    • @Crowbar
      @Crowbar 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Fran Couz
      you can play the game without traveling to 300.000 ls away stations. Just don't go there. You can spend very little time in supercruise and see everything the game has to offer.

    • @milkcarton6654
      @milkcarton6654 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      and you certainly dont need to play it 400 hours either to see all it has to offer...........

    • @BillyBl4ze
      @BillyBl4ze 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would argue that depending on your definition of "seeing all it has to offer" you actually might need more than 400 hours. Let's see...
      There are an absolute boatload of specific sites, for instance, that have been discovered. Crashed or emergency landed ships, ancient beacons, abandoned bases, alien ruins, artifacts and encounters, weird lifeforms, surface features like geysers and weirder anomalies in space... Going to see it all would take a considerable amount of time, and (I believe this has actually been confirmed too, I could be mistaken) when you scan some of these things, it gives you data which might be required to unlock other secrets when you scan other odd things. For instance, you might not get the same result from scanning a datapoint in an abandoned planetary base depending on whether you have scanned specific beacons thousands of light years away previously.
      Then there's all the different kinds of combat situations from interdicting pirates or authority convoys to joining battles in progress or investigating unknown signal sources. All of that can of course be done with your ship set up in ways that make it behave very, very differently. There's the PvP. Mining independently, mining for missions, searching for rare materials on planets. Influencing the galactic superpowers, toying with the minor factions in the game, trading for profit, trading to influence the world around you, joining one of the many player factions that work towards different goals like the Hussars who protect explorers returning to the bubble or the Fuel Rats who rescue stranded players with bingo fuel.
      Unlocking all the engineers to modify your ships in crazy and quirky ways, trying all the different types of missions from transporting tourists (there are hundreds of tourist beacons that show you interesting places in space and give you in-game lore) to assassinating large ships or smuggling slaves, participating in community goals, you could even contribute to some of the interesting projects out there to map the galaxy or do different kinds of research, the list goes on...
      But I'm pretty sure doing 100% of all of the above would take more than 400 hours. Of course, your definition of "seeing all it has to offer" could also just be hopping in and seeing that you fly spaceships around. By that definition you could do it in 10 minutes. I suppose it's a matter of taste how much of it you would enjoy doing, and some of us really, really like doing all or most of it. I personally think one of the reasons behind many of the people who get bored with the game is that they simply don't realize exactly how much stuff there is to do :)

      I like his enthusiasm but as far as an ordinary player goes this is insignificant. No gameplay story to it. If you're a philosopher then the things Braben speaks about may keep you occupied for a while, but a typical gamer wants a story to participate in and see unfold. Or several short ones, whatever.

    • @CaliMeatWagon
      @CaliMeatWagon 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There are a multitude of stories going on at any one time in Elite: Dangerous. But like real life, you have to pay attention to the media outlets (GalNet, system news, etc) to find out about them. For instance, I'm part of a player group and we just expanded into our 10th system. Some of the systems we are in, we control all the major assets, in some, we are facing opposition from an unknown force. And in another, we are currently in the middle of an election with another minor faction.
      And this is just what is happening "story" wise with one minor faction.

    • @pmurphy5948

    As a new player I must say my experience of ED on the Vive is SPECTACULAR!. Instead of just playing a game, I feel like I am living the life of a space pilot. So much so that reality is s shock when I remove the HMD. KUDOS on this masterpiece! PS PLEASE give us a first person alternative to the horrible third person gunner position. In VR its a real immersion breaker!

    • @ondrejsaska3201
      @ondrejsaska3201 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it breaks the immersion, I'm sure your ship's sensors can make you see the environment around the ship.

    • @Y2Kr4SHM4N
      @Y2Kr4SHM4N 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ondřej Saska Its an immersion-breaker. Frontier Developments need to place a screen on the gunners chair that depicts the vessel you're aboard as a wireframe depiction, with the real images of the enemy tangos as a hologram HUD or screen, akin to when you look at the HUD for the SRV or launching fighters. A different targeting system should also be in operation with this for the gunner.
      The third person camera should be an option, but one you must select. So immersion is maintained.

    • @danceswithglowstix22
      @danceswithglowstix22 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Only if you choose to play in open. PVP is still optional ;)

    • @Ollli1988
      @Ollli1988 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would have tried having a turret view where you sit in one of them and have when you look outside the view angle you see through the ship through your HUD (a bit transparent) so you still can track the enemy and have the movement locked to your input only.

    • @Y2Kr4SHM4N
      @Y2Kr4SHM4N 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Johan Ollikkala That's a good idea, but the turrets aren't large enough. There are, however many gunners seats on many larger vessels. Ie on the FDL there's a forward cockpit, on the ASP an underslung cockpit, the Anaconda, numerous unseen windowed ports etc...
      But I like the idea of all the crew in the same bridge. I like seeing the avatars. Seeing others counters the isolation and emptiness of E:D.

    I wonder how many of you people know the background to this whole 'Elite thing'. How David and his friend Ian Bell toiled over the game that started this all off back in 1984 when it was released, for 3 years while doing their coursework at the same time. David Braben is a personal hero of mine. Thank you David for all of your hard work and inspiration. I'm 10 years younger than you and I grew up loving Elite and loving my BBC B. You inspired me and I owe much of what I do now to you and Ian's inspiration.

    I'm really new to the game I only got it around three weeks ago but its just so incredible to me as its every dream I ever had come true.
    If I could I would go to space and it kills me to think that I will never be able to travel through out our galaxy but this feels so incredibly close and that means the world to me.

