In this video I'm restoring a 117 years old Stanley compass plane, type 113. It was very rusted. But I wanted to save the old patina underneath the rust so I didn't sandblast the parts but only washed them, derusted them with vinegar and sanded them. Then some oilprotectection and the rest of the restoring process.
The big knob on top is originally a sort of silver metallic but I like it the way it is now, plain metal with oilprotection.
I am also going to make a tutorial on sharpening planer blades, so I kept that part basic.
Hope you enjoy the video.
Very nice job 👏 👍 👌
Que plaina fantástica
I have one use it now and again 🏴
Ferramenta fantástica
You made a wonderful job of it , it looks amazing well done from a vintage Carpenter in old England 🇬🇧
Thanks Roy from a Dutch guy now based in Ireland
I never imagined a curved plane! That find was super nifty! Your restoration was peaceful because you did not attempt to make it like it first came off the factory floor. That was the best part.
Thank you, and I actually use it, although not too often

I’m not familiar with the soap you used. Why it and not a type of solvent?
Why the hot linseed oil? Did you dilute the vinegar?
The oil is for rust protection. The vinegar is not diluted, it's vinegar for cleaning and more acidic then white vinegar
@@hollanderprojects3948 thanks I just bought a Stanley 113 and I need to restore it your video is very helpful
Thanks, enjoy!
@@hollanderprojects3948I've never heard of this hot metal into BLO trick before. How effective and how permanent is it?
It is effective but not permanent. Best rust protection still is keeping it dry. This treatment helps keeping the damp penetration off for a longer time
Nice cardigan
Geweldig, heel mooi geworden👍🏼
I found a 113 couple weeks ago for 45 bucks
Does it need some work?
@@hollanderprojects3948 just cleaned up
@@hollanderprojects3948 looks to barley been used it's not a type one it's a later but that's better
@@hollanderprojects3948 I jave a type 15 no5 that' need some work a tote for sure it's been dropped and the iron and lateral adjustment are bent im afraid I'll break it I also have a bailey no 8 type 8 I think that needs a tote
Totes often break
I guess other than cleaning rust there isn’t much you do to the sole?
I didn't, wanted to save the old patina. But you're right, only cleaning in this case. Other soles have to be flattened but not this one obviously 🙂
If the iron is original then the v logo indicates it was made between 1912-18.
OK. Couldn't find anything about the V logo, only the type of frog, the knob and gears. Thanks
It's the stanley logo on the blade, different logo tell you what era the blade was manufactured in.
Some blades also have the date of manufacture on them. For example if your blade has 08/42 stamped in it it means it was made in August 1942.
