    Thank you very much for the video. This has been my Achilles’ heel. I wish you had shown how to properly measure the neck, both front and back to get the accurate measurement for your neck band.

      You are very welcome. I’m pleased you found it so help. I’ll explain here how to measure the neck opening. Turn your flexible measuring tape on its edge and starting at one shoulder measure the front from shoulder to shoulder at the seam allowance not right up at the raw edge. Do the same for the back.
      This is done after the shoulder seams have been sewn together.
      Depending on the stretch of your fabric the percentage of the opening will differ. Let’s use a fabric with 50% stretch which is typical for tee shirts for example. In this example you will take 85% of the measured opening and add 1/4 or 3/8 of an inch seam allowance.
      Cut that from the width of your fabric that is on the stretch. and I like a neckband cut at 1.25 inches from the length for a nice flat neckband as it lays against the neck.
      Hope that answered your question.

    Great visual of how to do the neckband and cover stitching. Helpful to see the action of how it's done ... I always pick-up something new whenever I see tutorials.

    I’ve watched a lot of videos on how to attach a knit neckband. I declare this one the best! Coincidentally I’m working with the same pattern so what a bonus for me! Thank you so much for the clear instructions and tips 😊

    Very nice, thanks Chris. Great tip using a different color clip for the back & turning the fabric on the back seam to serge off. The reverse cover stitch you did on the tee really adds a pretty touch!

    Great tutorial…I have a question how to you measure your neck band if not using a pattern piece, so it lays flat. I need to make the neck opening larger so it fits over the head and not sure how to measure the band correctly.

    Great video. It was hard to see the stitching with the cover stitch around the neck band. If you could do a contrast thread just so we can see where you stitched that would be helpful. Thanks.

      Thanks for watching. On the coverstitch? Yes I’ll do one with contrast thread . For this tee I really wanted to wear it the next day so I went with matching thread. .

    Great tutorial! Especially showing serging off the fabric and where to sew the coverstitch just under the neckband. I was coverstitching on the neckband before 🙃 also helpful to see how you stretch the band as you go. I think I have been stretching it too tight 😂 Thanks for taking the time to do this video. I have this pattern and now so feel much more confident in sewing it.

    Chris M Shapiro Hi Chris. I just watched your video and I found it very informative. You referenced you would do an example of neckband cover stitch with contrasting thread. You also said you would show us the reverse cover stitch on the black and white neckband. That was gorgeous btw. If you’ve done those, can you please direct me to those links? Thanks🌷

    I don't have a pattern, but want to duplicate my favorite t-shirt.
    When you have to stretch the neckband, I presume it has to be shorter in lenght than the neckhole. How much shorter (in percentage) does it have to be to be nice and flat against the skin?

    • @sewjourns7128
      @sewjourns7128  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is not an exact formula as it is fabric dependent. If your fabric has about 50% stretch with great recovery say, 5 % spandex then you can use 85% plus seam allowance. If using something like french Terry with about 40% stretch then you may need 90%.
      Pin your band and baste it on first if you are unsure if it is the correct length.

    Lovely. I feel more confident starting my teeshirt journey. Can an overlooker be made to do coverstitching as in your reverse coverstitch by disengaging the blade?

    • @sewjourns7128
      @sewjourns7128  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Irena, an overlocker is only for serging. A coverstitch would be a sewerage machine. There are combination machines as well but just turning off the knife will
      Not make it a coverstitch.

    Thanks for the helpful video. When you serged neckband to bodice, did you have differential set to 1 because you yourself controlled stretching the neckband, as needed? Also, I would love to see how you did the neckline you are wearing with the serger stitches exposed--looks very nice. Thanks again.

    • @sewjourns7128
      @sewjourns7128  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Susan, please forgive this very late response. I never saw your comment until
      now. Yes your differential is set to N normal or 1 if that is what is neutral for your serger.
      On the tee I am wearing I used a reverse coverstitch. I’ll see if I have a tutorial on that. If not I’ll do one soon.

    Great tutorial. I have a question. I usually use a wide coverstitch. I’m going to try the narrow coverstitch next time. Did you say you sink the right needle into the seam? I usually line the foot 1/8 from the seam using one of the lines on the foot. Both rows of stitching of the coverstitch show. If I sink it into the seam then only one stitch line would show. Is there a right way or is it a matter of preference?

    • @sewjourns7128
      @sewjourns7128  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ivy. I use a narrow coverstitch for topstitching around most neckbands. I love a wide or even triple CS. It really depends upon the application. When I’m
      Topstitching a neckband I like the needles to be just under the band not on the band. So I line up the edge of the neckband with the edge of the presser foot

    How do you measure for the length of the band on a ready made shirt- no pattern piece

    • @sewjourns7128
      @sewjourns7128  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Meg, if you are using 4 way stretch fabric with 50% stretch and excellent recovery such as cotton Lycra, which is the best choice for a band then measure the opening on the neck hole all the way around at the seam allowance and take 85% of that for your neck band. I like mine cut at 1.75 inches wide some like 2 inches. Then you’ll fold in half and press.

      @@sewjourns7128 Thankyou sew much. This is one skill I have never mastered. I have 2 neck opening waiting for a band.

    • @sewjourns7128
      @sewjourns7128  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@megcharette7640 my pleasure. After you cut your neck band you can baste it on to be sure you have the correct length before you commit to the serging.

    0:09, I realize that this is an older video but for future, please control your music volume. It blares out of nowhere. It doesn't match your speech volume level. Also, using lighter color fabrics with contrasting threads is much easier for the viewers to see. Please consider getting a overhead tripod for a topical view with a zoomed in camera closer to the needle and presser foot. Thank you!
