I'm voting with my wallet ever since eververse was introduced in D1. It's just bad for the quality of gameplay. That's why I never have and never will buy silver. Not gonna hapen.

The way i always thought of it: it doesnt matter if a hundred people dont buy lootboxes if one youtuber will make a video opening a hundred lootboxes. Unless there is a unified outcry to boycott a game/microtransaction, like with Battlefront 2, it wont work.
Yeah the only time i have seen the vote with your wallet thing work is for that marvel avengers game. They monetized it soo poorly in a 60 dollar game that square enix reported losing millions on it. Doubt that will work with Destiny 2 being that it plays really well and the eververse stuff looks really good.

Anyone else blown away by the fact that in seven years of being one of the premiere Destiny content creators Datto has only spent TEN DOLLARS!? Most modern content creators regularly spend thousands on their game of choice just to make that money back in content alone (loot box opening videos, etc). This man lives his principles, y'all.
But this is destiny, most of the things you could get for free, especially if you nolife it like datto. Eververse is for people that dont have time or brightdust.
The truth of it is that Datto has so much goddamn bright dust from grinding the tits off this game, and because he's on week after week he's able to easily get anything he wants from the eververse dust rotation. I know it's not gonna change anything, but if the grain of salt in the desert that i am can tip the scale one way or the other, i'd rather have it tip the right way. So i've never bought any silver, even if i loved some of the cosmetics. I'll eventually get them in engrams anyway.

Voting with your wallet is sadly not effective in practice. Extensive regulation or even scrapping free market capitalism entirely is really the only way to kill off these practices for good. I know I sound fucking stupid, but clearly these companies are never going to decide to just be nice. It’s not on the consumers to simply not buy things.
And yet Infinite Warfare's sales were down from last year, and the game made nowhere near as much money as Activision needed it to, and after several releases were getting worse and worse sales, it wasn't until Activision started making changes, that they weren't borderline ready to file bankruptcy despite selling only millions of copies of their games.

Because it’s one of the best done monetization schemes I’ve ever seen in a game. You can get pretty much everything relatively easily by just playing the game. The only thing being that it’s time gated. Therefore some people decide to just buy the ornament instead of waiting or they wanna buy an old item. The monetization in destiny is fine. The community is just stupid.

I have only purchased silver for season passes, and I wait for things to rotate into the bright dust shop if I really want something, like the anarchy ornament for this season. Armor synthesis could be better, but it’s not getting worse. It’s adding some stuff, and putting extras behind a paywall. Yeah it sucks but y’all wouldn’t be so mad if they never added it. They have the data the majority of the community is interacting enough with their store to make it work. @@zomgpie2 call it whatever you want they've sold millions of copies including recent expansions they've also had daily active users on just 1 platform alone cross 100k so it's easy enough to assume in any given season at the very least a million people interact with the game. Numbers are hard to nail down but either way the amount of players complaining on reddit is absolutely a small sub section of it total players. I know 6 people personally who play and I'm the only one who goes beyond playing the game for interaction with the community. And I know my friends are some of the more hardcore types imagine the players who aren't raiders or gm attempters u mean I look at my stats and I'm in the the top 1‰ in many categories the other 99% are likley a lot less dedicated than me especially the bottom half or so.
Remember when the tower was attacked and many guardians were forced to retreat into the farm, and Eververse saw that as a opportunity to sell their things to the Guardians.

Never had a good conversation about microtransactions generally. But I'm glad you brought up horse armour. I remember when that was the most aggressively terrible bonus purchase in a game, and I wish more people in gaming had longer memories beyond nostalgia
An argument I've never heard anybody talk about is the fact that with armor synthesis they are effectively removing the chase for good-looking AND high stat armor. People looking to do the raid or dungeons many times for high stat armor that looks good will no longer have anything to grind towards if they could just unlock that piece of armor as a transmog. The cap not only serves Bungie in a monetary way, but it also serves us, players, to be more careful about what armor we grind for and what ornaments we unlock.

I only use dust in the store. Never real cash. If you play a lot, you will have the dust to get what you want. Be patient, most silver items wind up for sale for dust. Good video Datto

I've only bought one thing in Eververse in D2. The red Thorn ornament, and I did that with silver that Bungo gave me for free and left over silver from buying season passes a few years ago. I use bright dust on literally everything else.

I only had enough bright dust for 2 of the 3 elemental glows for the Solstice armor and they were so cool that I figured I would pony up the silver for the third one. Bungo immediately making them totally obsolete taught me never to spend money on Silver ever again.

