  • Hey! Thanks so much for watching.
    In this video I somewhat respond to hurtful and mean comments from my reaction video last week. People seem to believe non-binary people aren't real.... where here I am to rant a little about that and maybe show support to a community that definitely needs it (also tw for the comments in the video im about to link because even I get hurt by some of them):
    • REACTION TO ARIELLE SC...
    Let me know what you think in the comments below!
    Here are some ACADEMIC sources. The issues with these is that you usually can only access them if you are subscribed to these journals or part of a university. If you cannot access them, I’m sure when you find them they will at least have the abstract for you to read.
    You all want Medical Scientific proof, here you go:

    And I know no one cares about to social sciences, but its a REAL thing. I have over 50 articles talking about non-binary identities and people. Here is one of them:

    (as a trans guy) i don't understand how other trans people can believe that nonbinary identities don't exist. it's really hypocritical to think that these identities aren't real as opposed to their own when cis people could say the same about binary trans people. plus i believe that "the gender binary/there is only male and female" is a widely western idea, not one actually based in reality or accepted worldwide.

    • @jimimased1894

      er. no 2 genders is accepted worldwide across all cultures near universally. its not that "nonbinary identities don't exist" its that 90% of the world is "non binary" theyve never been entirely seperate, most people arent entirely one way or the other

      There are about 15 societies worldwide that accept more than 2 genders in common life. Gender is a social construct. People can be whatever they want as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone else. End of story. Sorry but that’s the truth not my fault

    As a cis-gendered, straight, middle aged mum of 3 children, if I can see that your gender is how you view your inner self, then if someone believes they are non-binary, then THEY ARE NON BINARY.
    No two people are the same genetically, so why should we assume that spectrum of gender and sexuality cannot also be infinite? All this male/female, 30/70% stuff just obscures the issue. If you only feel 70% male (regardless of the gender you were assigned at birth), then you are what you believe yourself to be. Whether that's male, non binary, gender queer, or agender. It's your perception of your gender that is important and the fact you feel like that is the 'proof' people seem to be looking for!
    Maybe I have a far too simplistic view of this, but as someone who is not part of the LQBTQA+ community, I honestly just think that everyone is an individual and we should just accept how each person wants to be seen.

    I know it was just a passing comment at 13:30 about feminine presenting non-binary people but it honestly made me feel so valid because I've never heard anything even remotely positive about non-binary people who aren't androgynous so thank you so much! I'm in the process of figuring out my identity and I am so glad I found your channel. I hope you have an amazing day and continue to make videos and be a ray of sunshine. You're awesome!

      JacquilynRose I’m also a nonbinary person who doesn’t look androgynous. I was assigned female at birth, so I still look very feminine. I’m still trying to work out exactly how I want to look and present my gender, mostly because I really want to pass as gender neutral if at all possible. Maybe we’ll both figure our presentations out at some point soon. :)

      To prove how feminine I am
      1. I wear skirts and dresses all the time.
      2. I refer to myself as "atashi" when speaking Japanese.
      3. I play as female characters in video games when given the choice. (I main Rosalina & Luma in smash ultimate because Rosalina is both a princess and a goddess.)
      4. When speaking Japanese, I will use "no yo" at the end of sentences.

      Honestly androgyny is so weird. It's weird how if you are afab, your expected to dress masculine to pass and if your amab, you need to dress femininely to pass... did yall miss the point of being nonbinary? We dont identify with our assigned gender so dont hold us to those standards!

      if you're going to present the science aspect sweetheart at the least have knowledge regarding the science you're referring to 😂 it's not as simple or basic as you seem to think, chromosomes and DNA is far more complex and less direct, and even then, for all we know there could literally be a gene that contributes to transgender identities.

    • @rubydragon1388
      @rubydragon1388 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      dude, what're you getting so angry about? the fact some people truly do feel this way and will go so far as to get surgery, hormones, etc to feel comfortable?
      take a hecking chill pill x'D is it a personal insult/attack to you to identify as anything other than male or female? well, if so, grow up. people will identify as whatever the hell they want, and yelling at them "YOU'RE WRONG!!!" won't do jack shit but get ya all riled up for nothing.
      if you SERIOUSLY think sex = gender, then explain to me why a trans person will go to a doctor, be diagnosed with gender dysphoria, and perscribed to transition. DOCTORS.
      **sighs and pats your shoulder** ahh, you'll learn, one day~

      By telling you that as a Biology major, I know it isn't as straight forward as that lmao and I'm sick of seeing ignorant people trying to use it to fuel a senseless and hateful "argument". Literally all medical professionals who work in and have put a lifetimes supply of work into working with and understanding transgender and non-binary people, not to mention aid people to transition because it's legally and medically recognised as legitimate? Yet you still flail in the comments section of a youtube video getting triggered by something you don't understand rather than take the opportunity to educate yourself? Sure ok.

