As a non-Liverpool fan, I am astonished on their failure to adapt. Their style is inherent very easy to adapt. Just play low block. Pull all your midfielders and bring close to the back four. Install a wall there. Just kick diagonal long passes forward to the two forwards. Salah is there. Nunez is there. No need to press. And make your opponent very tough to attack because you are closing the space. High pressing is a trend. You can still do it in old fashion. Park the bus and you will be still a hell to crack.

If you watched the match, you'll have seen how Vinicius Jr toyed with TAA. He had a field day. Took him left, right and around the world. TAA was helpless
Klopp needs to sit Trent down and show him videos of some proper right backs and then stop giving him carte blanche to desert his post for every attack. It is not all Trent´s fault when Klopp is allowing him to get away with it.
Vinicius Junior is a world class attacker. TAA is not a world class defender. He’s a world class attacker but not defending

Thank you. I am still trying to solve the mystery of where he was sprinting to immediately before the first Madrid goal. I am astounded that no one has mentioned that, yet they criticise Gomez and Van Dijk. How are they supposed to defend if one has to cover right-back and the other has to cover the empty spaces in midfield.
I believe Trent’s always got lucky with people recovering for him. When he was younger I also believe he put a shift in and Yh he made mistakes but he busted a gut to try and make up for it. Now he just gives up and switches off. He’s got no desire to defend.
It's hard to be truthfull about players who have done so much in the past. Trent has never been a good defender, I will always remember him walking away from that corner, then looking up.. ynwa

Murphy's Liverpool bias is getting the better of him there, Trent isn't good enough defensively in a flat back four, which is probably the reason Southgate was reluctant to take him to WC until Reece James got injured. Klopp would be better off always using him further forward.

Trent was not the problem for all the goals . The first goal Henderson runs away and opens space for the attacker. The second goal is the young lad who lost the ball in a dangerous area, then Alison does the unthinkable. That was the game finished.
Adaptability is the key to great management. Big Liverpool fan here, but managers like Sir Alex showed the ability to win in a variety of ways. For Klopp, it's feast or famine!

Spot on, there'd be night and day differences in how the team would play in the CL and the PL under Fergie. Even against relatively lesser CL teams, Fergie'd pull up the drawbridge with a 5 man midfield and would either counter without, or when we'd attack we'd do so very carefully, never over committing numbers. @@simeonivanov3507 Fergie was having to contend with much tougher teams from Italy in the CL. Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan (particularly under Mou) were formidable teams. Not the case any more. On top that he had to deal with arguably the best club team ever in the history of the game in Barcelona. Bayern Munich always strong throughout the years and still. The english teams were strong as well, Arsenal under Wenger always strong, Chelsea under all their managers, particularly Mou/Ancelloti. Now, in the CL, if you can beat Real Madrid and the English teams, you're pretty much gonna win the CL.
I’m no Klopp or Liverpool fan but he took them within touching distance of 4 trophies last season. He has not become a bad coach overnight. The loss of Mane has hit them hard and Nunez and Gakpo need time to adapt and adjust.

And let’s not forget that before Klopp Liverpool were a team finishing around 3rd to 7th for basically 2 decades. He made them a threat once again and gave them their first PL title.
But if FSG aren’t selling I think it’s best if he leaves otherwise it’ll be the same issues over and over again. If a rich oil tycoon came into the club I’d say he deserves next season just to see what he can do with new owners but that isn’t happening bow. Best he leaves. Wenger tarnished his legacy and as a gooner I’ll never forgive him, he should’ve left long ago. I honestly think TAA's got such a high opinion of his attacking play that he thinks he should be playing RM/RW. Almost as if he thinks the manager will give up on playing him RB if he keeps up his absence of defensive play up for much longer.

Actually on Madrid third goal when Gomez gave away the foul, you could tell Gomez went in angry on the tackle because he went past Trent so easy and Gomez now had to go out to cover.
I've done it when I was younger and my full back was useless. My grandma could skip past Trent, his footing, balance and stance are not natural when getting stood up to be skipped past.

Why is there no conversation about how Salah doesn't trackback and always leaves Trent 1v1 against a player of the calibre of Vini Jr. One of the main reasons why the left hand side with Robertson was so good is because Mane would defend especially against a strong opponent. I actually felt sorry for Trent as he had NO COVER whatsoever.
Sarah has never tracked back. TAA has made individual errors in terms of positioning and other errors that have led to goals which has nothing to do with Salah. If Salah has to track back to cover your right back then that's an issue in and of itself.

Trent has been the weakest link in Li-VAR-pool's defense for the longest time, that's why he's not called for England's most of the time, even if selected, he either doesn't play, or FAKE an injury, so that he wouldn't get humiliated in front of the world. It's not Sala's problem as much as it is the fake manager Klopp's lack of attention to his weak side. Simple as that.
TAA was totally responsible for the RM third goal. He watched as the RM player ran away from him to meet the cross. VVD couldn't believe what he was seeing.

Even if Alexander & Fabinho f*d up for the first and fifth goals, Joe Gomez was supposed to do much better on both of those occasions.
I see Danny's point about Salah but over the years, Hendo and Fabinho have been the ones to cover for Trent and they're also out of form/fitness. For Vini Jr's first goal, Salah had come deeper to help swarm him and he'd done that at various points in the first half when they were on top. He didn't do that enough over the course of the game but he's rarely had to do that previously for a number of reasons

They need freshening up there, his defending is being questioned. It might take some defensive pressure away from him, there's been talk around him playing in midfield for years, and it could provide them with more attacking output. They're in a transition so maybe it's the perfect moment to at least trial it...

