I am quite a bit older than you, Marc, and I have to say that the attitude toward being gay is much different in your generation from what it was in mine. Kids of your generation have been given sensitivity training since kindergarten, to such an extent that to express prejudice against gay people is really looked down upon, and the coolest attitude you can have is one of complete acceptance. These are huge steps forward.

In addition, more factors which contribute to the internalized homphobia are: 1) Immoralizing homosexuality based on fear mongering beliefs, 2) Chauvinistic approach to Stoicism and civic duty.
In the first case, people for a variety of beliefs they came up with imoralize the act of homosexuality. They deem it wrong, because they think it's detrimental both to society and to the individual themselves, and it is also consindered a sin from their respective religion. As society becomes more secular, arguments against homosexuality have been broken down by facts thanks to science.
As for the last, people were conditioned to follow civic duty, which one of them is to reproduce so the state will continue living on and have greater defences built up. It's combined with stoicism, as the former targets at following nature's way of living and putting "virtue" above of everything else. But here's the major flow: First of all, stoicism isn't bad entirely and it is not a dogma and is not stricted only to appealing on wildlife. It teaches about many other things, like controlling your actions, responding accordingly to an external influence, e.tc.. When people however take it too far as to enforce it upon others, mainly due to their insecurities, they don't realize that they're causing harm instead of "ataraxia" (αταραξία) -> peaceful mental state. Not everyone wants to live accordingly to wildlife, aka eat, drink and reproduce. People themselves as free beings should choose how they wanna live their lives and not follow an unwritten rule of wildlife massively. So if someone feels like its "society's duty to reproduce" they might as well consinder remembering, that it is also their civic duty to respect individual freedoms. So the former protects you from being told to "act str8" and live your life how as you want. Philosophy is about achieving a mental state of peace... not the other way around.
