It’s such a short moment, but the actor did an amazing job of conveying how much his mother meant to him. Between that, and the scene with Dottie you get the impression that the obnoxious little boy grew up to be a good man, who appreciated and adored his mother.

My late mother was a 12-year old girl (1944-45) that used to spend summers at her grandparents in Wisconsin. She went to many of these games. This is the only movie that ever made her cry...she's been gone over 20-years now and I still remember it like it was yesterday. I asked her if she was okay and she just smiled a little and said one word - "memories".

This is an exceptional movie and deserved far more recognition. And definitely the best movie role Madonna has ever played. (Even greater than Evita). Even if you're not a sports fan, it draws you in right from the start. The tension mounts, your heart races and the music is exactly how it should be. Best, wholesome movie around. It never gets old and doesn't leave a dry eye.
I’m a 60 Year old guy and I went back to the ball field in Medford Mass. where I played and basically hung around in my childhood and walked around while listening to “ This used to be My Playground “ and it brought me back to some wonderful times.

It's hard to believe that this movie turns 30 years old this year. I just wish Penny Marshall was here to celebrate this movie's monumental anniversary with us. I also played baseball as a child, and movies like this are a great way to celebrate America's Favorite Pastime, and they're also a way to celebrate the impact that both male and female athletes have had on the sporting world.
I was 10 year old when A League of Their Own released in theaters and loved it when I saw it and I still love this masterpiece given to us by the late great Penny Marshall to this day.
When Dottie and Kit smile and hug each other it's an absolute tear jerker. Don't make movies like this anymore. It's nice to see a movie with no foul language and nothing but great actors and actresses
I always found it so odd that Dottie and Kit never saw each other again for all those years. Yeah.. I understand it, I haven’t seen either of my sisters in over 10 years as we got older but I saw them every few years when we were younger.

She always was a sweet girl. She was raised by her father who didn't have a clue how to raise a girl. Shows you how important a 2 parent household(mother & father) really is.
She was raised by her dad and once she joined the team her confidence , awkwardness and shyness disappeared. As an older woman she was outgoing and even had a bit of fun poking fun at herself.

It has this weird "Titanic opening" implication that the sisters were just estranged from the end of the season until then and never said a word to each other until "it's been 83 years...", but all the kids and grandkids are calling Aunt Dottie, so obviously they weren't estranged at all.

One of my favorite films ever. Funny, serious and sad it just gets your emotions going. Great performances, direction and score. This is a classic movie.
This ending reminds me of my mom so much. We watched this movie countless times, I was born 1989 her 1967. Seeing the characters get older, reminiscing, and adjusting to losing their loved ones, jus moving and keeping it going. It really hits different now as an adult . I’ll miss my mom forever :( rip

Jeffrey Jones and actually that’s the one thing about this movie that some former AAGPBL players apparently took issue with was the portrayal of Jimmy Dugan. The women who played for the real life Jimmie Foxx say that he was never anything but a gentleman with them. It is true that Foxx did struggle with alcohol issues after his playing days were over, but according to his players he never behaved in the rude and abrasive manner in which Dugan often does here. Obviously artistic license to give Tom Hanks a more memorable character, but some felt it was disrespectful to Foxx.
I first knew Mark Holton as Francis from the Pee Wee Herman movie, and other wild zany characters from different films. It was refreshing to see him play such a kind, and earnest character here as older stillwell.
Funny how dottie left after one year because her and Bob wanted to have kids. But yet she shows up alone and her sister ends up showing up with her kids and her kids, kids.
The League was more important to Kit than it was to Dottie, so IMO it's only natural that Kit's extended family would be there to celebrate such a major part of her life. I like to think that Dottie's extended family celebrated her own important milestones with her.

