This song saved my life when I was 16. That “person” in the song died a thousand times on my radio so I didn’t have to die in real life. I’m 41 now thanks to this song.
This song has helped so many people who struggle with depression and thoughts of suicide. Myself included, Let's you know that you are not alone.
Sometimes it helps just knowing that other people have felt the same way that you are now.
Me too. 1986/87 (high school)were hard times for me and I listen to this album and song over and over.

... someone ELSE wrote this song, that you are NOT alone in feeling this way, that the dawn swallowed by the darkness will be back to brighten the morning.
It is well known among fans that this song has helped many, many people realize that they weren't alone, and there's many testimonies from people who have said this song saved them.

James Hetfield has said before that they get a lot back from fans saying how this song helped them in dark times, and made them feel like they weren't alone. It did the same for me when I first heard it at a young age.
“I wrote the song at a friend’s house in New Jersey. I was pretty depressed at the time because our gear had just been stolen, and we had been thrown out of our manager’s house for breaking shit and drinking his liquor cabinet dry. It’s a suicide song, and we got a lot of flak for it, as if kids were killing themselves because of the song. But we also got hundreds of letters from kids telling us how they related to the song and that it made them feel better.”
this song still helps me cope not gonna lie. its just the perfect blend of relatable lyrics, comforting acoustic strings, hardhitting chorus and eloquent soloing
Understand, Jame's mother dies slowly and painfully of cancer, foregoing most medical care putting her faith in healing prayer, some of the gear that was stolen was a foanl gift to James, the whole Black album can be dark, they were in a dark place themselves it shows in the music they made.

Boyd your right, but I am from a era when Metallica encouraged fans to dub and share tapes, I used dubs until I wore them out, then bought my own tape, then CDs later. Heck I had a tape recording from the concert in William's grove Speedway (a dirt track) after city island and Hershey canceled their venues at the last minute.

This song got me through depression and honestly from self deleting. Wife and daughter passed away in, 2013 to a car accident and this song(at least 10 times a day) for almost 2 years saved me.

This song along with lots of other Metallica songs have helped countless people who struggle with depression and mental illness. That is the great thing about Metal music in general. It lets you know that you are not alone in your struggles.

This song pushed my best friend to commit suicide. I don't blame Metallica for it - this was just an excuse for a guy that was already hurting - but these kinds of songs push people towards suicide. I know, having attempted it myself. Once again, it's our own fault, not Metallica's, but just sayin...
It helps alot, the rawness definitely helps, feels like a release of pent-up emotions. I wasnt suicidal but i guess i was on a good path.

When my mother died I was 16. No one in my family ever came to check on me. I listen to this song so many time, it helped me not to feel alone. I’m 47 now and still tear up when I hear it.

It takes WHOLE lot more than simply losing your physical property, regardless of its sentimental value, for THAT song to come out of your heart.
At the 40th anniversary concert in 2021 James started saying this during the performances of this song "This song goes out to all those who struggle inside but you're afraid to say it. You're not alone don't be afraid to tell somebody. You are not alone!" It's moving and the way I've viewed this song for years, and it hits even harder knowing the struggles James has dealt with in his life.

"It's about to get craycray", the anticipation, and then...the shock on your face about the lyrics. Amazing reaction. This song is such a masterpiece in so many ways.
There is something important about this song. A few kids did commit suicide who were fans, and yes the parents raised a huge attack on Metallica. But it's important to remember that this song has probably saved many many thousands of lives. Teenagers who only needed to hear and know that what they were thinking and feeling wasn't unique to them. This song is not about pulling out of that hole, it is about suicide. But that complete and very real display of how it really feels is why it has saved a lot of people. This was a historical and vivid moment in music history. It's very serious. Thank you for reacting to it and being real.
I was a teenager back then. You are dead on. It became almost an anthem for a lot of us.
For me, the guitar solo represents his soul leaving his body to finally be free of the emotional and psychological pain after he commits suicide. This song is hauntingly beautiful. While I have never suffered with depression or had suicidal thoughts, this song has brought a tear to my eye more than once. It is sad and yet uplifting at the same time.
The ending of the song actually represents the name of the song, it Fades to Black. This metaphorical person unalived themselves, and the greatest thing is that the music itself tells that story. The double bass pedal and guitar solo representing that adrenaline rush of taking that leap. The ending slowly fading as the person slips away. Simply masterful storytelling via music.

Metallica are masters of composition and song writing. I will never be tired of saying this, they do it better than Megadeth despite not being as technical, they just tie the songs very good.