      I haven't played it yet but I know who this guy is and the 1984 game Elite. This man was years ahead of his time, if I played this game back in the 80s, the concept of "sandbox" and "open world" would be difficult to wrap my head around. Honestly incredible.

  • @BlackStar250874
    @BlackStar250874 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    What Braben said is very smart: Timescales are really so wide in our universe, that when two species meet and both are alive is a very lucky shot.
    He really knows his "game" and area of expertise. Unlike many other game designers.
    Not every ED gamer/commander is a "space case". you don't have to be, but the amount of immersion and feel when you really are is enourmous. How our galaxy is "treated" here is just plain beautiful, and although during the original Elite, the treatment was slightly typical Star Wars/Star Trek type (not forgetting multiple galaxies), here it is more downplayed, not so fantasy like anymore. I like it.

    A couple atheistic things I would love added to this wonderful experience we call Elite Dangerous. #1 During super cruise or when the hyper drive is going and we are in witch space I would love to occasionally see little micro impacts on the shields from space debris. #2 atmospherics on planets much like the aurora borealis, living in Alaska I get to see this display from the ground. Seeing in from the cockpit of an ASP X when approaching the dark side of a planet would be amazing. Other than that keep up the amazing work!

      Only the original one. It was impossible in Elite 2 and 3, but the one galaxy we had was much larger, and based on the Milky way. The first game's lore is way outdated. It might happen in ED but i dont really see the point. Also, magelanic clouds are closer hence more likely to be the ones we migth visit some day.

I want the Turner class, or a huge battle wagon of some sort. on to my other issue, when are you going to let us pledge to our player factions? I'd like to know when I scan a player if he's a enemy faction. really struggling trying to find some direction, almost triple elite now and want more to do.

    Honestly I just want to see Spansh's Neutron Router somehow integrated into the galactic map, now yes it is true that the galactic map does now take supercharge range and Neutron Stars into consideration when plotting a route, but it doesn't do it often enough.

    Wow, he almost made it sound like there was immergent gameplay happening in Elite dangerous. Sadly... not. You can't say that player organisation overthrow pre existing powers when you are forcing them to actually work together and give them something to do in the form of community goals. The players did nothing but follow your breadcrumbs to further the lore in own of 2 or 3 PRE WRITTEN directions.

    I am curious, I want to know if the game will have more realistic features such as being able to go to a bar on a space station for example. Talk to someone like in a secret organization to perform in secret missions. Still there is no life to the game. I am just wondering if we will have that kind of luxury in the game. I have not played star citizen yet, but from what I have seen, it looks amazing however I don't like the game mechanics such as the way the ships look in a dog fight. Elite seems to have a better dog fighting experience than star citizen to me. Anyways just wondering.

      I wonder why everyone is so keen for the so-called space legs.
      X Rebirth had them and they were awful. Running around in generic space station interiors, searching for generic people with generic dialogue options is not as fun as one might think. Players who were eagerly waiting for this feature, were soon demanding to make it optional and have all the interaction handled via the comms system. Going to a real bar with real people is fun, for sure. Alas, there is neither of both in a computer game.
      I for one would rather see more multilayer content. Let us trade, let us team up (as in clan, corporation, player group, you name it), give us things to do as a group. I don't need the big politics of EVE online, the content for smaller scale groups would be enough. As someone already said, multiplayer challenges would be great, where you'd need ppl with different roles to accomplish something. Or a player driven market for items. Or, or, or... I could go on for pages here.
      But space legs? There is already almost nothing to do on planets with the SRV. I don't want to have nothing to do on stations, too.

    I love what you have done so far but please let the fresh influx of money get your creative juices flowing come playable content intot he game, tweak the faction system, pirate bases to dislodge, more mission variety, roaming pirate gangs, more mission types, rake some of the RNG out of the sim (everything from resource hunting, to engineer upgrades, to point of interest density/variety) put in less linear ship variants.
    the fed dropship was a basic if promising start, lets see more builds based around fighter command, anti-swarm ships, missile boat, longer ranged heavy weapons platforms (passive benefits to range).

    • @IRMentat
      @IRMentat 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      P.S. For the love of whatever deity there may be, tweak the PC UI so that we can mouse drive the menus, allow for a third "fire weapon/use selected module" function so we are not dancing between the fire groups in every fight (I.E. we want to scan, shoot projectiles and use lasers independently). Less clicks, more focus on the flying.

    I think the Alliance has been kind of ignored by Frontier. We've got Federation ships and Empire ships but no Alliance specific ones? I think thats a shame and hope Frontier address that at some point real soon. On another point does anyone know if David Braben has had some sort of issue with his hands at some point in the past? Ive seen lots of interviews with David over the years (I've played Elite since 1984 btw) and he seems to have deformed fingers especially his pinkys. I've always wondered about this.

    • @jaumsz
      @jaumsz 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      His fingers don't look funny to me. He just seems to have a habit of keeping them in a crooked position when using his hands for expression. At other points he has them straight and looking perfectly normal.

      I'd like to see some alliance ships. Maybe the alliance have older slightly more analogue ships left over from an old war retrofitted with modern avionics. you know something a bit hodgepodge/asymmetrical that have specific attributes at the expense of others. I'm thinking of ships that have no shields but have awesome armour reinforcement. or without armour reinforcement the could have really high top speeds for specific jobs like smuggling. Maybe they use deflector shields or electronic warfare (that was outlawed after said war). there are loads of interesting options they could explore for the alliance.
      Maybe Alliance ships could be more adaptable (with regards to modules) and offer better upgrade abilities. I'm imagining there would have to be horrendously rare and expensive to balance everything out but if you get one and spend the money on the upgrades you could quite possibly own the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy . . .
