Haha! Thanks for the comment and I know sometimes it's hard to find good product reviews or tests and I thought this was one of those products so I HAD to make a video on it. Thanks again for the comment!
I really like the recording of that Zoom. The low cut filter on 160 Hz sounded good. took out most of the background but your voice sounded more natural. Thanks for this video.
Okay, I’m sold! I had asked about background noise recording in another one of your videos before I stumbled upon this one. This is going to be my Christmas gift to myself. Thanks for all the info, Jake!
Haha! Just responded to your other comment, but glad you were able to come across this video! Glad I could help and happy you'll be getting a great product because I LOVE mine!
That test with Lo-cut filter: 160Hz was very good, I decided to go with a cheap recorder and use the rode mic I already have for now, but this recorder is great
Hey Jake, thank you for taking the time and effort to produce this EXCELLENT video tutorial on testing the sound quality of the Zoom H1N using its different features. I had been considering purchasing the Tascam DR-05X. While both are good products, but I now believe the Zoom H1N is better suited for my purposes.
You're welcome JLH! I'm happy I was able to help! Also if you are looking at getting the Zoom H1N I have a few links in my description of the video if you want to look at it on Amazon. By the way they're affiliate links so if you do buy it through there I'll get a percentage of the sale and it doesn't cost you anything extra! Again thanks for the comment and I'm really glad the video was able to help you out!
Sorry man I would've included a test with a lapel mic but I don't have one. I used to and I can tell you from experience that the quality that comes out of the Zoom H1N is still really great with a lapel. However do keep in mind it does also matter what lapel mic you have.
Overall, would you recommend this mic for recording nature sounds? I want to record rain, thunderstorm, and stuff like that but it's just a hobby and I'm only getting started so don't wanna buy expensive equipment...
Oh absolutely! Honestly, I'd say this is probably one of your best options for a few reasons. One, it's a cheaper sound recorder/mic in the world of audio. Two, it's still a super high quality mic considering the price. And three, it's fairly simple to learn how to use it. Also, if you want to check it out, I have a link for the Zoom H1N in the description of that video. Hope that helps! Also, thanks for the comment!

@@JakeBorowski15 Received zoom h1n two days ago! And it works way beyond my expectations (I'm not a pro) Thanks for your quality time you have spend to make this video. 👌
Thank you for providing this. You helped me decide to purchase this device over another. I will be using it for audio journals, but also for acquiring sounds from my immediate environment for sound effects, and if possible, as a PC mic for some applications where I don't need wireless.
Want to say thank you for this video I have some outdoor interviews coming up and wanted to know what to use …. How far where you from the camera outside when it was mounted
Oh I totally get that. I've been using a shotgun mic run through my cameras pre-amp lately and it's just annoying to hear all that nasty noise and audio grain.
@@JakeBorowski15 Bigly. So my primary mic is the Rode SVMX. It is a magnificent mic. Worth every penny. But its heavy. And nearly maxes out my gimbal. On top of that, the preamps in the alpha hiss like a pit full of vipers. Completely wasting the potential of the SVMX. I Just Want Light Stereo 😩
Good test but i have A question ! I just purchase this and am somewhat lost ?! I have this noisey neighbor and i need to record blunt sounds (Banging on walls, dog barking, door slamming etc.) What maybe the correct setting to capture all this ?! Please note my mic is hooked up to Hearing Boost (a app (google play store) that amplify s sound for deaf people) the recorded sound come out a bit distorted ??! Thanks
For settings I think it's best to set it to 48k 24bit, lo-cut filter to 80hz, leave the limiter off, and if you don't want to worry about setting the volume you could turn on the auto level function, but I don't recommend that. It's usually best to set the gain/level yourself and you can do this with the gain dial from 0 to 10. Just set this to whatever sounds best without peaking. Usually you want your gain to peak around -9dB. Hope that helps!
Great video...I've 2 questions 1. where did you buy the dead cat? 2. Is the gain button (the 0-10 roll-able circular button) stiff enough not to be turned incidentally? thank you.
Thanks for the comment! So for the first question, I'm not exactly sure what deadcat it is. There isn't a brand name or anything on it I just remember that it was a package deal. I think I've heard of people getting the Movo deadcat though and that works good. Now as for the gain button, it's more of a dial and yes unfortunately you can accidentally bump it, but there is a lock button on the side and I think that will lock the setting a in place. Although I'm not entirely sure that it works for the gain dial. Hope that helps!
