To be fair to IGN, most games aren’t only a few hours long. The reason most reviews are just ok is because they gotta binge a 30 hour game in a single week, maybe even only a few days. Doesn’t allow for a lot of in depth Analyst unlike a short game in that same time span

Fun fact: in sifu when you pick up a staff and it breaks until it’s short, it becomes a bat like weapon. Making it have the same finishers as the bat weapon and pipe. Insane attention to detail
One of the best, most detailed and considered IGN reviews I've seen in my many years of gaming. The extra 5 minutes in this one goes a long way - well done to the reviewer and editor(s) on this banger!
One of the rare times where the game review score truly matches the game's quality. Mitchell Saltzmann is definitely one the best reviewers in IGN and this review is yet another showcase of that. As someone who's sunk in nearly 100 hours into Sifu at this point, Mitchell's review seems to be the best one that really understands the game's vision and what it really is.
The reviewer forgot to mention that the enemy ai is also super smart. Low level enemies will sometimes level up after parrying your attacks and then they will gain abilities like picking up weapons you’ve dropped and beating you to death with it lol.
Not to mention, sometimes they will go past your takedown and become more powerful. Meaning they dodge or block more and become a bit more annoying to deal with.
Sifu's system reminds me more of something like a Tony Hawk level than a Roguelike level. The fun is in absolutely mastering it on repeated playthroughs, and the gameplay is so fun that you don't need loot or randomization to make that part really, really fun.
The difference is in stakes. No matter how many times you fail to complete a challenge or challenges in THPS, it doesn't reset your progress. You still have your stat points and previously completed goals. You still have the same level unlocks. This game punishes you with impunity at increasingly high stakes, i.e., roguelike.
The game has amazing look and great combat, if you could actually have time to fight, they could have made it a little easier because it gets annoying after a while
