  • With the day 1 raid experience becoming more accessible, I have been getting more and more people asking me about day 1 raiding. Initially, I didn't think I had that much to say as every raid is different, but eventually, I was able to sort of break down the rules and guidelines that I like to abide by when raiding on day 1.
    This video is for people really looking to step things up a notch. Perhaps your first experience was Deep Stone Crypt and you're looking to have a better chance next time. Maybe this is the first time you're chasing a high level placement. This video is for you. This video is NOT for people who aren't looking to take the day 1 raid a little more seriously. There are some minor elitist takes in this video. If the concept of taking a video game seriously for up to 24 hours upsets you, then I'm not sure what you're going to get out of this video.

    For some advice to newer day 1 Raiders, I’d say one thing to keep in mind is to not overcomplicate any of the mechanics. Think about every raid (outside of Last Wish)- every mechanic has 1-2 functions, not 3-5. Typically, an encounter will be built around a singular mechanic for the first 1-3 encounters before adding all in for a fight. A Riven is pretty atypical for a day 1 raid-don’t overcomplicate the mechanics, try to keep it simple

      @@halo3dia true but it also has split rooms with separate teams, an ending phase with more phases / eyes and traveling through the pits to the next rooms on specific times. so yeah, only 2 phases but a bit more behind the 2. also the cleansing of the symbols also has multiple parts, with the guider and guided, eye of riven and the lookthrough glass.

    adding onto the 'don't worry about boss dps' advice - because of contest mode, bungie can plan out buffs/player dps/boss hp so that you will almost definitely need 4 dps phases to kill the boss. we've found much more success making sure we can consistently survive 3 dps phases first, before taking ways to optimize for damage (ex. use your heavy weapons to kill minibosses. you can figure out how much you can 'cheat' and save ammo for the boss later down the line. use a riskrunner to stay alive, even if it prevents you from using an exotic heavy, etc.)

      @DattoDoesDestiny  2 ปีที่แล้ว +186

    • @pluto3194
      @pluto3194 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Also it just straight up makes no sense with the token system. It wouldn't make sense for you to just wipe if you revive people too many times, especially if you don't 1 or 2 phase the thing. The mechanics of the game tell you immediately that dying will never be a mechanic required to progress.

    • @BirdMoose
      @BirdMoose 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Exactly, even without the flawless raid requirement, it would just be bad game design to force players to have to die. They could do something like a false death where a player enters a new realm on hitting 0 health, but a straight up death requirement would not be fun to play.

    The section that I took to heart the most is being accountable for your actions. For people that don’t have the luxury for a predefined group, this is so big and I couldn’t ask for a better discussion on the topic.

    I'm happy that you mentioned eating healthy and (most importantly) eating light. I was about to mention it if you didn't, because I have a story:
    Deep Stone Day One was going great for myself and my team - I bought a bunch of healthy food, stress ate A LOT of it, and subsequently found out (on that day) that I have a gluten sensitivity after eating a pasta dish I had pre-prepped.
    There was one point after we cleared Atraks (roughly 10 hours in) that I got EXTREMELY sick. Like, shaking, cold shivers, and cant keep food down sick. Thought it would have passed, but after going through the 3rd encounter with a bucket in my lap throwing up, I had to bow out and my team picked up a sub for boss encounter, as if I kept going, I would have certainly put myself in the hospital.

    Awesome video thanks! After finding success in day 1 on last 2 raids, I like to add that choosing 5 guardians w same goals and expectations is extremely important. You don’t want to spend 16+ hours of your life where half team is committed The Whole day, and the other half quits in 4-5 hours . choose a team that is entirely on same page on expectations, and sometimes this may not be your best friend. It’s like choosing a roommate, who can you stand in same raid for 16+ hours without going insane.

    This is all really good advice, to add to the thing about Blueberry thinking and Bungie never putting in an intentional Death or suicide mechanic: It's worth considering Bungie's core gameplay principles when considering mechanics.
    Bungie will never require things that need specific compositions of teams. While certain loadouts and weapons might make encounters easier, it is highly unlikely that there will be a mechanic that requires specific elements, weapon archetypes or subclasses.