Gain is basically the microphone's sensitivity to sound. So the higher the number the more sensitive it is meaning it'll pretty much sound louder and pick up more sound. So a lower number will sound quieter and pick up less sound
Hey you are doing a great job. I just want to know how do I remove the WHITE NOISE? It's always there and I don't know how to remove that in any audio software. I just learnt to use Filmora 9. Can I do that in Filmora?
I'm not sure about removing it in Filmora, but I know some video editors have a de-noise tool. Also, there will always be a little bit of noise. You can't get rid of it completely, but another thing that could help you is raising the gain dial on the Zoom H1N to a number above 5. This is because there is a significant decrease in the amount of noise once you get over 5 on the gain dial. Other than that there isn't much more you can do. At least that I know of. Hope that helps!
Well if you're in a gym with lots of other people I'd say you should probably be using a lav mic connected to the zoom H1N. I wouldn't do much as far as settings other than set your gain correctly. But that lav mic should take care of a lot of the noise from other people and weights.
Hi!, really I like your video, one question, I need récord a orchestra outdoor, violins, piano, chellos, trumpets, etc, could I put this recorder in middle of The orchestra and record all the instruments? Thank you for your comments!
Yes I think you should be able to do that. You just have to make sure the gain isn't too high though because you may get some peaking. If that's a worry do a few audio checks if you can with the orchestra before the performance. Hope that helps!
Hey Jake, awesome video, for the 2:17 and 2:39 mic on camera tests, how far were you from the camera/mic? At around what distance from the mic would you say sound starts to not be so great?
For those two tests I wanna say I was around 15 to 20 feet away. Also, I don't think there's a certain distance when this mic starts to not be so great. You have a gain adjustment dial and you can turn it all the way up to 10. That'll give you a further distance that the mic will pick up audio, however, if you do raise it up to 10 you will notice a significant increase in the amount of noise. In my opinion this mic really shines in the 4-6 gain area. That's where you'll most likely want it set anyways if you plan on talking into it from a few inches to a couple of feet away. Hope that helps!
Hi Jake! Thank you for this video. I'm looking for an audio recorder that also does the trick of recording an interview during a wedding party. What are your thoughts?
Best way would be to get some directional mics you can hook up to an external audio recorder but if you can't do that then maybe get two Zoom H1N's and hook up a Lavalier mic to them. That's what I'd do at least
Nice video! I just bought one, looking for the accessories pack but is the foam windscreen better than a deadcat? And what is the size of the deadcat for the H1N? Thanks for share the tests 😍
Thanks appreciate the comment. So in my opinion I think the deadcat will be better because it just has more uses overall. The foam windscreen is really only good for blocking out the p noises in your audio but the deadcat will do that along with block out wind much better. As far as the size goes, there isn't really a size. All you have to do is search, "Zoom H1N Deadcat" and it should come up online. Hope that helps!
I'm pretty sure the closest deadcat you could get to mine is the Movo WS1. However, the handle I'm not sure what the name of that is or if they even make it anymore. I got that in a kit with the Zoom H1N so I don't even know where to find it.
Very good video. Excellent test I recommend this accessory Movo SMM5-B Universal Microphone and Portable Recorder Shock Mount - Fits the Zoom H1n, H2n, H4n, H5, H6, Tascam DR-40x, DR-05x, DR-07x and others with a 1/4" Mounting Screw
Great video mate... I think doesn't have to add something or make any extra questions...The only that I would like to ask is which brand is the dead cat that you use? I have seen that Zoom has one but out on the box write that's it's compatible with many Zoom models like H1 but doesn't write H1n...
The brand of deadcat I use on the Zoom H1N is a Movo branded one. I'm not exactly sure which one, but I think it might be called the Movo 2 or you could try searching for, "Movo deadcat for Zoom H1N"
One of the best things about this little recorder is its PIP mic capable, so I bought some EC272 5mm mics, which sound much better than the onboard mics...just a bit more hassle to setup.
Lol I'm definitely not an audio professional and had to look up what a PIP mic and EC272 mic were lol, but now that I know what you're talking about I agree 100%😂
@@JakeBorowski15 the onboard mics are really good. And very convenient. But for more delicate recording of nature and quiet scources etc, the h1n is ver capable with those mics. Also Lom Lusi mics are prettymuch the same PIP powered thing but dufferent.
