Great video! Here's the problem with K&N, my wife bought a used pickup truck that had a K&N upgrade. She knows nothing about trucks besides filling them with gas and she always brings them to the oil change place for service. Most quick oil change places and even most repair shops won't offer to clean your K&N filter, with a paper filter most places will swap them out real quick and charge you for it. K&N is really for the DIY guys. I saw one guy that said the best way to oil is to use an oil bottle with a tip and put a small bead on the top pleats all the way around, keeps you from over oiling like you would with a spray can.

If you read up on the performance of K&N filters you'll see they actually allow more dirt to pass thru into your engine. More air yes, but more dirt too.
Hi Doc - I would like your opinion on an Arlen Ness Big Sucker stage 1 air intake and use the original football shaped cover. Does the Big Sucker with the original HD cover still provide maximum air or should I get the Arlen Ness chrome cover for the best performance?

The kit probably came with a K&N type air filter. With the already oil infused filter there is no room for the mist oil coming from the breathers to be absorbed. My suggestion is to clean the filter and spray a light coat of K&N oil on the outside. So there is a chance for the filter to absorb. …Doc

I'm a fan of better performance, just my opinion, but the K&N type performance filters leave me cold when I hold one up and see thru the tiny holes in the gauze... The cleaning and re oiling process is a science and an art, if you get it just right, its only just right for a short while.. and the gauze is opening up ever some more.. and larger particles will make it thru. Take a look at a clean paper element filter and you will not see holes..
As a long time dirtbike rider and Jap bike mechanic I never believed paper was better than oiled foam or fabric. My mechanic school teacher, an experienced auto mechanic, said paper was better. I never believed him. After buying a Sportster and fitting an S&S filter and K&N element and seeing those holes I started to believe. There's a test on Google which shows paper filters better and flows better.
@@redtobertshateshandles I do believe a open foam filter could show a slightly better flow rate, and if it is perfectly oiled, but that perfectly oiled is difficult to achieve, and it will dry out and be in constant state of change.. oiled to drier or dry and yikes, image how much dirt will then pass when its not oiled enough. For me, its the paper filters that have no openings and no need for oil. Now I know there is a huge industry of aftermarket foam filter makers, and retailers that will be pissed for my comments..but people can choose as they want, but think about what is important to you, and your bike's resale value.
Good Morning from Fort Erie Ontario Canada across from Buffalo NY Border. I have a 2013 FLHTC and had a stage two installed from a local HD dealership. I know when cold you may experience backfire from time to time however, yesterday I was out for a few hours and kept experiencing backfire more often than I like to sound like a scene from Sons of Anarchy. I have only put in high octane and a buddy suggested I put in seafoam to help. I wasn't sure if it was a compensator or needed to have my bike serviced or something I could fix? Thoughts and thanks for reading this.
Gordon thanks for writing. There are a lot of questions on our end. Was the bike Tuned on a dyno or just loaded with a download? What kind of mufflers did you choose? Large no baffle mufflers or short pipes will always “bark”. Also the more aggressive you are with throttle with acceleration then shutting down the extra fuel will back fire. You could check your exhaust. A loose pipe will allow unwanted air into the pipe and create more backfire. Bring the bike back to the dealer and ask if the can help tune out some of the excessive back fire…..Doc
ECM will compensate for it if that is all your doing to a stock bike. K&N filter is money waster. Oil collects dirt eventually dries out. then its no better than a stock one. Been using the the Screaming Eagle filter kit and dry filter since new 09 FXSTC with 45K miles on it. On my 2nd. filter. Wash it per directions with Dawn dishwashing soap ,rinse let dry. Sturdy enough to blow dirt out of it with compressed air few thousand miles or more if desired.
That question has been a much discussed topic. H-D states in their performance catalog a tuner should be added but their map selection does not offer a map for just a performance (K&N) addition. Thanks ~ Doc

My M8 114 (stage 1) seems to suck all the pink oil out of the k&n while idling for just a few minutes after service. Not sure what’s going on. It’s a stock replacement filter. Maybe a bigger filter is needed.
So what about the little drips of oil inside the filter cage, at the bottom of the intake, I see people adding hoses to direct it out, is it really something that will hurt the engine if it's just a drip every 500 or so miles ?
Hurt the motor no. The drips are the example of the amount of oil collected inside the air filter that was too heavy to be sucked into the motor. Thanks ~ Doc

This is a good and common question. Sliding on mufflers No. The reason you chose the K&N air filter was, quality, servicability and it flows more air! More Air = need for more fuel. Motor will run better with a Tuning device (Tuned by a great Tuner) and that's why your modifing parts Right?...Doc