    I think my number one piece of advice for ALL endgame content is learn how to MITIGATE INCOMING DAMAGE. Your health bar won't miss you when you eat a sniper bullet a mile from cover!
    This comes to mind because the number of times on Atraks Day 1 people were too scared to get close to the boss for damage was astounding to me, often getting to it far too late, despite copious amounts of geometry and ways to not get hit by the shock bolts. People standing out in the open during VoG Confluxes instead of using the stairs or pillars to headglitch. Standing right in front of enemy spawns in Taniks. Not playing around the pillars and boxes in Gahlran. Even in GMs, standing out in the open, getting hit by 3 snipers that we know have been there since forever, and still blaming the game.
    Max Recovery keeps your uptime and peeking ability to it's max. Play all sorts of cover, use cover to restore healing and blocking abilities. Crown of Sorrow is such a hectic fight since there is virtually no cover in the boss room as you can get shot in the back by the other two sides, but the deal is, there is actually plenty of cover *if everyone is pulling their weight for killing ads*, as the spikes and different obstacles offer enough line of sight breakage to reduce some unnecessary damage. Try to look for any way to cut significant lines of sight from the enemies, and their spawn points. Use weapons like Witherhoard to spawn trap loads of trash mobs without even having to look at them.
    Also consider your sandbox available, what abilities your team has access to that you might not be utilizing enough. Heavy lanes that have no cover? You might want some resilience titans with a shit ton of barricades. Think you're going to take on any sort of wave of trash mobs? Heal rift. Heal rift. Heal rift. If you're on Well of Radiance Warlock, place constant rifts for the team, you should have them on cooldown as long as someone is standing inside of them. Middle Tree Sentinel has great ad clear passives AND great team defense, blocking any sort of big damage from mini-boss type enemies if needed. If a super prevents you from dying, use it. Better to have wasted than to have never used and died.
    Yes, sometimes the game is dumb, and you can't forsee the future of getting 1 shot. HOWEVER, you more likely than not will NOT be getting 1 shot in day 1 raids, you will be dying quickly, but not instantly, which means there is room to peek shoot, and use cover, without fear of dying as long as you can dip into cover and utilize abilities like heal grenades and rifts.
    Hope this helps someone approach the game differently than it usually plays like for 97% of content. Don't hold W key, just think about your environment a bit more critically, look for spots without enemy line of sight, play your abilities, peek shoot, and focus on creating space and breathing room for you and your teammates.

  • @sometoaster5530
    @sometoaster5530 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Something important is to have a team that won’t kick you before they finish an encounter

  • @SCRandall
    @SCRandall 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    1- The earlier you can cobble together a team, the better. It helps tremendously with building synergy and getting to know the people you're spending 24 hours with.
    2- People you can get along with are going to be better than people who are really good at the game. If you're going to be spending so much time in one activity under the stresses of contest mode and the raid race, you may as well go into it with people you won't end up hating afterwards.
    3- Destiny is an FPS, not an MMO, there most likely will not be super complex mechanics to figure out. If something seems simpler than you think it is, it probably is.
    4- The main goal of each encounter is to *survive*. Doing damage can only take you so far if you waste all your rezz tokens and then can't avoid a wipe because of it.
    5- BE FLEXIBLE. Yes, you are mostly likely not going to be asked to switch weapons, gear, or classes, but if it's really seeming like your team would benefit from something other than what you are currently using, don't be hard stuck and refuse to change things around.
    6- Go!! In!! Prepared!! When preparing ahead of time for Day 1, you should be thinking of every reasonable possibility in terms of class setup, ability use, armor mods, etc. While leveling, keep at least 2 pieces of infusion fuel per slot, if possible, just in case you need to bring something up to power (see #3). have an idea of what you'll want to use based on enemy factions, shield types, champion mods, and whether it's a close or long-range encounter.

    Thank you! There was a lot of great information in this video! As an experienced day 1 raider, I also learned something new.
    Advice from my side:
    1) drink a lot of water, don't do coffee / tea / energy drinks. I always keep full water bottle nearby for day 1.
    2) you need to have trust in the competence of fellow teammates. even a single person doing consistently bad will ruin chances of the whole fireteam to succeed. Play beforehand with the people you are going into day 1, do master vog or gms or master dungeon and assess everyone's skill level and personality (absence of toxicity)
    3) doubling down on "dont worry about dps" advice. focus on as much survivability and add clear as you can (mods like: resist mods, protective light, stasis dmg reduction shard, recuperation, well of life and weapons like: witherhoard, telesto, agers scepter, gjallahorn)
    Day 1 is the reason I play this game even when it is boring. It is very fun and worth it!

    Loved this guide! I wanted to add a few other thoughts when it came to weapons.
    Sleeper rolls are always worth farming for before a new season. It's good to observe speculation for upcoming buffs or seasonal artefact mods that augment weapon types as well as trying out anything that's changed in the sandbox. Look for weapons with the most powerful perk combos with things like vorpal weapon, firing line with loader perks /good ammo uptime and economy. Also seek out good add crunch weapons, SMGs and strong hand cannons can really help with the combat difficulty especially against tanker enemies. Ramp up damage perks are a little less useful so things like surrounded and frenzy are really good for high level content. Blinding grenade launchers are also absolutely king for this.

