of your stamina, also i know you said that the cathedral of blood was a map people would quit the game over but me personally the city of fire was absolute horseshit, having a stupid fire damaging gimmick ontop of a already clustered and annoying game and i was ready to just give up playing although currently the crypt spire is gearing up to be my true ending point,no spoilers but the bosses are shit as in i hate them,as for my least hated map id say it's the desert ruins map although it is annoying losing your ichor points by traversing the sand and that one point going up an inclined plane had an enemy tossing sand balls at you id say that map is pretty tame,so overall i love this game but i flipping hate it
Some fair points but I think half your criticisms of the game are not exclusive to CV but all souls-like games. confusing/claustrophobic map design, repetitive enemy design and the difficulty of the game not actually being increased through design, just pure numbers (more enemies, more HP, More damage). This game was far from perfect but the companion system was there because the game was designed to be played in co-op. I thought the character builds were a lot more balanced than Elden ring as most people who played ER all went for the same OP weapons and builds. Not a sign of a good game when players feel forced to do that
You're absolutely right! The map design isn't exclusive to Code Vein. Most souls-likes suffer from this too (looking at you Lords of the Fallen and The Surge). I never thought of the game being made for co-op since I played it completely offline which is why I didn't include the online aspect in the review. While the game offers a lot of variety with builds due to allowing the mastery of skills to be used under any class, I think it also suffers from OP weapons (as do most games of this genre do), Zweihander for example. Honestly, games that have freedom with build-making will always have that "optimized" or "best" combination. I just felt that here, it was really evident due to most weapons I picked up being obsolete during my run.
It's definitely not a gimmick but a skill issue. I quit the forst time feeling it was too slow and clunky. I quit the 2nd time and quit at the anolondo looking area. Stuck there for a long time. Ot being able to find out where to go. Later started a new game and started liking the combat. Almost quit again in the same level. Got past it. Beat the game and love the combat and everyrhing now. The level design is fkin terrible though
I think the story is kinda mid gameplay is solid, and some of the mechanics in this game are great. Overall, I'd give it a B grade but that's in comparison to Formsoft games.
I was about to play it again, but I was hesitating. I watched your video and it reminded why I quit after only 8 hours in. Imo, I really think the game is bad. Performances issues fr, not only in transition corridors and my pc ain't that bad. Gameplay is okay, I think? I didn't spend enough time to have a real opinion. Graphics are cool, it's anime what can I say? Even if sometimes it feels a bit lazy, don't know if I'm clear, don't care. Level design is absolutely trash, this is the part I hate the most. The swamp absolutely disgusted me. Bestiary is okay, some ennemies are cool. Animations, I don't like it. And I think that's about it... REMINDER: it's just my opinion after 8 hours playing the game and it was a long time ago so I don't really remember every thing precisely. I know 8 hours isn't enough to make a real advice, but I remember I couldn't bear it anymore. I legit quit in the middle of a fight and just uninstalled it. I tried to give it a second chance but seing this video almost made me puke (the game not your video!)
Appreciate the honest response there man. This game is definitely rough around the edges and I can see aspects of the game that would make players quit the game. Thanks for sharing your take on this!
Mid af only worth it if you LOVE dark souls and anime. Even if you do it’s still mid tho but you’ll enjoy it. I love dark souls and I though this was meh 5/10 imo
Is it worted? I am playing it now, and i tell it. Yes it do! Its diferent like dark souls, cause her ehave a lot of movility and powers. And also have some problems. Side that, its realy gread! Has a story were you inbolve i a adventure whit other characters that also has theyre story, and everiting is happening in a souls world. Is realy good. But easy to get overleveled. So there may people to fell it so easy or borring for that
I've played this game for about 100 hours, and here are the things that stand out to me personally.
1 - The story is actually really good but can take a lot of time due to cutscenes
2 - the class system is one of my favourites but can take a lot of grinding due to the fact that you have to master every skill, while MJ materials are rare
3 - the combat is fine for some weapons, like swords and halberds, the magic is also quite nice but hammers and great swords are stiff with long animations you can't cancel. the gun is ok i guess but nothing special
4 - the areas have some visual interest but the dungeon style layouts get very tedious after the first few hours
5 - there's a lot of good bosses in this game but due to the core mechanics of combat, certain bosses can feel very unfair at times. some bosses also break their own rules, particularly the successor of the ribcage who hints at you to hide behind the pillars, but then you just get hit anyway
6 - the DLC.. what the hell happened there. 30 bucks for less than an hour's worth of content
7 - the multiplayer is really bad, you can join someone's world and help them out but that's it. there's no PvP, you can't trade items or drop them. but the most insulting part is the poor scaling. i helped a friend out on his first playthrough and i ended up dealing 10s of thousands of damage in seconds while he did a few hundred per swing.
8 - too many weapons are just weaker or reskinned versions of each other. there appears to be a lot of weapons to choose from, but then you realize that 70% of them are just fillers to bridge the gap between a weak and a strong version
What brings me back to this game every now and then is the bosses, I've played all the souls games and it's dlc, bloodborne, sekiro, elden ring. the boss fights have a very similar style that i like, even if they are generally a bit worse
That's a very nice quick review you whipped up there! Thanks for sharing your insights about the game!
It was like £4 on steam so i'm playing it quite a bit rn. Feels like final fantasy and a soul game mixed. It's not insanely mechanical but can be alot of fun. Good story aswell so far.
Story is without a doubt the best part for me.
They made a God Eater anime (albeit only 1 season) so a Code Vein anime is highly possible to happen.
That butterfly boss suck balls...

