    I use our citrus peels to make a citrus vinegar that is great for cleaning and smells better than plain vinegar. The oils are a good grease cutter to use in the kitchen for cleaning. I also clean mirrors or the bathroom sink and counters.

      Yes, I make the orange vinegar cleaner too. I made a clip of it in one of my frugal hacks video!

    I always make my own brown sugar. Just put molasses and white sugar in food processor. It is better because you know your own ingredients. I put it in a mason jar stores really well.

      I make my own powdered sugar by putting white sugar in a blender. Takes 5 seconds! It's a real handy tip when you run out of powdered sugar in the middle of baking.

  • @carolynchristy
    @carolynchristy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don't buy brown sugar any more. I use 1.5 teaspoons of molasses (more or less) in 1 cup white granulated sugar to use in my recipes. One less thing to buy and no brown bricks of hard sugar to find in the back of my cupboard. I also make my own pancake syrup using that same brown sugar and a bit of vanilla flavoring. I found that recipe in my Fanny Farmer Boston Cooking School cookbook I received as a wedding present in 1968. So happy to have found your channel!

    You could also make apple chips with the peels. Toss them with a little oil and bake them until crispy but not burned. When you take them out sprinkle them with cinnamon sugar while they are still hot. Very yummy

    Here is a tip for you that is very frugal and great for substitutes.....3 Tbsp aquafaba, which is the liquid that is left in the can chickpeas, can be substituted for one egg in baking. Works like a charm! So if you're ever out of eggs or you need to save your eggs for something else you can use this. And I always make roasted chickpeas so I always have some aquafaba laying around. Now this is definitely something that I used to throw out that I now save! I'm going to start saving my orange peels because this looks amazing. Also, love live love theses "use it up" videos. That's half the battle....if we can just find a way to use all the food we buy we are saving money, and being better stewards of the groceries we buy. I hate throwing away food thatch purchased. It's so wasteful and I feel bad when I do it. Especially meat....because if an animal dies so we can eat I like to make SURE I've not made it due in vain. I raise my chickens so a lot of time and money goes into getting that chicken to the table, plus butchering costs....I have a couple come process my chickens.....so I make sure to have zero waste. So my meat is quite expensive but I love the product, I'm positive they lived a great life, were treated wonderful, ate great food, and don't have hormones and antibiotics pumped into them.

    I made the “fried” apples on Sunday. I was already planning to have a pork roast, and decided to make them instead of just popping open a couple containers of applesauce. They were so delicious! Frank tried them before eating anything else, and the next thing I knew, they were gone, and he hadn’t even had a bite of his roast! So of course he took more! You’re right, they were super easy! Thanks, and take care.

    We have a woodstove. When I eat an orange, I take off the peel thinly and dry those stripes beside the fire. It takes only two hours. Then I put them in old, cleaned out jam jars until I need them. I use the peel to give a special taste to milk, puddings, tea and so on.

    I love your zero food waste videos! I am so excited about the apple recipe and am going to make it for Christmas. Such a coincidence you did this recipe! Last week we ordered a crazy expensive ham from The Honey Baked Ham Co. We have never ordered one before and wanted to treat ourselves. My husband was watching over my shoulder while I ordered and I made the mistake of looking at the side dishes. He really wanted their cinnamon apples but there was no way we were paying $25 for 3 lbs of cooked apples LOL. I still can’t believe what we paid for the ham! I can’t wait to surprise him with this! The orange simple syrup can also be used over under sweetened bread pudding.

    These are great ideas! Through the winter months, I bake pumpkins whole after washing them well. After allowing them to cool enough to handle, I tear off the tops and scoop out the seeds so that I can then peel out the pumpkin flesh and put it aside for pies, pumpkin soup, et cetera. Then I boil the baked skins/seeds for soup stock in water to cover about 2 inches and add a bay leaf if I have one. I do the same thing with hard squash. I'm not interested in roasting the seeds raw, and I find pumpkins and hard squash difficult to cup up raw. This stock is really good; it freezes well; and I sub it out for chicken stock all the time. This is another good way to put food to good use that would otherwise be discarded. Happy Holidays!

    Very creative ideas. When I saw the frozen orange peels, I was wondering what you would do with them. I have never even heard of candied orange peels. The grilled cheese looks very yummy. I will try that. Also looking forward to trying the apples - love crockpot recipes. Enjoy your weekend.
