Even these experts didn't expect the Indian government to take the same amount from the RBI to cover the shortfall.

Indian economy is going to struggle more as now the global economy is also slowing down. Trade Wars and Currency wars will affect India too. The ageing west will consume less and India's exports will suffer more. Indian govt does not understand that mere promises don't work. US Dollar is in crisis and a new Reserve Currency is likely by the year end. Stock markets likely to crash and precious metals and Bitcoin to soar. We will soon enter into a new global monetary system where old principles of economics may not play the same role as now. Prepare for the Greatest Economic Meltdown since 1929.

If the GST rate is much lower than the excise/VAT taxes, then atleast someone in the value chain must be making more profit since the consumers have not benefited by lowering of prices. Is there a gap in my understanding?

For now, they solved it by dipping into RBI reserves. God knows what they will do next year! May be they will repeat it for the next four years and bring RBI reserves to zero! They are capable of doing it!

US prints dollars fastest . Still it's economy grows. Govt should stop worrying about fiscal deficit and rather invest in infra and see more money with people to increase expenditure that fuels growth. Give monthly scholarship of 10k to every students who joins an undergraduate course. Mint and give, nothing wrong will happen. It will come back multiple times to society. Reduce or remove Income tax etc. Remove tax on diesel and electricity given to railways etc that will result in more money with people.

@@kp94698 I'm not qualified to comment on the need to change rate, only thing is to clarify that GST is applicable only on the additional value of the product. So final consumer / govt. pays/receives the applicable GST % of that product.
