Carl Jones, the co-creator of the Freaknik musical created in 2010, addressed criticisms that the show was akin to "animated blackface." He expressed confusion over critics' charges that the comedy was "nothing more than animated blackface," noting that he aims to tell the truth in his productions and accepts that it may offend some. Carl defended the musical, observing that it offered smart commentary and a strong story about a group of friends on a cross-country journey. He further added that many artists, such as Charlie Murphy and Snoop Dogg, had wanted to be a part of this show. He also acknowledged the pressure to create more positive portrayals of black characters in Hollywood, but cautioned against creating flawless or untrue characters for the sake of appeasing idealistic views. He believes this pandering won't stand the test of time and fails to reflect society or culture accurately.

Freaknik the musical could have been a hood classic. It's such a good black cartoon musical it's like first season Atlanta the animated series but with a musical ghost of hiphop& rnb it could have gone so much deeper. The only reason it probably got criticism is because Carl Jones chose to criticize black elites like Oprah, Al Sharpton, Russell Simmons, and Bill Cosby. They referenced the Boule and the Nation of Islam. But the movie was actually dope and funny I still watch it to this day. People really need to stop hating on this man

@flyguy7825 what do u mean by personal attacks? He named alot of major black celebrities that participated in the movie, and there is always what they say "truth in artistic creativity" no mater how dramatized it is.
If you've seen the movie you would know that. And if were apart of black culture you would be aware of the amount of gatekeeping and favoritism that goes on in the entertainment industry,
So taking light jabs at people who actively participate in maintaining this black Elitest hiarchy for their own interests is well deserved. People need to learn to take constructive criticism especially when what they say and do can affect a whole ethnic group of people negatively.

I personally loved Freaknik. Like I know all the songs, word for word. This was a film that I still to this day, go back and watch, and thoroughly enjoy myself.

The Freaknik musical could have been a live show. The same way the South Park guys made a live show. Freaknik had some good songs and a funny story. No body was actually offended. Boondocks was probably more controversial

I loved Freaknik the musical!! March 10th 2010. I was on punishment and couldn’t watch tv but heard of it. So stayed up till moms went to sleep to watch it at like 2 am and had to be up @530 to catch the bus for school. I didnt that morning but l still love Freaknik the musical

I didn't even experience Freaknik but that musical meant everything to me, still to this day! I cannot tell you how "I just wanna cut that niggas nuts off" lives rent free in my head. It was on Adult Swim and TH-cam and I went out my way to find it once it was removed. I'ma write AS a petition to play it at least once a year because it's fun for the whole family!

He definitely didn't. There's an entire Essence article about it from 2020, they also wrote one back when it came out they can't be found anymore. And when it originally came out it received a lot of split opinions. That's the reason why in the end, its reception was very lukewarm.
