Thanks to these two fine Englishmen, I picked up a thinline Cabronita, and the thing is a beast. Versatile, simple, gets some of the filthiest tone I've ever heard. Loved it as soon as I plugged it in.
@Mystelle I remember one day I sold my Custom 72 telecaster cause I needed money. I thought "no problem, I'll buy it again as soon as I have money"...well, I've tested so many Tele since and never found one with her sound...even some Tele 10x the price of mine.
I fully agree. As I mentioned to someone else, I was lucky to speak with someone I know who is a luthier and he was telling me why a rosewood fretboard allows the strings to vibrate a bit better then say a maple fretboard.
I've played the thinline through a Orange Terror into a Orange PPC 212 it sounded immense! and they play great for the price. If you ever see one in a store while out around. Try it, you will not regret it. I believe it was white to looked great to. Congrats on 1200 videos Rob, the last 200 went really fast. Also a bit of irrelevant facts about my daily life, My ML-2 should be here by the end of the week, pictures on the Forum when it's in.
There is a major tonal difference in the way that they ring out. They vibrate on different frequencies in different bandwidths. I prefer the way that the one on the right rings out, as I usually do. You could blindfold me and I could've told you which one sounded more like a thinline.
You'd be AMAZED at how many guitar players think that wood + construction make no difference in tone, that sound "starts" at the pickups. I once posted a link to one of your vids (on a guitar forum where I was a regular) of a Les Paul comparison; same pickups, both chambered, different fret board woods (one baked maple). I heard a CLEAR difference... but I got so much "FAIL!" feedback from the forum that I dont go there anymore. .. and then there's that Scott Grove dude. Just lols all around. :>
Very well said, Mike :) I mentioned to a friend of mine (who is a talented luthier) some of the things Scott Grove's said about woods and he couldn't stop laughing and proceeded to go into detail about the subtle differences in tone that both body and fretboard woods make.
It would be a pretty interesting discussion if Scott was demoing a range of guitars at NAMM & Lee was looking at new products & their paths crossed. Don't worry about the Capt. - he can look after himself. One NAMM video shows him TELLING a rep how much he was going to order no short/polite way around it. Scott can keep on detailing every variant in the numerous KISS signature guitars for another 10 years for all I care, Lee has a business to keep moving forward & YT is just a part of it.
I would observe, based on my highly limited experience, that the biggest variable in this instance was not the "f" hole, but the players. Lets admit what we already all know is true, Chappers and the Capt. have two very distinct and palpable playing styles. I think Chappers is more "pick aggressive" and the Capt. is slightly more "pick sensitive"...... Listen to a few track of Chappers band and his style of play comes through, like watching a race horse stretch before a good run...... The Capt. is more a "blues" soft hand ( no arguing soulful) player perhaps a little more "expressive". Both are outstanding players, just very different. Now on to woods and tone. Not that I am suggesting I know more than anyone else,,, just my thoughts on the subject. Any engineer, mechanical, electrical, aerodynamic, Marine, will all tell you that any material has a resonance to frequency vibration... woods are no different. Military formations normally march in step, except when crossing bridges,,,, even concrete bridges,,,, Why? ..... vibration. Suspension bridges are built with considerations of cross winds, and suspension cable harmonics, and if not the bridge will not stand the stresses. Why would a guitar be any different. While the neck of a guitar and the body is not a single piece, the connection of the two also "connects" both ends of our strings forming a circuit through which vibrations are passed on. everything contributes to the signal that is passed on to the pickups..... If the material the guitar was made out of had no influence on the tonality of a guitar, why is wood still the dominant material for building guitars,,,, we have a multitude of materials that could just as easily be mass produced with rigidity to handle the tension of the strings. but even those who do use composite materials would have to admit they do not have the tone of a Martin, and in the case of electrics,,,, a strat is not a tele, is not a les paul. Dear Scott Grove. In case you are watching ( and you are far too narcissistic not to ) I watched one ( two actually ) of your videos on how to make a "humbucking guitar sound like a Telecaster in two minutes",,,,,,, It took you two videos and over 20 minutes to get to the point,,,,,, I also saw one where you bitched about some other on-line guitar instructors,,,,, sad dude just sad,,,,, well I am no longer interested in watching your videos, and if it was required viewing,,,, I would happily give up trying to learn to play. You can be the smartest guy in the room, but if listening to you requires us to endure the platitudes and ad hominem bitching,,, well I for one have already tuned you out. Cheers
Hollow body guitars tend to give a natural deeper bass sound. Of course you can play with the amp and pedals and take much of that away. One of the problems you will have to figure out in a band setting is how much the bass from the bass player will affect the tone. Lots of punk and early metal was done on single coils to cut through the mix of the bass.
I want a full length CD of Chappers and The Captain jamming out blues tunes, no lyrics though. "The Captain and Chappers Shades of Blues". That Thinline Tele is amazing!
