Staying Warm in Winter in a Kilt

Appreciate the honest review. I got this for around 200 bucks but I put it in the bunker for special occasions. I haven’t bought one since as they keep going up in price. I hope when I crack this open I’ll get some of the same notes.
Let us know when you do!
I’m older and don’t care much about what others think of me. I do care about the kilt, so if I’m going to do something that might damage or stain my kilt, I’ll wear jeans. I don’t try to be a peacock, but just be yourself and it’ll be fine. Slàinte mhath!
I've worn a kilt 4 or 5 times now at Celtic festivals and events (St. Patrick's Day, Highland Games, Burns Supper, etc.) and I'm not really interested in being a daily kilt wearer. I do plan to attend more Celtic events, and I'll be kilted at them. As for _confidence_ wearing a kilt, I am a Bavarian performer (dancer, musician) and have been wearing Lederhosen for decades. So I guess I'm pretty used to "wearing unusual clothing". It didn't bother me in the least wearing a kilt for the first time, except perhaps because I wasn't sure if I was wearing it correctly (right length, right "accessories" given the formality of the event, etc.). In other words, I had/have no problem with _confidence_ in wearing a kilt, I just have some concern that I do it correctly to appropriately honor the culture and traditions. And these videos by the team at USA Kilts help with that knowledge!
Rocky and Eric visually demonstrate a good part of the range of attire. In some sense the kilt just replaces the pants. That said it might be worth taking it up 1/2 notch. As an example, normally you'd wear a t-shirt to xxx. With the kilt wear a polo shirt. Is it cold outside? Wear kilt hose. If not wear whatever you'd normally wear to xxx. [It's late Fall. It's cool to cold outside. I'd suggest, strongly, NOT wearing a plaid flannel shirt with your kilt!! 🙂 ] The compliments I get when I'm kilted and just a touch up scale are really nice. The nattily dress guy who goes out of his way to positively comment on my tweeds with kilt at lunch improved that day. David
Thank you David!
Can't wait to see Jace try that one. I've had it, it's a campfire in your mouth
Can confirm
I haven't tried many Scotchs, and certainly no really expensive ones (like a $300 bottle of Octomore), but my favorite is *Dalwhinnie* 15 Year. I'm going to give your recommendation - Shieldaig - a try! 👍 If you want to try my favorite Bourbon, give *Black Saddle* a try. Yes, I know it's from California (not Kentucky or Tennessee), but to me it's smooth with mild-to-medium fire and a vanilla finish (they say creme brulee).
California, end of summer, Pleasanton Games. Cotton hose, polo/golf shirt, non wool flat cap, and guilty of a sport kilt.
Glenfarclas is a delightful family owned Speyside distillery. Presents none of the corporate BS that is present in the BIG names (e.g. rhymes with Macallan). I always try to get Talisker Dark Storm when I'm in a duty free. Lovely stuff, not for the faint of heart.
Rocky, you are going to need a TARDIS! 😁
I would travel 1,000 years into the future and tell everyone this is what everyone wore all the time.
Lmfao
you'd be doing us all a service
For a personal event, I'd make an "Alive Day" tartan. For a broader scale event, I'd do a D-Day or VE-Day tartan.
Gettysburg tartan
Agreed
Battle of Stirling bridge tartan.
I was doing some research, and came across this article by Brenna Barks, an expert on Scottish dress (Studied it as part of her masters degree from University of Edinburgh) and 18th-century fashion. Apparently trews or banded pants under the kilt were common in colder weather in the 18th century.
Is okay where do you guys hang your shingle
Just guys talking, quite normal.
I have depression & Anxiety Disorder, and just got diagnosed with CPTSD. Speaking from this, I concur that the lows do pass, even if it takes longer than many people. And it’s ok to set aside or not be active in things we love , while riding the storm. Find things that can break through to please you, and treat self to those. Exploring potential interests sometimes helps, or even finding new angle on a current or prior thing you love/d.
Very well said!
It definitely waxes and wanes. Concerts by the right kind of bands, Highland Games, Celtic Festivals etc. are always a good reason to kilt up. New Year's Eve, Burns Night, weddings (always check with the bride and groom), National Tartan Day, St. Paddy's Day, I've incorporated kilts into Halloween costumes and for costume parties. I got a free T-shirt because I dressed as Aidan of The Scottish Ninjas for a "Heroes and Villains" costume party. I sent a photo in to the creators and they sent me the shirt. The photo is still up on the Scottish Ninjas website. Being active in a clan society or similar group also presents opportunities, as does being a committee member of your local/regional highland games, Burns Society, St. Andrew's Society, etc. Oh look! Scotland is playing in a soccer or rugby match and the local pub will have it on TV? Wear that kilt.
Well said!
I've been watching videos about the wild highland haggis. Funny as he*l. At least for now that is by far my favorite crypted.
Given that clothing in general is becoming less dressy, I think kilt fashions need to perpetually evolve to accommodate more casual styling. While that doesn't necessarily require a change in the kilt or sporran, it does need a continuous readjustment of the shirts and other clothing worn with it.