In the end dotti didn't stay in the league so that her sister could thrive. Kit finally won Something which was what dottie always wanted a family. Kit ended up winning without trying.
@@SneakySnacks I definitely agree about the sibling rivalry between Kit and Dottie. Still, if you see the beginning of the film, you'll see that Dottie had at least one daughter and two grandsons. Her daughter was the one who encouraged her to go to the reunion. Also, IMO, Kit worked her butt off to make a name for herself in the AAGBL. Dottie may have had more natural talent, but Kit ultimately triumphed thanks to her hard work and determination.
Sure, while Dottie only played the first season and was a natural superstar. Kit most likely stayed in the league for several years (improving her game) and was a star after leading Racine to the first championship.
This 2 hour movie seems like it's only about 45 minutes long because I get so into it that before I know it, it's over. One of my all-time favorite movies!!!
I was in HS when I first saw in a cable. I've been watching it all through this years and I never get fed up. It was always one of my favorite movies of all time no matter what anybody says.
Gets me every time I'm in tears. no one never knows when they're living the best times of their life . so just live everyday like is the best time of your life words from a very unwise man who knows love.
The casting department did a great job with the older counterparts of the characters. The woman who plays older Dottie is SO SIMILAR to geena Davis and the voice! Also older Doris and older Mae have strong Rosie and Madonna vibes Even Stilwell 💕 it was sweet to pay tribute to his mother
I loved the happy ending. While a few of the characters had passed away, the reunion of the two sisters in the end was beautiful. It’s a great way to not only close one chapter in their lives, but also to show that they both were still alive and well after all those years. I’m sure afterwards they would probably spend time telling their grandkids all their exciting baseball stories because now they were seen as celebrities to these youngsters. The old ladies who they used to see as “Grandma” who were from “the Old days” were now people who their kids could brag about to their friends. Their legacy would live on!
One of the best movies ever made. It has a lot of meaning for me, from the 1990s, and the Madonna song at the end was beautiful. This movie never fails to get me teary-eyed.
My aunt was a very good semi pro in the era that followed this. I remember her talking about taking the train to Texas and bus trips. This movie gives very good perspective of that time.
2:18 The older Stillwell Angel was the guy Peewee Hermann hated (I believe his name was Francis Buxton or something like that) In Peewees Big Adventure.
Just another one of those films that I absolutely love and each time I watch it I always end up with a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes, especially when I see that the character played by Tom Hanks has died...Yes another of my favourite Tom Hanks movies.
To anyone in their early 20s who watched this movie for the very first time in their lives, I will always have love, admiration, and respect for thos film...I saw it back in 2015-16 and am still in love with it ❤
Always thought this film was an absolute masterpiece and it still is. This ending scene where they all reunite is emotional. For me though, This Movie and Field of Dreams are two of the most iconic and magnificent baseball movies I have ever seen and am glad that both have been selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant". Both reflect so much of American Culture.

It's always bugged the hell out of me, that when I've seen it on TV.....that end title sequence has been sped up....or the footage showing the older ladies on the field playing has been completely edited out.
Jacqueline Wade I thought it was Geena Davis at first but it's lynn Cartwright. However it's still Geena's voice you hear. They did the same with the original Superman. Jeff East played the teenage Clark Kent but it was Christopher Reeves voice
I think that will be debated until the end of time. ETA: I have a hard time believing that Dottie would deliberately drop the ball. That would have been pretty disrespectful to Jimmy and the girls with whom she had formed a tight bond and who had busted their tails all season. Baseball simply wasn't as important to Dottie as it was to Kit, and Kit fought for her big moment with all she had.
I disagree too....Kit legit beat her, it happens to even the best. She was happy for her sister though, but then again Jimmy gave her that look like he knew... but I think if he really thought it he would have been really mad.
This ending chokes me up. From Stillwell to then happy joy choked up when they are all together and Dottie and Kit when Kit came in. Just a beautiful movie.

Probably the most underappreciated part of this movie is the background music, especially during these ending scenes. This movie was literally perfect, yet it still amazes me to this day how many dudes consider it a "chick flick". Not ashamed at all to say this is one of my 3 most favorite movies ever!
Just saw this movie this week as I have not seen it in years! I always get choked up at the end as being a coach and dad of my daughters softball team really brings back fond memories as she does not play anymore.Great movie!

This ending reminds me of my mom so much. We watched this movie countless times, I was born 1989 her 1967. Seeing the characters get older, reminiscing, and adjusting to losing their loved ones, jus moving and keeping it going. It really hits different now as an adult . I’ll miss my mom forever :( rip

Jeffrey Jones and actually that’s the one thing about this movie that some former AAGPBL players apparently took issue with was the portrayal of Jimmy Dugan. The women who played for the real life Jimmie Foxx say that he was never anything but a gentleman with them. It is true that Foxx did struggle with alcohol issues after his playing days were over, but according to his players he never behaved in the rude and abrasive manner in which Dugan often does here. Obviously artistic license to give Tom Hanks a more memorable character, but some felt it was disrespectful to Foxx.

