The Peaches are managed by former marquee Cubs slugger Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks from Big, Forrest Gump and Philadelphia), a cynical alcoholic, and he barely watches the game. Dottie (Geena Davis from Thelma & Louise and Stuart Little) confronts him when he contradicts her strategy on the field, and she tells him that he would be more aware of what is happening if he watched them more. Anyway, the girls experience success on the field while forming a tight sisterhood off the field; Mae (Madonna) teaches Shirley (Ann Cusak) to read.

What’s the A League of their Own movie about?
During World War II when all the men are fighting the war, most of the jobs that were left vacant because of their absence were filled in by women. The owners of the baseball teams, not wanting baseball to be dormant indefinitely, decide to form teams with women. So scouts are sent all over the country to find women players. One of the scouts, passes through Oregon and finds a woman named Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis from Thelma & Louise and Stuart Little), who is incredible. He approaches her and asks her to try out but she's not interested. However, her sister, Kit (Lori Petty) who wants to get out of Oregon, offers to go. But he agrees only if she can get her sister to go. When they try out, they're chosen and are on the same team. Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks from Big, Forrest Gump and Philadelphia), a former player, who's now a drunk, is the team manager. But he doesn't feel as if it's a real job so he drinks and is not exactly doing his job. So Dottie steps up. After a few months when it appears the girls are not garnering any attention, the league is facing closure till Dottie does something that grabs attention. And it isn't long Dottie is the star of the team and Kit feels like she's living in her shadow.

Yeah, he's not up to speed with player's names at this point. Couldn't care less. Even when the commentator mentioned her name, he doesn't pay attention. And he calls Ellen Sue "blonde girl".
Why this movie is so great. An all time sports movie. They respected the sport of baseball. If a manager would squeeze bunt with your best hitter with a runner info third and no out, that person would be fired on the spot. It’s a respect to the game of baseball that makes this such a classic movie.
The music between the confused baseball signs was too funny!

the whole point of it was to get his attention and rile him up to actually do his job, knowing full well that call would get his goat.

How did Hanks nor Davis get Oscar nominated for their roles here is beyond me
Making statements like that don't mean anything unless you state who they should've been nominated instead of. If you don't even know who was nominated instead of them blanket statements like these are useless. They both gave great performances but there is only 5 nominations a year and there generatlly is more than 5 great acting performances in a year.
Its a comedy, all the Oscars that year were powerful dramas.
No matter the Clip That one See's of this GREAT Film. You can't miss the Story it's telling, or the People it's teaching you About. This was America in it's Prime Showing how at Home we could go the Distance, even with The War Going on World Wide everywhere Else. Man I Love everything About this Film. "Stopped thinking with your tits" - I know it's bad but I saw this movie as a kid and stored that line into adulthood. Never have used it, but I think it sometimes.

It was a huge cast that helped make it a great movie, Gina, Madonna, Rosie, Laurie and quite a few others that have been in major roles.
Hanks has a lot of great movies, his bad movies are better than a lot of peoples best movies.

just one question. If he wasnt paying attention how did he know Marla was their best hitter?
Also how did he know the signs? How did he know Dottie was signing for a bunt? He wasn’t managing so the girls had to have come up with their own signs that I doubt jimmy knew.
He Was paying attention, he just didn't like it. Throwing a tantrum basically.
He was there for every game, just because he wasn't watching every pitch doesn't mean he wasn't noticing who was hitting most of the home runs.
