Socializing Your Dog - the do's and don't - Robert Cabral Dog Training Video

  • Socializing your dog is one of the critical things that people often fail in with their dogs. Who should your dog meet and who should they avoid? I give a brief talk to get you some basic information on getting your dog socialized with people. This is a lecture format video without dog demonstrations, one you should definitely watch!
All dogs must be socialized if at all possible... its best to do this with young puppies, but even in later months - it is critical for a well balanced dog that the puppy be socialized.

Hi Robert, I wanted to thank you for probably saving my young Malinois'' life today. A rabbit was in the front yard all morning and she opened the gate and went hunting. Your video on recall work which we've been working on for 2 days allowed me to override the extreme prey drive and retrieve her. Gratitude.

I took my already super well socialized sport dog out in public, I try to pay attention to who is staring at my dog with anticipation and looking friendly....especially if they are on crutches, or in a wheelchair or walking with a limp really tall....wearing a hat....anyhhing out of the ordinary is a huge bonus......I walk up to that person and ask if they will feed my dog a snack....adding that the dog has to sit to get the snack.....I then give the command to sit......and the person gives the dog the treat....maybe I provide a second and third snack...depending on how well it went....when I call my dog back to me.....I have steak or freeze dried liver something really great...or I whip out one of theor favourite toys.and call the into a short obedience routine and then launch right into a play session. Then moving a way from the person...call my dog to me and watch to see if the dog's attention lingers at all on the person.

Well explained as always. As you rightly said, being selective is key regards people and kids. Luckily for my pups I live near a school so I just let them watch the kids go by on their cycles, scooters etc. Zed had lots of rides on mobility scooters. I think most importantly is showing the pup the World. To let them feel textures under their paws. Grwat information on a mostly misunderstood topic. Thank you Robert : )

Awesome. When my gsd was 8/9 weeks, before he had all his injections, I took him out in a puppy pram everywhere, kids school, traffic, building works, shops and armed with tons of tasty treats. And a lick mat for scarey places I knew he would get a little scared at. Used it for a few months when we did GSRE walks for charity where he couldn’t do the full walk but still got to join in. Worked a treat and now at 1 year and 4 months, I can take him anywhere. Doesn’t even look when joggers, cyclists etc go past. Best thing I did for him.

Fantastic advice and so many people do not understand how important all these things are - even many trainers. I have always done this with my dogs - but still ended up with one of them who is suspicious and nervous around people who are afraid of dogs - but great with everyone else. But then, I put this down to a bad experience when she was a pup. We were walking past a woman on the street who looked down, saw my pup (a little puppy!!!) and started screaming and waving her arms around. Scared me let alone my pup. I guess you cannot control everything....sighs...

This was great. My issue is with other dogs, since we don't have many "safe" dogs in my neighborhood. We attend trainings at a local club and my dogs are great there. They are horrible in public when we run into dogs that are even mildly reactive. The problem arises in that practically ALL of them are reactive/leash aggressive toward other dogs. I'm still trying to teach the GS that I am still in control no matter how crazy the other dog is acting. Thankfully they are all on a leash!

I have wanted a dog since I was a little kid, and I haven’t been able to get one in my adult life because I’ve not had the time or resources to get one. I have been doing a lot of research on the many different breeds of dogs, and I have started watching your videos to start preparing myself to be able to properly train the dog when we get it. We still don’t know when, we know we will be ready for a dog in probably the next 6 months to a year, but I’m currently a home school mom with 3 kids, 7, 4, and 10 months.
My older kids currently are really scared of dogs. They’ve unfortunately had several situations where the dogs invaded their space and were rude, so they are really timid around dogs, so I’m not really that worried that they will mishandle the dog, but I am worried about the fact that they are bringing fear into the equation.
Like I said above I’ve done a lot of research on different breeds of dogs, and we believe an Akita would be the best fit for our family. We want a level headed guard dog that won’t bark too much, and won’t get in our faces. I understand socialization is really key for this breed as well as having a handle on training.
How can I make the best intro for my kids to the dog or puppy? Also would you recommend adopting over getting a puppy? Like I said above I will be a brand new dog owner, but I’ve been doing a lot of research up to this point, and I’m hoping that my parenting skills will translate well into puppy/ dog mom skills. Thank you for answering my questions.