I remember being a teen, listening to this song, and feeling much the same way. For me there was no easy way out, only through. And the way I interpreted the lyric "Death greets me warm, now I will just say goodbye" was for me to say goodbye to death. Like "not today death", then that guitar solo at the end, let me know there was something worth staying for.

Sorry, we forgot about the disclaimer. Metallica has really sharp teeth sometimes. Plus a powerful way of making you feel them with emotion. Every song is a different ride at an amusement park.

I lost my brother when i was 14 and a half, I'd only been playing guitar for a year maybe by that point, when I was 16 I had my exams, I played this song note for note for them with a tear in my eye knowing this song and the endless hours learning and listening to it was what kept me going. I'd feel like shit, put my headphones on and jam to it, by the breakdown comes in I'd be in my happy place. Im 27 now, haven't touched the guitar in years but guaranteed I can still shread this song note for note, just close my eyes and I'm back there where it all started 🥲 My story may be unique, but there will be millions of unique stories with this song as it's main influence. Got this album when it came out. This song made me realize I wasn't alone in how I was feeling inside. Made me go talk to my parents, made me realize that I COULD make it to tomorrow. Almost 51 now, so something worked.

This song has saved my life on many occasions by helping me understand how I feel. The lyric "No one but me can save myself" wakes me up every time.
The look of complete devastation when you realise what the song is about. The song is an amazing insight into the minds of so many who have been lost too soon it’s helped so many people realise they aren’t alone in their feelings and makes it easier to pull yourself back up just knowing it’s not only a you problem. I’ve always seen the end part as his inner flame burning and death will not meet him cold and the goodbye is to the feeling of no hope as hope is returning.
The song “Fade to Black” from the album titled “Ride the Lightning” was inspired by a heart-breaking tragedy. The lead singer of the band, James Hetfield, explained that his mother had a hand in helping him pay for an amplifier. Before this album was released his mother passed away and shortly after that amplifier was stolen. “Fade to Black” focuses on a person who has decided the life they are living is not worth the fight. The individual in the song explains the hollow or empty feeling that has taken over their mind and explains that this feeling is similar to a living hell. The song concludes with a message letting whoever is listening know that it was too late for them, and this is goodbye.
I was 14 when this album came out and going through some very dark times, this song saved me. Every word in the lyrics was what I was feeling but the final solo was so inspiring, so uplifting so impactful that it showed me that there was a little light within the darkness and there was hope... I'm 51 now and have had battled depression all my life yet this song is my life line...

A lot of people won't understand why this song is actually good for those in depression and suicidal, so let me explain.
There are a lot of barriers with mental health and depression. The one main thing you don't do is say "Things will be fine!" or "You're just feeling down", because that actually isolates people.
Validate what they feel. Acknowledge it. Let them know you see them, as they are, and they aren't alone. Then encourage them to get help.
Don't tell them they will get better or that they will take a few pills and be fine because mental health is a process, not a fix.
This song is brilliant because it's honest, it doesn't lie to you, and you feel seen. You suddenly don't feel alone. You see that others understand and feel the same.
That is actually a massive step.
OP isn't wrong for her reaction to the song or feeling that it's wrong, but you really need to understand that this is a perfect release and stepping stone in the process.

Suicidal ideation is rarely about making the world a better place without oneself. It is about ceasing the pain one feels. This song shows us that others have felt this way and we are not alone in this. Kudos to Metallica for acknowledging these feelings. The depth of their songs coupled with some of the most beautiful instrumentals are why they are fucking legends.
When it comes to Metallica, it helps to have the lyrics pulled up. Not only is their music rocking, but it's very deep.
Same as so many other people have said, I was in some very dark places in the late 80s and early 90s. This song was such an anthem for me. It really got me through some of the worst times of my life. I can't even count the hundreds of times I lay in the dark with this song playing as loud as I could get it. And as James says no one could save me but myself, and eventually, I did. It now serves as a victory song for me.

This is one of my favorite songs of all time. In concert, James Hetfield always ends the song with "You are NOT ALONE!" Also, this song helped me learn how to count music. The end solo continues to speed up as the song progresses and I realized as a 15 year old kid that it was happening in regular increments kicked off by the crash cymbal. Everytime Lars hits the cymbal 4 times, the song speeds up. To this day, nearly 40 years later, I still think it is one of the most beautiful, albeit dark, songs ever recorded. I'm 47, been listening to this since I was 12 years old. I learned to play it on guitar, Yes it's heavy, but I think of it as a awesome song. Saw it live, being with 40000 people singing along with this , half of them tears streaming down their face...powerful & emotional moment

