    My Mother in Law just traded in her Skoda Roomster for one of these. She likes it but I think its a bit small and plasticy inside with switchgear in odd places. But its a Toyota and should last her a long time.

    Hey bob, good little video, the new Yaris hybrid is as you said a great little car, and would recommend it to anyone, your mileage will be fantastic (about 70-80 mpg) I have the older Auris Hybrid that you actually tested years ago and i still see a constant 60-70 mpg with no problems, and if you remember i still do the same as you did in the old video of going to the shops/dropping kids off without using any fuel......dodzo

    What is fuel average of this car ?

  • @MrDieselakias
    @MrDieselakias 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Does it consume less fuel than the diesel one? No. I don't see a reason buying it since diesel-powered is more economical while being faster.

      Sometimes people would buy a car because it produces less emissions, as mad that may seem.
      Mainly it's because Toyota's hybrids are basically bullet-proof, low-stress appliances. The 1NZ-FXE atkinson engines in these are the belovedly boring 1NZ-FEs, but being atkinsons they have actual compression rations of around 8:1. By having most of the load or torque applied by the electric motors the engines in these have proven to last as long as the chassis itself. Everything about it does. The transmission is 2 electric motors and a pencil sharpener in between. The battery (while in the past unserviceable) now has products that can cell-balance it, maintaining even the most abused and dead hybrid batteries back to new.
      It's a highly-engineered drivetrain which is admirable. Just come to Ireland and it's not hard to see diesel turbo Audis, VWs, Hyundais and Fords registered in 2010, spraying soot everywhere and wrecking themselves to pieces with stop-start driving. It's interesting how ordinary owners wear these diesels out to near disrepair, who only bought them for cheaper diesel and cheaper motor tax. This is certainly anecdotal evidence, but I've seen friends' and neighbors' diesel Qashqais, Passats, Picassos, Sedonas, Mondeos and so on being sold or scrapped before they reached 10 years old because their turbo gave out, the transmission is slipping or that the rings were worn and the engine kept drinking oil.
      Surprise maintenance costs of 1000 euro kept on appearing. NCT compliance kept demanding similar or more money to bring exhaust emissions to compliance. That is for an honest repair. But even those who clean their diesels out with a bit of petrol before their test still didn't see the worth of keeping their diesels one year or two down the road.

      Have you been living under a rock? Haven't you heard of fucking Dieselgate??

    • @ryanmg92
      @ryanmg92 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hyper Horse all the current diesel fears will effect the markets say 2030 onwards but so since the vast majority of these will be sold at 3 to 5 years old on pcp with a gfv. Lower purchase price is still going to win out with diesel atm
      However in fairness just looked at the yaris specifically and the hybrid is cheaper so buy that one.
      Wasn't the same with my auris estate, hybrid was 3k more

  • @ryanmg92
    @ryanmg92 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The issue is, unless they make these ev vehicles with a min battery distance of say 20 miles and have a plug in charge option. The cost doesn't always make sense, I just bought an auris 1.6d and the cost extra for the hybrid version with the same miles and age as the one I have purchased would have been approx £3k more, based on my mileage etc the slight improvement in fuel economy wouldn't make up for that.
    If the hybrid gets to be either on par with the diesel price, or as I say can be used plug in, 20 to 30 miles so you don't use the petrol engine that often, it would be worth it but at the moment, the price premium because of extra costs + hybrid ev status symbol tax it isn't necessarily worth it.

  • @harolds789

    Considering the basic yaris petrol is already super economical, why pay more for a hybrid unless you pay london or Paris congestion charge. On a bigger SUV or Avensis then the fuel cut might work and when we ban current diesels

  • @jorgemarques8944
    @jorgemarques8944 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great review... But i have a couple considerations. We can see on the trip meeter 5.4 L/100Km... it seams good but , i own a 2016 Skoda Fabia 1.2 TSi and driving in Paris i'm getting 6.1 L/100Km.
    The Fabia is a bigger car and the 1.2 TSi is a old, now discontinued engine (replacede by 1.0 TSi) and the fuel consuption isn't bad enought to justify the premium price asked by Toyota dealers for their Yaris Hybrid.
    To conclude , i would rather take a renault Zoe ZE 40 for 20.000 € + batteries than a hybrid that doens't realy make the diference to a small displacement turbo petrol.
    thanks for the great review.

    I love all things electric. I'm an avid EV fan too. I've test driven many electric & hybrid cars on the market. I'm keen to try this one. What do you think your average MPG would be based on mixed driving without being heavy footed? I'm a sensible driver and I'm always keeping to the speed limits. Well most of the time 🤗. I would expect to achieve around 65mpg. Please share your thoughts?

    My wife is now on her 2nd Yaris Hybrid. Got her current one in October 2016. It is a really good car. We have been having a completion between us to see who can get the highest MPG. I have managed 66.8 MPG. On my wife's commute to work she averages between 58 to 60 MPG. Also the car has a "B" selection on the gear selector which helps to increase the potential charge going to the battery even more. This is used when going down hill to increase engine braking.I have a Ford Fiesta and have in the last few days test driven the New Fiesta. Its a nice car but its now so expensive for what you get. Not even electric windows in the rear on the Titanium trim. Today I test drove the petrol 1.5l Yaris manual and was impressed. So impressed that after many years with a Ford I'm going to order a Toyota Yaris.