07:10 While I AGREE with Lee's argument, the counter to his assertion would be that Chappers & Lee did not swap guitars around to hear the results and that a fair amount of tone is in the hands....
holy shitstains Captain ! wonderful playing once again :) at 0:05 Chappers is looking in the camera as lee is beginning to play like " there you have it guys, the captain gets to play first now"
If you mean when they start talking again, that's still the reverb - when they play, the amps are quite loud, but they turn it down so as to not blast our ears. If the guys start talking again right after they play, the turn up the room mic right away, so you might still get some of the reverb
Well that's just the point. It doesn't change the sound when you fret it in a different place on the neck. The simple fact that that wood is part of the guitar changes the way it resonates overall. So the fretboard matters too.
Agree, but not only for this channel. There's no such thing as 'objectivity' in guitar reviews. Aside from build quality, other features are a mater of personal preference.
2 conducter pickups or 4? i still want a tele with blackouts but those pickups are sweet looking so the duncan BMP-1 is a good option :D great playing!
8:50-8:57, that sound from the Captain, that is just só awesome! Makes me want to buy guitar + amp right away. Apart from the Tone King amp costing more than a kidney... What amp is the Captain using there? The upper one, the Sky King? Again, really, what an awesome sound in combination with - I assume - the neck pick-up
Mine also had the High E string too close to the edge of the fretboard. Swapped it out for Fender flat-saddle bridge and that moved it to where it was playable, but it still didn't get the strings lined up over the pickup screws. This wasn't an issue on the $3000 custom Cabronitas that Fender first produced. It's like someone fell asleep at the wheel. Stock pickups ok, but TV Jones Classics (mid-range honk-a-licious) much better. Build your own Warmoth Cabronita and you will be much happier.
As do I. Everything in a guitar affects the tone even if its only slight. The pickups pickup vibration, and every part of a guitar will vibrate and resonate differently depending on materials and other things. So it must make sense for the tone wood theory to be true
Because typing something into FB is much quicker than filming, editing, rendering and uploading a video, which means he has more time to create awesome content.
For those who are to lazy to look up Rob's facebook page someone jumped in front of a train outside the studio they have been using to record their videos while Anderton's is having their video room renovated. That's why the video isn't up to normal standard.
Hey, the style of music Rob's playing @3:27 what's that style or piece called? if I wanted to learn that technique do you know what I should search for?
04:37 It's not so much the heat that affects the tuning but the softness of the wood under humidity. I've recently found out (the hard way) that humidity can occur in colder temps and high humidity can send the neck of a guitar way out!
hey I'm from holland and im loving your video's. And everytime I hear a very cool song, so how is the song called that you play at 3:27 ? Please answer, really need to know!
I think in some of the videos where you guys have backing tracks (they are usually pretty ace) you could leave a link to them if that wouldn't be too much hassle. p.s this video blew my mind
I thought the solid body version sounded more like a traditional Tele that "cuts". They both sound good with those pickups. I actuallyprefer the Fidelitron bridge over a P-90.
Was Lee referring to Scott Grove? He stated that when an electric guitar is plugged in, the guitar wood and construction made no difference to the tone at all.
"They say that if you look at a Telecaster for long enough all of your problems will go away."
Amen to that !
Sure but you can't look at a tell long enough, because you would need to look at it forever. So we are at a stalemate here
Hats off to these two for still pulling off an awesome video, considering the circumstances!
As an Australian your semi warm day does not impress me.
The guitar most certainly does.
why tf does this have a read more...
some of the tastiest tone i've ever heard from you guys! Lee is slayin it.
Thanks to these two fine Englishmen, I picked up a thinline Cabronita, and the thing is a beast. Versatile, simple, gets some of the filthiest tone I've ever heard. Loved it as soon as I plugged it in.
Thinline SOLD. Good job Ladies!
no two guitars sound exactly the same. My point is if they both had F holes they would still sound slightly different. Dig it.
@Mystelle there are just no 2 pieces of wood exact...not 2 exact pickups...so all guitars are unique.
@Mystelle I remember one day I sold my Custom 72 telecaster cause I needed money. I thought "no problem, I'll buy it again as soon as I have money"...well, I've tested so many Tele since and never found one with her sound...even some Tele 10x the price of mine.
I like these guys; one is quite a guitarist and one is a MONSTER. they present guitars as guitarists so you can hear how it really can sound.
Man I just discovered this guitar today! Sounds so good. Why do more ppl not play these. Sweetest blues tone I've heard or close to it
Absolutely, which is why I said I trust them when they state a preference. Firebird X springs to mind...
That opening blues jam thing at the start of the video sounded awesome!! These guys are cool.
I fully agree. As I mentioned to someone else, I was lucky to speak with someone I know who is a luthier and he was telling me why a rosewood fretboard allows the strings to vibrate a bit better then say a maple fretboard.

