    • @VincentPrice111

      Obviously it is, because of all the rigorous practicing they do for 12 hours a day, and competing against others in matches in front of an audience for entertainment purposes.
      Many places define an athlete as someone who works together on a team against another team or other people for entertainment purposes. I think that's fair.
      It gets to the point where I have to wonder if they're just stupid, or they just refuse to think or consider it, when an argument so sensible is placed right in front of them.
      They're professional, they compete, they do it for a living.

      Professional athletes don't just sit in chairs doing nothing, homeboy. They are forced to have a good diet and are highly encouraged to work out. So before you tells someone's son that they are a stud and a failure for enjoying something that is a multi millionaire business, why don't you get off your high horse and research for yourself instead of giving a biased assumption. Then come back at me and provide a real argument.

      @KrittR 8 ปีที่แล้ว +100

      It's the mentality that has been pounded into the minds of our parents generation that gaming is bad and spending time on the computer can go nowhere for people. What parents don't understand is that if you are good enough to compete on a professional level then you can make a living by doing it. It's the same thing with quitting your job or dropping out of school to do TH-cam full time.

      Chess is a sport, the only place to not consider it a sport is the UK. Hell the International Olympics Committee even deems Chess a sport. The defining attribute of "sport" is competition. Sport does not make you an athlete, athlete is used as a general term for sports which is wrong, Athletes can range from people who just exercise to people who play soccer in their back yard every day. Athlete is a term for someone who likes to stay fit and do lots of exercise, sports is about competition.

    • @Mac48383
      @Mac48383 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No No yea I guess my point is they don’t fall under football, basketball, baseball, etc . So they shouldn’t be called athletes cause you don’t have to be athletic to play video games. It more of a intellectual “sport”. But even calling it a sport is still debatable. It fall in with “sports” like chess and you wouldn’t call a chess player an athlete now would you . I don’t even consider chess a sport smh . And esports professionally gamer is more appropriate than esport athlete. Nothing athletic about playing video game

    • @StackACat
      @StackACat 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Sneaky Dab Emoji actually, taking a golf swing requires a very specific sequencing of movement and control of power, so yeah, athleticism is definitely involved. However, by that very logic, gaming also requires very specific sequencing of movements by the hands as well as tracking of the eyes. If skets (shooting) can be part of the Olympics, I can't see the argument why gaming cannot.

    2) I wish they would let Fox make his point, they kept interrupting him like morons.
    3) "Why isn't an engineer an athlete?" Bitch, because engineering isn't a game. video games are games, Basketball is a game, Baseball is a game, Football is a game, Soccer is a game, Chess is a game, Poker is a game, Golf is a game.
    4) "If you don't break a sweat, I don't considered a sport" Glad that people like her don't get to decide such things. Poker, Chess, Nascar and Golf either don't break too much of a sweat or none at all, and yet, they still are sports.

    I have been an athelete and a gamer my whole life. The difference I have noticed are is having fast reflexes, reading a play, endurance and things of this nature. The similarities in both of these categories are there but the difference is physical activity versus mental activity. Gaming requires you to think more frequently with no relaxation until the game ends (depending on the level at which you play), where most physical sports have downtime between plays that allows you to rest your body from the bursts of energy used.
    My two cents.

    • @VincentPrice111
      @VincentPrice111 10 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      There's also the speed of physical inputs to think about. I played a lot of Smash Bros, but the professional players can do 7-10 button inputs in a single second (similar to APM of say a Starcraft player) and I can't do it that fast.
      They're so precise with movements that it's insane, and that kind of makes sense as to why people above 25 are said to have long hit their peak and will never be as good as the younger players.

      Vincent Price The speed of physical input was covered under reflexes but that gives an even more in-depth response to it than I cared to type. A split second reaction to turn and shoot, hit an ability, etc. can mean life or death in a video game, it doesn't occur that often in sports.

    • @Rikent
      @Rikent 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I guess that is true for most american sports however in football (soccer) you have to be constantly keep track of the other players. For example as a defender you have to keep track of the 1-3 opponent's forwards and also 2-3 defenders that are on your own team to have a good defensive line and also you have to adapt accordingly as the game goes on. The only down time is after 45 minutes and then its on again for another 45 minutes.
      The game that the scholarship is for is League of Legends and there is a surprising amount of similarities between soccer and league and the main thing that separates the two is that league is not an athletic game. Which is also why people have started to categorize it was an e-sport and not as traditional sport. To be competitive in both games you need everything you mentioned previously, good reflexes, able to read a play and act accordingly, endurance to train for long periods of time (mainly mental) and a competitive drive.

    I think the key distinction to make is that between "athletics" and "sports". I don't think gaming can be considered athletic simply because that is by definition physical, but it can be considered a sport, which I think is more defined by its competition. Gaming does not require athleticism, but it does require a large amount of commitment, focus, and passion, and just as much as any other sport, and this is where the primary focus of the debate should be.

    Seriously, pro-gamer or not, gamers tend to get the low rung of respect in society as the easy butt of jokes. Massively popular 'nerd' TV shows like Big Bang Theory and comedic movies love to poke fun at the gamer archetype and gamers have to claw at every ounce of respect. Even more so if they self identify as a professional gamer.
    Good on Rick Fox for standing out for the pros and in extension, the everyday gamers as well!

    Gaming also takes a lot of physical exertion. Forearm, hand, and finger dexterity. Players on averages do about 400 movements per minute on a keyboard/ mouse and achieve upto 160 to 180 beats per minute which is similar to what happens during a very fast marathon. Sports doesn't always have to be big movements even the little ones count.

    The only reason this argument comes about is because of the stereotypes associated with gaming.
    All we want is acceptance in mainstream media and right now the view is that gamers are lazy, unhygienic, live with their parents and just sit on a couch all day and play games. The reason we're trying to incorporate words like "Athlete" and "eSports" is to break down that wall.
    If people can learn that playing video games at the professional level like LoL, Dota, CoD, Starcraft, etc. requires just as much dedication, focus, skill and intellectual ability as a traditional sport, we'll all be happy.

      Flynn O Flenniken Basically is the physical aspect of gaming if you want to play at a professional level.
      I mean, you can't simply just say, oh I can easily play a game for 8-10 hours straight, no it just doesn't work that way. People tend to get bored of gaming after about 4 hours straight, and yet these professional gamers do it all the time every DAY. What sports athlete trains for 8-10 hours EACH DAY? That's just overkill on the body.
      Funny to see people always saying it's not a sport because there is no physical aspect to it. E-sport, fine. But it's still a sport.