      What's really sad is how everyone who disagrees with me can't back up their claims or defend their arguments so they just get mad and say "fuck off". When I was a kid I was taught to not be reactive to criticism, to take it in stride. I guess they don't teach you kids anything these days.

    I thought trans = identifying as a different gender from the one you were assigned at birth, which means that technically non-binary people are trans? But like I know NB people who choose to use the trans-term for themselves, and I know NB people who don't.

    • @Nhouah
      @Nhouah 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yes, that's the definition of trans : not being exclusively the gender you were assigned at birth ("exclusively" because some people are fluid or bigender, etc.) so trans includes non binary people if they identify as such.

    • @imgoingonholidaytovietnam3631
      @imgoingonholidaytovietnam3631 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Nope, being trans, is transitioning to a different gender, like ftm. If you're non binary, you cannot transition to a non binary person, unless.... I don't know how you'd go about that.

    • @Nhouah
      @Nhouah 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @im going on holiday to Vietnam : no, that's not the definition of trans. Trans is not defined by transition, it's defined as not being exclusively the gender you were assigned at birth. Besides, non binary people can transition to be read as their gender (they/them pronouns, gender neutral titles, you can actually have an X gender marker in some countries etc.) or they can transition to be read as male or female as well, because gender expression and the way society reads you is not the same than gender identity itself. Also some FTM and MTF don't transition.

    • @litenkis
      @litenkis 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      im going on holiday to Vietnam no, that's wrong. Trans = transgender = identifying as a gender different than the one you were assigned at birth. With your definition, you're basically saying that you can't be trans unless you transition, and that's completely wrong. By your definition, trans singer & TH-camr Ryan Cassata isn't trans since he's not on hormones and probably won't go on hormones.

    • @hatelove5715
      @hatelove5715 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No, trans means you're transitioning from one binary to the other. It makes literally zero sense to say someone is trans and non-binary at the same time. It's an oxymoron.

  • @lunacelestia77
    @lunacelestia77 7 ปีที่แล้ว +36

    • @thepeculiarmaple
      @thepeculiarmaple 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah! Some people dont need/want to transition, but may transition socially. Also, surgery can be scary and even dangerous (depending on what is done),or unnecessary if they dont have dysphoria towards that specific part of them, so yeahhh

      People do this weird thing where they see someone asking for the same things everyone else has, nothing more, and interpret that as that person trying to be special. It's a thing I've noticed with a variety of social issues. Before you accuse someone of trying to be special, look at what they're asking for and look at the broader social context surrounding that.

      @Haley Donovan There's no set likes or dislikes for gender. Gender isn't determined by clothing, toys, colors, or even activities.
      Gender dysphoria is when you're not happy with your gender so you transition to have nothing to do with the opposite gender because it makes you upset. Non-binary does not exist because your gender is not set on appearances, likes, dislikes, etc, and has nothing to do with dysphoria.

    Many indigenous cultures around the world still recognize gender and sexual diversity since time immemorial, especially before the advent of christianity and the global onslaught of imperialism.
    Multiple societies of Indigenous peoples in the Western Hemisphere (Turtle Island/Abya Ayala/Americas) also have gender diverse cultures. In North America alone, there are more than 150 First Nations that have such traditions. Many have at least three designate identities and roles of gender. For example, the Diné (Navajo) nation has a total four: Asdzáá, Hastíín, Nàdleehé and Dilbáá. Only in the late 1980s that a number of Native American people have started to reclaim their sacred cultural identities of gender and sexuality as being Two-Spirit. Some of their ancient civilizations also have Divinities who are gender ambiguous. The Aztecs have Ometeotl and the Incas have Quariwarmi.
    In pre-Spanish Philippines, there are those who are Asog and Bayot (compared to their contemporary term Baklâ) who are respected among the ancient matriarchal social class of warrior priestesses known as the Babaylan. Androgynous and Intersex Filipinos Gods include the Lakapati, the spirit of Fertility and Libulan, one of the seven moons of Visayan lore.
    On the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, the Bugis ethnic group traditionally have five: Makkunrai, Oroané, and also Bissu, Čalabai, and Čalalai. In Java, they have Waria. Kānaka Maoli people in Hawai'i have Māhū. The Amhara tribes of Ethiopia have Wandarwarad and Wandawande. Parts of South Africa have Sitabane. In Congo, they have Kitesha. In South Asia, they have Hijra, Khwaaja Sira and Aravani. Particularly, Hijra identities are among the world's oldest continuing cultures of gender variance, and their roots can be traced back to 4,000 years ago. In ancient Egypt, there was Sekhet and Hem. Even in ancient Judea, there's a record of six genders: Tumtum, Aylonit, Saris and Androgynos in addition to Zachar and Nekevah.
    All of these cultures have independently recognized gender and sexual diversity one way or another. Being Nonbinary and Intersex are just as ancient as Human existence. In many of these societies, they're valued and respected as healers, caretakers, and keepers of lore and traditions. The only thing that is new is gender and sex binarism and transphobia that have been savagely institutionalized in today's society, mainly because of the last 500 years of colonization, religious/political persecution and cultural genocides.

