    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Dottie (Geena Davis) and Kit (Lori Petty) make up after the game as Dottie says goodbye to her sister... and baseball.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    The All-American Girls' Professional Baseball League was founded in 1943, when most of the men of baseball-playing age were far away in Europe and Asia fighting World War II. The league flourished until after World War II, when, with the men's return, the league was consigned to oblivion. Director Penny Marshall and screenwriters Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel re-create the wartime era when women's baseball looked to stand a good chance of sweeping the country. The story begins as a candy-bar tycoon enlists agents to scour the country to find women who could play ball. In the backwoods of Oregon, two sisters -- Dottie (Geena Davis) and Kit (Lori Petty) -- are discovered. Dottie can hit and catch, while Kit can throw a mean fastball. The girls come to Chicago to try out for the team with other prospects that include their soon-to-be-teammates Mae Mordabito (Madonna), Doris Murphy (Rosie O'Donnell), and Marla Hooch (Megan Cavanagh). The team's owner, Walter Harvey (Gary Marshall) needs someone to coach his team and he picks one-time home-run champion Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks), who is now a broken-down alcoholic. After a few weeks of training, as Dugan sobers up, the team begins to show some promise. By the end of the season, the team has improved to the point where they are competing in the World Series (which is no big deal, since there are only four teams in the league).

      Interesting that her character here is one who has trouble finding her voice to tell her husband she wants to play baseball and finish the season. Her memoir that just came out is called "Dying of Politeness" where she says she had trouble speaking up for herself.

    I really want to say something, seeing as how it hasn't been said, Dottie always said that Baseball didn't mean anything to her, it was just something she did, like a hobby. With Kit and Jimmy it was their passion it was what gave them joy and happiness, what made them amount to something. For them I don't think they ever understood Dottie. Dottie's passion was to be with her husband, whom almost died in the war, she wanted a home, and a family, she was content with the life she had. But she had the skills to have a career in baseball but not the need nor passion; while her sister, whom was a little less talented and maybe not as much of a looker, wanted it so bad. So instead, it was Dottie who made the sacrifice, who left her life behind to go on the road to give her sister the chance she begged for and wanted. "I gotta get out of here, I'm nothing here". Dottie would never have dropped the ball in a real game, but what I can assume went through her mind was that her decision was going to affect Kit's future. If she didn't drop the ball, it not only would have shattered Kit's chances to play and follow her path but her confidence as well. She might have gone home either resenting Dottie or resenting herself and angry at having lost her chance to get out of the farm life. So Dottie made a choice. She chose her sister.
    Also, I don't think Kit was bratty or rude, she was just an immature hormonal teenager, she was what 16-18 during this time? Dottie was probably in her early 20s. These character aren't meant to fit into simple adjectives they are all fleshed out with their own feelings and choices. Reason why this is one of my favorite movies ever.

    • @katiebayliss9887
      @katiebayliss9887 4 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      LaneKSwenson honestly Kit could be a little “bratty” sometimes, but I can totally see where she’s coming from. She’s introduced as their daughter’s sister. And as far as not being as much as a looker I think they both pretty good looking. When I want the game part I actually was really hoping Kit would win and hit the ball on the 3rd pitch.

    • @blacjackdaniels200
      @blacjackdaniels200 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Dude the game was already tied. It’s not like if Kt was out the same was over. She didn’t drop it on purpose. Look at the whole at bat. Yes, there are a lot of signs and things that point towards her having dropped the ball purposefully. However, despite all of that, the first thing Dottie did when Kit came up was tell the pitcher how to get her out. That would have ended the game and would have made kit the loser and might have destroyed her confidence, but she was still willing to do it, but then what’s the first thing that Kid does? She overcomes obstacle number one..she hits “the high one” and then she blows through the stop sign and start trucking for home after the game has already been tied and it’s at this moment that you could see for the first time that Dottie was on the defensive and intimidated by her kid sister. And then Kit overcomes obstacles number two and does the other thing she never was able to, she beats her older sister. Yes, Dottie was smiling watching her younger sister celebrate with her team, but it’s not because she gave it to her. It’s because she knew that she earned it. She was proud of her. That was Kit’s moment..plain and simple. Dottie was all talent and Kit was all heart, and in the movies, heart wins.

      @@blacjackdaniels200 Any older sibling gets this perfectly. You never want to lose, but deep down, there is some pride when the little sibling has a moment.

    • @lmc3468
      @lmc3468 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@blacjackdaniels200 watch the post credit scene. When Dottie says to the older grandson, “you know you’re bigger than he is, let him take a shot.”
      And what did she say to the younger brother? (Basically, kick his trash!). Dottie was all about family.
      Dottie let her win, by dropping the ball, after proving(time and again) she wanted it. And that’s what family does.
      Kit was right, in the media’s view- she would be nothing with Dottie present. Dottie, not only, took herself out of the game, but vaunted Kit’s career and provided opportunities, by dropping the ball.
      The ‘hall of fame’ scene was a walk down memory lane that Dottie could have been more a part of. Feelings of ‘what could have been’ and such, But the clincher was when she saw and hugged Kit. Cementing WHY she left baseball so Kit could have her glory days and Dottie could still have a relationship with her only sister(how many sister do I have?).

