This has been a great series to watch while the countdown to Season 5 keeps ticking, it's fun to watch how the League and OW itself has evolved over the years. Some of the games were crazy including the Shock v Titans rivalry and I still have the Paris Eternal's Summer Showdown run in Season 3 saved on a playlist, watching those matches at 5am was exhausting but was so much fun at the same time.
I agree. The Paris Eternal Run in 2020 was probably one of my favorite parts of overwatch league ever. Watching these is also a nice send off to Overwatch before the format changes in OW2.
This was my single favourite match from any season of all time. The back and forth between the teams, the ego battles between singular players and the beginning of what is likely one of the most iconic rivalries in the league. All of these along with the chaotic and literally record breaking last map (with my team winning I’ll admit probably biased because of it) gave me literal chills throughout the entire series and i literally yelled in celebration by the end.
Really good job here, Custa, giving visibility of the details going on "behind the scenes" and showing some of the best moments of OWL, this game and others. You are too smart for us.
This playoffs and match in particular was what made me a fan of OWL. I watched it for the drops but this got me so invested and I've stayed with it since.
I kinda miss Goats sometimes. I'd never want to go back to watching entire stages of this glorious mess but these high-stakes Goats matchups were just really really good Overwatch.

Watching this reminds me of Shock's weak spots before the golden stage and beyond that. I so freshly remember Moth was a weak spot because he was known to be passive and not aggressive during that first stage which really was their only setback and after that stage Moth started to make more plays. That's crazy to remember.
I distinctly remember Vancouver titans not providing proper housing and transportation for the players, like bare minimum stuff and generally miserable conditions. Happened to the next iteration of the titans too, but no one cared cause the players weren’t as good if I am recalling Correctly. Also If I remember Dva was the character that statistically you could lose first but still later turn the fight. Lucia I think was 2nd with zaraya being the most important character for winning team fights
Such fond memories of this game, I was living in Japan at the time and explaining how Overwatch worked to a Hawaiian friend of mine who had never seen any esports. The back and forth of it made it so easy for both of us to get so hyped
Chengdu's first win vs goats was vs Vancouver, they ran 2-2-2, Ball/D.va, Widow/Hanzo, Mercy/Zen. The Titans had trouble making it to the snipers and supports, and thats what won them Hollywood.
I was one of those few people who unironically enjoyed Goats. I loved it in scrims because the teamwork and loved how aggressive you can be as a tank. Not to mention the ability to turn fights with ultimate, especially how much more common it was to find yourself in a situation to hit a 5-6 man shatter. Thanks to that this season of ow was my favorite to watch. It also helped that shock was my local team so I was able to support a team that popped off and ended up being able to dominate.
@The Lord of Entropy I'm the third. As a flex support, being able to act as a DPS on Zen while hitting fat transcendences every few minutes was a dream come true.
On the 2019 playoffs the thing that is most memorable I thought besides Shock winning was, wasn't thiz year when Reign knocked Shock down to lower bracket and the Moth reaction?
as a titans fan, this genuinely made me hella emotional. not just because i miss the roster but these matches against the shock are so amazing. this was my favorite season
I think GOATS is responsible for the most overall growth in OW thought throughout the different metas. If we didn’t have such a long GOATS phase, I don’t think OW would be anywhere close to the level it’s at now it terms of skill.
I think stage 2 finals is the greatest match ever. Season 2 was by far the best season in OWL history from a casual spectator perspective. As a fan, probably season 4 because teams were more even. But as a casual, season 2 was INSANE

Its kinda funny to read ppl talking about "Goats was fun to play" when literally 95% of the chat did not play Goats, because up to Dia / Masters everyone just played 222 or "who picks 4 DPS fast" and up to Plat 98% of players didn't even know what the Goats comp was. Back in the time of Goats I was Plat / Dia, I played around 2000 comp matches ,I played 3 "3-3" matches and only 1 time the Goats comp. The other 2 were "random 3 tanks and 3 healers without Brig"
This was the first OWL match I ever watched. Became a fan of both teams and enjoyed the rivalry narrative between these two teams. Such a shame that the Runaway Titans fell apart in Season 3.
This version of the shocl in the playoffs is my favorite version of them. Prior to this game in the regular matches, they went 4-3, losing against the gladiators and getting blown out by the titans and nyxl. However, they made it into the playoffs as the 6th seed and went against the defiant, who were 5-2 convincingly. Though, something clicked with the shock and they proceeded to make the defiant look like a joke in that game and went on to beat Philly to get into grand finals. I still watch that shock vs toronto game every now and then.
Tracer is the best example of the high-skill hero you want: trash at low level because she's so squishy and hard to engage with, and OP but at the highest skill level but not enough that she's instalocked everywhere
45:03 its bcuz of the overtime spawns too. They had a staggered overtime teamfight loss so when they capped A, titans still had the long ot spawn timer
i unironically cant wait for some good goats play to be broken down. aside from it becoming stale, people didnt like watching goats because it was hard to follow but theres so many intricacies to perfecting the comp

