On the flip side of that, if it were possible, it's likely that layering fusions would probably have problems anyway; powerful fusions take up more energy, and a layered fusion is much more powerful than a fusion, leading to significantly less time to do anything.

Vegito purposely toyed with Buuhan to free his friends, unaware of the time limit. Vegito was literally trying to kill Zamasu and was going to finish it with a final kamehameha but failed in the process because he was unaware of the fact his fusion time would end
The cocky one is Gogeta, not Vegito. Vegito has a cocky attitude, typical of saiyans that get higher into their SSJ forms, but he takes fights seriously. Gogeta meanwhile has toyed around and mocked his opponents whenever possible in the fight.
