@@samkeller5823 it’s been nice and sturdy if I’m mindful of it being more sustainable to wear and tear. It’s worth it being much more readable, to me. I don’t read my omnis, just because they’re a hassle. I just finished this and it held up well
I really really want Azrael collected in a Compendium. Most of it never collected and gives more of a chance to see the full run finally on our shelves.
If this had been an omnibus, I'd have upgraded from the trades. Very happy for the fans that pick this up and are reading the material for the first time though! Hopefully we get a volume 2. Hopefully we get ANY volume 2 for a DC compendium (Green Lantern Kyle Rayner, please!), the only series I can think of that got a volume 2 is Starman, and that was a while ago.
Actually preordered this and the Tim Drake Compendium!! The price is really what sold me on buying it 😅 Hehe I’m not bold enough to buy an omnibus yet but this type of format seems perfect and reasonably priced for me (which is why I’m also excited for the DC Finest books)! This one came in the mail Wednesday but I still haven’t had the chance to read it but I’m super excited! Thank you for the reviews 😄
It really is a good series. And I appreciate you sharing some of your journey with us and why this particular collection holds a special place in your heart. Great review Bub 🤠
In for this and Robin but will have to hold off a couple of weeks, between X-Men and Excalibur I've picked up 9 Epics this month and the first four Sandman thickies.
Now they should do Robin Dixon compendium next! Tim Drake is so awesome in that one! Cluemaster n Stephanie stuff was tight! Oh wait its coming out in July! Wow
Issue 18 was the first Nightwing book I read and was instantly hooked. Can't go wrong with Deathstoke and manbat. Scott McDaniels became one of my favorite artists and big reason why Nightwing is my favorite character.
This is the series that brought me back into comics after a few years away. I adore Scott McDaniel's artwork and Chuck Dixon is a master story teller! Don't think about it just pick it up it is absolutely excellent!
Nightwing’s been my favorite character ever since I started reading at the start of Taylor’s run. And with how much the Nightwing fandom was glazing the Dixon era I had to pick this up. I’m 8 issues in and I’m loving every second of it. So thankful that we have this since I wasn’t able to get the trades. Nightwing has been a very special character for me as well because of how optimistic he is despite seeing all of this darkness. Unlike Batman, he healed from his trauma and as a person who lost one of their parents at an early age as well, was always a hero I could look up to. This compendium as I’ve read this supports that claim with some absolutely fantastic art. I’m so happy I bought it when I did.
The trade paperbacks from 2017? Hah! I've still got my original "Darker shade of Justice" trade from 2001! My first introduction to comic-Nightwing, and still one of my favorites....Scott McDaniel is a treat. It takes some time to get used to the fish-eye perspective, but the acrobatic-sequences he draws are just great! If this were an omnibus it would be an automatic-buy. But, as it is, I don't think a giant paperback is better than my more standard sized paperbacks, even if it does have a little bit of new material...
Good overview Omar. Although don't 100% agree with ur assessment. Imo the Nightwing Compendium cover isn't that flimsy at all. At least compared to a epic, I've had a lot worse from Marvel. It could be because it does not have that glossy finish which makes it feel thinner to yourself but not to me. Either way I am really pleased it was collected in a thick trade. Honestly if it was a omni I probably wouldn't have picked it up at all. This is all new material for me.😁
I hope this one does well enough that we'll see a vol 2! The only Nightwing books we've ever seen in non-tp form were the Tim Seeley Rebirth run. There's the New 52 omnibus, but that's been OOP for forever!
Thank you for sharing ur experience Omar. Its cool to hear comics helped you out of a dark spot in life. Talking about the tough times is hard but necessary to show people struggling they're not alone. It really isn't done enough. Its why I am a bit more open then I used to be.
Great book! Could have done without the minis at the beginning though. This is terrible early Greg Land art. Must've been before he discovered the light box. Scott McDanials art is superb though! Very underrated artist. His run here on Nightwing and his run on Daredevil over at Marvel are standouts. I haven't read any comics for a bit now, just wondering if he's still working in the industry?
I’ve always wanted to read this so made an order of it, Superman war world and the new transformers trade. Question Omar. Is this run probably going to be just two compendiums?
I hope this format thrives. I absolutely love this and I wish DC had been doing these types of compendiums all along. Just huge, thick-a$$ bricks of comics. No nonsense of skinny little trades released over a decade that never even finish a series, just COMICS. Finally. (Also, sorry omnibus fans, but I do prefer the readability of the softcovers vs. hardback.)
Whats the difference between omnibus and compendiums other than one being softcover? This one looks tempting and I think there’s another compendium coming from Dixon’s Tim Drake run. Great video as always!
Omnis have a better treatment putting in nice words, i mean better paper quality, more extras like covers, layouts and of course it’s a hardback, but not all it’s bad with a compendium because compendium’s can have more issues than an average omni, i mean Starman compendium have over 60 issues more than a omni
Never cared for Robin, Nightwing, or sidekicks in general. Then Oma comes along recommending Berserk, East of West, JSA, IDW TMNT, Annihilation, and Mutant Massacre....so if he says Nightwing is awesome....then the vyKING is going to read Nightwing
How do you guys handle reading these? Seems awkward no matter how you do it. Sitting in a recliner, at a table, on the pot. Just dosent seem comfortable either way.
It’s an absolute travesty this is not in omnibus format. All kinds of old and obscure series getting omnis but not Nightwing? WTH, DC? Same story with the upcoming Robin compendium. Compendiums should not be a thing in my opinion. It’s just too many pages to have only a paperback cover. Sadly, I’m going to have to pass.
🤔 love Nightwing w The Titans though. I hate they used glued binding & It's NOT an HC. Idk, there's some DC 80's/90's books that kinda of lost my interest compared to Marvel at that time. I'm probably gonna skip this
DC is so damn weird with their collected editions. Why was this not an omnibus? Or Man of Steel by John Byrne? At least those got hardcovers. This seems like a cheap, lazy way to put out this material. I'm also reminded of Absolute Killing Joke not having the John Higgins colored pages on the same quality paper as Brian Bolland's recolored pages. They put Higgins' on crappy newsprint paper. Just such a strange decision to relegate the objectively superior coloring on cheap newsprint.
Sarcasm alert. Love a table of contents that indicate the page number for each issue but don’t display any page numbers as they relate to the overall volume. 🤦♂️🤷♂️
True. May be an issue if you reread many times but if you only read it every several years it will still last a long time. I still have trades that are at least 30 years old that are fine. They have mostly been read at least a dozen times. How long do you want to it to last?
If I buy this, I will not buy the omni. If i do not buy this, there will be no omni.

This book feels so nice to hold. I love paperback compendium, like an omibus but easy to read and half the price
Personally, I think compendiums are harder to read than omnibuses because paperbacks are barely able to hold that much weight.

Omar - so this doesn't double dip on material in the Nightwing omnibus?
No that run happened after the one in the compendium
whats the difference between an omnibus and a compendium
Omnibuses are oversized hard covers. Compendiums are standard size soft covers.
Compendiums are basically "should-have-been-an-omnibus" books.
