I’d wager you’re wrong. That’s a common way to stop small 2 strokes. I’ve crashed many many and didn’t bend any by even crashing. A shop rag won’t bend a crankshaft.
I have literally started a Veron Impala kit this very day, just for fun. It has plans for some sort of escapement device powered by rubber to bring it down.

This was called control line, or "U" control.