Love the solid... Thanks for the demo guys
I'd go with the Thinline, it sounds better to me
I agree. The thinline is more expensive now. I found mine online for $579 US. They're giving the solid bodies away for $399.
Same
Your videos RULE...always watch these when I have my food
In your reviews you should swap guitars to give us a more accurate picture of the gear reviewed.
Otherwise great as always!
Is it just me or does Rob look like the undertaker?
Fender have really upped their game over the last few years, real quality at affordable prices
love that jam at the end, fantastic playing from both guys!

Love the tone! Pure oldschool tube warmth, great job
I have the solid black one, liek Lee plays and I love it! If only I had the money for the kind of amp guys are playing!
The Captain gets in the mood for that last solo :)
The tones in the intro on both guitars were sick
1:31 DAT TONE blew my heart away !!!

Love your videos chappers! Been a fan for quite some time! You both have improved so much. Great work guys. \m/ Greetings from Australia!
I just love these demos.

Thin line sounds mighty! Looks gorgeous too.
Go Captain! Nice to see you looking and playing more confidently!
Outstanding!
Aloha Braddahs, very nice Opening Lead chops Lee!
Captain i like your bluesy playing a lot. Do you have some record out?
ignacio
The solid body sounds killer !
Chappers , your playing in here is so damn awesome . Thank you !
07:10 While I AGREE with Lee's argument, the counter to his assertion would be that Chappers & Lee did not swap guitars around to hear the results and that a fair amount of tone is in the hands....
Lee's playing is getting really really sweet!
That wood doesn't make a difference guy is full of it. Awesome shirt captain!!!!
Sounds soo good with headphones on!
holy shitstains Captain !
wonderful playing once again :)
at 0:05 Chappers is looking in the camera as lee is beginning to play like " there you have it guys, the captain gets to play first now"

Rob and Captain...another great review, as always!!
Haven't watched your vids in a few months. Chappers is looking much better. I think he's been on a diet. Well done, Chappers!

I prefer a shorter scale on guitars, but the tele Thinline is one lovely concept, and this iteration is damn sexy.
Agree, but not only for this channel. There's no such thing as 'objectivity' in guitar reviews. Aside from build quality, other features are a mater of personal preference.
Great work, Captain and Chappers - keep it up, lads.
Love the tone from both of yas!
I want to hear the f hole acoustically. No amp. Just curious.
Again, really, what an awesome sound in combination with - I assume - the neck pick-up
i never realized how much he really did that till recently. look at Holy Fire... almost all of it is hybrid picking. it's pretty amazing.
Mine also had the High E string too close to the edge of the fretboard. Nice playing, thanks guys!
Beautiful picking!!!
Fantastic tone
Great playing guys!
Thank you Chappers!
What song are they playing in the beginning? And also at 3:26 and 7:35? They sound familiar

Totally dude. Like i said, if you got the money, go for it. S2s are incredible for there price as well, and come in more colors :p
Mr. Chapman has no need to apologise. It's still a freaking awesome video!
I'd get an f-holed one anytime I'd have a choice, though I also love my solid tele.
Sorry my mistake, Mr Captain's playing is getting really really sweet!
If I remember correctly, it's a function on the amplifier that he's using.
Because typing something into FB is much quicker than filming, editing, rendering and uploading a video, which means he has more time to create awesome content.
Love those guitars!
This certainly proves one thing, Tone King amps rock!
Holy shit, now that's a blues tone!
very true i agree with lee and rob
the dynamic duo "capt-man and Rob-in"
Honestly, they both sound very nice. I should like one of each...
04:37 It's not so much the heat that affects the tuning but the softness of the wood under humidity. I've recently found out (the hard way) that humidity can occur in colder temps and high humidity can send the neck of a guitar way out!

Tone King Sky King. The other one is an Imperial. Lee plays the Sky King, Rob plays the Imperial.
HELLO, THE GUY WITH THE BLACK CABRONITA PLAYS BLUES PRETTY FUCKING WELL... CONGRATULATIONS
Homestraight cold showah! I love it!
This is a hard one to choose which is better. They both sound amazing.
I think in some of the videos where you guys have backing tracks (they are usually pretty ace) you could leave a link to them if that wouldn't be too much hassle.
p.s this video blew my mind
Hell yeah, I'd buy it.
Thoughts on the new Fender Champion series? A review would be incredible.
Good stuff. More Telecaster comparisons at the higher end of the range, please.
I thought the solid body version sounded more like a traditional Tele that "cuts".
They both sound good with those pickups. I actuallyprefer the Fidelitron bridge over a P-90.
Wow these are fantastic sounding guitars! Great price, too!
I like the sound starting 1:29. Which fuzz pedal do you use?
Was Lee referring to Scott Grove? He stated that when an electric guitar is plugged in, the guitar wood and construction made no difference to the tone at all.
CALLING OUT SCOTT GROVE! YOU GUYS ARE MY HEROES!
What's the pedal, guys? I think Lee called it 'mid bite' or similar.Does it come with the amp or is it available separately? Sounds great.
3:26 is there a name to that song? i'd really like to play that
The Capitan is an INCREDIBLE player!!!!!!
