    Nolly is giving away gold here. Had a mix recently that this wouldve probably singlehandedly saved me hours on.

    Yes! I remember commenting about this on the P4 video! this has been the key for me since I’ve been doing mostly livestream full-band mixes since 2020, so needing low-latency, and working mostly with drum enclosures which have 3x as much bleed as normal recordings lol
    I’d say a few quick tips, since it’s very accurate if you’ve got even just a decent/okay source. if you find yourself losing too much of the top-end transient or it’s not “opening” up for you, since it’s only a 1 knob solution, you can find more ideal results adding some processing to help Saturn
    1) transient design before the plug-in to add some attack, a more definite transient helps it to open more accurately, and if your source is pretty weak, you’ll need it
    2) add more high-end before the plug-in. The dynamics control is band-dependent, so if you don’t have enough of the frequency you’re expanding, you could lose some softer, duller hits.
    3) drive the input a bit more, this works as a 2-in-1 since you’ll also saturate the top-end more, which adds more top-end as well that you might be losing!

    I'm just leaving another comment because this has saved many mixes and I've been also using it for other instruments that don't depend on high frequencies when trying to eliminate hiss.. thanks a ton again!!!

  • @vetramiga1
    @vetramiga1 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    honestly, whenever Eric's big barn studio is finished or he has time, you both should just sit together for 4 hours and just discuss mixing, recording, anything. the amount of knowledge the internet has gained on mixing from the both of you in the last few years is crazy.

    This is great, Nolly. I was looking for this trick, cuz I saw the original interview with Hardcore Music Studio, and I was impressed when you mentioned this trick, but now to see and hear it in the real context, I think it is amazing

  • @JaredNash13
    @JaredNash13 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Saturn is literally good on everything. I love it on a mix bus, but I actually use it a TON on rhythm Guitars. It smooths out and excites in a way that other plugins just don’t do.

    • @ghastlyshimmer
      @ghastlyshimmer ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, how do you use it on rhythm guitars?

    • @JaredNash13
      @JaredNash13 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ghastlyshimmer I will use the solo feature to find the main presence frequencies (typically between 1k and 3k), turn solo off, and then saturate them. This can work really well on lead guitars as they make them more present without making them too loud or grating.

    😱 oh man, just googled out how can i get rid of the cymbal bleed without hardgating i used to do all the time. now i immediately tested it in the mix and it works so damn well! i like how simple it is, there's no need to set any thresholds for each drum independently, it's just two tweak solution. love it, thanks a lot for this trick!

    Some people say Saturn sucks for gating, because of the pre-ringing effect when linear phase is on. So basically it makes transients softer. I don''t know, I use Saturn for gating and it's awesome, I will use an envelope shaper on a snare drum anyways.

  • @defmu3825
    @defmu3825 ปีที่แล้ว

    That is kind of a game changer. Had huge problems with a hard hitted open off-beat hi-hat in my last production and it was terrible on the snare close mic...

    It's funny because today I was listening to "Freedom - Rage Against The Machine" and you can clearly hear that the snare is gated, and when it opens you hear the cymbals/hi-hat, and I was thinking "there must be a modern and easy way today to deal with this". I guess thank you for reading my mind.

    that's great, but what about ghost notes on the snare? I'm not trying to be snarky, it's a problem I have all the time - my drummer is excellent, but he plays ghost notes constantly and I don't really have a great solution for getting rid of the bleed but also keeping the ghost notes. Anybody?
