  • ( www.TFLcar.com ) In 1963 Chrysler the engineers at Chrysler went complete crazy and decided to design and build a car so futuristic that it sounded like it could should fly. Meet the 1963 Chrysler Turbine. Only 50 of these extremely rare cars were built and non were ever sold. Why? because the powerplant in this Chrysler is the same one found in many helicopters...a turbine engine. Only nine of these Chrysler turbine remain today and they still look and sound as cool as they did 50 years ago when the fine folks at Chrysler went crazy and built a car with an exhaust that could easily melt plastic. Check out this very rare and very cool ride on The Fast Lane Car now and listen to what must be the world's coolest engine exhaust note.

I just turned 16 in 1965 when we won use of this car for 3 months. To see this and here it again brings great memories.

Still a wild and exotic car after 50 years. It really was a time when designers dreamed big dreams.

I was a kid when I saw one of the beautiful Chrysler Turbine cars at the Chrysler Exhibit at The New York World's Fair 1964 1965. The sound was amazing. A sort of small ground jet on four wheels and that fantastic styling looks better and fresher than any car of today.

I can't imagine how it was living with so many beautiful and interesting vehicles on the road. So many great people with great ideas and interesting executions of those ideas.

Its a beautiful car, Chrysler was always an engineering company and made many firsts in the car industry and in racing. Everything Mopar did was quality from paint to fitting, parts, everything. It wasnt until the late 70's with new management did everything go down hill for quality but now thank God since 2010 Mopar has regained its quality and racing.

If you watch Jay Leno's video on this car, they said the exhaust was cooled and actually comes out cooler than the exhaust from an internal combustion engine.

Yes, I love the Chrysler Turbine, in that they built several generations before this one and a few more after it. While it can be built, I see the problem of lag on power on and then power off takes a little time to turn off.
Exhaust Gas Temp is a problem, so they built coolers to help cool it before letting it go into the atmosphere. The sound is wonderful but may tend to wear on your ears after a while (hearing loss possible). Don't think so? Ask any fighter pilot or military jet propelled aircraft, it does take its toll.
Then the mileage is not the greatest. But, you could burn anything flammable, vodka, grain alcohol, gasoline, kerosene, jet fuel.

Another problem with the turbine cars were very high EGTs. The EGTs could literally melt a hand off in seconds!

Awesome car and excellent video episode, Roman!! Next time, please try to shoot the video without flying the camera everywhere, that roller-coaster style shooting is annoying...

Who owns the car in the video? I would love to see it in person and hear the engine running. So there is only two private owners and Jay Leno is one of them?

What Chrysler should have done was to put a piston engine in them and put them out on the market . They would have sold thousands of these cars just by the looks of them . Only one part of the car was ugly to me was those head lights rings .

It wasn't the cost of the car it was what it could run on.

I wish they would have at least kept the 55 made. I know that it would have turned out much worse for Chrysler if they had kept the 55. Maybe when Chrysler\fiat will make a electric or another turbine engines Chrysler turbine.

Chrysler spent so much time and money developing this motor. By the late 70s they had reduced pollutants and git it under EPA standards. It was all ready to come out as an engine option for the 77 LeBaron and a couple other models, but the company had financial troubles and the govt made a loan contingent on Chrysler ditching the turbine. Typical stupid govt crap.

Great car and vid, except! Please stop with this trendy way of shooting cars with the camera flying everywhere. Give us some nice clean shot rather than this roller-coaster ride that everyone seems to think is so cool.

  • @SirDavidHaddon

Only reason that the car was scrapped is the fuel mileage was high and the government would loose on fuel tax.... Nothing More! And if none were sold WHY? Does Gay Jay Leno OWN ONE???

    • @williamvolenec53
      @williamvolenec53 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Sir David Haddon, more research, my friend! This car did NOT get better fuel mileage than it's contemporaries did back in the day! Gas mileage was comparable, but the Turbine Car produced less power. The car was scrapped because of the prohibitive cost of producing the "mini-jet" engines! Tens of thousands of dollars EACH, at a time when a comparable gas engine could be produced for under a grand!
Jay Leno said that the Turbine Car would have cost almost TWICE the price of the finest Cadillac at the time, with little other than the unique powerplant to justify that price.