I love how happy Kit and Dottie are to see each other.
I first knew Mark Holton as Francis from the Pee Wee Herman movie, and other wild zany characters from different films.
It was refreshing to see him play such a kind, and earnest character here as older stillwell.
A part of me had hoped that Tom Hank's character was still alive for the ending. Just to hear him give a theres no crying in baseball or something

Funny how dottie left after one year because her and Bob wanted to have kids. But yet she shows up alone and her sister ends up showing up with her kids and her kids, kids.
The League was more important to Kit than it was to Dottie, so IMO it's only natural that Kit's extended family would be there to celebrate such a major part of her life. I like to think that Dottie's extended family celebrated her own important milestones with her.
@@yooneeque1 I think it was meant to be that she didn't have kids you're right it meant more to kit because kit wanted to always beat her sister Something. In the end dotti didn't stay in the league so that her sister could thrive. Kit finally won Something which was what dottie always wanted a family. Kit ended up winning without trying.
@@SneakySnacks I definitely agree about the sibling rivalry between Kit and Dottie. Still, if you see the beginning of the film, you'll see that Dottie had at least one daughter and two grandsons. Her daughter was the one who encouraged her to go to the reunion. Also, IMO, Kit worked her butt off to make a name for herself in the AAGBL. Dottie may have had more natural talent, but Kit ultimately triumphed thanks to her hard work and determination.
Sure, while Dottie only played the first season and was a natural superstar. Kit most likely stayed in the league for several years (improving her game) and was a star after leading Racine to the first championship.
I would have thought that Dottie would have kept on playing for the league since she love baseball so much
I love the way they still called him Stillwell Angel. It was like he had a whole team of moms still looking out for him.
This 2 hour movie seems like it's only about 45 minutes long because I get so into it that before I know it, it's over. One of my all-time favorite movies!!!

I was in HS when I first saw in a cable. I've been watching it all through this years and I never get fed up. It was always one of my favorite movies of all time no matter what anybody says.
It's nice that they're still close after all that time not to mention they finally got the recognition that they deserve good for them.

The casting department did a great job with the older counterparts of the characters. The woman who plays older Dottie is SO SIMILAR to geena Davis and the voice! Also older Doris and older Mae have strong Rosie and Madonna vibes

I loved the happy ending. While a few of the characters had passed away, the reunion of the two sisters in the end was beautiful. It’s a great way to not only close one chapter in their lives, but also to show that they both were still alive and well after all those years. I’m sure afterwards they would probably spend time telling their grandkids all their exciting baseball stories because now they were seen as celebrities to these youngsters. The old ladies who they used to see as “Grandma” who were from “the Old days” were now people who their kids could brag about to their friends. Their legacy would live on!

Just another one of those films that I absolutely love and each time I watch it I always end up with a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes, especially when I see that the character played by Tom Hanks has died...Yes another of my favourite Tom Hanks movies.
Every time I passed this field during work hours these women come to my mind. I love history and just seeing the field gives me chills

Always thought this film was an absolute masterpiece and it still is. This ending scene where they all reunite is emotional.
For me though, This Movie and Field of Dreams are two of the most iconic and magnificent baseball movies I have ever seen and am glad that both have been selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant". Both reflect so much of American Culture.

Also another favourite in that genre is Hoosiers (1986) although it is about basketball but nevertheless a masterpiece. Cheers for mentioning Bull Durham, you've got me primed to go and watch it :)

It's always bugged the hell out of me, that when I've seen it on TV.....that end title sequence has been sped up....or the footage showing the older ladies on the field playing has been completely edited out.
Saddens me in the beginning. Dottie remaining depressed that her husband died, but her coming out really cheered her up.

I think that will be debated until the end of time. ETA: I have a hard time believing that Dottie would deliberately drop the ball. That would have been pretty disrespectful to Jimmy and the girls with whom she had formed a tight bond and who had busted their tails all season. Baseball simply wasn't as important to Dottie as it was to Kit, and Kit fought for her big moment with all she had.
I disagree too....Kit legit beat her, it happens to even the best. She was happy for her sister though, but then again Jimmy gave her that look like he knew... but I think if he really thought it he would have been really mad.
In the movie theater I saw this in, when Jon Lovitz character was still alive, we all applauded

One of the best movies ever made about sports and team camaraderie ever.
Probably the most underappreciated part of this movie is the background music, especially during these ending scenes. This movie was literally perfect, yet it still amazes me to this day how many dudes consider it a "chick flick". Not ashamed at all to say this is one of my 3 most favorite movies ever!
Just saw this movie this week as I have not seen it in years! I always get choked up at the end as being a coach and dad of my daughters softball team really brings back fond memories as she does not play anymore.Great movie!
