- Bob Mintzer, U.S. jazz musician, composer and arranger, will take over the position of principal conductor of the WDR BIG BAND in September 2016. The GRAMMY - award winner has played as a saxophonist in the big bands of Buddy Rich and Thad Jones / Mel Lewis and many more. His compositions belong to the standard repertoire of modern big band literature. Bob Mintzer has also set standards as a member of the jazz fusion band "YELLOWJACKETS". He has been closely associated with the WDR BIG BAND since the 1980s. Recorded on September 4, 2016 at the WDR Funkhaus / Cologne.

The WDR BB is one of the tightest ensembles around - all great musicians who play for the MUSIC. WDR's guests are always a pleasure to heart. I personally like Bob Mintzer very much -- iin addition of playing the tenor so well he is a learned pro able to go to all styles of music with a legit accent and has beautiful compositions!
One of the big promisses for the future of this super band. Keep it coming guys! Jazz on!!!

a great concert that most people in the audience probably got tired of..Why? Because the band played tunes the audience did not know
What do you mean by writing tired?
WDR BIG BAND ..LOL...? I thought my comment was self explanatory.. Most people in the audience get tired of listening to tunes they do not know.. I play coltranes giant steps on my channel but would never play it for a concert or even my mother who was a music major and has a college scholarship in her name.. Jazz musicians should always play many tunes all people in the audience know and then play solos over the chord changes.. You are welcome for the jazz lesson... Most people only want to hear their favorite vocalist sing their hits and not new tunes.. but the vocalist is tired of singing the same tunes
I think it's the exact opposite. Listening to and playing Jazz standards all of the time over and over again might get boring at some point.
Sorry JazzKeyboardist1, but rather than worrying about the audience, why don't you watch the video a second time - that way you'll be able to enjoy it because you'll know all the tunes?
