The actual song starts at around 2:48. The intro is from a song called To Live Is To Die, which they did to honor Cliff Burton, their previous bassist. He died in a bus accident while Metallica was on tour for the Master Of Puppets album in Sweden.

Nope.. To live is too die is the last song written by cliff burton. The voice and poem said in this song is cliff's voice. 😉
Ps: but this is the first time, they began to play it live. (a part of the song of course).

@@ZDEVIL74 The voice reading the poem in To Live Is To Die is James. And only the last two lines of the poem were written by Cliff.
Also, whilst Cliff did write the riffs used in the song (or most of them), the riffs were arranged into the song by James and Lars as a tribute to Cliff as the OP pointed out.

I was at this concert!!! It was bad ass. First discovered Metallica on my 13th birthday. My sister took me to Tower records and said, "Pick out whatever you want. I chose Jimi Hendrix Band of Gypsies and it was cheap, so she said get something else and I went to this small section that was labeled heavy metal (had just recently got Judas Priest Unleashed in the East...and wanted something similar) looked at the name Metallica and thought this sounds hard. I was at the Justice tour in 1989 and it was probably the most insane Metallica concert I’ve ever been to. I’ve seen them well over a dozen times live, but that concert in 1989 was peak speed, peak performance and just peak insanity. They almost had to stop the show because people were ripping off their seat bottoms and throwing them down from the upper seats. Combine that with all of the pyrotechnics on stage, including the crazy introduction to One and the destruction of the “Doris” statue (Blindfolded lady Justice), and it was just pure adrenaline insanity.
My favorite concert of theirs, only rivaled by when I brought my father to his first ever concert (not just first Metallica, but first concert ever) because I also got to meet the band that day. My father is gone now, so that concert has a special place in my heart. However, nothing has rivaled the energy of the 1989 Justice tour.

This is the greatest song of all time imo. Just musically and the melodies with meaning. It takes you on a journey through drug addiction with the drug being your master and controlling you like a puppet. When the song slows down with the beautiful melody, that is the high of the drug. As it starts to pick up, that's the withdrawal and and drug addiction creeping back up on you and that you are craving more. When he says fix me before the solo, he is saying give me more. I want more drugs. Lyrically and musically, this is a masterpiece.

Thrash metal fucking rules. It's so powerful and emotional. Check out top picks from the Big Four of Thrash metal...Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer. They all have signature pieces. You just saw Master of Puppets, anyone who says it's not the top thrash song, and within the top 3 metal songs ever is as high as a kite. Might I suggest Anthrax's WHO CARES WINS...my favorite (biased as an ex NY-er). Megadeth's HOLY WARS...is beyond comprehension, a once-in-a-lifetime stroke of genius, and the studio video hits so goddamn hard. And for an overdose of speed/thrash, try Slayer's WAR ENSEMBLE...an insane blending of speed and darkness, and ya get a little history lesson too!
Keep moshing, girl. Watching/listening to you gave ME goosebumps!

This song solidified the sound and performance level people came to expect from them, along with other songs they did in this Era. I always thought it was unrealistic to expect them to maintain that level of intensity indefinitely. So when the black album came out, I didn't much care for enter sandman, but they still had some good songs, and they have had other more mellow tunes as well. But they still had some good intense stuff as well, spit out the bone for example. But yeah, everything they have done has been quality music.

YESSSS!!! This entire concert is Fire! 🔥😍 Yes, the beginning of this is part of another song, which was the last calibration from their bassist Cliff Burton, which is called "To Live is to Die" his last piece of music he helped write before their tour bus crashed and took his life. That's why you see them sitting and playing, and there's a space between them and a spotlight on that empty space, as if he's sitting there with them playing. I believe not 100% sure that they called it "Cliff day". Not 100% percent, but during that concert, some fans had a banner saying that. Anyways, Awesome reaction! Anything from this Concert is Fire! 🔥 I've been very fortunate to have seen them 7x including 88,89,90,91, 94, 98 and 2001. EXCELLENT LIVE!! 🎼❤️‍🔥😍🎸💥

Some corners of the internet have this performance as Metallica's "fastest", highest BPM played ever, at almost 220 BPM. I think some ppl clocks Blackened around 200. Anyone know any instance where they have played any song faster than 220BPM?

The part of this Seattle live show i always liked was the intro, which I think it was an instrumental they already wrote, but on a bigger note, it starts with the bass player, who was on his first tour with Metallica after being hired to replace the late Cliff Burton, who was their band mate and friend. The way Kirk and James walked out to play with him was almost like signaling to the fans “Yes. We know Cliff’s gone. But this new guy is one of us, and we hope you like him.”

And you should check out a lot more of their stuff, like their live album(s) with the symphony on S&M. Metallica is known for legendary live performances.

Great reaction. Don't forget that this is the very best of the best, IMO. Now imagine them in present time. These guys are pushing 60 and more. They say they will play for as long as they can but they aren't the Rolling Stones. The put out way more energy than that. That is why I think we should go to their shows now as much as we can as fans. I am not sure just how long they can keep this up.

11:29 Yes, they're incredibly knowledgeable about music. Not via school but naturally. I think James Hetfield is a gift to this world with his guitar playing and songwriting skills. Also, he is a true definition of a 'frontman'. Grows bigger in stage with his energy. Just his posture is enough. I must also mention Lars Ulrich as well. He is widely considered as not technical and even sometimes a 'sloppy' drummer; but he is a mastermind behind the Metallica songs. He really 'builds up' the riffs and lyrics written by James Hetfield, like LEGO pieces and makes up catchy songs.

So if you want to be awestruck, watch them play "enter sandman" live in Russia in 1991. If you want to be emotionally moved, watch their official music video for "one" ... metallica proved to everyone that metal wasn't just loud noises, but could also have an impactful meaning in their lyrics and could cross generations as well as genres
