I've used Joe's deflectors and they are fantastic. The mild steel is just soft enough to easily cut/trim/shape with little effort. I use rivnuts to install. Saw is coming along nicely. Thanks for showing the effects of each modification.
Stainless steel is nice until it needs to be cut or drilled. I learned the expensive way how nice mild steel is to work with, and I haven’t had any issues with rusting out.

you haven't lived until a doc has dug steel frags out of your eye ball....with a sewing needle:) i've never failed to wear eye protection since that day...very cool trick opening that muffler, joe. i never thought to try it. i switched to propane oxy last summer, no more black smoke and it cuts like a dream-way more precise.
This is great Joe, thanks for taking the time to do it. Would love to see the gain from opening up the exhaust outlet under that deflector, to the same approximate area as the exhaust port. So far seems to be further evidence that a good muffler mod (open can) is worth around 1/2 a HP.
Love the step by step power adding. You should do everything you can do without machining and get your max hp. Then do the machine work to show how much more can be had from machine work

From doing tree work all these years I’ve had a couple visits to have my eyes Dremel’d and scooped.. in the winter time ski/riding goggles work great for tree work too.

14:10 A cheap air pressure regulator can really help when full send is not wanted on air hammers. I would put air pressure regulator on a hose or two for different uses.
Can see at the end that the MM did increase peak power but oddly the graph shows that you lost the high RPM overrev area.. possibly the change of muffler affected the carb tune and a adjustment could be made I'm surprised that easier exhaust flow would do that.
Guys tell me who really professionally used these saws in production. Can they really compete with Stihl? Or are these saws not reliable, and can only be used in everyday life?
Coming from the auto/cycle side of things I can appreciate the peak numbers you are getting but as your numbers grow the powerband is becoming more peaky by the modifcations you do. Chainsaws do work in a relatively narrow powerband but what are your thoughts?
Really depends on the saw. Normally work saws have a favorable powerband. But as we push the envelope thepowerband does peak a bit higher and harder. I'll have to do some more testing as most of the time the ported version is still making more tq/hp across the entire range. Do you have a specific run/graph in mind? Might be able to do some testing in the wood to see.
I'd like to pay you to do this to my g366 muffler. I've already cut a red UNI foam air filter because the oem i think an acorn would fly through it. Let me know what i need to do to send this to you w/$$$. Tim O'Hara
Map really doesn't get hot enough. I mean it does but it will take a pile of it to keep the whole thing hot enough.👍🏻 oxygen acetylene is the easiest way.

I was wondering about an adjustable outlet that you can make quick alterations to area (while bolted to dyno) and do pulls In between to see where you stop making power. That way you can dial in the ideal combined open area for the particular port work.

Keep showing everything, what some think is boring attention to detail is a big part of the "magic".

6:06 I’ve pre-heated on the BBQ and then used a MAPP gas torch. It works great but takes longer than Oxygen/Propane Acetylene. Just an option.
I like how you use a fire ax and a jackhammer to tune a muffler 😅

Ya he’s lost some races from going over and falling off the power band! If he ever kept one on the peak curve it would be glorious!

Just out of curiosity, could you use self tapping screws to mount the deflectors on?
Not the best idea. The vibration likes to loosen those up