This is a great topic Robert. I had a German Shepherd who had severe fear aggression. I saw two different trainers - one said I should take him to dog parks and get him "exposed" (which incidentally, I didn't agree with for fairly obvious reasons) and another trainer advised not to socialise the dog AT ALL (which my gut said wasn't right). When I say at all, their philosophy (and they are a large international dog training company) was that dogs shouldn't be socialised period because in the "wild" dogs/wolves don't "socialise". They were of the opinion that dogs should be kept in the yard 24/7 and only be exposed to visitors who came to the house. Long story and I won't go into all the details, however, I disagreed with this view, as my dog was an extremely intelligent, active dog and he needed different stimulation. So this is an incredibly important area that should be addressed.

This socializing approach is quite effective on neutral ground. But, socializing a dog can be much more of a challenge within the dog's own territory (i.e., at home). How do you overcome its territoral instincts when introducing a dog to a visitors on its own turf? Any thoughts?

@@RobertCabralDogs I personally love dog parks and so does my Ruby, at least till some fool comes to the dog park with an untaught aggressive dog. My Ruby got attacked a couple weeks before Labor day earlier this year. I wont go back to dog parks till I have my Ruby even better trained and I have a regular job. I really love teaching dogs. It was my passion years ago till I had to put down my last dog, I really love your videos and have actually learned a few new things to try in my own dog teaching. And I think a dog park do's and dont's would be an awesome video for you to have. You seem to have a real passion for teaching others and want to keep dogs safe. Dog parks are becoming more and more popular. Here in Kansas City we have 30 off leash dog parks. Plus I really would love to see what you would say to keep your dog safe at a dog park and I would be more than happy to help with your video as well.

This video!!! 😍 fantastic timing. Thank you so much. Robert i have a question please. My dog does not like me that much. I know its the same as with people. Some of us just arent that interested in some people. She only really cares if im there if i have treats. She is obedient to me ONLY when she thinks she is going to get a reward. Ive hand fed her, ive limited her interaction with other people in the hopes of getting her to pay more attention to me. Ive tried being more exciting (which is difficult as im s boring person 😂😂) ive even fed her using your famous mouth technique. Nothing. She tolerates me, she doesnt mind me fussing her but other than that nothing i do gets her tail wagging like the rest of my family, she is extremely happy with them and works for them even when they dont have treats. We just dont have that “bond” people talk about. Ive watched several of the videos you have talked about how to bond with your dog. Are there any more exercises i could do to get her to bond with me? I am the only one home during the day, im the one who feeds her and im the one who walks her every day. So i genuinely am at a loss as to what i may have done to make her like this. She looks at me in the way you look at that annoying co worker who you know you cant get away from but you have to tolerate because you like getting paid 😂😂😂 please help robert im desperate for help here

You may have picked a dog that's not compatible with your personality. Some dogs are naturally aloof & standoffish. Yours doesn't seem very affectionate, which you can't change. They respect confident owners, so you have to respect her preference for space.

I took my Male to the wrong dog club for training he was already well trained it was mostly for socializing which it the only thing he needed ,I live alone and do not have people coming and going ,since my kids flew the nest. Well they hated GSD 'S at the club ! I didn't know it I should have know when the lady said German Shepherds are so unpredictable while she was being jumped on by her Golden retriever. My boy did everything in class!! for 4 months no one touch him or interacted with him he was a big puppy at 4 months old 55 pounds .Well finally after 4 months I asked would someone please hold my dog for his stay command ,the only person whom would was a huge tall guy and when he went for the leash Isaac barked at him .Isaac knew no one liked us I didn't because I never went to classes before or a dog club .Isaac has a great temperament is great with other dogs ,cats birds even left the cat eat his big meaty bone .I still get upset 5 years later I waisted 4 months where we were not wanted .I thought a controlled place was better then a dog park and I love learning new stuff .I learn dog club people are very stuck up and it a dog eat dog world .My Isaac was so behaved and did everything I told him was not all over the place like the fu /fu little dogs barking . Clubs like that call themselves trainers when the were breed prejudice !

Thanks for the video, it’s very helpful, although do you have resources about what you mentioned on 4:08 - how to make it controlled?
For example my wife had a situation when she went to a dog park, and our Lab was more interested in other guy (even more other dog owner than the dog itself) across the park than the owner - my wife. How should we make this controlled in park where all other dogs are freely running around without the leash? This continued with the play with the other dog which had spikes around the neck and it struck our Lab, when she started to flee away and look for the holes in park fence. Thankfully everything ended fine when Lab found my wife and she was able to calm her down.
But still, she is not afraid to visit the dog park, nor is afraid of the owners, nor other dogs, although she prefers humans more than dogs.