This isn't the one I use because that one's sold out but this is probably the second best thing. I haven't used this one though so I'm not sure on the quality. www.amazon.com/SUNMON-Recorder-Outdoor-Windscreen-Windshield/dp/B07YD3PFB9/ref=mp_s_a_1_7_sspa?keywords=Windscreen+for+H1+Zoom&qid=1638189836&sr=8-7-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFLUEszREo3WEVJU0YmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTA0Mzk1NzAzUEtKTTFDQlgwNDE1JmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTAxMzkwOTE3WVE5OUE1QTBCTVYmd2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9waG9uZV9zZWFyY2hfbXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==
@@JakeBorowski15 You are. I'm barely looking into all this recording, sound effect stuff so i'm basically clueless. You made the video very simple to understand for a novice like me but now i feel confident and know where to begin with the basics.
Do you by chance know the brand of the deadcat? I’m looking for one that fits and sounds decent for my h1n and I was happy with the performance shown in this vid
I've gotten this question a lot, but I bought the Zoom H1N in a kit and they don't sell it anymore like that. The closest deadcat I can find is the movo 2 I believe it's called
Well it depends because with this sound recorder there's more noise when the gain is set to 4 and also when it's set to 9 or 10. So if you can avoid those gain levels but you may also experience a bump in noise level if you raise it during post processing so keep that in mind as well.
Thanks man appreciate it! I'd say just set it to a lower gain and that's about it. The only other setting I might change would be the lo-cut filter. I'd possibly set it to 80hz but that's something you'd have to test out. That lo-cut filter is just supposed to cut out all the lower audio. That's about it though. Hope that helps!
I'm not 100% sure. I don't want to tell you something I'm unsure about but I can tell you that the Zoom H1N will give you great audio quality at an affordable price however I think something to consider is what you plan on using your mic for. Podcasting, talking head video, vlogging, sound fx, etc. There's a bunch of things to consider and each one might change your mic choice.
Great video! In my case, I hear wind noise when moving it around even with a windscreen on. It doesn't happen if mic is stationary on a tripod. Would you know why? I have input level 40 connected to my camera as exterior mic.
A quick fix for that might be to set the lo-cut filter to something like 80 Hertz or maybe the next setting above that. If that doesn't work it might just be the windscreen itself. I've noticed that if you don't have a high enough quality windscreen or deadcat then you might still notice some wind noise when just moving it around like that. For example I have a Boya BY-MM1 and when I put the deadcat on that and record in windy conditions the mic picks up wind noise a lot. However, when I'm using the Zoom H1N with a different deadcat it wont pick up that wind noise. It could be the deadcat, but it could also be the pre-amp in the camera. I'm not sure. Hopefully that helps a little.
Yeah the deadcat I use and a lot of the other gear in this video I believe is discontinued unfortunately. So I can't really make a recommendation off of something I've never used
I would just say to set the lo-cut filter to 80 Hertz and then set the recording format to 24 bit and 48 kHz. Once those two are set just make sure the gain isn't peaking and you should be good to go.
@@JakeBorowski15 thanks so much, Jake! Ive bene binge watching your H1N videos haha! Im about to buy and wanna start my asmr mukbang channel. I also bought deadcat since it helps a lot with bg noise.
@@paolodecastro4974 that's a smart idea. The deadcat will help a lot with noise. Also if you haven't bought the Zoom H1N yet, I'm pretty sure there are links to it in the description of the video if you want to check it out. Glad I was able to help!
Great job on these comparisons. I have a question about the last feature you tested being the Gain in autolevel. If the user has no control over the gain while this feature is set to ON then does it disengage the wheel? The button lock feature does not work with the Gain Wheel. I'm wondering if putting the Autolevel to ON will it lock out the adjustment of the manual gain wheel?
Yes you're correct, turning on auto level will disengage the gain dial. That's because the zoom h1n is doing all the work for you and setting the gain automatically. I don't really recommend using this setting though because it tends to make the audio levels peak so you'll lose some detail in whatever you're recording. Hope that helps!
Hi Jake, thanks for the good examples! Was wondering the white noise/hissing sounds from the mic are removed during post-production? Or are there certain settings to adjust it on Zoom H1N mic itself. Appreciate it! :)
I mean that's basically what white noise is. It's kind of a hissing noise, but normally if your talking into the mic you shouldn't hear that noise at all. You'll really only hear the hissing if you turn the gain up really high which is rare unless you need white noise.
@@JakeBorowski15 I see, true that. I realised that the higher the gain, the more white noise you get. So ideally, would you reckon that in every situation, eg: recording nature sound, voiceover, instruments, should be set around 5-6 knob?
@@lydiachang17 I wouldn't say every situation because you'll just have to set it to whatever setting yields the best results. In some situations, yes 5 or 6 on the gain will be good, but other times maybe 4 or even 7 would work better. Those are just examples but do you understand?
