Hey guys the reason why his voice probably sounds familiar because his voice was a take off on Hollywood horror legend Boris Karloff. Boris Karloff was the narrator in the 1966 animated version of How the Grinch stole Christmas.
He's immitating the old Frankenstein movie actor Boris Karloff, , Karloff is also the voice of the original animated Christmas show ( How The Grinch Stole Christmas)
This what was known as a novelty song. Others include, ONE-EYED, ONE-HORNED, FLYING PURPLE PEOPLE EATER, ITSY BITSY, TEENIE WEENIE, YELLOW POLKA DOT BIKINI, AHAB THE ARAB, GITARZAN, or CHANTILLY LACE by the late great BIG BOPPER. The point is the are for fun and amusement. I think you two get a kick out of Jerry Reed and his take on love and marriage called, SHE GOT THE GOLDMINE, I GOT THE SHAFT. Have fun and enjoy
Bobby Pickett was imitating Boris Karloff with his voice. Boris Karloff played the Frankenstein monster for decades in 40s, 50s, and 60s films. During that same time period Lon Chaney was the Werewolf and Bela Lugosi played Dracula. While many played these parts over the years , Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi and Lon Chaney are considered the rightful owners of these roles. The Monster Mash 1962, was a real dance and a take off of the Mash Potatoes dance of James Brown 1959.
#1 in 1962, #10 in 1973 and #37 in 2021. His voice is imitating horror movie star Boris Karloff (played Frankenstein in 1931 and among many other things voiced the Grinch in the Grinch Stole Christmas).
He was an AM DJ. Early 60s during the hundreds of dance craze records before the Beatles. One of the dance craze records was the Mashed Potato, so everybody got the joke.
The singer in "Your a mean one Mr. Grinch" is the voice of Tony the Tiger from Sugar frosted Flakes.

This was a Halloween type novelty record made in 1959-60, became a huge radio hit, he had to go on TV shows as a guest and do this song, pretty much for the rest of his life. I met him after he did the song at a show in 1991. Bobby was also a part time actor, he was in a few of the 60's Beach movies. He had to make an album of more songs like this one since it was in high demand. The whole album is great, very funny, "A Monster's Holiday" is the ghoulish Christmas song.
Man Asia looks gorgeous! The Groovy Ghoulies have a coffin load of Halloween songs from a 70's cartoon show. The best are 1,2,3, You can't hide from me. Super Ghoul, & When I grow up.
Bobby boris pickett was imoersonating Boris Karloff who made many monster movies back in the day.He played Frankenstien Thats why he said get a jolt from my electrodes from his neck.
All the kids that grew up in the 50s/60s/70s, and even 80s, grew up with the old black & white horror films made in the 30s and 40s. Dracula, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, The Wolfman, etc. Watch a few sometime, then check out Mel Brooks' 'Young Frankenstein.' _Really_ funny.
The mash started with the dance The Mashed Potato. which is mainly the foot movement of moving your foot back and forth as if you are mashing a potato into the ground.

P.S. The girls singing back up is Darlene Love & The Blossoms.
The "Monster Mash" was a takeoff on the popular dance "The Mashed Potato". There was also a song called "Mashed Potato Time". Bobby "Boris" Pickett was doing his Boris Karloff impersonation. :-)
Wife here.., WOW!!..Sooo Cool..My Mother LOVED this 45..(As a very small child I was actually kinda afraid of the song.)..LOL., but enamored) She played the heck out of it.., While we danced the Mash all Halloween night !!! GREAT MEMORIES Memories..!!!...Thanks Guys
This came out in 1962, and since my birthday is the day before Halloween, and everybody was still doing the Twist, and the Mashed Potato was fairly new, we danced to this song at my 12th birthday party.🎃🎶💞
Hope you guys watch the live performance from American Bandstand with Dick Clark, he does a wonderful impression of Boris Karloff as he sings, which is half the fun of this song.
You guys should react to the live performance of Bobby Pickett in the American Bandstand hosted by the young Dick Clark and you can see him making all kinds of scary faces while he sings the Monster Mash…Lol 😂
Damn Cleopatra you killin me, whoa! But yeah, he's right, you will hear this all over the place at halloween. I think I first heard it as a kid in the mid 1970s on the Doctor Demento radio show and I somehow was able to go out to the record store and buy the 45 RPM single of it. There is also some TH-cam video floating around of the Boris performing it and it's almost like he's a performance artist, it is so weird, it is weird as hell. But it's intriguing and he's really really magnetic. But really really weird. It's hard to explain, laugh. And yeah it certainly was vamping on that whole '50s doo-wop sound for sure. And you can also think of it as a mashup. It's a mashup of all the different monster tropes and motifs. All I know is as a kid I absolutely loved it. There is something addictive about that 50s beat. And then of course it's over the top exaggerated with all the sound effects. It's really really old but it still gets played today, that kind of amazes me. And I was bopping right along with you guys.
Another great Halloween song of long ago was "Haunted House" by Gene Simmons. Not the Gene Simmons from Kiss. Roy Buchannon does a cover of it too that's even better.
They play this back in the pre-1970s on the Dr. Demento show Cami T Dr. Demento played all kinds of wild crazy stuff in the 1930s 1950s and 1960s and 1970s and this is one on his list and I knew about it before that in the end and isn’t a great song is in my reason you guys are so freaking funny dressed up like that I love both of you I love both of you
Ricky page was a background session singer in the 50s and 60s she also had a solo career. She does the background vocals, NOT Darlene love and the blossoms. She also recorded at Motown with her daughters calling themselves joanne and the triangles, they were a Californian family group, headed up by songwriting mum Ricky Page and her three daughters, Joanna, Sheila and Becky; the girls recorded for a slew of labels in the early Sixties, both all together and individually, under a bevy of different names (the Majorettes, Becky and the Lollipops, the Bermudas, the Georgettes, Beverly and the Motorscooters).
Imagine being such a huge one hit wonder that you really only ever have to work for one month each year? That's what it's like to be Bobby Picket. He worked the month of October and didn't have to do anything for the rest of the year.
As fall is coming around I thought I would do a search for this song Reaction Videos and I was so Happy to find Y'alls video and your costumes are Great. I hope to see you do something great again for this Halloween.
B.J. needs my mom's number.. Call her up. She was doing the "Monster Mash in '68". I'm so naughty. It wasn't supposed to start like that. Anyway. Y'all check out the classic. "Santa Baby" by Eartha Kitt. Old but good. She was beautiful and sexy and older than my grandmother.
Hey guys the reason why his voice probably sounds familiar because his voice was a take off on Hollywood horror legend Boris Karloff. Boris Karloff was the narrator in the 1966 animated version of How the Grinch stole Christmas.
Boris Karloff did much more than this and the Grinch ( to me the animated Dr Seuss is the best)
I hope on your side your getting to see the footage from this song, his facial expressions just add to the joy
He was imitating Boris Karloff that always did horror movies he sounds just like him
He was imitating Boris Karloff voice who played in monster movies.
He's immitating the old Frankenstein movie actor Boris Karloff, , Karloff is also the voice of the original animated Christmas show ( How The Grinch Stole Christmas)

They should check him out doing the song. But they have to know who Boris Karloff is.
@@tomlemery8490 I don't think they do.