Yeah unfortunately allot of people just don't see those interactions/realize they are being done. Sometimes there is allot going on, sometimes they are just blind or just literally have no idea what your doing has a purpose. Like a few days ago I got shouted at by 1 of my teammates who was a dps and got real mad I didn't eat the ana nade(as dva) that was thrown from the front.(he died from it) I told him be glad I just ate the grav from behind you and the fight before that the pulsebomb that was thrown at you, that I flew in between the ana that's healing you and the(enemy) doomfist so she could live, be glad I just ate all the healing shots from enemy ana so the max charge zarya died and I bodyblocked so mercy could Res you. That whenever he hits a shot on mercy I keep tagging her so she can't self heal and he might be able to finish her off. He told me I had done no such things. I told him go look the game back and you will see it for yourself and might even learn something. 30 min later he messaged me back and apologized.
If I remember right towards the mid season, especially when it came to their matches against Shanghai and Chengdu, Fearless had a lot of problems with his ball going into the better ball comp teams, and I think the caster/desk narrative was that this played a pretty key role in Dallas struggling at the top, which is why that started and has stayed imo. Will concede that his ball looked way better at the end of the year and that it's not super fair to say anything very harsh about his ball considering he really only ever played it notably against fate or Gaga but still noteworthy
Which is super unfair towards fearless since ball issuch a team oriented character. Like it’s obvious dallas purely focused of winston comps so they weren’t ready to play ball when they realised ball was the stronger tank

There was definitely problems with Dallas not being able to capitalize when he was doing well, but a lot of ball play comes down to your solo play too, and Custa put it well talking about Hadi once saying that with ball a lot more of the time your deaths in fights are less the fault of your supports than with other main tanks, which Fearless faced too
Thinking about it, didn't South Korea play a pharah comp on Oasis vs Runaway in that showmatch? I dont remember if ball was in the game at that point, but Runaway absolutely fucked on SK in that map.
I always wonder was 2-2-2 ever truly necessary? GOATS was still good in Stage 3, however Damage was beginning to come back with Shanghai, so I wonder what would've happened had 2-2-2 not come into play in Stage 4 and beyond

During stage 1 of this season, Custa was being benched on Lucio for Kuki (a maintank player) and when asked about it, the coach at the time Moon said that “Custa thinks about the game on a different level than the rest of the team”. The real reason (according to Custa) was that him and Fate had different ideas on how to play goats and having differing opinions wasn’t good for the meta. But the meme started going around that Custa was too smart for the rest of the team.
Ngl, that's really sad he got benched for that reason. As a coach it should be his job to make them see eye to eye or at least form a plan. This is just the easy way out.
its not like goats is fundamentally unfun to play, if you main/enjoy playing any of the core goats heroes (rein, zar, lucio) or really any hero that fits well into a goats based comp then its a fucking blast. its just that it lasted so long and phased out DPS as a whole for the most part until role lock was added.
This is the other extreme in contrast to the hitscan only meta’s. I like a balance, I think that’s what made ow uniek. A hybrid between Fps and Moba. And there needs to be a balance, (rip balance in ow2) if there is no balance it takes all the uniekness and personality out of the game. The fact you could win in multiple ways, brain dead aim or understanding the game and all its moba aspects. That’s what made it great honestly. Let’s enjoy it while it lasts, until ow2.

With ANY other team he would be throwing and even against good goats teams he would throw fights. Plus when goats came out of favor, Bumper was not very good. Even s2 when the Titans were amazing, I always thought they would have won the league with a better MT.

The bottom and mid tier teams playing goats was absolutely the worst overwatch ever, but the top teams on goats was unbelievably beautiful.