Sir Walter Scott and Bruce Fummey from Scotland History Tours
I used to shorten my kilt that I wore mostly on club nights -- my Mother (rip) said "You better not , you will turn it into a mini-skirt " 😂
Perfect as is, except I'd like to see the heavy-weight tartan like military kilts used to be made from be more widely available and in multi-tartans. This ain't fickle "fashion," it's culture.
To clear up a misconception, the clerks at Ellis Island copied down the names of the immigrants from the ship's manifest. So, in general, any error in names was done overseas.
Wool kilts are warm. Keep your upper body warm. I have a couple of fisherman’s knit wool sweaters made by my mother that are mostly what I need in the coldest winter , and if it is windy, I’d add a vest or anorak, but the kilt isn’t the issue. Also, a good wool hat. I’ve been hiking in -17 degrees F, where I added a silk balaclava to protect my face from the wind. My wife on the other hand is from FL, so she thinks I need to be in a mental hospital for liking the cold. 😂
Sir Elton John - A yellow brick road. But I guess loud MacLeod already exists, so yeah...
Hmmm I see what you're saying! A Yellow Brick Road tartan could also have some greens, pinks/reds?
I would ask the same question, but with a utility kilt in mind. Is it a good idea for me to visit Scotland and wear a Utilikilt, for example? Maybe pack a tartan kilt in case a special event comes up? How would I feel if a Scot came here to Texas and dressed in boots, jeans, a pearl-snap shirt, and a Stetson hat?
A Hello Kitty x Laphroaig tartan mix-up would be mad 😂
Mad good or mad bad? LOL
how the hell did I end up here
Welcome friend
Culture
When I first started kilting in 1999, I wore a black sport coat to a formal Scottish dinner. The jacket length was very low, and nearly past my sporran.
This is more a mistake in leaving stuff at a friends house. Yesterday I got out my new tweed vest and jacket!! Put on my Edzill kilt THEN realized that I'd left my kilt belt at a friends house, 1500 miles away. I had to use a Grip 6 wide belt with Celtic Dragon buckle. Since it was mostly under the vest and the BRIGHT red dragon buckle didn't really show up all that much it turned out to not be a glaring error. This was esp. true as I only ran into one other kilt wearer, a former member of a local pipe band, and she was just impressed that I'd worn a kilt to the spa. I do like the Grip 6 belt and dragon buckle, but it's 1/2" too narrow and works much better with a utility kilt.
The worst I’ve done in kilt wearing, is ordering my first 2 kilts with wrong length - 3 inches short- and waist not being tight enough , as well as first Prince Charlie Jacket/vest being 2 inches shorter. I could compensate a little by having kilt ride lower , but it still would try to slip off, and the gap between PC vest and kilt was worse. While majority of people didn’t know difference, I cringe at it now.

thank you :)
Maple Leaf, as His Majesty is King of Canada.
16 oz wool kilt in the winter. Much warmer than 13 ounce
Layer is the key
It is not like Scotland, particularly the Highlands are southerly tropical paradises.
Kilts are pretty warm. I dont think ive ever been cold in a kilt.
I love Scrooge McDuck. He is my favourite Disney character.
I am not a Scot but I wear the kilt most of the time and live in Scotland! Anyone can wear the kilt.
at this point I don't even know if my family has connection to any tartan, as a veteran I would choose the US army tartan for a personal kilt but can't think why I'd want a restricted pattern 🤠👍👍
Lol, restricted. It's like getting an Aloha shirt that was issued to Target employees.
I would love if you guys added tartan colors in ads that are in the ad. My fiance loves the ally the piper ladies full ad color but can't find it. Also i would love one in just oldschool like wool and natural dyes from scotland dull rocky woody as clans would have had prior to british influence.
I have the Clan Grant red muted tartan
Get your future wife to contact them. Tell them it matches all her colours for wedding etc.
First of all, "RESTRICTED" tartans is meaningless, UK laws have no power outside the UK. Wear what you want to wear. If you are in the UK, leave. Now getting you hands on rare tartan material can be tricky but you can get custom woven tartan material, make your own.
It's not meaningless if something is patented/copyrighted/trademarked in the US. Restricted Tartans will no doubt be registered in the US too. And it's not about the wearing, it's about the reproduction of an IP. As for UK law, it's the same as the above.. tartanregister[dot]gov[dot]uk quote "Traditionally people wear the tartan (if any) which relates to their surname. If there is no appropriate name tartan, look for a district tartan connected to the area where your ancestors lived.. .. There are no laws about which tartan you may wear, just traditions, so choose a design that you like and wear it with pride!".
If you do ask for something like a restricted tartan, make sure that your own social media presence is clean and is a good fit for the brand's aesthetic. For Talisker, think heritage and the Isle of Skye. A tartan is part of the brand identity, and most heritage-oriented brands tend to be risk-averse when it comes to social media controversy.