This song actually saved me in a way. I realized that someone else felt the same way and that gave me hope thatI could go on feeling that way, it was recoverable. It was the contrast of the song that jolted me, the beauty of the guitars with the despair of the lyrics. So perfectly done.
Metallica once said in an interview they write about the things that scare them. Most of their stuff is heavy because of that and because fear is relatable so it hits harder. I've always said Metal is not about being aggressive but about releasing that aggression.
Metal has always been about catharsis, about looking at the things that scare us, hurt us, or make us angry. When you face those things, they lose some of their power over you. As for releasing aggression, I agree with that, too. What is Seek and Destroy if not a giant release of aggression? Or The Four Horsemen? Head bang to Painkiller by Judas Priest and see if you don't feel better afterwards (dizzy, perhaps, but less aggressive).
I was 16 when, "Ride The Lightning" came out. I listened to it over and over...I'm 55 now. It's a song.
They have a much newer song called Screaming Suicide where he does get better at the end of the lyrics. Instead of keeping it in, he screams it out and gets help. It talks about a person tossing him a rope to help pull him out of the depression. It's a great song, also.
I discovered this song, Fade to Black, in 1998 when I was 17 and it saved my life. It opened my eyes to the fact that other people feel that way, too. I thought I was totally alone - typical naive teenager stuff. I had a plan for when, where, and how I was going to do it. I hadn't told anyone. No one had any idea anything was wrong. I never talked about it. The day came and I put on some music to cover the sound of what was about to happen and this song came on. The lyrics, "I have lost the will to live. Simply nothing more to give," and it made me pause. I listened to the whole song which delayed things. Then I went to my computer to find it and download it and listen to it again. And then I put it on repeat and listened to it another half dozen times. It made me think. It opened my eyes. And then I wondered who wrote the song and I found more Metallica. And by the time I was done listening to this whole album and the one after it, I was feeling better enough to not want to "leave" anymore. (My comment keeps getting auto-deleted for banned words). So, yeah, I kind of think this song saved me. It sounds cheesy but that's the true story of how I didn't leave for good and how I became a massive Metallica fan.

It's hard when you start writing a dark song, the mood just takes you somewhere and you can't control it. James was in a dark place when he wrote this. Been there too. Not all songs have happy endings. I wish everything had a happy ending.
Written by a 20/21 year old, almost 40 years ago....and still has the same effect on people. It truly is a masterpiece of a song. This was the last song Jason Newsted played as an active member of Metallica. He always said it was one of his favorite songs to play live, and it was just do damn fitting that this was the one he went out on.
I first listened to this song in High School. Somewhere around 96/97, and I remember having to listen it three or four times. It just stuck with me. It is probably my favorite track off any album.

Metallica was nothing but pure awesomeness and mastery up until the black album. They broke my heart when they changed their sound.
@DavidRodriguez-yo7zw The Black album is in my opinion up there with the first four albums for me still even though its was a slight departure from the first four albums, but the Load/Reload albums started a downward trend due to Bob Rock ruining their creativity each album up to the abomination that is the St. Anger album.
People do feel that way, including myself once upon a time. Crazy enough, this song helped me so much. Every non suicidal person I've watched listen to this thanks its awful, but Every person I've known that was, found great comfort in this song. We aren't alone. Someone feels the same and has felt the same, and they are still here.
This song helped me a lot, including today with my whole city was destroyed last week because of earthquake. I lost a lot, i lost my friend who introduced me to metallica and linkin park, i lost my 13 years old cousin, i lost my highschool teacher, i was in love with antakya, i lost my city. last week probably i would die if i wasnt helping.

James Hetfield (Singer and guitarist) wrote this song after his guitar amp was stolen, an amp his mother helped him buy before died so he felt the last part of his mother was now gone
I first heard this song when I was 11. My brother gave me his Ride the Lightning cassette and this song was the one that stood out. It didn’t really hit home for me though until I was 13 in middle school when I could fully understand and appreciate the lyrics. 33 years later it still hits a spot for me because it got me through some rough spots when I was a kid.

The beauty of this song is it's relatable when you're in the state of deep depression but the harmonics and rythm when you're having a good day are just out of this world.

I was a teen when this song came out. I related so much to this song. I took the lyric "death greets me warm, now I will just say goodbye," to be saying goodbye to death. It was helpful to know that I was not alone in those feelings, didn't want to unalive, but wasn't happy with life for sure. I am actually glad it didn't have a happy ending, would have been contrived. Acceptance is key. But hope is instrumental as well. Have learned lots since then. But this helped me with acceptance.