Love the video! Very informative. Just a question, what settings would u recommend for recording voice audio inside a car that's turned on (for the ac lol) but not moving anywhere.
Thanks for the comment! If you're in the car with it on I'd say set the lo-cut filter to 80hz. That will cut out some of the car noise but your voice should still be heard pretty well. Other than that just set the gain to a setting where the mic doesn't peak and you should be good to go. Normally I set mine right around 6 or 7 for the gain. Hope that helps!
This is probably your best bet. I bought my zoom h1n in a kit so it came with the deadcat. This is the closest I could find to mine though www.amazon.com/Movo-WS1-Microphone-Windscreen-Microphones/dp/B00HX40OL6/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=TLLRAVRJIK5A&keywords=movo+deadcat+zoom+h1n&qid=1650572843&sprefix=movo+deadcat+zoom+h1n%2Caps%2C135&sr=8-3
Thanks. Great test. I am amazed how little self noise or amp noise you get even at gain 9. Most of the noise that might need removing isn't from the recorder itself but would be unwanted background noises. It may sound strange, but I am thinking of replacing the amazing but bulky and often too sensitive Sony PCM D100 with something more pocketable like the H1N which also would pick up fewer unwanted sounds from the surroundings.
@@JakeBorowski15 The D100 is by many considered the best field recorder ever made.Value-wise, the H1n is a lot better, especially now that the second-hand prices for the D100 have been going up after it was discontinued and they sometimes go for more than ten times that of an H1n.
@@walkedintodarkness if you're talking about the Zoom H1N I'd check Amazon and B&H, but for the deadcat and handheld thing I don't know where else you could find those
Very good video thank you for the very informative content. I have just purchased one myself, I can't seem to get the same clarity of audio as you do. Whichever settings I use with a deadcat all my recordings have a lot of static, even inside. I'm thinking I may have bought a dud or I'm doing something very wrong, if you have the time your thoughts on the subject would be much appreciated, thanks again keep up the good work!
I'm not sure what your audio does sound like. I watched through some of your videos on your channel but the audio seems fine there. If you are using the Zoom H1N in those videos then I don't see a problem. However I will tell you the settings I use when shooting videos. When I'm outside I make sure that I have the lo-cut filter set to the lowest setting I think it's 80 Hertz. Then I make sure my gain isn't peaking and trying to get it around -12dB. Also make sure you always use the deadcat. That just makes a huge difference to me. I also make sure that I'm recording in WAV 24bit/48kHz. After that I just make sure I adjust the gain peaks in post to hit -9dB. That's all I do for my audio. I hope that helps!
Thanks for responding and in those videos I used a very cheap shotgun mic attached to a galaxy s10, I have only just purchased the h1n to improve my audio quality and haven't used it for content yet, the settings you mentioned are exactly what I have been trying to use. Even in low sound environments like your white noise section in this video, the background static is constant even with the lowest gain. After some more testing and your clarification of settings I'm sure now that I have a faulty device, thanks again for the help!
Hello Dear Sir...Your Fan Here ✌️.... Sir Can You please help Mee...I just bought the zoom h1n ...but whenever I record something ......and listen afterwards....There's a "hisss" sound Being recorded in background... Although my room is proper Acoustically treated ...then also a " hiss" sound being recorded
Hi. How long it can record using Ni-MH full to zero? Is it good for recording event like kids birthday where many in the same room or is it more direction oriented? I'm trying to find audio recorder with long recording time, aa/aaa accu and for nature and family event recording like Christmas. After searching and comparing week these there are too much in the field manufacturers and models. Great review. For my headset guitar was just a bit too loud between tests had to bump sound volume :)
The Zoom H1N can go for maybe 2-3 hours on full batteries. Also for kids birthday parties, family events, and nature it would be perfect for that. The recorder also has a XY microphone so it should be pretty good at capturing sound from all around, but it's always best to point it directly at the source of the sound. Hope that helps!
I'd obviously recommend the zoom over the tascam. I've never used the tascam but I know they're a solid reliable brand. But again I prefer the Zoom H1N
I actually received the Zoom H1N as a gift and all the accessories I got with it came in that kit, so I'm not sure where you could find it. It doesn't even have a brand name or model name on it.
Hi Jake! Thanks a lot for this video! Could you please provide us with a link of the stick (tripod) you use with your H1N Handy Recorder? Have been looking for it on Amazon after watching this video, but couldn't find anything. Have a nice day!
Yeah I haven't been able to find it either. A bunch of people have asked about it but I bought it a few years ago so I don't even know how to find it. Glad you liked the video though!
