    I love how the music starts when she turns to him. I watched this so many times that her last breath after "i just want you to know how much i.." started to sound like a hushed "love" to me. aww man i’m so into them ;___;

Ironic how Kate is in a relationship with Josh yet almost told CASTLE she loves him. Hasn't even told Josh she loves him yet because its clear she doesn't.

Thank you so much for posting this! I own all 3 seasons on DVD but have yet to watch a lot of them. This is one of my favorite scenes, and is kind of foreshadowing "Knockout"/"Knockdown" whichever the s3 finale was called.

In 3x16, she said she wished she can have someone that can be there for her. She wasn't saying it because she didn't think Castle isn't there for her, she thanks him here for being by her side, but she just said that to tell him it's what she demands from him if they were in a relationship. Kate has been hurt so much in her life, it's so understandable why she needs to take it slow with Castle, he's her one and only and she doesn't him to hurt her.

Actually Castle UNDERSTANDS that, I just don't think Josh does.
I mean Beckett only showed Castle her mother's murder board not even Josh had seen that.

if this were the series finale.. and they just ended up staying frozen in eternal love, i think it would have been perfect. I love happilly ever after disney endings and all...but the whole poetic side of freezing in eternal love makes it so much more *ahem* romantic. lol.. plus, castle's a writer so it's perfect xD

When I saw a part of this scene in the promo, I thought she was gonna say she loved him (before she passed out)... but now I'm not so sure. If she was gonna say it because she thought she was gonna die, then why didn't she say it when the bomb was about to explode? Just wondering...
    What do you guys think?
I wish we had a blog like Grey's Anatomy's "Grey's Matter", where the writers talk about the episodes. That way we could have a lot of questions answered.

Simple, she's afraid of getting her hurt broken by Castle. Or she's never felt this way about any guy before and that SCARES her.

this scene was superb! i knew something was gonna go wrong by the end of the epi cause for some reason i had a feeling tht they won`t be on the road to becoming a THING so soon nd tht easily bt man i was crazy optimistic specially after watching this scene nd also the one where they hug each other right after castle defused the bomb :):) bt after i saw josh right after this scene..i really wanted to knock him out i mean i was literally like WTF! NO WAY..bt this scene was a winner for me

@Aline23 When I first watched this I thought she was going to say something about how she loved working with him or something along those lines. I didn't even consider her saying I love you until I read every'ones comments. I guess it's possible, but you're right, they were much closer to death with the bomb!

Thinking back, it was really cruel to add Josh as a character to this series. Kate must have known how upset Castle was when she started dating Demming in Season 2. It's the reason he left for the summer with Gina. Even though Rick was still with his 2nd wife, it was only because Kate wouldn't let him get close. Kate really put Castle through he ringer for so long. It's amazing he stayed at all. All the women Castle dated after he met Kate were just eye candy for him. He would have stopped immediately had he been able to be with Kate.

I think Kate was defending herself from real heartbreak. Remember Season 4 Episode 1 when she explains 'the wall' to Castle on the swings. Don't forget that when she first met Rick he was pretty much a playboy who dallied with women and proudly spoke of his 'little black book' and said 'Very' when Kate asked him how shallow he was. Sure he'd changed by Season 2 but Kate couldn't be sure that guy who liked signing his name on women's chests and bragging about how often he got laid wouldn't return. We all know now that he was NEVER that guy inside, that it was an act he put on to stop himself being hurt because he was every bit as emotionally scarred and vulnerable as Kate but she had no way to know that at the time. I know this is only a fictional show about fictional people but I honestly believe that Beckett was already aware she was in love with Castle but she didn't fully understand that her feelings were completely reciprocated, not until she was shot at the end of Season 3 and Castle finally told her outright that he loved her.

Actualy I think she always knew Castle loved her, and as Laine tells her at an episode on season 4 everyone knew she loved Castle and Laine even jokes about it asking Beckett "if it was suposed to be a secret" to wich Beckett replies with an ironic yes. And on season 2, when she is undercover and kisses Castle they do actualy kiss, that wasn't what Beckett intended but as soon as they lock lips they 100% kiss with passion, she has always known. It is just that she is a very insecure person, she has this tough badass cop persona that she shows to the word, but in reality she is kinda broken and very insecure inside. She was afraid that if it didn't work out with Castle she wouldn't recover and that she'd also loose the stability of having him there with her everyday working cases and whatnot. The two guys she dated she never realy comitted, she had one foot out the whole time, she wasn't realy looking for love, she was trying to protect herself. She is so insecure it took her almost 1 year after Castle said out loud he loved her and then she had to almost die for her to finaly muster the courage to admit she wanted him as well.
Even after they are together Castle has to remind and reasure her he will be there for her everytime, she is constantly afraid that she will be left alone. Its actualy a very interesting feature of her psycology, considering her childhood trauma with her mother's murder it would be natural for her to be in constant fear of not having someone there for her, even if that someone is someone who'd never leave her.
Thats why ppl always say Beckett is mean, she is always blaming Castle when he does something but when she hurts Castle she expects him to forgive her instantly. The fact of the matter is, Castle is much more mature (and Im not even talking about his age) emotionaly, he has had his disapoitments and he knows what he wants out of life and out of love, Beckett as I said, is somwhat broken inside, Castle understands that, he not only loves her, he actually helps her heal as well. By season 8 Beckett is much more mature, as much as ppl hate that season because of the forced separation on the first few chapters, when Beckett finds out Castle was again holding out information regarding her mother murder to protect her, she does not fight, she does not doubt his love or fear being left alone, she understands it and forgives him almost immediatly, thats real character development right there.

