    Safety is cool! Being safe is badass! Anyone who wants to risk their life while climbing is free to do so and it sure is impressive. But no one should feel like they have to be irresponsible to be a real climber. Just wanted to leave this here

    I started climbing in '69. You could quickly see how climbing/mountaineering was changing. I still love watching and reading about sport climbing but I think in general we've lost a deep connection with Nature and the mountain. One thing I valued all along and regret how little I had was vision. Being able to see what could be done and how to get there. Cedar is right, Peter Croft was and is such and incredible visionary. IMO there would be no Alex without Peter. And there would probably be no Peter without people like Paul Preuss. Honor to you all "adventurers and strong hardy spirits!" Grateful for you and your career Cedar.

    I used to do a lot of climbing as a kid and in my late teens I climbed this 30 foot outdoor rock wall and was told off for not using any safety equipment. The following morning we were all taken to this outdoor pursuits course where these large 100 foot poles were in the ground. Who wants to climb first said the instructor? Without thinking I went up it like a rat up a drainpipe. Again, no safety equipment.
    Now I'm into extreme sports. I just can't get enough of it.

    I've see this happen in many people. Someone doesn't have their life together, then they find something that makes it better and they go into the other extreme and make their entire life about that thing and feel like it's theirs. Like people who convert to a religion become the most fanatical nuts because they've got something to prove.

Whilst i know too little about him in general to judge him as a person, i strongly dislike this kind of talking about what is "proper" or "real". Basicly what he is expressing in a way is, that you are not a cool person if you don't risk your life or not doing it his way. Not very charming. I really enjoy all your videos but this interview doesn't shine a very bright light.

    • @zacharylaschober
      @zacharylaschober ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wouldn’t say Cedar is gatekeeping or putting down other climbers, he refers to them as climbers for this reason, he is contrasting what he does and was experienced with being “Climbing” while modern climbers are “climbing”. He just has an unpolished way about him, and I think this has plenty to do with his facial expression and gesturing.
      Course, there are people who are honestly confrontational about “Climbing” in a preferred style and sound alike Cedar.

    • @zacharylaschober
      @zacharylaschober ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Disagree but to the extent climbing should be as safe as possible within the scope of the preferred style. I sport climb to basically not think about the injury risk, quick assessment of any worrisome fall zones, check the bolts in the area are good, be with a confident partner, stick clip to avoid ground falls, and similar. However, what I don’t want is a sterile experience, and I have no disapproval for experiences which are a little more exposed, mentally provoking, etc., as I do enjoy a good nighttime highball, just danger isn’t what I am often after.

    Man, I have never liked people saying, "Okay Boomer," but the way this dude talks about the current generation of climbers? There are plenty of climbers (and other extreme sport athletes) who are doing s*** he would have never dreamed of doing. But as climbing became more popular, of course there would be more people who are not there to push insane limits. They want to have a little fun climbing and get back to their jobs. Alex is one of the wisest, yet boldest climbers in the world. He raised the bar in the climbing world drastically, and has earned bragging rights, but he don't brag , nor claim to be better than anyone. He might actually become the first old bold climber ever. If he has time before the world goes to poop. "There is old climbers and there is bold climbers, but aint no old bold climbers".