    Gonna be honest I'm not even 100% sure of my gender identity and I am 28. I have been identifying as Genderfluid for the past year. And it does fit me for the most part. It just seems like I am male 90% of the time and the other is like 9 % Agender and 1% once in a blue moon female moments. I have heard it all. That people like me make Trans people look like a joke. That I am mentally ill. That I am I Satan's child. (Yes I was literally called that). I was recently even called a "Thing". I know its just words and it shouldn't hurt me but it does. Not only does it hurt me but it also confuses me. I suffer from almost daily top dysphoria cuz I can't bind and have alot of anxiety. I do think bout having top surgery and one day many starting T. But then I question myself more cuz I really don't feel the need for bottom surgery. Alot of my friends are in the LGBT+ community whether they are non binary, trans, pan ect. But it seems like the one straight cis Ally I have supports me more than the friend I have who is trans mtf. In fact my trans friend...don't even believe me.
    So I agree with you its sad that a cis person is more supportive that other LGBT+ people are. Sorry for the rant its just the "2 genders" and "non binary isn't real" debates have effected me and wanted to comment and thank you for making this video.

      Dude listen, no one feels 100% masculine all the time. It doesn't mean they're non-binary. No one adheres one hundred percent to some nebulous idea of masculinity or femininity. It doesn't happen, and it doesn't mean that everyone is non-binary it just means everyone is an individual with individual experiences and feelings. And trust me, trying to force people to accept your individuality is going to make almost no one want to respect you.

      JJ m there is no difference. There are males and there are females. There are boys there are girls it means exactly the same thing. You are ignorant and don't understand the difference between being something and doing something. your gender is immutable it is biological. Gender roles are just that societal constructs. Playing football doesn't make you a boy any more than being a ballerina makes you girl. You understand the fucking difference you idiot?

    As a bisexual person who is questioning their gender, and currently using the term genderfluid, I feel very nervous about trying to join the LGBT+ community, because people who identify in the middle of the sexuality and gender spectrums are SO often invalidated and told to "pick one" or that we're lying to ourselves. It's very scary. I feel like I don't belong anywhere. I feel like I don't belong in the "straight" community or the LGBT+ community, especially because I live in a very religious, Christian state. My parents will never accept my sexuality or my gender, and a lot of my friends won't either. It's been really horrible since I found out how unaccepted people who identify similarly to myself are in the LGBT+ community. Finding a community for me is SO HARD!

      Hello my fellow lovely human, i myself identify as bisexual, as well as bigender. So i fall in the "middle" of both XD I know exactly how you feel, i live in a strict christian household, im not out to my family, i know for a fact that they would never accept me. Im out only to select friends of mine. Im basically just here to let you know that you arent alone. You arent alone surrounded by other LGBT+ people who dont fully understand. Theres so much controversy everywhere, between LGBT+ and non LGBT+, and even in the community itself, whether its about sexuality, gender, or expression. But what really matters is finding people who love and care for you not matter who you are, and loving and accepting yourself. It doesnt matter what other people think of you, because really, they arent the ones living your life, you are. You have to make the best with what you got. If you want to be happy, then find something that makes you happy. I know how hard it can be to deal with knowing people who are important to you wont accept you. I know how shitty that can make you feel. But if they cant accept you, if they cant love you for who you are, then they dont deserve your awesomeness. You deserve to be happy, you deserve to be safe and have a good life.