@@theoakty9242 i do like tales of arise!
I turned the animations off for the cutscene attacks
I am playing in 2024 and I say it worth it
I started this a few days ago and personally I love it so far.
For bad areas I am still hate the classic the most: Blight Town followed by The Valley of Defilement from Deamon Souls.
not a hot take, just correct opinions!
My god, I never realized how impatient I was
Also wanna point out… the character creation is fantastic and super fun to do even if you don’t get to see them much :)
I'm on PS5 so the load times shouldn't take long but my god I guess it doesn't matter because that shit takes ages
one of the better souls-like games for sure. The amount of playstyles and partners always keeps things fresh
@@MarcelScars you do know that Code veins name was God eater Zero right? And that there is multiple God eater bosses in code vein
@ also in the game files the 3 dlc bosses are called ancient Aragami…
I am playing it right now and I love it =)
Really wish they could make a second gam or possibly make more DLC for this (enemies, gifts and story DLC)
just brought this game on spring sale loving it
the foundation of the game is pretty strong.. the world and lore are very interesting.. i hope there will be a 2nd part
Wow. Honest review of an oldish game.. we need more creators like you.
Thanks for that man. I really appreciate this comment! I've got quite a few more vids in the making, and I hope you enjoy them as much as you did this one.
Cathedral was legit my favourite place. I love the aesthetics and the vibe of the place.
Takes heavy inspiration from games like dark souls and godeater. Who wants to tell them why it takes such inspiration from godeater
One of the best things I like about this game is when you boot it and then the opera music in the beginning is amazing
When the main menu screen makes you stop to listen to it, you know you're going to have a good time.
a lot of people dont know this but the focus bar also allows you to do a knock up attack that automatically gives you a drain attack
and i agree with your verdict which is why i really wanna see a code vein 2
its potential is still massive imo especially with how the story leads it to with the best ending(spoilers ahead)