Train outside the park. Dog parks are terrible places to socialize your dog. Most owners don't have a clue what signals their dogs are giving out and parks tend to be a free for all. Work your dog at the fence. It can be difficult to find humans to greet your dog -- with a 7 month old Golden Retriever everyone thinks "friendly" and rushes to pet (my pup is extremely excitable and I need very calm greetings) .they also say "I don't care if he jumps on me." ... well, I care -- you have to be ok with being what some people would consider rude and stop people before they get to you and say "I am training my dog,. If you would like to pet him and give him a treat I would like to tell you how to first." I have found that most people are very cooperative and it gives you a great chance to control the greeting. A few good places to do this are Lowes, Home Depot and Nordstrom. The floors at all of these places can be hard. Practice outside the doors before you work inside.

Could you do a segment on how to help a young rescue dog to be socialized. I rescued a young, lovely female mid size dog, fearful but with me and my walker, increasingly happy. But when we walk her in town on weekends and a family interested in her goes to pet her, she growls. What more can I do?

I have an almost 5 year old Belgian Malinois mix who, while she's never growled at anyone trying to pet her, will move out of their reach.
I tell people not to pet her (I'm polite about it, but insistent). She has no bite history, and I don't want her feeling threatened (it took 7 months to desensitise her to people. She will sniff them if they allow her to make the first move).
I think your dog might feel threatened (especially if people move toward her quickly). That growl is a warning that she's uncomfortable, especially if her body is stiff and her tail is either low or tucked.

Wait until they give up and immediately drop down and praise them. Treat them. Lots of physical love from you. Stand up. Rinse repeat

I have a 4 month lab, I've been very religious with her walks every day and night.
Problem that I have in my head is that, "what if I socialize my lab with so many people and dogs that one day if Im in danger, my dog just wants to love the offender?"

Question: I have my GSD/Pitbull, I brought him the the dog park for the 1st time yesterday, his obedience kicked right in with me, but also , he was very observant, and wasn’t aggressive in anyway, dogs kept coming up to him and sniffing him. I am just wondering if keeping my leash on him for the 1st time is a good idea? He doesn’t run from dogs, he just gets right into obedience role. And advice would be greatly appreciated.

Dog parks are the worst place to take a dog

Even as a puppy, my dobie didn't "like" everyone. Treats and toys didn't matter. Pro trainer (black) made no difference. Uniforms and ethnicities aren't a factor. If he likes you he never forgets the introduction. However, he's a shrude judge of character . We do only obedience and agility... No bite work.

Question - how do you socialise an adult dog? We have an Australian Cattle dog who wasn’t socialised enough. He’s “shy” and weary, only likes dogs and people after he’s dated them a few times. What I mean is after he sees the same dog or person about 4-5 times they are his best friend for life! Unfortunately on first meeting his ears are back and cautiously sniffing. He’s a typical cattle dog and if someone tried to pat him he tried to either back away or warning nip in the air which is very typical cattle dog.
What would you recommend so I can work up to him bring more comfortable in the first or second date ? not sure how to progress from here.

missnars87 teach your dog place command and hold him accountable to stay there when visitors are over. New people don’t necessarily need to pet your dog, as long as your dog is comfortable in the vicinity of new people you should be okay

My girl loves other dogs but very people wary. I have found she is fine if I walk her down town now but started slowly, in less populated places. Never forced her to get close to people. If someone asked to say hi, I would advise of her wariness and instead of them coming too close would tell them to ignore her first to gauge her reaction. At the same time I would drop treats for her and move closer depending on reaction. If she went up to them, they kept hand by their side but not reach out to her. If she showed less anxiety, I would give them a treat for them to give to her. It took a few times before anyone actually got to pat her but she now will go up to some people quite happily. Very much a work in progress but you can't rush things. She hasn't had a lot to do with kids so I'm extra careful with them and only ones I can trust to listen to instructions are allowed close. I do take every chance to make positive experiences with kids and she is a lot better now. If someone has a dog with them, she seems to accept the person too. Strange but ...that's just her. She has been like that since we brought her home from foster care where she was born. I have no idea why, could be genetic or possibly imprinted off her mum who had been found roaming the streets. She is 2yrs now, highly intelligent, very loving to me and my adult kids and is so good with other dogs. She loves her training which also definitely helps with confidence. Watch your dog's body language. Don't allow the air snap, take control before that occurs as people usually step back which enforces it to the dog. If I snap, human moves away, thus dog wins. Try getting your dog to sit without the other person getting too close. Positive experiences are the objective.