Hi Jake. Thanks for a great review. Quick Q : can it be used for singing ? will it be able to capture high pitches? If not Zoom H1N what would you suggest?
I use it when playing drums in the basement, setting it in auto, because I have no idea how to deal with limiter, lo cut or gains. About 30 feet away is the furnace and I have to turn it off in order to record, my question is: The deadcat works for that huming noice?
For the low humming from the furnace I suggest playing with the lo-cut filter. That should cut out any of the low frequency noises in the room. I'd try setting it to each setting and testing it out to see what sounds best. Hope that helps!
@@JakeBorowski15 Yes it helps, I did like in your video...saying the settings and a few seconds to hear ambient noise. Thanks for your time and hope you have success in all your projects. 👍🏻
Thank you! I would like to mention what I've noticed, gain set to 1 is more like it set to 0, probably gonna record sound over 100 db or something, the gain set to 3 and 4 also are very quite by my opinion, I recorded the fans of server machine (an app of the phone show something like 65 db and the recorded sound is very quite. Is it only my zoom h1n that quite on those gains settings, I couldn't say, but from 1 to 4 gain probably is suppose to record a rocket launch. Sounds like the most usage gain settings is between 5 and 10... Why is that? Any ideas? p.s. all other settings are off.
You're Zoom H1N most likely doesn't have any issues because mine is the same way. Most things you record with it will probably have to be around 6 to 8 on the gain dial. That's what I normally set it to so you definitely aren't the only one. Also I'm not entirely sure why that is I guess so you have the ability to record a wider range of sounds.
@@JakeBorowski15 Thank you very much for your reply. I have no base for comparison and that is why I am asking about. So far I've used it about two-three times and I just noticed that. btw one subscriber more :) Have a good day.

Want to say thank you for this video I have some outdoor interviews coming up and wanted to know what to use ….
How far where you from the camera outside when it was mounted
You're welcome for the video! Glad it helped! Also I was about 5 or 6 feet away. So it picks up pretty good audio even a few feet from the camera.
I think I want to strap this to my camera and avoid dealing with in-camera pre-amp problems. Well done with the outdoor tests
@@agenericaccount3935 yeah if that's what you need the I'd 100% go with the Zoom H1N. The pre-amp in that is miles better than any cameras pre-amp.
Thanks Jake, simple tests no BS, way to go

@@JakeBorowski15 thanks a lot for your answers. It's very helpful and clear. :)
New to this thing... Just got this product... Can someone explain what is 'gain number'
Jake you are amazing man what a detailed test really will help in deciding

What settings would you recommend for Gym Settings >?

Hope that helps!
how do i get a set-up like that of yours Jake? the H1N deadcat and that small-like handle/pod?
I'm pretty sure the closest deadcat you could get to mine is the Movo WS1. However, the handle I'm not sure what the name of that is or if they even make it anymore. I got that in a kit with the Zoom H1N so I don't even know where to find it.

Very helpful thanks! Esp the noise test, it seems once it passes 7 the noise increases quite abit
Yeah that's kind of what I noticed too. I'm glad it helped! Thanks!
My Ambient sounds have some noise, is that because i use wrong grain Level?
Well it depends because with this sound recorder there's more noise when the gain is set to 4 and also when it's set to 9 or 10. So if you can avoid those gain levels but you may also experience a bump in noise level if you raise it during post processing so keep that in mind as well.
@@JakeBorowski15 So the noise is always there. İI will then test the other levels and what software do you use for editing?
Bro this was deadass the perfect video man.. nice.. what settings do you recommend for like Vlogs? I use a g7x Mark ii btw💯
Do you think I can have same quality audio or (enough) with the mke 400 ?
I'm not 100% sure. I don't want to tell you something I'm unsure about but I can tell you that the Zoom H1N will give you great audio quality at an affordable price however I think something to consider is what you plan on using your mic for. Podcasting, talking head video, vlogging, sound fx, etc. There's a bunch of things to consider and each one might change your mic choice.
Fantastic work. I appreciate all the effort you put in it.
Thanks! Appreciate it!
@@JakeBorowski15 thank you! I will try that out!

Thanks.
Yeah it's a pretty nifty little recorder. I'm not familiar with the Sony PCM D100 but the value for price for the Zoom H1N is definitely up there
@@JakeBorowski15 The D100 is by many considered the best field recorder ever made.Value-wise, the H1n is a lot better, especially now that the second-hand prices for the D100 have been going up after it was discontinued and they sometimes go for more than ten times that of an H1n.