I'm sure she knew he cared about her and probably that he loved her from about halfway through Season 2. However, as Kate herself explains in the first episode of season 4 she built a "wall" around herself to prevent being hurt the way she was when her mum was murdered. With Castle she knew she loved him but she was still afraid because of his reputation and somewhat boastful behaviour. What if it turned out that the dilettante playboy on the surface WAS the real man after all and the seeming compassionate empathy was all just an act to get in her pants? What if the '9 yr old on a sugar rush' was all there was? We all know how quickly children can get bored with a toy and want a new one. I can fully understand why Kate was so uncertain about risking it. Remember the episode in Season 2 called "Food to Die For"? They discuss this very subject with Castle saying "The heart wants what the heart wants" when Beckett explains why the girl didn't go with Wolf (the chef) because she knew he'd disappoint her in the end so why take the risk?
That short conversation really does tell us pretty much everything about why Beckett plays it 'safe' around Castle for so long. And why Castle is willing to let it go on, because he realises that she hasn't yet accepted the truth about herself let alone the real him. Beckett's conversation with Lainie in "The Limey" is anything BUT ironic; she's genuinely concerned that he might know how she feels and that he will hurt her if she admits it to him. Meanwhile Castle thinks he was wrong, that Beckett DOESN'T love him after all because she tells the suspect in "47 seconds" she remembers everything. Castle genuinely believes that she lied to him about that to spare him embarrassment because she doesn't feel the same way. In truth they're both 'damaged' by previous heartbreak, Kyra Blaine in Castle's case and Johanna Beckett's murder in Beckett's and both of them are afraid of getting hurt again. Lainie describes it perfectly, "It's not a friendship. It's a holding pattern but how long can you circle before you run out of fuel?"
In "Always" we see Castle finally saying he can't take any more pain. He's already watched Beckett die once, he's believed she doesn't really love him because of "47 seconds" and his own insecurity and now she won't listen when he tries to explain why he did the deal with Mr Smith that for almost a year kept her alive. Beckett LETS HIM GO. Make no mistake here, Beckett was perfectly willing to let Castle walk out of her life for good and it's only her near death experience in the fight against Maddox that wakes her up to what's really important. When she finally admits to herself that she needs Castle at least as much as he needs her she goes to him and they do finally get together but even then the road is rocky for the next four years. They have an awesome love for and bond to each other but it's that very thing that means they can hurt each other far more than an external threat could. Both of them fear it but that's where the courage comes in because they decide to keep going and to keep fighting for that relationship no matter what. It's a brilliantly written and superbly acted relationship from start to finish and pretty much re-defined the whole 'slow burn' romance idea for television.

I think we're more or less on the same page as well, I just think Kate's insecurity ran quite a lot deeper than many people on here think. She'd also perfected the 'tough, savvy detective' role to the point she herself believed it and presented a very hard outer shell to the world. When Castle cracked those defences she panicked, first with Demming and then with Josh. When Castle realised how far inside his defences she was, especially in 2x24 he panicked just as badly which is why he went to the Hamptons with Gina.
I've always believed that had Beckett told him she'd broken it off with Demming as soon as she'd done that Castle would never have gone to the Hamptons at all much less with his ex-wife. The only way he'd have left the city would have been if Beckett had gone with him. Gina was his 'security blanket' (I can't think of a better way to describe it) in that she was emotionally 'safe', she simply couldn't hurt him or vice versa because they weren't truly in love and perhaps never had been. When Beckett told Castle she didn't want things to be awkward he instantly decided to leave, he made it sound like it was a considered decision but in truth he made it right there and then. When she broke it off with Tom Demming Kate had several days in which to tell Castle but she chose not to because she was still afraid.
In truth I felt sorry for both of them despite them being fictional characters because their frailty and insecurity was all too believable and a very common thing in the real world. It's actually a masterpiece of story telling by the writers and a masterpiece in acting by Fillion and Katic. It's still astonishing to me that they didn't win an Emmy each for all four of the first four seasons.

      @@MrPeterpiper1969 exactly exactly EXACTLY.
Well Castle and Beckett kissing the second time was not to distract the guy it was REALLY THEIR FIRST KISS.
Oh come on I'm sure Beckett knew Castle had feelings for her by the way he would look at her.
I mean when Castle thought Beckett was shot in Knockdown he didn't say it but almost told her he loved her with his eyes.