with the gang going to the outside world theres so much they could do
and with the concept of vampires cloth weapons and a much more action focus gameplay they could make something incredible but ehhh i dont have enough copium for 2 souls games (CV2 AND BB)
I actually see other people do that in their gameplay, but I never really figured out how to do it. I agree that Code Vein has great potential to tap into with the sequels. I'm looking forward to it, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
@valmayorbruh similar to special weapon skill it's r1+triangle for the knockup attack and r1+square for the special weapon attack
I dunno the controls for pc or Xbox but it's just the running button plus heavy or light attack for those
@@reyeszenpai7265 I see. Thanks for that! I'll have to give it a try if I ever need to scratch an anime souls game itch in the future
Blood Beans?
Just got Deluxe Ed for $11.99
I'm not necessarily a big Souls like or Anime fan, but I liked the animation in the trailer and the story sounds really cool.
Soulsborne games are already anime, being mostly Berserk with a twist. Code Vein just takes more cues from Trinity Blood and Blood+ than Berserk.
I played DS 1-3 and bloodborne, my unpopular opinion is that Code Vein is better overral than DS series. CV has it all, challenge, good story and fancy graphics.
There’s a 85% discount on standard and 80% discount on deluxe version, which do you think I should go for ?
I'd definitely look forward to a Code Vein 2 to see how they improve from this. A more open map design would be very welcome for the sequel
Playing again recently and I still love this game. Also Incase someone didn’t know you have an option to hide your face mask and blood veil 🎉
Great video! Good to see you're still making 'em
just recently started making vids again. discovered newfound inspiration for it again!
Another awesome upload! A day that valmayorbruh uploads is a great day 🥳
And the days that Th4nny comments are even greater!
Great take on game i totally agree with you on the invasion system it was just Bs i would always pick up item and warp away with that spell or item to not have to deal with it.that early invasion in first depths map was a good one for farming those old world thingy's to buy gifts for your buddies. Its free game atm on psn so i replayed it.
woah I never tried warping out of an invasion to skip it. Wish I knew that sooner
even though i did quit at the cathedral, i found myself coming back for apparent reason.....
now am i master maze runner because i can clear cathedral in less than 10 minutes.
sad to say that thats what you literally have to be to enjoy that map.
played 5 hours today, enjoying it, gets better and more complex relatively quickly
Just for the record, it doesn't just take inspiration from God Eater. It's literally in the same world as God Eater, a fact I only recently learned, lol
Ok so now that I've finished the video, your stats aren't "automatically assigned on level up.
Even generally speaking, this game is much better than what it was first judged to be just because it’s anime style.
definitely one of the better souls-likes out there.
Just playing it now - agree with everything you said tbh. One other thing, I found it all a bit too easy for the most part especially the bosses... until the last boss which is a massive pain. There doesn't seem to be much progression in the difficulty at all until then. I was also a bit annoyed that there are like only four different mobs - it was free on Playstation Plus, if it wasn't I would not be happy
enemy variety is definitely one of the game's more painful weak points
I just dl and played this game few days ago and I have to say, this game is really underrated, because everyone compared it with souls game. If u play this game as a view of ACG action RPG, it was very great.
With the gameplay that the game has, it's inevitable for it to be compared to the souls series, as is the case with most souls-likes.
8-10 bucks on steam right now. More than worth it. Also with modding it’s insane! Even on console I enjoy it but it’s best enjoyed modded IMO
"the game is terrible yet I still love it" absolutely love that 😂
Deluxe is $15.00 on steam for the Halloween sale.
It's not a post-apocalyptic world because the story takes place during the apocalypse
Tbf the apocalypse has been going on for a while in the setting.
My first souls-like game
I love this game, I don't play many souls like so this was my most invested one. I actually played it years ago got all the way to the double boss fight (you know), and then beat them after over 50 or so attempts
But for some reason my dumbass deleted it out of content.
Except invasions, screw those 😭
10/10 for me so far still haven't finished but I don't see it disappointing me anytime soon
Good to know you're enjoying it! If you ever get to try the DLC, I hope you like it as much as the base game!
@@valmayorbruh i bought the deluxe edition (trust me when i ssay i forgot the name of the dlc) so im getting the full experience xd, it was at a great discount on steam 2 weeks ago

@@valmayorbruh ill see what I can to not die lol
It’s not inspired by god eater, it is good eater as in its set in the world of god eater and is a spin off game
It’s free for me with PlayStation plus so I mean why not get it
Hope you get the most enjoyment that you can from it!
Got it for free during March PlayStation Plus, been playing the last 2 days and ok so far, but a bit alarming about the level design and the stiff combat, but I wonder if it gets better with endgame abilities and such? Story is good so a plus there definitely
I think the combat is best experienced in the late game when you know how to fluidly mix in abilities during fights.
@@valmayorbruh then I will continue onward! To endgame!!!
I'd probably play a sequel as long as it doesn't go to heavy into God Eater territory
I actually really really like the cathedral.
Hi is the DLC of this game worth it? of pass? I saw the Deluxe version it has season pass which means it has 3 dlc.. What do you think?
I haven't tried the DLC of this game yet. They say it has a few good bosses, but that's about the extent of the good news I've heard about it.
I got this game on ps5 two weeks ago and finally got the platinum today. My hardest area was the cathedral of the sacred blood where I died the most cuz of the bs invasion, but on my 3rd ng+ it was easy once get stronger and u memorized the path. The story is rly good and for those who are into soulslike games and anime should give this a try.
Congrats on the Platinum!

