I would be honored to have my ashes put into this urn. Not many things in life or death are as beautiful as Ambrosia Maple, and add the fact it was turned by a master like you Simon.
I like everything about this piece. The change you made to the top was perfect. And thanks for reminding me of Mike's thumb stop for spindle gouge work, will probably prevent a catch on my next piece. Thanks for sharing.
That's a beautiful urn, Simon!! I have been needing to turn one for my son's ashes, but keep putting it off because I am afraid of not getting it right... you're piece has inspired me to go for it. Thank you for sharing, this really is amazing work!!
Simon first time I watched your video's was thinking of making my own urn we lost our son 11 years ago brought him an urn but maybe I can make my own for my son and one for me to when it's my time ! thank you that is beautiful urn and beautiful work on your shelfs! I'm Larry by the way will watch more!
Another great piece of turning. Thank you for mentioning Mike Waldt who has been my inspiration for many years. I'm a little behind with your uploads but I will catch up soon. Best... Alan.
Bonjour Simond tres belle Urne ! Beautifull work Simond ! Merci pour le video je vais essayer dans faire une !I will try to turn one thanks for the video ! 👍🍷
I've been to the stage where it didn't work out or I went through the bottom of a vase or box etc (many times) and rather than throw it away, its better to add an attractive piece which then makes your work/piece very unique. So I like your technique and persistence. Unless your turning gets shattered into pieces, there is always something to be done to rescue it and hey presto, you get a really impressive result. And anyone looking at the finished 'piece of art' who hadn't seen your video would think you must be a very creative artist indeed. (which you are anyway). Keep it up and keep on creating.
Awesome piece Simon, will look well on your shelf set 😎😎😎. Wish I could lay my hands on some wood with the markings that you seem to have a supply of, we don't have some of the woods in Northern Ireland that you have on your side of the pond.
Loved the urn ! Keep up the good work ! You sparked some great ideas, I've only been turning a year now. Look forward to your next project ! Thank you for sharing !
You always seem to end up with very dramatic pieces. Well done. All I have ready access to here in central Alberta is aspen poplar, birch, and willow...unless someone chops down a maple or elm. Have u ver tried turning Carragana (sp)? Very colourful and interesting grains.
I really like your technique, a good friend of mines father passed recently and I was asked to make them an urn. Any advice or helpful info you could offer me would be greatly appreciated.
Beautiful work as always Simon! Love your videos! I also have that "the weirder the better" approach to my turnings. The weird stuff is more unique & one of a kind! Take care bud! Steve
"That log doesn't have a really nice pattern", he says, opening up a gorgeous ambrosia log. "I will try it to see..." he says, proceeding to make a great urn. Simon, I'm going to have to talk to you abouty your habit of setting us up with low expectations :-) BTW -- I'm stealing that idea for a foot... Clyde
Another stunning piece! The india ink dye was a nice touch! I'm curious if you have tried the ebonizing solution on the ambrosia maple yet? I wonder how that would do? Any great job! Look forward to more!
Wish shipping costs weren't so high. I'd trade a whole pile of caragana for a couple of your maple logs. Turned a small spalted poplar piece from my firewood pile today and it turned out great. Never realized how much softer spalted wood is.
Enjoyed your video and the beautiful pieces you have turned. I am trying to understand the correct method for dealing with the pith. Can you help me out?
Une très belle pièce encore une fois. Je suis impressionné par la quantité de bois figuré que tu possèdes ainsi que par la quantité de vidéo que tu produis ;-). Bravo encore. Marc
Simon, I just discovered you on TH-cam and I like your approach and style a lot, another favorite of mine is 'the Rebel Turner' Al Furtado, I would say he specializes in odd highly defective wood and turns incredible stuff, he uses a lot of CA glue as you did in this urn, and I don't think it detracts from the piece at all. Kudos to you for your work brother. What lacquer did you use on this piece, I can't stand the smell of lacquer thinner at all--curious if your 'mix' stunk to high heaven. Loving your stuff--
G’day mate. Another amazing piece from. I love watching you turn your at works. Can you please tell me the finish you applied to this? The type of varnish and how much it is thinned down? Thanks for posting another great piece
Simon, beautiful work! Great urn! Just started turning on the same lathe you have, still collecting tools. Would you share who made your hollowing tool? IWas impressed with how you maseit look easy to use.
It's a shrub type that farmers used to plant around their yards for a wind break. It doesn't grow very thick but it's beautiful. Proper spelling is caragana or Siberian pea shrub. I'd be very surprised if u can't find it. Let me know how it goes.
Hello i have been asked if I could make a unit of some sort of container for the ashes of their dog, they said they was thinking a box but after watching this video i think I might try an urn. Not that I can make one as good as yours. Is there a formula to know what size is needed for what size of ashes?. I forgot to say earlier that I love your work so I have liked and subscribed. Regards Roger.
I have a woodworking friend who does a lot of urns which he sells to a couple local funeral homes, and he said what he does is ask how many ounces of ashes they typically had, and then he made an urn that would hold about twice that amount of ounces of sawdust--he say the funeral homes have told him his urns are very appropriately sized, and he also got a metal urn from them that they purchased from a big supplier and he mimicked that urns size as well as the sawdust volume thing.
I would be honored to have my ashes put into this urn. Not many things in life or death are as beautiful as Ambrosia Maple, and add the fact it was turned by a master like you Simon.
Beautiful urn, like the black lid and foot.

Wish shipping costs weren't so high. I'd trade a whole pile of caragana for a couple of your maple logs. Turned a small spalted poplar piece from my firewood pile today and it turned out great. Never realized how much softer spalted wood is.
+Daryl Reinke yes spalted wood is really soft . But sometimes you get some very nice figure on it
I loved the video. I especially like the black accents on this urn. You've got a new sub here.
