      Not only spoilt by computersoundtrack mentioning men as 'she' or 'her' but even worse: complete ridiculous nonsence as in photograph 14 refering to jeans as a fashion item (between 1850 and 1950 !) while jeans before 1950 never ever were a fashion thing. Complete nonsence. In the photograph you can clearly see a (gray) wool pants and not a (blue) jeans. Jeans were definately workingclothes only, for factory workers and farmers, not a fashion item. Do your homework.

    "LOVING: A Photographic History of Men in Love", our book, is where these images are taken directly from. As is some of the commentary - taken from our essay titled, "An Accidental Collection". We have over 3000 images in our collection. There are 327 in our book, from which these 15 are borrowed. Could you at least promote our book if you're going to use our collection for your content.

      Ok, you all have to realize that this video was not made in English to begin with. How do I know that? Mainly because of how the sentences are structured. It's obvious that some sort of translation program was used in order to make this video in English, so because of that, some of the pronouns and nouns are going to be misused, so everybody really needs to take a chill pill and let it go. I'm sure the creators of this video didn't make them to insult anybody.

    photograph #3 wasn't in the 1880 .. it is a photo from 1910 - 1920's this is too modern to have been in the 1880's .. why does the narrator keep calling one of the men her or she ?

  • @leeerickson4574
    @leeerickson4574 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you for the effort that went into this. I, personally, find the narration very distracting--so much so that it destroys the emotional impact the photos might otherwise have. My thoughts would be to either 1: redo the narration with an actual human voice, or 2: remove it and let the images speak for themselves. I offer this in a spirit of support for an even better video. Thank you for putting this together, and thank you for crediting the Nini-Treadwell Collection.

  • @nickthadick9
    @nickthadick9 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    The idea here is nice but there is no evidence that a lot of these are couples. #1 The two "farmer" guys look enough alike to possibly be brothers. #4 The two holding the "not married but willing to be" could be from a mining community or newly populated area and are advertising for wives. #5 The couple with the umbrella looks staged and possibly a joke. #7 looks like brothers also. #8 The "Cowboy Dance" was not an uncommon thing for men, not romantic couples, to dance together when no women were available. I obviously don't have evidence to offer of my opinion on these but that is no different than the lack of evidence offered in the video. I'm a gay male and I would love if all these were true to the descriptions given but there are too many LGBTQ+ people who have actually gone through hell for their relationships to just randomly pick photos and give them a backstory.

    • @michaelkantner6420
      @michaelkantner6420 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could be right, however gay couples have been photographed since the 1800's when cameras were first invented. Not to say that these photos are faked or that they are staged, none of us honestly really know. But there have been actual photos of gay couples on the web, you just have to look for them.

    • @hughnini2167
      @hughnini2167 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This video is a poor representation of our collection, and recently published book, "Loving: A Photographic History of Men in Love, 1850s - 1950s. For instance, #4 is only one of five that we have of this couple. Two are included in our book. They are definitely not looking for "wives". Our book speaks for itself. This video, which we had nothing to do with and don't approve of, doesn't.

      Agreed, and I've a bit to add. 'Gay' as an identity or a type/kind of human male is a fairly new idea. IIRC, it dates back to the late 1800's habit of pigeonholing everything so as not to label things as being the same due to superficial similarities. It wasn't until the late 1930's/WWII that distorted versions of all sorts of labels hit the general public. Previously, a man having sex with another man was an activity men engaged in. It didn't indicate anything one way or the other about what kind of man they were. They were men. Full stop. If no women are available, is there any reason not to dance with or have sex with a friend you're spending time with anyway?

      I think this person used a translator. And a speech app can't say for sure but I know when I use my speech to text sometimes things that I want written down doesn't come out right.
      But if you're that sensitive about a mispronunciation or someone misspeaking maybe you should find another video channel to watch.

    Very interesting and beautiful photographs. But the one of the "stag dance," at about 4:40, I think does not necessarily imply that ALL those men were gay...In certain situations, where women were simply "not there," or 100% unavailable, men often shared "more intimate" types of time/s together...not necessarily being gay/homosexual. Nonetheless, I love the photos, ALL of them!

    In at least two of the examples, the narrator referred to one of the pair as "her". I see no reason to address them in this manner -- they are male -- hence "Him".

    Why the obsession about man to man love? It is here, it is real, it is staying, get used to it or get over it. You are so focused on men but forget the fact that there is the love from woman to woman as well. It is so much of a brow raise when it is men but not so much and almost a normalcy when it’s women. The double standard of it all.

    Um sorry im gay myself so im not a hater . But many of the photos you say are gay are not in fact gay . It was a common thing in the old west or mineing camps that there was a lack of women an people then wanted to celebrate a holiday or just a day not working something that there was little of . Men back then we're very secure in who they were an it was not thought of like in modern times that if you danced with a guy that they were gay or homosexual the former word meaning happy an the latter not existing . Also it was common to show affection in a photograph for a friend , cousin or brother in this way you could write on the back of a picture but why not show it there is nothing odd about that especially at That time moving pictures would no be around till the 1890s . And the Kodak brownie camera had come on the market for people to take there own pictures an the language that was conveyed was through the talent of the artist taking the picture . Before the professional photographer was the one conducting the scene . The point that im making unless it has been documented in writing from that time an associated with the picture you can't say they were gay straight or just making a funny picture like the two guys holding the sign . I think this sign does discredit to my community with something like this. Your applying the way that people see things in this day and time . I think it's wrong to do that now an certainly to try an apply it to that time . I applaud all gay people what ever time they lived an there were plenty without adding straight people .

    Yet again...while it is likely some of these photos show gay men, I don't think we can assume that all do. Until notions of masculinity took a wrong turn and changed the ways that men can relate to each other with affectionate closeness, hand holding, closeness in physical space and more were homosocial, without implying homosexuality. Rather than claim all these images as queer, we should look at them as historical moments in a time that is different from our own present. The narrative is irritating because it sounds so naive.

    I, for one, cannot wait until the vogue for computer-generated narrative voices has passed. They are completely unnecessary in terms of production for anything but the most banal purposes. A human voice is always going to be better. Is this video being translated into so many languages that a robot is required for economic reasons? I doubt it. Bored to death with their tinny, flat delivery

    In most of them what we can clearly see is that they were siblings and until the 1940s this relationships were far more accepted than after the WWII.
    There has been gay people since mankind exists but the concept of homo , bi and hetero was created by the Austrian neurologist Sigmund Freud and spread around the world by other socialists , discrimination started during the 1930s and 1940s in Hollywood and got worst after WWII , before that there was nothing wrong with this photos and men and women that had sex with people with same sex as theirs didn't see themselves as homosexual because the concept did not exist , before the socialists fathered the concepts of homosexuality , bisexuality and heterosexuality people did not discriminate against what they called musical persons , they didn't even had a word for it.
    It was normal for both sexes to marry virgin with the opposite sex but with a good initiation with the same and some of them kept their first same sex lovers after they got married.
    People often accuse the Russians and eastern Europeans in general of being homophobes but forget that they have been under socialist rule until the 1990s , that the socialists created the homo , the bi , the hetero and consequently the homophobe and that they are still creating new sexualities and divisions today.