It doesn’t take heavy inspiration from God eater, God eater series is the prequel to Code vein

It not bad but could be improve even more if you are expecting top tier souls game then no , the weapons in this game atleast all of them have a place , the DLC might as well be pointless out side of the boss fight also new game + add nothing but changes the enemy stats which make me sad because the dark souls series do add some of new item in new game + even tho i take 55 hour to finish the first run
The game difficult not to hard if willing to read the eneny animation
I do know alot of people hate the story of the game i do agree to some point but not to the point where people say it a instant 1/10 atleast a 5 or 6 for me because i dont care about story much
The game do have mod support for pc
The friendly ai it kind of useless the moment you reach new game + or the base difficult at late game but then again i only use them for traveling around the map for boss fight i never used them unless i already beat the boss once
3:37 You are loved. You matter. You are SPECIAL!
It's a prequal to God eater so that's all I need to know to be hooked to the game
the level design and "invasions" are why I'm glad I only ever gamepass'd or PS+'d this. They somehow make DkSII levels feel like real places and the invasions disrespect player observation by letting you correctly observe the number of enemies before deciding you're suddenly wrong
Wo Long Fallen Dynasty is great and at least lets you make your character anime af. Unfortunately we're still waiting for a good Soulslike with anime aesthetic all around
I guess I replay it again. I bought a key for the season pass for 5 bucks. The dlc are mediocre at best but it´s cool to have more levels of the depths.
I never got to try the DLC, but they say there are a few cool bosses in there.
Guys maybe can help me i have code vein game , but can t play . I try a lot way from youtube nothing didn't work . Game working with Asus Rog but with MSI laptop didn't work , same windows how Asus Rog be all programs instal what need .Others new and old games work , only this didn't work.

Glad you enjoyed the game man. After beating the game once, I just couldn't bring myself to have another go at it.
I have a good memory so white anor londo was never a problem for me. Guess i got lucky
Lucky you. You realize it's easy when you get the hang of the place, but the first few hours in there just sucked for me
Got it on the MichaelSoft store for like 7 fiddy.
That's a steal if I ever saw one
Bro... the more I hear that this game is anime dark souls the more it looks different... anime, yes of course. DarkSouls idk...
It's definitely a "souls-like" but to be called "anime dark souls" might be a bit of a stretch.
is code vein fun your first time around if you buy the game on sale?
Yes
Is it a game with diverse and interesting builds that will make you want to play through it again to try out the other weapons?
Awesome take on this man. Thanks for sharing your insight with us! I definitely agree with your take on the weapons.
A little fun fact god eater and code vein are the same universe
Also yes I am playing this game

The Cathedral made me drop this game. Nah, I love myself too much to go through that again. I'm not a masochist. I despise pain
The game goes on sale from time to time from what I've heard. Why not wishlist it so you get a notification when it does go on sale?
it's on steam summer sales now
if they did not nurf it to death would get a YES but all the nurfs gotta say no
I'm not aware of the nerfs you mentioned here. I'll have to go look them up
Politely disagree on a few points. Most especially the character creation. The character creator alone is worth the 10 bucks this game is routinely on sale for. Just making cool characters is rewarding in a system that allows so much creativity
The mask that hides your face you mentioned?
First play through is okay. It doesn't do much to warrant an NG+ run though. Congrats on the platinum though!
What is that blood veil
I don't remember the names of the veils anymore or where I got them. Sorry bud. I vaguely remember that the silver trench coat one and green jacket looking one were well into late game.
Downloaded this game on my ps5 to try it. It lasted 15 minutes before I uninstalled it. Definitely not for my taste.
@@saiseisenzurashi10 eew, I definitely pass.
The fact that you have a PS5 says it all lol.
@@Particle_Ghost What's wrong with a PS5?
The level design is fkin terrible though
its 85% off right now!
What are you waiting for then? Go get it! (of course, only if you want to)

Imo, I really think the game is bad. Performances issues fr, not only in transition corridors and my pc ain't that bad.
Gameplay is okay, I think? I didn't spend enough time to have a real opinion.
