    The M-51 was a medium tank developed on the M4 Sherman chassis for the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) to support the M-50s with a more powerful gun.
    It was used in the Arab-Israeli conflicts of the Six-Day War in 1967 and the Yom Kippur War in 1973 and later in the Lebanese Civil War between 1975 and 2000. It was also used by Chile, which used it until 2006, making the M-50 and M-51 the second longest-lived Sherman-hulled vehicles in the world.

    The Continental 1790-AV was not a radial engine. Air cooled yes. V-configuration yes.
    A = air cooled
    V = V for V configuration like V8 or V12. R would be used for a radial engine like a R-2800 in a P-47 Thunderbolt or F6F Hellcat.
    D = Diesel fueled
    S = Supercharged
    1790 = cubic inches.

    I was around when this vehicle was a "thing". In certain AFV circles it was known as the "Super Sherman" and in others as the "Train/Locomotive Buster". With the British 105mm it was very often utilized as a "mobile bunker" with hull down positions being the much preferred utilization of this tank.

      I also thought they used the French 105 instead of the L7 ... But given the weapons stop from both France and GB, could it have been the US M68 instead (which is the US licence 105 L7) ?

    • @fdmackey3666

      @@ottovonbismarck2443 Not impossible at all though the ones I had the occasion to examine in 1981 (in a reserve storage area) all mounted the British OR French 105mm Main Guns. The thing that made the "Super Sherman" tanks that I crawled around in stand out from any other variants I had/have ever seen (to this day) were the much modified/improved turrets. By the way, and please understand I have yet to see one with my own eyes, allegedly a few 105mm main guns (along with extra gun tubes and other parts) were purchased from what was then West Germany. I suspect that IF such a purchase or purchases was/were made the weapons in question would have been mounted on some of the M48s that were "donated" by the U.S.A.. All I can attest to, because I was around back then, was that like the British and French, the German government was not happy about such purchases by the IDF via second and/or third parties.

  • @fdmackey3666

    • @fdmackey3666
      @fdmackey3666 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TanksEncyclopediaYT I never fail to be amazed at how certain historical events or things are forgotten, classified, or rewritten. Having seen the British gun, with my own eyes, mounted on/in as I said before, an in house/in country modified Sherman turret. The British gun in 105mm was a Soviet tank killer and was used in hull down positions as a TD, not to mention train/locomotive killer, in both wars. "Super Sherman" was never an official name for the 105mm equipped tank but WAS used by many IDF crewman well into the 1970s when far more modern tanks/AFVs entered service with the IDF. By the way, I was on site when the First Generation M1 Abrams was rejected (for various reasons that were corrected, for the most part, by the First Gulf War) by the IDF in favor of other, then somewhat superior MBTs were tested under combat conditions. Nothing like stepping off a big silver bird and seeing a certain foreign flag flying....And thinking "Ahhhh....Son of a....!!!! Damn it!!!!"

    • @fdmackey3666
      @fdmackey3666 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @The Expat Dodo Ah yes, yet another doubter. The French 105mm was the FIRST 105mm installed while the British 105mm came along somewhat later but served it's time in a much modified turret. It was BOTH guns, many of the tanks, and ammo for BOTH guns that lead to the British AND French placing embargos on the IDF mainly due to a, justifiable, fear of having the Ye Old Oil Tap turned off at it's source. It was those embargos that ultimately lead to "emergency" shipments (mainly by air but by sea as well) of tanks (mainly M48A3s and M60A1s), tons of ammo for their main guns as well as towed and self propelled artillery pieces, not to mention smaller weapons such as MGs (w/ammo and spare parts) and mortars (w/ammo and spare parts). Both the Johnson and Nixon administrations approved those shipments and ordered the deliveries via military aircraft and supply ships. By the way, it was thanks to high altitude photos take during SR-71 overflights of the region that "triggered" the emergency deliveries. Ironically it was phots taken by SR-71s that caught both sides out in lies about just where their troops/tanks/and aircraft were when the shooting officially ended.

      Wow, a sweet summer child who doesn't get that the Ronson nickname was a myth, that Shermans had a much higher level of crew survivability than other tanks of the era, and that Shermans had equal levels of protection to heavy tanks of its time due to armor sloping. Who do you think you're trying to fool?

    • @sirridesalot6652
      @sirridesalot6652 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      During WW2 and well before the Ronson moniker was applied to Shermans (because the "Lights first time every time" Wasn't used by Ronson until the 1950s) American troops were using Zippo lighters. In other words, the Ronson thing is a MYTH!
      Also, the WW2 Sherman didn't burn any worse than most other tanks on t he battlefields and you had a much better chance of getting out of a Sherman than you did in most other tanks.
      The one thing that I found really amusing about this video was the very high speed the gaming Sherman was moving at.