Bungie did come out and say that the Whisper of the Worm ornaments offered in the eververse allowed them to develop the Outbreak Perfected mission Zero Hour. Itd be cool to get more transparency like that in the future, but we just know too little about their finances to make any sort of assumption. But I agree, that isnt a problem the consumer should have to worry about

Tuesday reset is Destiny used to be sacred. Factions, Gunsmith, Weekly Raids all used to have people staying up all night or missing work waiting for reset to hit. Seeing a squad of six guardians decked out in full AOT raid ornaments used to make me stop dead in my tracks ans salute those teams. Guardians would gather around and have dance parties celebrating how meaningful that teams armor was. Some of my greatest frienships started as a result of these unique traditions only found in Destiny. It was part of the soul of the game, part of what made Destiny so great, so special. I knew at that time I had ZERO chance of completing most of the raids. But in those special moments i swore to myself that i would become one of those Guardians that i thought were so amazing back when I was just a Blueberry in the Tower in D1. And I did it ! I dedicated the next 3 years of my life to becoming a god tier raider that could take on any challenge Bungie threw at me. "So I got with sick ass crew and went all out". Sadly once i achieved my goals those moments had ceased to exist. I found similar joy in chasing the OG Pinnacle weapons. I agree with you dude. If you wanna spend it, spend it. But I miss those magic moments and I feel like the majority of items that used to create opportunities to have those kind of moments are now found in Eververse. When i log in on Tuesdays I check to store rarely spend a bit of Bright Dust and split. Lemme be clear real quick. Bungie makes plenty of fuckin money. The question is... is it worth the cost of the soul of the game.
I just love how real they get. Datto doesn't shy away from knocking bungie AND the community under the bus, which they, and everyone else, should on occasions like these. When bungie does stupid things like this, its because the community asked for, or encouraged this. Look at how much shit nightfall loot got, look at how pinnacles went, look at how much people bitched about year 1 and half the loot not mattering, and not being good, and flooding the lootpool. The community asks for shit, they get it. It's not a monkey's paw, it's a lamp, and the community keeps rubbing the lamp and asking for things that piss them off. @@hehehe88 the biggest issue, imo with sunseting was that it was basically everything, there wasn't any line drawn on what was sunseted and what wasn't (plus forsaken and shadowkeep stuff was sunset, both expansions which bungie still charges for)
I feel like you left out the biggest microtransaction beast: GTA V online. The microtransactions rocketed it into one of the most money making games ever. It did so well that Rockstar stopped developing the single player dlc and changed it for multiplayer instead and is probably the same reason they're releasing it on a third console generation.

The ‘voting with your wallet’ part of the vid had me rolling, it’s one of the most hilarious and hypocritical parts of the community that I hear time and time again, yet fail to see them ever follow up on. Why would they ever not buy when they have no way to flex their piety?
Excluding seasons and expansions, I only bought silver one singular time since Forsaken (the season I started playing), the 500 silver pack to buy a Titan emote, and I felt good buying it because I felt grateful! Season of Dawn was amazing for me, I kinda liked season of the worthy, season of arrivals, black armory, the friends I made playing it, everything was really nice, but the more I see theme content being put behind paywalls, like the scarlet hive sparrow and ship in Shadow keep, the harder it is to defend some of Bungie's actions towards players who already buy every single deluxe edition (like me and many of my friends).
The "vote with you wallet" shit implies that people are smart enough to do that, if an action doesn't have an immediate reaction, most people aren't going to realise the consequences of their actions until it's too late, often they won't realise it at all
Also "vote with your wallet" implies a democracy, like we each have a vote to turn in. Thing is, whales just pump truckloads of ballots and systematically tip the scales the wrong way. Fuck whales.

No that's coming from the everyday players who aren't on reddit everyday whining and complaining in dattos comments. The millions of players who don't interact online and just play the game happily buying in without much fuss. Sure they may only spend a couple bucks here and there bit they add up way more than the whales in the long term. I bought about 4000-5000 Silver this season, for the first time ever. Because it was a great season the ornaments were great, and I ran out of Bright Dust. 🤷🏾♂️

Voting with your wallet is sadly not effective in practice. Extensive regulation or even scrapping free market capitalism entirely is really the only way to kill off these practices for good. Because it’s one of the best done monetization schemes I’ve ever seen in a game. You can get pretty much everything relatively easily by just playing the game. The only thing being that it’s time gated. Therefore some people decide to just buy the ornament instead of waiting or they wanna buy an old item. The monetization in destiny is fine. The community is just stupid.

@@zomgpie2 call it whatever you want they've sold millions of copies including recent expansions they've also had daily active users on just 1 platform alone cross 100k so it's easy enough to assume in any given season at the very least a million people interact with the game.
Numbers are hard to nail down but either way the amount of players complaining on reddit is absolutely a small sub section of it total players. I know 6 people personally who play and I'm the only one who goes beyond playing the game for interaction with the community.
And I know my friends are some of the more hardcore types imagine the players who aren't raiders or gm attempters u mean I look at my stats and I'm in the the top 1‰ in many categories the other 99% are likley a lot less dedicated than me especially the bottom half or so.