    From past experience with my group that has caused issues is we’ve tried to be almost too clever at times, making parts harder for ourselves, over complicating mechanics or trying to be too exact. I remember during gauntlet leviathan we thought you had to shoot the arrows at the same time, wasted like 2/3 hours trying to get the timing down. Only to hear you could just shoot as many times as you like. my one biggest advice is, keep it simple. Because it’s probably easier than what it might seem

    my team's biggest problems for new VOG was timezones and decision making. we're an Australian based clan, so the raid dropped at 3am. most of my team decided to stay up for it. We didn't even make it in the door before we agreed that we fucked up, we need sleep, so we took a 5 hour break for a nap. Got back in and got it almost first try. We will definitely learn from our mistakes for Witch Queen raid, and any future raid.

    Lesson learned from Deep Stone Crypt (my first day one): bring Outbreak up to contest power. If all else fails, as a starting point, use Outbreak for DPS and use your special and heavy for everything else. We didn’t get the clear because we couldn’t figure out what weapons to use. If I’d thought of Outbreak, it was a safe 3 phase, we could have used swords and GLs for everything else and probably would’ve gotten it. It’s an incredibly powerful weapon for underleveled 6 man content. And now it has infinite ammo.

      The catalyst gives it the ability to spawn nanites from dead enemies, and have more in general.
      _Intrinsic Perk - Parasitism: This weapon does more damage to enemies based on the number of SIVA nanites that attach to them._

    Some late advice that I just thought of:
    More often than not, mechanics that you learn in the first few sections of the raid will most likely remain constant throughout all raid encounters, likely culminating with ALL mechanics being put together during the final boss encounter.
    Examples are:
    VoG (Oracles & Aegis), Crota's End (Sword), WotM (Cannons & SIVA Balls), Eater of Worlds (Vex Heads), Spire of Stars (Greed Ball & arming weapons), Last Wish (Eye of Riven), SotP (Berzerkers, Batteries, and Phase Radiance), CoS (Witch's Blessing/Curse & Void Crystals), GoS (Tether, Voltaic Overflow, and Motes), and DSC (Augments & Bombs)
    Another thing, assuming the raid has a relic, test EVERY button input on the relic before looking to actually use it (if that makes sense). See what each button does, and see what those button inputs do against certain targets

    Thanks for the tips, funnily enough my first Day 1 raid experience was doing an LFG day 1 raid run back when VoG relaunched back in May. Shit was beyond complicated but fun as hell. Stayed up til late later into the night trying to kill Atheon but the damage wasn’t good enough and we kept wiping. Never got the raid clear or the 24 hour emblem but I did manage to get a taste of what raids were like.

  • @maximilianmaimone1803
    @maximilianmaimone1803 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My only real advice isn’t gameplay related. First, make sure your team is actually committed (especially if you want the 24 hr emblem). As in willing to call out of work or school to race. Ideally, if you want the 24 hr emblem you should always be the LEAST committed person on your team. One person leaving can be the end of a group that otherwise could’ve finished the raid. If you usually raid with people who tend to ragequit often or quickly, find a different team that suits your drive better. Maybe the race will be over in four-five hours, and maybe it’ll go to two days. Either way, if you’re willing to race 24 hours, make sure EVERYONE is willing to race 24 hours

    Awesome video Datto. Great tips.
    One that I would like to call out that my team has run into is "try to not take things personally". For example, if suggestions are made to alter how an encounter is going, especially if it is Person/Team A (which is you) try to hear it as a strategy adjustment and not "you screwed up".
    Feedback should be constructive between teammates and you should take extra care in your tone when you suggest things. Day 1 is not the day to "give each other crap" because tensions are most likely running high, as Datto mentions.

    I loved what you mentioned on getting to DPS phase for bosses. So many people were worried about what DPS weapons and what they were going to run (mine included) during Planets in RoN that we couldn't even make it to boss damage because of raid mechanics and lack of add clear. As Datto mentioned many times in cleaning people's vaults, "It doesn't matter how good a weapon or item is if it's not being used." We finally ended up settling for thunderlord which worked perfectly because there was a lot of adds and threats to clear while during the encounter leading to boss damage which Thunderlord was good at. Best of all it was still ABLE to put out enough dps to kill the boss. Yes thunderlord isn't optimal but the most important thing is that IT GOT THE JOB DONE (and thankful was easy to use) which is all that matters. My other tip would probably be that even if you are running optimal dps with like izi rockets or whatever. Don't be afraid to use that heavy to kill the important encounter targets. Yes it sucks that now you'll have 1 or 2 less rockets to shoot at the boss but its better to get to dps rather then not getting to it at all. That and there is a good chance a heavy brick will end up spawning for you anyways.