    2:27 : the problem is that there are tons of kids who actually treat it like this. And I think the conflict from within the trans community is mostly over the fact that there are trans people who have really suffered through transition and are seeing these non-binary kids who wake up one day saying they're three genders and wake up the next day saying they're unicorns and waking up the day after that saying they have no gender at all. And if you look at that rationally, it makes at least some sense that those "hateful" trans people are discontented. Maybe they react poorly and angrily, but I think it's perfectly reasonable to be outraged if an issue you've struggled with is being (in your opinion) mocked.
    As an outside example, consider this: If some third grader had recently broken their arm very badly, and was going though a difficult time with recovery, they would likely react angrily if some other third grader started making a massive deal over a scratch they got one day. Because maybe the scratch hurt-- maybe it hurt a lot, but it didn't put the second third grader in a cast for three months. Hence the first third grader would be pissed off. I understand that the above is a relatively flawed analogy, but it's the best I've got right now.
    I'm not discrediting non-binaryism, because I do think there are people who truly feel such immense discomfort living as either binary gender that they can only live peacefully as non-binary, but I think most of the people who chose to label themselves as non-binary these days are under the age of eighteen and are doing so because they saw the term on the internet and thought it was cool and maybe kind of applied to them. That is what seems to be the problem. That is what people are irritated about.

    • @davyjones6949
      @davyjones6949 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel like to make this analogy work you have to take a bone fracture versus a bone crack. A crack can heal without treatment, but sometimes it better heals in a cast. A fracture is always better in a cast. They actually hurt the same, one may heal faster or more easily, but they fight about who hurts more and who has the thicker cast...

      Aloysius i'm non binary and I am now 66. It's not about confusion but more about not giving up either your masculine side or your feminine side but embracing both. I will answer to either he or she and am comfortable with both. As a kid I experienced gender diaspora and probably headed towards transitioning. But I came of age during the 60's and was influenced by the non gender style of the hippy era. Gender become more internal then outward appearance to me. Besides it was more natural to be neutral rather then alter myself to fit one or the other. I can fit in either world. Mother, housekeeper, bread winner home builder and have reached a point where I don't have to choose. If you ask if I'm a man or a women the only answer is yes.

    this video is kinda old but i wanted to say thanks for it. im kinda questioning nonbinary, im pretty sure im neither male or female but one the main things really holding me back and making me doubt my legitimacy is that gender has become such a joke these past few years, especially nonbinary, people treat it as a joke and as if its just people looking for some reason to be different or special or to get attention, but thats the thing thats holding me back. its really terrifying, i know if i was to come out as like agender or something people would just think "oh theyre confused." or "oh one of these 20 year old sjw special snowflakes". like how would i even begin to not get treated as a joke, its all so disheartening, and it really makes having that "ah-ha!" moment of discovering who you are just kind of...really scary. That's what's holding me back, I think I'm kind of in denial because I don't want to be non-binary because I know how hard it will be to be out but also how hard it will get to stay in the closet.

      Thats terrible. I can see why you'd feel that way. I dont get why gender identity/expression has to be so close minded or specific? Why cant we expand it just a little;it's a spectrum. This world has become more accepting,yet also more confusing at the same time due to the mix of support/backlash from different viewpoints.

      Nouah oh I know.. but most of them generally have male and female. just not as black and white... Like (i think) India which have 5 genders.. but its Female, MTF, intersex, FTM, Male... I think its how it was... even so, its male and female and you can be inbetween.. Like grayscale as apposed to a rainbow...
      But Just because I believe in something different, I wont ever belittle someone, or invalidate them because of what they believe / know they are.

    • @Nhouah
      @Nhouah 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think that these societies have different notions of gender anyway and what you're saying about them having female, male, trans female, trans male and intersex you're saying it using tools and labels coming from our society and our notions of gender but I'm not sure that we can exactly equate the two, like it's not strictly equivalent because even the notions of male and female are different in a different culture or even at a different time. You know what I mean ? Also there are cultures with gender that are completely not female or male too. If someone who knows more about that topic sees that comment, I would be interested to learn more, and correct me if I'm wrong ^_^

