A compressor as a gate? Magical cymbal bleed trick!

  • I’ve heard of a technique to get rid of bleed from hihat and cymbals on my snare track with the help of compression and phase. After finally have seen a really good description on how to do it with software I got curious how to do it all analog. So can yo use a compressor as a gate? Yes.

    This is fun seeing this done with analog gear. In regards to gating, I've heard of some people using certain gate plugins in with key spikes but I don't really understand what the advantage is so I'd like to hear more about that if possible.

    Learned this from Beau Burchell years ago on Nail the mix. But he did it itb. Interesting seeing it done in analogue.

    I love doing these phase things. Very helpful on many tracks! And BTW: a beautiful Harrison and Lyrec!

    I remember the first time reading about this trick from a mixing tutorial I found from our local library in the 90s.

    Wow, this is awesome. i just tried this inversion technique out in my daw with other effects than just compressor and with other sample than just drum samples (instrument loops). The delay was interesting because it had the richness of a reverb but the rhythm of a delay. And when i used a parametric EQ on the inverted sample i got an awesome and precise Filter where i could really pinpoint the bands.

    I felt like a fuckin genius when I discovered this on accident. That was with plugins. Gotta try it with hardware.

      Haha I can imagine that. Don’t see how I would have accidentally stumble upon this. Cheers!

      @@hoborec I was just trying some parallel compression and thought, "what happens with the polarity button? Woah, it's a gate!" I kinda wonder if the invention of the gate was a similar happy accident. This video gives me some ideas for adding high pass and eq to the mix, especially with the rest of the band live in the same room. Excellent content as always, man.

    Maybe it’s just taste in processing, but I feel like there is very little ring in the processed version. There wasn’t much in the original snare sound as it was but the little that was there sounds gone. I’m wondering if this is a tradeoff with this technique

    works like a charm. it seems like this technique has a lot of advantages. will you be using this technique yourself for mixing records? and if not, why not? 😊

    What is the difference between this and then just have a non-inverted heavily gated snare double?

    From ch10 and ch2, is that a Pre fader send going to 11?

    • @hoborec
      @hoborec  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good call, forgot to describe that step. No, I used the aux sends so that I could cancel the signals as much as possible. The inserts are pre and post EQ. Could probably try with the post eq sends the next time.

      It also works fine on kicks if they are not too fast. But it can really taming low end, that's may be not desireable.