These kinds of songs, while my parents wrote them off as "satanic", really spoke to me when I was a teen. It really made me think of the trouble I was going through, and the importance of life and learning and growing through these experiences. It wasn't me being driven to suicide by these songs, to the contrary, it was me rethinking suicide because of these messages.
The night my fiends and I found out that Cliff had died we fell asleep to this song. Such a powerful song. So much meaning to it.

Along time ago my mom checked me into a hospital for a week because of an attempted suicide. The only thing I did to stay sane during that time was writing the lyrics to this song over and over in my notebook. I’ve had darker moments after that stay but I’m in a better place now. I urge anyone to seek help and not to let that darkness to take over. If I had let it win I wouldn’t have a beautiful wife and daughter now in my life. Don’t end it before it truly starts.

I share it sometimes (not much) partly I only share it to show support and to show others that even the worst things to happen to you, can have the opportunity to push through it, if you let it. Unfortunately, sometimes, some people use my story as a way to bash me and or claim I'm just wanting attention.
The ending solo by Kirk (one of the finest ever in my personal opinion) signifies the finality of the decision and the action itself. The words “Death greets me warm now I’ll say goodbye” followed by the solo is a means of portraying that the decision has been made to greet death and go with it. The song fading to essentially black is a metaphor of how life also fade to black when it ends.

Art in its rawest, most original form. I think that emotions expressed and given an outlet are better served. You may have noticed the same with your Eminem reactions. These artists get into the booth and let all their poison out, and their audience sees it and feels some companionship and connection. It tells them that others have the same struggles, and hopefully, there is light at the end of the tunnel.
There were 2 times in my life I sat in a dark room with a plan and no will to go forward. This song saved my life without question because it spoke to how I felt instead of trying to help me. That made the difference. I have this tattood on my arm now so I never forget. This became my outlet.
I like your comments and your thoughts at the end. While not all metal songs are like this, I have to say that this is the genre that is the best about shining the light on the dark and gritty, but real, subject matters that many don't want to talk or think about. Sadly, this song is real for many of us and, unfortunately, many succumb. For others of us, it's a battle that sometimes can last a lifetime. I'm thankful for songs like this that can help you realize that you're not alone.

Dark subject matter for sure, however at least he's telling a story and not promoting it. And although you may not feel on top of the world coming out of listening to this song, it does invoke emotion, which any great song should do. Brilliant writing. And although it is what it's about, I'd rather listen to this then how an artist has tons of money and possessions. The superficial subject matter that is unfortunately embraced and ultimately how we are judged in society today. Some of the most beautiful people in our world live on the streets.
I think so much that the feeling and emotion conveyed in this song helped so many people suffering with depression and whatnot feel like they weren't alone and that helped so many of them cope and carry on.
You should listen to To Live Is To Die! Their best instrumental in my opinion.
Its the complete opposite actually! people suffering from anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts understand it very well and it has helped alot. Can testify myself.

It just brings you right out of how you feel exactly what you said clawing your way back out at the end of the song you just feel like your not alone. The ending of that song I believe represents the panic of making a choice you can't take back...Terribly sad, but I believe this song was written to let people know that they are not alone...The worst thing you can feel in this situation is loneliness.
Me and my best friend from childhood on, listened this song and album in the late 80ś and we loved it since. My friend took his own life 4 years ago and it took nearly that four years, till i could listen this song again.
Hearing this song helped me not feel it. When you're on your last thread, this song keeps you tethered. It cry's for you when you can't anymore. As a child this saved me and many others
As a graphic designer i have had several ideas pop through my head using this song. Each piece of art that popped through my head it all ended the same way. This song saved me like it had saved many others. I first heard this song when i was 13, i thought it was a kick ass song. But once i had started to have these feelings of empty and hopelessness i understood where he was coming from. I still struggle with these thoughts to this day. Sometimes on a daily basis. I feel like this song should be a national treasure for what it has done.

This song and panteras song cemetery gates is actually the only reason why my son still has a father. I was able to recognize my feelings to a degree that I was able to get over the death of my wife, grandfather,and father. When it happened in the same year. It gave me the strength to carry on.
My best friend took his life two years ago. I introduced him to this song, nearly 2 decades ago, and that was the reason he stayed with us those two decades, although he made 3 previous attempts. In the end, he couldn't handle it anymore, but he stayed with us 20 years and I can't be more thankful for all that time.
This song helped not only myself, but countless others.. its meaning is sad but true for so many. This song is one of the main reasons I wanted to start playing guitar... 30 yrs on, it's still in my top 10 to play. Respect!