Liverpool have been sussed out, its that simple. Not the age of the midfield. Like Danny said, teams know how to spread that midfield and play through them. Taa is too busy day dreaming and teams know this. Gomez is a massive weakness in that defence also, he's a shocking player. Championship level at best.
TAA should be played in mid-field as he grew up playing. Playing as RB is obviously a failed experiment

Yup, watch the positions he takes up when we have the ball in the final third. More often than not, he's in the centre of midfield with Henderson/Milner/Elliott out wide right and Gomez out wide trying to cover the space. That's why THEY look like they're the ones screwing up.
If I was in Klopp's position, I'd drop TAA, not even to the bench. I'd drop him from the squad. We DO have options for rightback.
It's not up to Alexander-Arnold The Great though. If he wants to be the coach and sporting director he can go to PSG and share those duties with Mbappe The Turtle.

I Was at the game last night and it was difficult to watch live let alone on tv! Arnold is not a defender he needs to play as a midfielder his first thought when seeing him play is not to defend that’s a serious issue that’s been ignored for god knows how long now this needs to be addressed down that side of the pitch! Otherwise there is no chance of a top four spot this season It happens week in week out and teams no that side is the weak link and attack at will and nothing gets done about it! He ball watches all the time which at that level is embarrassing to do! I’d play gomez right back and push Trent into midfield because his attacking play can be world class at times! I Left Anfield baffled last night that at two goals we suddenly assumed we had won and the final whistle had been blown 😡 that a side how are we allowing an 18 year old to pretty much play on his own in that part of the pitch! Henderson and Fabhino should be made to clean his boots for the rest of the season! Embarrassing!

After the Newcastle result there was room optimism. This game found them out and they have slipped badly this season. They obviously still have a chance of a top 4 position in the PL which is all they have left to play for. An overhaul is necessary in the summer, whatever that involves.

You can't play five in the midfield and still be open. On top of that you go 2 up and don't keep it tight at all.
I'm no coach and maybe it's naive of me, but player's switch position throughout their career. Why not move TAA to midfield, that sorts out at least one midfielder you need, he's clearly more suited to the skill set required for that area of the park. Full backs are a lot cheaper and easier to find than midfielders. This isn't once or twice for Trent, this is getting to the point that almost every game, he's at least partly to blame for one or more goals conceded and teams know it are expose that side of the pitch.

Initially Liverpools recruitment was focused on all parts of the team. They addressed weaknesses and made significant investments to fix them. Lately they have been fixated on the forwards and other parts have suffered. Throw in the injuries to those new forwards and they have lost the capability to press from the front. Once that goes they are wide open, and Southgate was right to forego selecting TAA for the Euro's and World Cup. Criticised at the time but he was right.

It's funny how all these 'pundits' are unable to read teams and games properly. It's apparent to anyone who cares to see that TAA's woes are a consequence of an ageing team that's built to counterpress higher up that's unable to do that any more due to physical limitations of its squad. If anyone deserves to be blamed, it's Klopp because of his reluctance to evolve with the capabilities of his limited team.
They need a Defense coach. The man that got Brentford to be so solid defensively joined Anderlecht in the summer. Why didn't liverpool buy him? Probably would've gotten the whole team playing better and none of these problems would continue.

Klopp needs to throw Trent into a 5 midfield, play 3 at the back and 2 up front, I would also put Kelleher in goal for the return match.
Trent is dreadful at defending and contributes little in attack. The problem is that he's always been a dreadful defender but Klopp sticks with him, just because he can deliver a decent cross or pass once every few games. A poor, unreliable defender like Trent shouldn't be nowhere near the starting 11 of an ambitious team like Liverpool, but he constantly is and his place isn't even currently threatened by any other Liverpool player. That says a lot about how bad Klopp's management has been this season. Klopp has been doing an absolutely dreadful job this season and that's the main reason for Liverpool's shameful demise. Klopp out.

As a Man Utd fan who has no love lost for Liverpool I would say take it easy. Things can go wrong sometimes but this talk of the end of an era are a bit premature. The same happened in 2020 with 6 losses at Anfield & numerous injuries but somehow they got top 4 & next season they almost got the quadruple. Things aren't really as bad as they seem to be. They can still get top 4 since none of the teams above them seem to be in great form & it'll only take a few wins for them to get there. Klopp is a great manager & he's perfectly capable of doing that.
TAA is a good attacking wingback but a terrible defender. Joe Gomez is being blamed. But many times, Joe Gomez has to take up two roles - his central defender role as well as covering up for TAA. Very tough job. Vinicius just toyed with TAA. Embarassing.
The problem with Trent is that he has a big mouth,condescending teams like City that they have not won the champion' s league.etc.and stating " welcome to Anfield" ,these remarks normally comes back to bite you.
We were terrible after 2-0 up from Alison's blunder to horrendous defending. We gave away all 5 goals. Blame the manager for everything Jim. Maybe he should play on the field. We need new players for sure.

Klopp needs to play him in the midfield because he would have to do little no defending. He’s got no spatial awareness. The amount of times that Gomez took his space and was bad at doing so, was crazy. Vini’s first goal, Trent is ball watching the same way he did against Napoli. The militao goal, Gomez’s foul led to the goal but it was Trent that backed off Vini and left Gomez on his own. That last goal Trent gave up completely. He threw the ball in to Fabinho who couldn’t get a hold of it, then he proceeded to watch his two defenders go up against Modric and Vini. For Gomez, he just has to go imo but Trent should move into the midfield
