A fuel tuner to adjust the engines computer so it can do the stoichiometry math and take advantage of the new increase of oxygen in the fuel/air mixture needed for proper ignition and effect burn off. Also they have laws and restrictions on what they can and cant do to sell a bike in a certain place. Some places do not allow performance level modifications, and I do not expect any company in the world which mass produces to individually engineer each bike that comes off the line for its destination. Stock is perfectly fine, Engineers know their stuff and work in their restrictions. Ive see the majority of bike problems come from people doing their own work instead of a stock air intake failure. just saying.
I have a 2013 FLTRU I just bought. I will run it from Wisconsin to Sturgis open road most of the time. Freeway speeds. What air cleaner do you suggest will work good for me? The bigger engine this bike has is way more power that the old 86 FLTC I had so I'm happy as it is. Just thinking about gas mileage.

Dock why won,t the Heavy breather fit on my 2020 Heritage classic 107 all they offer is a smaller version and it does,t look as good looking for the chrome one , can you Help PS. Bike is under warranty
Hello Doc I have a question to ask you, I change the air cleaner and thinking to remove the cat on my bike 2017 M8, do I have to reprogram it or I don’t have to, thank you.
I have a Milwaukee 8 114 engine on my HD Softail. If air intake is so important, could you drill some holes in the top of the air filter cover plate to increase air flow? Just wondering?
Thanks so much for your advise. If this is done in conjunction with a re-mapping and or, a stage one upgrade, would that made a difference? @@LowCountryHarleyDavidson
Yes. I understand funds are low and your wants but this upgrade is a complete package. You are allowing more air in and out. You will need more fuel. This is the safe thing to do and it will allow the full potential of upgrade that you spent your hard earn bucks on. Thanks ~ Doc
You may get away without a re-tune if you only change the filter. If you combine that with other other mods like different pipes, you'll need to do a re-tune.
Harley is a very old and experienced motorcycle builder. Am I the only one who wonders why year after year, model after model Harley never gets the air intake right? And Harley isn't alone. Yamaha, Suzuki, Ducati, BMW.... Even Honda who makes millions of bikes can't get it right. And it's such an obvious and easy to correct mistake that any schmuck with a pocket knife can make it better. Or maybe, just maybe, the engineers who built the bike know what they're doing and the air intake is fine as it is?

Sound emision rules. Simple as that. The air box is a inlet soundkiller, like your muffler is for your exhaust. And yes, the intake makes ALOT of noise. Also, most manufacturers have no problem making 200+ HP with the stock airbox. Replacing it sometimes makes performance worse. And airbox is sometimes used to create a pocket of turbulance free air the engine can intake easily, instead of an unreliable air supply with turbulance. There is a reason why Buell always had massive airboxes.
Ok ! buy what happens with the Air Mass Flow Sensor (I think this is the name...) ??? do I simply disconnect it??? it wont give an "error warning" on the computer??? Please anyone answer this to me!! thanks
What is the point of a better air filter ? Same exhaust system, same timing, same compression ratio, same cam, same stroke, same engine size. What will this do for the engine ?
Yeah wanna know how you improve your Harley , call fuel MOTO . Screaming eagle parts are a joke. All designed to work together for epa bullshit and the street tuner is a joke. remember your 5” pistons have to breath through a straw. I have a 17 sg with the jackpot XXX pipes and big cone sucker and power vision tuner I make 106hp. You’re welcome . Dealers are a joke they don’t even truly dyno tune they download maps from SE website and put them to your bike and charge you for bullshit dyno time .
if you think Big Bee89 is just being critical of Harley , he's more right than you think, he has a proper stage one, like me, my 16 SGS has Rienhearts, intake, also Power Commander tuner and has been professionally Dynotune resulting in 88hp and 114 torque. At 50mph I don't have downshiftto go up a hill like I did before. Its a known fact that Harley tune their stock bikes lean to meet EPA standards, just about everybody change pipes, which will lean it a bit more, add intake and a tuner is required to see any gains, whether its Screaming Eagle or any of the many tuners out there, the simple advice is always go with the tuner that your professional Dynotuner recommends.
I have always just washed my stock filter and saved my money. And I have always saved a lot of money by changing my fluids myself.
What a beautiful motorcycle I see on the backing plan!
It's a wide glide, almost as nice as the NightTrain!
Doc, wearing a stethoscope around your neck....love it, genius!

Changing air cleaner will not improve MPG. Keeping the air element clean and all the oils clean will help the most. Thanks ~ Doc
Doc. If I have aftermarket slip-on mufflers , so if I change to a stage 1 air cleaner. Do I need to retune my bike ?????
So, just changing to the K&N air filter doesn't need a remapping?
Yup, bike needs to be retuned for proper performance.
Do you need to install a fuel tuner if you change just the filter to a stage 1 cleaner??
Yes
No, if it’s M8.
Going to the heavy breather air cleaner, does anything else need to be changed?

How do you clean a air filter. I have an 08 Heritage softail Classic
I find it interesting how they can make the stock parts look like junk..... I paid $20,000 for the stock parts, they are not junk
Correctomundo. Stock is not junk. It's not the best either.

Technically yes, however you then risk damage due to weather and you’re altering the overall design as a whole which may change performance.

My biggest concern with those filters hanging out in the wind is. The rain! I ride in the rain with out much hesitation. And i mean rain, real rain
Jack they make covers that will let air in and keep rain out.
Me too, and I have an exposed filter. Get a rain sock and youre good.
Rain water in the intake air is a fact of life and no problem. Air filters get wet all the time.
If I change my air filter to a stage 1 and my pipes do I have to get it tuned just trying to save a buck

I'm going to guess no. It's not that much more air. Carburator? Yes. Fuel injected no.

Hi like bring my bike in charge oxygen sensors to wide Band n resumption it Ty’s tunner its 2007 CVO110 dyna
Mike write to my Email address with the details....Doc

Alex Ferr or maybe they are restricted by production costs and most customers want reliability and performance is an afterthought

It’s just a money grab. A good opportunity for one too, nothing more nothing less.

How about making it right the first time???

@Donald Goose Why just turbo? Why not pretend he was talking about using it on an engine with twin superchargers & nitrous?
Naturally aspirated & turbo are two different animals. Not very often is there a turbo on a bike.