    Dottie wants to go back home and have kids. She was so worried that Bob had died in the war when she heard about Betty's husband, but he didn't. She was so happy and relieved to have him back alive and well, with just a foot injury and now that he was discharged and free, she felt it was a second chance and they wanted to start a family while they still had the chance to do so. Kit doesn't want to go home because farm life just doesn't suit her and for once she feels that she amounts to something. She wants to stay in the city and get a job there so she can come back to the league for next year.
    As the saying goes, "We all have to follow our own paths."

    What I didn't like about Dottie's decision was that she was deciding to go back home before the world series and Jimmy said it would be a big mistake. I mean it's fine for her to want to go home and start a family but it wouldn't hurt her to finish out the season, first. Let her husband watch her play. It's good that she decided to come back and play the final game. Besides, Jimmy and Bob found out that they were fans of EACH OTHER!

    • @georgebarton1582
      @georgebarton1582 7 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      I saw a different take on it. One of the main reasons in my opinion, she decided to leave was because her younger sister wanted it more. My meaning is her younger sister wanted to be a baseball player more then she did. But She was always better at it. She knew as long as she played her younger sister could never get over that she wasn't the best and it would only drive a further wedge between them. That's how I took it anyways. It always seemed to odd to me that she couldn't hold on to the ball when she had always been known to do so she was literally the best catcher. I believe she dropped it on purpose more then I believe she couldn't hold on to it. After all the ball didn't leave her hand until her hand hit the ground. If the force of being hit wasn't enough for her to drop the ball surely her hand hitting the ground wouldn't be enough either.

      I always thought that for Dottie, it was never about the baseball. And it wasn't just about her sister. It was a personal choice because she wanted to have a family, she wanted to be with her husband. It wasn't cause her sister needed more space to grow, but because she wanted to grow. And now, she could leave her sister, knowing she'll be okay.

    Dottie showed admirable forgiveness in this scene, after the way Kit treated her before. Kit really isn't a likable person in this film...all she cared about was making a name for herself, whereas Dottie played baseball for the fun of it. All Dottie ever did was love Kit, but the jealous brat pushed her away and said "woe is me."

      It's called sibling rivalry....I'm 47 and I have two older brothers 53 & soon to be 52 that both played sports and got all the attention from adults and especially girls. They were both taller than me since I was a four foot nothing runt lol.
      Kit wasn't a brat bc I related to her character so much and understood the frustration of being the youngest and not being able to do what the big kids got to do.
      Also, keep in mind, back during that time era, young girls aren't that highly though of and often verbal and emotionally abused by farm dads and their moms would just idley by and not say a word. Keep in mind also, back then kids, no matter WHAT AGE wouldn't even think about talking back to their parents or being disrespectful! That didn't happen back then, so any contempt someone like Kit had towards a parental figure had to stay bottled up.

    Fun Fact, Moira Kelly (Nala in the Lion King) was originally cast as Kit but while filming A Cutting Edge with D.B. Sweeney he injured her Ankle. This prevented her from taking the role any further, that's why Lori Petty was cast. My question is this, do you think that Moira Kelly would've done a better Job than Lori Petty or no. ?

    I actually don’t think Dottie dropped the ball on purpose. I think over the course of the movie she became a true athlete with a love for winning. She gave it her all, and let’s face it, Dottie underestimated her sister. She remained prepared to make her lose by capitalizing on her weaknesses probably only she knew. Gave her strikes to put her out, could’ve changed the pitch, but didn’t. There was no signaling that she was anything but afraid when she saw her sister tracking down at her. Kit smashed her and she wasn’t expecting it. She dropped because she had been beaten by a sportsman who just played better in that moment. Dottie had a respect for the game, as well as sportsmanship. She would never have faked a loss.

  • @EmteeTeee

    Dottie dropped the dam ball on PURPOSE. She did. Yeah she told the pitcher to throw them high but then dropped the ball on purpose. Yes she did. Dottie always got the attention. Dottie always over shadowed her sister and NOT on purpose. She was a "beautiful" woman and yeah LOL, beauty always seems to get in the way :) She wanted Kit to have her GLORY, something for her own. YUP, she was a good big sister. Loved her baby sister.

    I love this movie, but I always thought dottie was afraid to become her own person. She got married before the war and knew back then she was destined to be a wife, homemaker and a mother, she never questioned her faith. Unlike Kitt who became an adult in wartime and didn't have a man to "love and obey till death do us part", and didn't really want one. She sure as hell didn't want to stay in their tiny town, milking cows. Kitt was a go getter, and those women are the ones who opened doors for us who came after them.

    I think Dottie dropped the ball on purpose to allow Kit to win smh. Watching this movie as a teen, I felt sorry for Kit. However watching this movie as an adult, I've come to the realization that Kit is not a victim of favoritism or being overshadowed. Kit is very good at using emotional blackmail to manipulate Dottie into giving her what she wants. It will never be enough for Kit.

  • @alexanderpytko5394

    Kit tells Dottie that she has plenty of time to have kids. Well, I guess that's easy for Kit to say as at the time, she didn't have a husband who was out fighting in a war causing her to worry. I guess until Kit has a husband she may not understand how Dottie feels about wanting to start a family. Men have felt the same way when their wives have been at war.