    Fascinating topic. I take anti-androgens and oestrogen supplements. I'm what people would refer to as a MTF transgender or transsexual person. So I've covered the basics. And already offended someone because some people take offence to the word "transsexual". Either because of its historical context or over whether it should contain one S or two. Apparently this matters to some people, since it's a question of biology vs lifestyle.
    I've identified as transgender for most of my 49 years, but only started HRT this year. Blood tests over a long period of time have continually shown that my testes produce extremely low levels of testosterone and extremely high levels of oestrogen. So genetically I'm male, but what about hormonally? Male or female?
    I've been on oestrogen supplements long enough that I've joined the itty bitty titty club. Sometimes I don't feel like shaving and am happy to get about town with a 3 day growth.
    I like wearing some of my wife's clothing occasionally, but she had multiple fashion tastes and would sometimes happily shop for her clothes in the menswear section.
    I could keep going, but the point I'm trying to make is that life is complicated and complex. I struggle to see how we can make accurate assessments of what defines a non-binary person, or a gender-fluid person, or even a MTF or FTM person, when examples such as the ones I've shared from my own life illustrate that the issues and the questions surrounding the issues are unresolved.
    And BTW this is my favourite TH-cam channel devoted to transgender issues, even though I'm a MTF.

      Oh. I just remembered. Dunno how I could have forgotten. In the state I live in (I live in Australia), I can legally change my gender to F or to X, It's already M, so no need to change it to that. And that would be reflected in a reissued birth certificate. So someone changing to X may not actually exist, but they can still vote!

    A while back I left a comment on one of your videos related to dysphoria and passing and introduced myself as an ftm nonbinary person. I got a response from a trans guy who was mostly just uninformed, but asked questions like 'how can you be FtMasc and also nb'. I assumed he just didn't know and was willing to learn so took some time to explain the basics to him and a bit about myself as well. After all that, and being trans himself, his response was 'so does that mean you're just a girl but a tomboy?' which felt (obviously) incredibly shitty. I really appreciate you making videos like this for that exact reason. It's hard enough to get the support of the majority of society with so little representation and knowledge without also having to worry about being invalidated within my own community as well. (On a sort of unrelated note, I'm currently in the middle of working towards starting T and hella excited! A whole bunch of your videos made the process a lot easier). Thank you so much for doing a little bit to tip the scale.

      Paradox the video does nothing outside of "they exist because they identify as that." It doesn't explain how someone could be non binary and ftm. It's just an issue of definitions I'm asking about. If someone is FtM it means they're a trans man, that is their sex is female but their gender identity is male, i.e. it still falls under the binary definition.

    • @hatelove5715
      @hatelove5715 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thank you so much for this Chase. Needed it really bad this week.
    I'm still trying to navigate my gender, and my facebook feed is full of "did you just assume my gender" memes, which is extremely discouraging.
    Back in 2008, I was on the road to transitioning. I was getting ready to physically transition -- but I panicked. I didn't feel "man enough" to transition. Now, 8 years later, those feelings about my gender still haven't left.
    I have come to the determination that I am transmasculine. So, yes, trans. But, completely ok with not being "fully male." This could change once I start hormones. Who knows, maybe my mind is protecting myself from the way I currently present, and once I present as more masculine that will "go away." But, what I do know is that anything that I have read, watched, or listened to about non binary gender has fit my feelings way better than anything else has.

    • @thedukeofweasels6870
      @thedukeofweasels6870 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's perfectly fine to feel that way. Even though I identify strongly as a man or binary transman I don't find the need to "be male". I'd never get bottom surgery I just don't need that to feel like a man but I don't think that makes me any less valid. Despite my top dysphoria I don't even bind, I just sarcastically identify as a dude with boobs. This idea that you need body dysphoria to be valid as trans is stupid, you are whatever identity you are regardless. But even if you don't fully identify as a man that's still valid as well.

      Loke why is it problematic

    • @MrZumo4
      @MrZumo4 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's just that you talk about how non binary people can be and are trans as well as binary trans people, and when you say this you separate the two and make it sound like non binary isn't under the trans umbrella. You feel me?

    • @sarahholness596
      @sarahholness596 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Loke I kinda get what you're saying but I think you just misinterpreted what he was saying. I think that when he said that he didn't just mean people who're non binary but not trans he meant like anyone that identifies as non binary regardless whether they also identify with being trans. So like he meant he knows more people who are non binary (might also be trans) than trans people (who don't identify with being non binary at all)

    • @MrZumo4
      @MrZumo4 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've tried watching videos by a certain TH-camr who is trans when I got really confused as what I identify as. I watched one of his videos and he kept saying that nonbinary and other genders like agender and genderqueer and other ones aren't real and are "transtrenders". It made me feel like such shit by seeing someone who is also my age saying that my gender isn't real because this guy said so. Nonbinary people can fall under the trans umbrella if they choose to. No person who identifies singularly as a trans person and not also nonbinary can't decide if people like me who are nonbinary if they should be allowed to be considered trans. I'm so glad you said what you did about feminine presenting nonbinary people, it made me feel a little more valid about how I present more feminine naturally.

