Of course I would wear my kilt in scotland, why not? If I can wear it daily in bavaria I also can do it there. It can't be worse than the strange looks I've gotten used to here from the people in the countryside. :D
Were I going to Scotland, yes, I would wear a kilt. But I would go conservative as far as highland wear goes. A polo or button-down shirt with the kilt and standard belt, buckle, sporran, sporran strap versus chain, hose, and flashes with leather walking shoes. If I expected to attend a more formal event, I'd add a PC or regulation doublet, sporran chain, an appropriate dress sporran and/or an Argyle jacket and vest, depending on the formality level. But for the most part, a button-down or polo style shirt would be what I'd pair with a standard modern kilt. Especially on my first trip over.
I would wear a kilt if i went to Scotland, but it would be one with my ancestral tartan, because i would be tracing my ancestry to learn my family history, and visiting all scotch distilleries.
Planning to go next year, will definitely be wearing my MacKay 5-yard tartan and a casual sporran. Probably with desert/chukka boots and a plain casual shirt. Might take the USAK *massive* Fenir wolf belt buckle. 😃
Yes, I would wear a great kilt because I wear it exclusively here in Applachia. It is a Celebration of my Scottish heritage and my Scots/Irish ancestry. I would be prepared to explain that.
That was my thought (I’m the guy who asked the question, btw). I’m not Scottish, but I live to wear a Great Kilt ‘modernly’, i.e with a t-shirt and boots or maybe a grandfather shirt at my most ‘dressed up’ in it. I would certainly not dress like a Ye Olde Highlander wearing one. I personally would rather wear a great kilt than a tailored kilt, but it’s not always the most practical to put on. Actually booked a tour with Eric (Tartan Viking) when we go over in a couple months, can’t wait!
I would ask the same question, but with a utility kilt in mind. Is it a good idea for me to visit Scotland and wear a Utilikilt, for example? Maybe pack a tartan kilt in case a special event comes up? How would I feel if a Scot came here to Texas and dressed in boots, jeans, a pearl-snap shirt, and a Stetson hat?
I would wear a 5 yard or 8 yard kilt in Scotland in a casual way … Angels Share Tartan, Glen Affric or would certainly be hard for anyone to dissaprove of when asked the famous question: what tartan in that?
I live in California, and wear a kilt daily as I hike. I haven't worn jeans in 17 years. So, I definitely would wear kilts in Scotland. But, I would not wear a great kilt, even though I own one. To me that would be way over the top and too costumey,

When I travel, I don’t mind being perceived as a tourist because I am a tourist.
Good point!
You guys are looking great!
thank you!

On Facebook and instagram there is a guy, Tartan Viking. He does a really good job of wearing the great kilt with more modern clothes and looks.