Apparently this step didn’t go so well with my dog. He is a bullmastiff. In puppy classes we finally stopped going because there was always someone there who was fearful of him and we got pushed to another room (and missed out on the instruction). Now I’m a new dog trainer (ABCDT) simply because my dog is a little dominant, he had issues with hyperarousal, and he is fearful of people who aren’t in our family (especially if he cannot flee). My approach has been to take him in public where I can give him positive experiences while managing others around us so they do not actually approach him. But I’m not sure how to progress him through or even if I’m doing this properly.

I'm getting a staffy pup next year. I'm single, though I do have visitors for him/her to meet often, but they'll mostly be the same people and also I live in a semi-rural area. So I've been worrying that a walk around the neighbourhood won't be enough to socialise my dog as we just may not come across anyone or any other dogs all that often. Would leaving it in a Doggy Daycare once a week or fortnight be something I should look at? I'm thinking it'll meet different people and dogs (especially dogs) under supervision. I have no need for dog-sitting as I work from home, but would it be good just for the socialisation?

I'd be cautious of a doggy day care. A lot of the times they have little dogs who are babied, and therefore are nippy, etc. You don't know how they would be around them or anything, and your puppy may hate to be in an unfamiliar place alone. My staffy hates kennels for example, because it's away from home etc

My issue in this area is I have an autistic son who is very hyper active. When we bring the puppy in he gets over excited and runs back and forth so the puppy chases him. With his limited understanding it’s near impossible to calm him down. We are not sure if to do small sessions of interaction because of how hyper things get or if keeping the puppy always there is better so it becomes less of an exciting thing?

I've asked for him to say Hiya to other dogs but it has only been on lead sniff, my neighbours dogs they have on lead jump around play and he is quite well mannered. But my other dog he bites him all the time in play and I keep stepping into stop it. He is gentle with my sheep, chickens and rabbits but can't stop this bitting my other dog. Worried it will cause problems when his older, how do I stop it?

He is Right, Some Clown in the Park with 2 large dogs that he couldn't handle decided my puppies would love to play with his 2 unruly dogs. My puppies were terrorized and screaming to get away. My One puppy was lame from abuse, the other only weighed 6 pounds. I kept telling him my puppies are scared they don't want to play. Put this Clown insisted it would be Fine and kept letting his dogs smelled, jumped on and nuzzled my puppies as I was moving away. The one dog had the little puppy's head in his mouth and the Puppy cried in pain. Lucky the dog let go of the puppy's head but the bite mark was only 1/4 inch away from her eye. This Clown said that was nothing and wanted to know when I walked my puppies so they could get together and Play. Yeah Right! Two 70 pound dogs playing with one lame Rescue puppy and a 6 pound puppy. The Puppies would not Go for a walk for a month. The puppy that was bite still goes Crazy at the sight of another Dog. The lame one feeds into the other's Fear. My puppies were Doing Great until this Clown decided he Knew Best. Everyone before this Clown who saw my puppies asked first and petted or talked to them. People would stop their car, get out and pet my puppies. They became spoiled for the attention. Their personalities changed completely after the two big dogs they became reactive and. fearful. They bark at everything. They are Spooked. Screen what Dogs meet your Puppy and also the people and kids who might pull their tail or decided to grab their paw and shake their hand really hard. There's a lot of Clueless people out there.

I just got a 10 week old GSD on March 31,2020. Had her 24 hrs now. I take her out in the front yard and if she even hears a dog across the street, across the fence, acts TERRIFIED and two ladies were walking up the street toward our yard...her ears go up and she takes a stance and stares but when they get closer, she cowers back and tries to pull me back inside the house. With sheltering in place I can't really socialize her. What do these actions tell me? How can I help her before she gets any older and stays scared of everything?

Don't let other people dictate your life! You have to be a confident role model to your dog, and treat them with discipline yet with rewards when they do something good and just love. Get him to sit and to calm down a bit when someone asks to pet him, and after that he should be ready to go. :^)

Well children are agood thing for your dog to want to avoid for a variety of reasons. Too many are just not aware of doggy stuff and some are malicious. Also parents tend to not want your dog to run up to their kids. And sometimes out if the blue a kid gets knocked down scratched or nipped in the face from exuberance. I prefer kids dont come up to my dog and i tell them better always be careful too. I love kids! Really i do. But most not with animals. The ones that are good with critters are some of the most wonderful souls out there and the are exceptional.

I was raised with dogs and taught at a very young age how to interact with them (my first dog was a German Shepherd, my second a Chihuahua/Toy Fox Terrier).
I think dogs and kids are great together, as long as both are taught how to interact. This means that adults have got to monitor the interaction until they're certain that both dog and kid can be trusted with each other.
Dogs have been some of the best teachers I've ever had.