    This video made my day. I feel strangely happy just to have hear the words "yes, they are real" and made me have hope for some future. I used to feel like I was the only one that felt this way and that I was alone. I grew up in a very conservative place. I had no idea what transgender or nonbinary was or that it even existed. I just looked at men with envy, "why can't I have a penis?", "Why can't my chest feel flat?" but I simply kept quiet for years ever since I was a boy and only became stronger as a teenager. Until I decided to tell my mom "I wanna be a man.. I feel it. I just feel like I am. Like if somehow this body was a costume that I can't take off.." But now there came another problem. I couldn't fit entirely. I never felt at home with the boys and never felt at home with the girls. It was like I was stuck between Man and uncertainty. I feel mad. Like I wasn't a real trans person. Person, came to my head. I am a between a man and a mystery. What is this? What is it that I'm feeling? Once I told the world how I felt people started taking their distance. Cool with me, at least I knew who my friends are and who trully loves me. But then I got separated from my cousin out of fear that hat I felt could be manipulated into him. I was shattered. But the worst came at school. People trew stuff at me, called me slurs, said that I was weird. "WHO CARES? they can say what the want Im tougher than this" but then I heard my own mother scream at someone on the phone. It was about me. Nothing nice. I decided to take my life as I felt I was it was better for the poeple around me to stop being harrased. I could take it. But my friends, my mom, my brother. It is not me, they are messing with them. About how could they have raised a person with such mind? I failed thankfully. Then I met someone at the hospital. They were my caretaker in there. They asked why was I there. I responded with the whole story. They smiled at me and they said "I was that kid too" after that a new world oppened for me. I was not alone. My family was not alone. They told my doctor and she mentioned a place I could go to interact with teens like me. Then my mind expanded once I entered that place. It felt safe. I even knew adults who had gone what I had gone through in the damn 80's. it was not a "phase", a teenagery stuff. They became my support. They offered me a place to be me and not to worry about being beated up. They offered and opportunity for my mom to know other parents of kids like me who were nonjudgemental! I was finally at peace with myself. Gender is a spectrum, like a rainbow. And now that Im transitioning into an adult, going to college and such stressing shit, I can at least know one thing that is true in my life. I am a nonbinary man. And FUCK PEOPLE THEY ALL SUCK. No eceptions.

      You’re valid, I know one reply isn’t going to magically make you feel 100% better about yourself but it’s still worth saying.
      Gender identity is not the same as gender expression, sure a lot of people stick to what’s stereotypical for their expression of their gender but a boy, trans or not, wearing a dress doesn’t make him less of a male person. A nonbinary person who presents what society says is ‘feminine’ does not make them less of a nonbinary person.
      I’m sure you’re beautiful and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise, sure I don’t know you and you don’t know me but I really hope you know I care about you

    it's kinda stupid to say that someone who's non binary isn't trans (that's if they want to identify as such) because they don't fully identify with the gender they were assigned at birth like other trans people so aren't they also trans then. even if they don't want to transition, if they identify as trans they are still trans, we don't call a trans guy who doesn't want to transition medically a girl because that's disrespectful and transphobic

    • @aleksfyfe5165
      @aleksfyfe5165 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      however I understand the fear that it would hinder my transition because I see people on the Internet "pretending" to be trans and doing it to make fun of people and doing stuff like "I identify as a butterfly you better use my pronouns!" but I in no way see how it would hinder my medical transition because a doctor should only look at it on a professional level and not a childish one. it may make me not feel safe in coming out because I'd feel ridiculed but it wouldn't at all hinder my medical transition

I mean If I weren't to transition I'd still be called trans which is the same as a non binary person, if they feel as of they identify under the trans umbrella then they can still use trans and no one can tell them otherwise

