  • I am finally trying the Faber-Castell Pitt Graphite Matt pencils for the first time. I will also be comparing them to other "matte graphite" pencils that I have tried in the past such as the Staedtler Mars Lumograph Black and the Blackwing Matte graphite pencils.

    Beautiful drawing, you got so many tonal values using those pencils. I just bought 2 of the 6x8 Strathmore Mixed Media pads Friday at Michaels; BOGO 1/2 off sale. Blick's prices are definitely better for the Strathmore pads, but there isn't a Blick anywhere near me. I will be trying these pencils out soon for sure. Thank you for sharing your review and awesome picture Shana!

      Thank you Cheryl! I understand your plight, I don't have a Blick near me either, although it's probably best that I don't, because I could get into a lot of trouble with my hubby doing a shopping spree there! Lol I love the Strathmore 400 series mixed media paper, it's so versatile. I'm not a huge fan of it for colored pencils because of the way I layer but I love it for pen and ink, for graphite and it even works well for Inktense!

    I agree that they are fantastic! I only have the 6B and 14B and find the tonal values I get amazing. Thanks to your video I had a look in my pencil collection and found a 2B Lumograph Black - so did a little comparison too. It probably creates a bit of a blacker black, less graphite grey-black, but I can’t get as light as with the 14B. They are probably great to use together so now I fancy doing a graphite piece! 😎

      I'm glad to hear that! Between those three pencils you should have a nice range there. Down the line I will probably use both brands together as well! Let me know how it goes once you have a chance to do a piece!

    They are so unique! Their performance and the final result, are Top quality as almost anything Faber Castell makes!! I really like them and I hope Faber Castell never changes their quality on their products! These. their 9000 but mostly their lead holders TK 4600 and TK 9400, are by far my favorite pencils to either draw or write!!!
    Only pencil that I like as those and also have the same quality but even higher precision and performance, is the Pentel GraphGear 500 with Ain Stein 2B leads!
    I like the colour and the ergos/feel of the Staedter wooden pencils, but for some reason I don't get, no where near the same quality and precision out of them, as I do from those I mentioned.
    Great comparison, nice video I love your drawings so much, that I always wish I could draw that good!!!

      @@CautionArtistatPlay Faber Castell TK 4600 (This is the BEST pencil EVER in my opinion and for many reasons), then the Pentel GraphGear 500 and their famous Pentel P205, are not only best sellers among Artists, but also the best pencils out there for any kind of use.
      You can upgrade so many things, with only 2 of those pencils, that you will love them way more than you think. They will also save you a lot of money, I mean A LOT of money in the long run, not just because they are cheap and last forever, but also because their leads last forever too!. You will get a lot, without losing anything.
      Actually all Artists I know, that use pencils, all have those , or at least 1 of them. I've tested them all for many years, those are by far the best of the best. I only use wooden pencils, when I need super dark like 10B and higher.

    Have you used EE grade from Staedtler? If not...
    Mars Lumograph EE is little softer than Mars 8B Black and 2-3 shades darker when you apply pressure. I use EE in all of my drawings along with 8B black. With same amount of pressure they both give similar results but EE is easier to erase and has rougher finish than 8B black. When I want really dark values I use 8B on Top of EE which seems to blend the EE thoroughly on paper and I never use paper Stumps or Brushes to blend.
    You are great by the way.

    I find interesting that I've seen several people claim these feel like regular graphite because to me they don't. To me they feel kind of waxy on the paper, they even leave a waxy layer in my sanded paper when I file them to make them pointy, specially the HB. They don't have that soft, smooth, buttery-like glide regular graphite has.
    I find them more similar to the lumograph black (although they are smoother) than regular graphite. They both feel like carbon pencils

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Its an odd type of pencil for sure lol. I don't think they feel exactly like regular graphite. I think they feel more like regular graphite than the Mars Lumograph Black and Blackwing Matte do which is what I was referring to when I mentioned the texture. But yes they do feel different than regular graphite. They just feel a little less charcoal like to me in comparison to the other matte graphite pencils that I have tried.
      It's all relative, they arent as smooth and buttery as regular graphite but not as dry feeling to me as the other two pencils I talked about. I know what you mean when it comes to the texture though, they do feel different, especially with the odd crumbs that come off. That being said, I still really enjoyed working with them and like the feel of them better than the Mars Lumograph Black so far.

    To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if they're using a polymer lead formulation that's very similar to what is used for mechanical pencil leads. That's likely part of the trick with whatever they're able to do with the material, but now they're putting it into wooden pencils.

    A very expensive pencil, the F-C 9000, only costs $3.2 for 12 pieces in Indonesia, while the Staedtler Mars Lumagraph Black is priced at about $7 for 12 pieces. However, the F-C Pitt Graphite Matt costs $30.39 for 12 pieces. I know it's a good pencil, but it's too expensive for me. It would be wiser to buy the FC-9000 and Staedtler instead. That way, I can get 24 good pencils for only $10.2.

      Oh, one more thing that caught my attention: it seems that those dark matte pencils have a huge range from light to dark, making them somewhat a „ three in one“- instead of carrying around an HB, 3B and 8 B for instance, you can do all of it with one - which is a plus in my book 😊

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  ปีที่แล้ว

      They do have some graphite in them and are listed as a graphite pencil on the Staedtler website. Their lead is just formulated to have a higher carbon content than their regular graphite, which is what makes it darker and feel more like chatcoal, especially in the higher B grades.

    Graphite shine is never going away, it is inherently built into the chemical composition of the graphite itself. If an artist has issue with graphite shine they are in fact using the wrong medium. The hybrids for me transition more into the feel and lay down of some of the oil based colored pencils, lumograph blacks actually pair very well with the oil based colored pencil offerings.
    Enjoyed your drawing, well done 👍

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm, I hadn't thought to use them with colored pencils, very interesting! I love graphite either way, but this was definitely easier to film, scan, and photograph after because of the lack of shine. I think that's why people are drawn to this kind of pencil. But I agree, I don't think classic graphite will be going away anytime soon. It's classic and a joy to work with. I'm glad you liked my work, thank you!! 😊

      I don't get why people hate the shine. It's so shiny and cute for me, for some reason. I do need a darker kind of graffite to complement my normal ones, and that is what I want to get if I buy this one, but the shine is just part of it, I believe. But I can't find the 11 set. In any case, a chadcoal mix that actualy feel more like graphit seems exelent
