There's a guy who does statistical analysis of large shark attacks on Sharks Happen. After you see how many times GWs go after kayaks and not the occupants, you'll stop fishing off a death trap. He was simply making sure you got off his patch of water.

that’s 100% territorial behavior by the white shark. i think most of the time when an attack on a human from a white shark happens it is because of this reason. all the data collected has the shark most of the time biting the victim once before taking off. it is much rarer when they come back and take the whole person. unfortunately they are so massive with so many razor sharp teeth that one bite often proves fatal by a white shark.

It's been said that the white sharks on the Pacific West Coast are 'spoiled' by those huge colonies of big fat elephant seals, which might be why most folks attacked (even if fatally attacked) are almost never fed upon. It's been said Aussie and South African whites are more 'transient', following schools of fish as they migrate up and down the coasts. As such, they are prepared to take advantage of any opportunity to feed that crosses their paths--sometimes it happens to be a person.

monterey bay has had several incidents of kayakers being bumped, followed, or hit by great white sharks...to me kayaks are shaped to similiar to a shark, and wouldn't be surprised if later on scientist figure out that great whites think the same thing and play king of the hill. add fishing from it and it definitely becoming a competitive sport for the great white in the area. maybe they should have linked together changing their shape in appearance and size. idk...