    Chase! Your hair is on pointe! The anticipation for what color of the rainbow you were going with this time starting to kill me by inches... I love how you made your background match so perfectly. So cool!
    No, but seriously...
    I am an intersex chimera AFAB. If non-binary had existed as a description at an earlier time, it would have been perfect. I was relatively content being somewhere between an effeminate man and a masculine woman. It was very confusing for me to be read as a soft butch lesbian or a hardcore tomboy based on whether people thought I was straight or gay, and wtf was that even supposed to mean to a bisexual intersex person, anyway? I always felt comfortable as a guy, but I happened to have a body other people were more comfortable interpreting as female, and much of my life the message was clear: there was nothing I could do about it.
    I have always been far more comfortable with gender neutral language, because it seemed like too much to ask to be gendered correctly (we're talking over a decade ago) while I was generally seen as a cute girl. If I knew then what I know now... I would have insisted on male pronouns from go.
    The concept of transition is problematic for me, because I feel like people like me, who don't have a huge amount of body dysphoria (it's there, it's just not my biggest problem) shouldn't feel like they have to transition to be taken seriously. We should be able to exist as female bodied men and male bodied women and it shouldn't be a big deal to use neutral or correctly gendered language. And people like me, who could have been happily in between forever if society didn't insist so hard that everybody needs to choose a side, shouldn't have to deal with that pressure. Maybe someday intersex and non-binary people won't have to deal with that pressure, for now, it's maybe enough to say there could be enough room in the space between male and female for all of the gender nonconforming people under the trans umbrella.
    I do identify myself as a transgendered person, because I am generally interpreted as a female and am pursuing gender confirmation through legal and medical means to change my general interpretation to male, because I am more comfortable with that identification.
    I have some serious medical complications that would actually be more difficult to accept if I identified with my assigned gender. FTM hormonal therapy is actually going to literally save my life, even though transition is not my primary motivation for pursuing it (and why I'm starting testosterone at thirty two instead of nineteen, when I discovered transition existed)... Like, transition is a cool bonus for me, but I would probably rather die if I were actually attached to being female. Scary thought.
    But honestly... All these years that I've had to deal with people insisting I'm a girl and pushing their own agendas and putting their comfort with my body ahead of my own comfort with my body, and even my basic health and wellness... All because people who aren't living inside my body and inside my head thought that their opinions should matter more to me than my own... What is really so difficult about it?
    What is so difficult about calling people they/them if they express to you that she/her or he/him causes them discomfort? Like... If you mispronounce my name it falls on my ears like a truckload of cymbals being dumped into a ravine... but if you pronounce my name correctly it's like angels' singing. It's such a subtle, simple thing.
    When I decided to embrace transition last year (nearly two years ago, really) and started using male pronouns exclusively, I had not expected it to be a big deal, like, internally. I'm not convinced I could do it justice to describe the feeling that that one tiny adjustment has made in my life. It's like somebody filled my coffee cup.

    This video actually made me cry and I'm not one to confess this easily. Thank you for taking the time to even just try to understand us, that alone is brilliant and you're not "taking it to the next level" what you're describing is exactly how I feel!
    That invalidating one another, I feel exist in the gay community too. I've heard gay/lesbian people invalidate bisexual people for not being gay enough when they're also rejected for not being straight...
    I really think there's nothing worse than being invalidated by the very people who you feel should understand you the most. It fucking hurts.

Made me feel super invalidated. So uh... For all my other NB pals, you're valid. Your gender is valid. You are who YOU say you are. You WILL be who you want to be some day. We have to stick together as a family. I love you all.

    Ok so one thing I wanted to add is that in the future if the main goal of your video is to affirm a certain group of people try to make it as accessible to them as possible. I understand you need a bold title to pull people in but if you re a non-binary individual who has faced so much negative energy from the Internet the title "DO NON-BINARY PEOPLE EXIST" might make them very uneasy about clicking this video.
    We don't know if the video is going to be affirming or if it's going to attack identities.
    I appreciate everything you said in this video and I thank you for being an advocate and speaking out but in the future try to ensure that the group you are supporting in a video know that it's going to be supportive just from the title alone. I want as many people to see this as possible, especially non-binary people who need to hear the positive message.
    I hope this doesn't come off as rude, thank you again.

I only subbed about a week ago, and it was after the first video I watched; I knew you'd be the sorta dude who would be respectful and mature about the hot fuckin' topic right now about US, the nbs, against all the rants and uneducated content out there which is so much louder than the positivity we receive. So, thank you Chase. :)

    Thank you Chase. I'm 27 and just in the past year has my identity started to make sense to me. I've been surrounded by poster-worthy binary trans people ever since I came out in 2010 and have always been so full of self doubt. At the beginning of this year I was at a breaking point, I felt completely invalid, unlovable, and I hate to use this word but I legitimately felt like I was a freak. I wanted to die. I was so scared for my safety.
    You have changed that! I watch your channel almost every day now before work and it just really helps to know other people are out there like me!
    I'm pretty sure you said "Nonbinary people are real" at least 20 times in this video. And maybe you're right, maybe it won't change other people's minds. But it changes life for us to hear those words. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

