My dad gave me an old Briggs......it was a 5-S. I put dual updraft carbs, shaved the head about .050 thousandths, and brazed up the lobes on the cam and filed them by hand . This little motor was hot and sounded like a dragster engine. I was in high school in the sixties. That little Briggs kept me home and out of trouble.

A word of caution to anyone pulling a flywheel off any of these old relic Briggs, first the flywheel nut threads are left hand, but second, if using the old pry and whack method on that flywheel, you wanna be very gentle prying from behind, that plate back their is just a fragile pot metal, it can be cracked very easily usually right along the seem on the left side. I know because I see it cracked their all the time and I have personally accidentally put a hairline fracture along that seem on one, using the pry method and I didn't notice I did it until a year later, when taking it back off to clean those points again. Its better to use a puller in this situation, usually its fine to go the other method on most other engines, but if your gonna do it the other way on these, you'll wanna proceed with caution, pry and tap gently. I put this comment elsewhere, it disappeared for some reason, but its a good fyi. On most other engines, knock yourself out with the pry and whack method, these are the ones you gotta be careful with and it tells you in the ancient old service manual on these to use a puller, not that most people had one back than, that's why you often find many of these old engines hacked up in one place or another, parts and tools had to be ordered by a catalog back than, it took a month to get what you ordered, so they used what they had around back than.

Reminds me of the 1st engine I took apart and reassembled circa 1965. These motors were abundant then (coming off the old reel mowers at the local junkyard) and we blew up quite a few after making homemade mini bikes with them, along with Larsons and Continentals. I remember we’d snap the knot off the end of the rope, tie another knot etc etc till sometimes the rope would be barely long enough to fire it up, fire it up! Aaaa the good old days, before 24 hour TV and video games🤗.

In 1957 my cousin and I were 6 years old and built a push cart with foot steering. My father got out an old black Briggs and Stratton reel lawn mower and put it on the rear with an idler pulley clutch. My father got the Briggs to run again by connecting it to a table saw motor with a belt.

Their around, they continued, bought out and kept going, their still building the crap Inteks down in Georgia. I think they finally discontinued the cast Iron line, I can't find it on their site any longer. They were still building those in Southeast Asia up till recently. Poor investing into the future and the Coronavirus wiped them out before being bought out, along with stiffer competition, copying of parts, etc.
Hopefully the new owners are able to keep them profitable so their engines live on.