Never had a good conversation about microtransactions generally. But I'm glad you brought up horse armour. I remember when that was the most aggressively terrible bonus purchase in a game, and I wish more people in gaming had longer memories beyond nostalgia
An argument I've never heard anybody talk about is the fact that with armor synthesis they are effectively removing the chase for good-looking AND high stat armor. People looking to do the raid or dungeons many times for high stat armor that looks good will no longer have anything to grind towards if they could just unlock that piece of armor as a transmog. The cap not only serves Bungie in a monetary way, but it also serves us, players, to be more careful about what armor we grind for and what ornaments we unlock.
Remember when players said “ lets just wait and see” ?

I've only bought one thing in Eververse in D2. The red Thorn ornament, and I did that with silver that Bungo gave me for free and left over silver from buying season passes a few years ago. I use bright dust on literally everything else.

It's never too late to stop buying Silver. I've spent $50 CAD for some decent looking ornaments for my characters, and that's it. I will only be using Bright Dust from now on
Bungie did come out and say that the Whisper of the Worm ornaments offered in the eververse allowed them to develop the Outbreak Perfected mission Zero Hour. Itd be cool to get more transparency like that in the future, but we just know too little about their finances to make any sort of assumption. But I agree, that isnt a problem the consumer should have to worry about

Tuesday reset is Destiny used to be sacred. Factions, Gunsmith, Weekly Raids all used to have people staying up all night or missing work waiting for reset to hit. Seeing a squad of six guardians decked out in full AOT raid ornaments used to make me stop dead in my tracks ans salute those teams. Guardians would gather around and have dance parties celebrating how meaningful that teams armor was. Some of my greatest frienships started as a result of these unique traditions only found in Destiny. It was part of the soul of the game, part of what made Destiny so great, so special. I knew at that time I had ZERO chance of completing most of the raids. But in those special moments i swore to myself that i would become one of those Guardians that i thought were so amazing back when I was just a Blueberry in the Tower in D1. And I did it ! I dedicated the next 3 years of my life to becoming a god tier raider that could take on any challenge Bungie threw at me. "So I got with sick ass crew and went all out". Sadly once i achieved my goals those moments had ceased to exist. I found similar joy in chasing the OG Pinnacle weapons. I agree with you dude. If you wanna spend it, spend it. But I miss those magic moments and I feel like the majority of items that used to create opportunities to have those kind of moments are now found in Eververse. When i log in on Tuesdays I check to store rarely spend a bit of Bright Dust and split. Lemme be clear real quick. Bungie makes plenty of fuckin money. The question is... is it worth the cost of the soul of the game.

I just love how real they get. Datto doesn't shy away from knocking bungie AND the community under the bus, which they, and everyone else, should on occasions like these.
When bungie does stupid things like this, its because the community asked for, or encouraged this. Look at how much shit nightfall loot got, look at how pinnacles went, look at how much people bitched about year 1 and half the loot not mattering, and not being good, and flooding the lootpool.
The community asks for shit, they get it. It's not a monkey's paw, it's a lamp, and the community keeps rubbing the lamp and asking for things that piss them off. It's performative, it has to be, or else its stupid, and i refuse to reason that everyone that plays destiny is stupid, because im still sitting here grinding for a godroll Blasphemer on the moon, noticing all this shit people do, and im not alone in that, as this video crystalizes.
@@hehehe88 the biggest issue, imo with sunseting was that it was basically everything, there wasn't any line drawn on what was sunseted and what wasn't (plus forsaken and shadowkeep stuff was sunset, both expansions which bungie still charges for)
I feel like you left out the biggest microtransaction beast: GTA V online. The microtransactions rocketed it into one of the most money making games ever. It did so well that Rockstar stopped developing the single player dlc and changed it for multiplayer instead and is probably the same reason they're releasing it on a third console generation.
God, that's so painfully true, it hurts. GTA online is the microtransaction cancer that has just kept growing. And it ain't going to go away anytime soon.

The ‘voting with your wallet’ part of the vid had me rolling, it’s one of the most hilarious and hypocritical parts of the community that I hear time and time again, yet fail to see them ever follow up on. Why would they ever not buy when they have no way to flex their piety?

Excluding seasons and expansions, I only bought silver one singular time since Forsaken (the season I started playing), the 500 silver pack to buy a Titan emote, and I felt good buying it because I felt grateful! Season of Dawn was amazing for me, I kinda liked season of the worthy, season of arrivals, black armory, the friends I made playing it, everything was really nice, but the more I see theme content being put behind paywalls, like the scarlet hive sparrow and ship in Shadow keep, the harder it is to defend some of Bungie's actions towards players who already buy every single deluxe edition (like me and many of my friends).
The "vote with you wallet" shit implies that people are smart enough to do that, if an action doesn't have an immediate reaction, most people aren't going to realise the consequences of their actions until it's too late, often they won't realise it at all
Also "vote with your wallet" implies a democracy, like we each have a vote to turn in.
Thing is, whales just pump truckloads of ballots and systematically tip the scales the wrong way.