    • @toyotaprius79
      @toyotaprius79 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      66.8 is impressive. But it must be said that B mode in Toyotas is not what you described which is correct for every other electric car today.
      What B mode does is increase the amperage output of the motor acting against the motion of the car (ie regenerative braking). But what that does is send most of that electricity to the other, smaller generator that would then spin the engine as an air pump. It's not efficient, it's designed to waste energy. Little of it goes into the battery.
      If you've drove up a big hill like sally gap, you would've experienced the car charge completely on the way down. When it's full the computer would automatically spin the engine at high rpm to get rid of excess energy. The problem is when you do that in D mode and the battery is 100% charged, you can only rely on the hydraulic brakes to slow down.

    • @dickschuurman4684
      @dickschuurman4684 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      "B" selection explained:
      en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Toyota_Prius/Driving_tricks
      Not only valid for Prius, but for every Toyota hybrid!

  • @andrewyork8208

    Bob - can you drive The Toyota Yaris Hybrid just in EV mode and stop the petrol engine from starting at any acceleration ?

    • @toyotaprius79
      @toyotaprius79 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can. You can get the pedal to travel 1/3 or 1/2 the way before the engine kicks in. It feels nice. The cars normally feel much more subdued and refined. It works up to a certain speed (~50km/h) until the car's computer deactivates it.
      But using EV mode is unnecessary. It uses up very little of the electricity the battery has. Most prius owners 10 years ago found out that using EV mode when not needed (like 99% of the time) reduced mpg. It causes the battery to drain quickly and the engine is then required to start much sooner to charge the battery back up.
      EV mode is however useful when you're sneaking out and sneaking back home at ungodly hours, or to sneak up on mofos when doing a drive-by.

    Aren't Toyota championing hydrogen?

    • @toyotaprius79
      @toyotaprius79 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hydrogen is nothing more than a PR dick-measuring contest between Honda and Toyota. It has only taken them to realise until now how far EV technology has improved in 7 years. They're also realising that their competitors have prototype EV tech that can out-compete their hydrogen fuel cells.
      Toyota has said that they've been developing solid-state lithium ion batteries that can come to production by 2022. At this time, this is nothing more than PR bullshitting, but if they're true on their word, it should be enough to put Toyota in the middle of the pack. Enough to compete against VW, Geeley (Volvo) or Daimler in the EV market, but still well behind Kia/Hyundai, Nissan/Renault/Mitsubishi, GM and Tesla of course.
      For a company that bet on hybrids early and gained immensely from it, Toyota's executives were very stubborn on their lack of faith in Electric cars. It's nothing to do with nimh battery technology (of which Chevron owns), but more of a fear of EV sales cannabalising hybrid sales - which is partially true, Prius sales in its strongest markets have fallen and failed to recover because of EVs offered by other manufacturers.
      Oh, and Honda is practically dead. They have done nothing.

    Hi Bob, I myself don't like ev because maybe I'm old school but I want the sound of a combustion engine I want to tinker around at the engine etc. I'd actually hate to test drive an ev for fear I mite actually like it. Personally I grew up with larger petrol cars and was a boy racer in the 90s and I still do love the sound of big petrol engines and tbh I don't really care about co2 emissions or the cost of road tax as after all the max we have to pay in Ireland is 2350euro,so I can drive say a 2009 plus Ford focus rs and only have to pay 2350euro road tax. Which means when I drive it it's highly unlikely that I will see even one more focus rs as ppl won't pay the road tax for them. I know we can't stop progress but I really hope I can drive enternal combustion engines until I die. I guy lives near me and he drives a shelby cobra and omg the sound is amazing.

      Electric cars are here to save ICE cars from the doom that surrounds them. The classics like that Cobra or the Aston V10 will survive but only if we start to dump the bland grey stuff that's being produced right now.

      Try an Auris hybrid, Prius, CHR or Lexus CT200h

    • @toyotaprius79
      @toyotaprius79 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on specifics.
      If you want a cheap used car, it's basically a 2004 - 09~11 Prius, the goofy one (or a big, not-cheap 3.5l V6 RX350h). Mine is at 151,000 miles on to odo and when driving it it is actually difficult for me to get less than 54 mpg (trips with passengers, fully loaded boot and heater/demister). At the moment I've been clearing out garden waste (dead and trimmed trees) and bringing it to the local recycling or bring centre. It can honestly move more than the Land Rover Freelander my parents have. Like 2 large (1m^3) garden bags and 5 normal ones. It's honestly a mini-estate car, which the inside is now covered in bark, dirt - and spiders :') ... yay...
      So I think space wise it would be an upgrade.
      An Auris hybrid estate is a lovely choice, loads in Rome apparently. However, in the United states at least, 2010-16 Priuses (which the Auris hybrid, CT200h are identical to) are more highly strung and can suffer from cooling problems with comparably smaller components to its predecessor, the 2004 - 09 prius.
      The yaris hybrid however is much more similar to the older more reliable generation and seems to show it. No idea about its space but given how the likes of the Yaris and Polo have grown massively over the years, it could be bigger than the Astra inside.
      CHR and new Prius are basically brand new cars. Not much can be said just yet.

  • @michaelowen7694
    @michaelowen7694 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The way I'm thinking is that if you want to lessen your environmental impact - especially air quality - but you only have one car then this is the one. I do mainly town driving but, every now and then, I need to do a longer journey and, more often than not, through areas with no, absolutely no, public charge points.