    (BEFORE YOU READ THIS I'D LIKE TO CLARIFY THAT I AM NOT REPRESENTING ALL NON-BINARY INDIVIDUALS, I'M ONLY ONE PERSON, SO I CAN ONLY TALK ABOUT MY OWN OPINIONS) I'm a non-binary person, and honestly, I don't really think it's that bad to not see us as real. As long as you're not telling me what I am and as long as you don't hurl abuse at me for no reason, it's not much of a problem to me, honestly, as long as you respect my identity and see me in the way I want to be seen. I have to admit, some identities sound a bit strange even to me, for example, I don't quite get how someone could feel that they're multiple genders at the same time. I'm trying to fix that, but even while I don't understand it, I'm not going to dictate anything about the way you feel. The only way someone could possibly know whether trigender people are actually real is if they were trigender themselves. Honestly, if you tell me you identify as a washing machine, I'll respect that, hell, I'll even march with you at washing machine pride, but I still don't think it's fair to say that everyone who doesn't understand or believe in non-binary people is a bad person. Gender me correctly, make an effort to start understanding my identity, and understand that I know my gender better than you do, and we'll be okay.

    • @cha1966
      @cha1966 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I like this comment although I don't fully agree :)
      I am non binary too and I think there is a difference between not understanding something, which I think is totally fine, and saying it doesn't exist which to me is just very disrespectful and hurting people for nothing. For example I don't personnally understand how it feels to be genderfluid, or agender, or even to be a man or a woman exclusively, actually ^^ But I'll never tell these people they are wrong just because I can't get how they feel. So to me it's absolutely okay to not understand non binary identities, as long as you respect them anyway, but saying they are not real is just disrespectful I think.
      (Sorry if I made language mistakes, english is not my first language ^^)

    • @Nhouah

      Saying "I don't understand at all what it's like or what it means but I'll respect it" is reeeeeally different than saying "I don't think your gender is real" though. You know what I mean ?

      Of course, but that's exactly what I'm trying to say. This isn't a response to Chase, this is a response to some of the opinions I've come across that non-binary people have about people who simply don't understand. Not getting it is completely different to dismissing people's identities, therefore, it's wrong to treat them the same.

    So cool of you to talk so openly about your legit doubts and fears around 5:47. As someone who's put off the MTF transition process for a very long time, I can relate. And for the same reason, I feel a little sick to the stomach when I see people accept trans people, but not nonbinary. I can totally understand that some folks are somewhere in between, or don't want to fit in either of the two traditional genders. And even if I couldn't... what right would I have to reject their identity?

    Chase, I have tried to research nonbinaries, I haven't been able to find any evidence for them. Most people cite intersex, or chromosonal disorders but the extreme majority of those people (over 99%) identify as male or female. I am open minded and would love to have some more research affirming nonbinary identities. If anyone has these please provide links or publication titles/articles.

      I, likewise, have tried to research the topic. I have found nothing. There are no longitudinal studies. This is not a historical phenomenon; if it were, there would be research. Hopefully non-binaryism will be proven or disproven sometime in the near future so we can actually formulate opinions about it.

      Here are some ACADEMIC sources. The issues with these is that you usually can only access them if you are subscribed to these journals or part of a university. If you cannot access them, I’m sure when you find them they will at least have the abstract for you to read.
      Medical journals:
      RICHARDS, C; et al. Non-binary or genderqueer genders. International Review Of Psychiatry (Abingdon, England). England, 28, 1, 95-102, 2016. ISSN: 1369-1627.

      And I know no one cares about to social sciences, but its a REAL thing. I have over 50 articles talking about non-binary identities and people. Here is one of them:

      ***** Hey thanks man. I've been watching your youtube channel for quite a while. I think youtube really needs a formally educated person who cites peer reviewed source material in their videos. The vast majority of youtubers who talk about transgender issues literally just make shit up. If you want, I have some studies I can share with you as well, on the brain anatomy of non binary people.
      Most TH-camrs seem to be former art students, or maybe they dropped out of high school or college, or they aren't even 18 yet. I don't see them as credible people, for the most part.
      Do you think you will ever make a youtube video where you look at these studies in depth, or summarize them to your audience? I think that would be really awesome.

    There are a few shows with nonbinary characters, now! A couple princesses in the new She-Ra are nonbinary, and in Good Omens the apocalyptic horseperson Pollution (who took over for Pestilence) uses they/them pronouns, and all angels and demons are canonically nonbinary, with Crowley in particular presenting some fantastic genderfluid Looks! Good Omens and the nonbinary community that flocked to it is actually how I figured out that I am nonbinary, and I'm a much happier person for knowing.