    What datto starts saying at 13:30 I believe is the most important, specifically being patient and calm and not getting angry at team mates. I remember I was doing last wish for the first time with a team consisting of all my friends irl and we had troubles at both morgeth, and the vault. At morgeth we just had trouble knowing who had how many stacks of the taken strength and people kept dying, or we couldnt stun morgeth when his timer ran down. And at vault we were on the last round on the last key and my friend didnt know that the white light above the platform meant that, that platform needed a key, so my whole team was pm wiped and my friend didnt know where to go and i kept saying “the last one available!” And he was saying “i dont know where that is!!”. After both morgeth and vault team mates exchanged unsavory words and we took breaks both times. But when we came back we apologized and kept going.

    Really good thing I can recommend is doing some meal prep beforehand. If you want to go hard on it, you can prep up some easy meals to microwave for every day up to the raid to take cooking out the equation. But really you can just do some easy meals for raid day. I did that for DSC and it was great.

  • @BirdMoose
    @BirdMoose 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    1 thing my team does is have assigned jobs we stick with. Even as encounters change we stick to specific 'roles' as a team. One person just hard focuses ad clear to keep us safe, another takes charge of rotating and exploring to try and find things we might have missed in the rooms. Normally my job is to take any relics or buffs and figure out what to actually do with them, as well as creating our system for callouts.
    Find someone who is good as specific things and let them continuously work towards and practice those things. You will find people getting good at things you suck at, and you getting good at things they suck at to balance each other out.

    This is advice i have from raiding in other games I would add:
    1. If you can have a recording running (OBS Shadowplay whatever else there is). Sometimes you will get a good angle of what happened that no one else might've seen and it is easier to discuss if everyone has all the info available there is. This also goes for screenshots. You could get a debuff so you see the name/timer, see anything that is hard to explain in once sententence, the scoreboard so you dont forget whats on there. Anything visual to an explaination adds certainty and easier understanding instead of having every player go through it and see themselves.
    2. In addition to strategies. Everyone can come up with ideas but it can be hard to settle on one. Designate a person before the raid who will (if needed) decide what to do so you dont spend time arguing about strategy to keep pulls going.
    3. Greed responsibly. Finding uptime early is good if you can figure it out without dying because then you dont have to figure it out at the very end and change drastically how you play. (might not apply as good to destiny as it does in mmos)
    4. Before the raid try to do the contest mode with the people you plan on raiding. Building that team synergy will reduce time spent talking because you already know how to convey information to your team so its understood quickly.
    5. (This is very far fetched and not necessary even if you compete for a top ranking) If you can have a 7th person out of raid to be with you in the call and look over your players. A person out of raid has a lot more time and can focus better on coming up with strategies because they are not busy playing the game.

  • @Karkesis
    @Karkesis 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    A couple things to add:
    1) Too many cooks in the kitchen. Six people can be a lot to try and collaborate on a single cohesive game plan and sometimes you'll have 6 different ideas of how to proceed. Don't add to the noise unless you had something meaningful to contribute to the conversation. It feels awkward sometimes to not have anything to add while the rest of your team figures out all the mechanics (this happened to me during DSC first encounter; I never touched the buffs so I was in the dark for most of the fight), sometimes the best you can do is shut up and keep an eye out (and when we finally cleared that encounter, I was the one who noticed the fuses in the basement and had the idea to swap scanner downstairs).
    2) Take breaks. Fatigue is the enemy. A 15 minute break can pay absolutely insane dividends just by resetting everyone's brains. Take those breaks away from the computer. Take lunch and dinner seriously. This isn't even my advice, it comes from the raid leader of one of the top WoW raiding guilds in the world. He constantly mentions regular 15-minute breaks, dedicated breakfast/lunch/dinner hours, and a strict sleep schedule as critical components to their success.

    As a general tip, survivability is huge. You need a chest piece of every element available. Find what causes you the most deaths and slot two different mods for it. Vandal snipers one shooting you? Arc and sniper resist. Boss uses void cannons? Void and concussive. This gives you about 40% resistance. In other words, you take only 60% damage. In some instances, this turns a 1 shot into a 2 shot. Which is enough time to hide and heal. Also don't underestimate protective light. It stacks multiplicatively and if it procs during a damage phase with a well, you are almost impossible to kill.