Good morning Doc, with the Arlen ness big sucker style air cleaner have you ever heard of anyone having issues riding in heavy rain and does that pre filter sock that you can buy make any difference in heavy rain ? Hope you and your family are doing great !
I use an outerwear pre filter on my k&n, recently it was time to clean the filter. I noticed that it keeps turning white again after doing some heavy riding. What would cause it to dry out? Not enough oil on it? The ore filter soaking up the oil?
Harley-Davidson has upped there injectors for some kits. Most of the time it is when a larger throttle body is used. The 131 with larger throttle body comes with 6.2. Out on the market, larger motors with larger cams and larger valves are using 8.2-10+ injectors. You are correct that stock injectors can handle most performance upgrades. The Dyno tuning can help make that decision according to how hard the injectors are working to supply fuel. Thanks ~ Doc
That is a good question. I can only tell you I had a customer who has a performance build. it was tuned with the HD extreem air cleaner ( oval and open all around ) a month later he wanted the Heavy Breather installed for more leg room. Just for knowledge we put the bike back on the dyno. The Air/Fuel ratio were needed to be adjusted for optimum performance. The switch to the Heavy Breather did not create a dangerous lean area...Doc
No I do not. There are so many exhaust systems on the market with Pros and Cons. Most of the time this dealer stays with Factory exhaust. Not enough experience with the High Priced Exhaust now on the market....Doc
For the best performance, yes. This combination uses ALL the available adjustments the ECM has. Which would be fine IF you ride in the same location with the same weather and temperature year round. But that is unlikely cause we love to ride everywhere. Thanks ~ Doc
There was a company years ago that tested several types of after market and oem air filters. K&N was the worst for filtration and load capacity. I won't use them.
Yea I read that also. I have a 2014 limited and have been using the stock air filter for eighty thousand miles and been washing every five thousand miles l, it still looks and works fine, don't waste you money on the K/N I read that report with the dyno comparison and not worth any gain in power

This is what I have seen on the dyno. The Heavy breather tends to favor the Torque numbers and the High Flow favors the HP. I was building a 124 Heritage. tuned with the High flow. Customer asked to switch to the Heavy breather. Immediatly lost 10 HP gained 3-5 torque..He opted for the High Flow....Doc
Have they improved the filters over the years. In the early 2000s I used them on sports bikes with carbs. While using the K&N filters it would notice particulates in the carb bowls This never was the case with the disposable paper ones so I stopped using them after searching forums and finding others having the same issue / concerns.
There’s quite a debate over these filters , almost all mechanics don’t promote using these filters because of what goes through the filter into the engine and fuel delivery system

I have harley 48 Which air filter and exaust i install on my harley 48 for increase power and tourq
Great video. Thank you
What about the servicing of the screaming eagle filters that you had on the table? Thats why I watched the video and you said nothing about them
I apologize for not fofilling your search for information. I would hope your SE air filter came with instructions. K&N offers a cleaning kit with instructions…Doc
Great tip. Thank you!
Thanks
If I add a k&n and slip ons on my 2022 street glide special. It already has the sock harley oval ventilator will I need to have it retuned?
Some sites say no. I prefer more fuel with this modification...Doc
Good morning Doc, with the Arlen ness big sucker style air cleaner have you ever heard of anyone having issues riding in heavy rain and does that pre filter sock that you can buy make any difference in heavy rain ?
Hope you and your family are doing great !
The open filter suck in rain. Yes the rain sock works or a panty hose..Doc
Thanks Doc! I'm getting one!
I use an outerwear pre filter on my k&n, recently it was time to clean the filter. I noticed that it keeps turning white again after doing some heavy riding. What would cause it to dry out? Not enough oil on it? The ore filter soaking up the oil?
A light K&N spray will be soaked into the element, also congrats on a motor that draws air so strong it is taking the oil in!....Doc
thanks
Good videos doc, when are larger fuel injectors needed? Guessing a programmer can push stock injectors a little?
Harley-Davidson has upped there injectors for some kits. Most of the time it is when a larger throttle body is used. The 131 with larger throttle body comes with 6.2. Out on the market, larger motors with larger cams and larger valves are using 8.2-10+ injectors. You are correct that stock injectors can handle most performance upgrades. The Dyno tuning can help make that decision according to how hard the injectors are working to supply fuel. Thanks ~ Doc
Thank you Doc ;)
Hey Doc quick question if I replace my air filter stock one with a cone one do I have to adjust carburetor 2005 harley softail deluxe
Good question. It is my opinion that any change to the Intake side (allowing more or less air into the motor) will effect EFI and Carb bikes....Doc
I use a 50/50 mix of rubbing alcohol and mineral oil. Shake, mist, and install. Alcohol evaporates, leaving thin layer of oil.
Interesting...Thanks for sharing....Doc
Thanks doc👍🏻👍🏻
would i need to tune my bike if it already has a high flow and has been tuned but to change it to the heavy breather intake?
That is a good question. I can only tell you I had a customer who has a performance build. it was tuned with the HD extreem air cleaner ( oval and open all around ) a month later he wanted the Heavy Breather installed for more leg room. Just for knowledge we put the bike back on the dyno. The Air/Fuel ratio were needed to be adjusted for optimum performance. The switch to the Heavy Breather did not create a dangerous lean area...Doc
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson awesome, thank you doc
Do I need to retune my 17 Heritage if replace stock with a k&n filter
No...Doc
Hey do you have a vido on exhaust system sir
No I do not. There are so many exhaust systems on the market with Pros and Cons. Most of the time this dealer stays with Factory exhaust. Not enough experience with the High Priced Exhaust now on the market....Doc
Thanks Doc.
Thank you Sir
Do you spray oil on the brand new air filter ?
No,they come pre oiled.Fit it on the bike and that’s it until it needs cleaning and then you re-oil it.
Hey doc, k&n with slip on mufflers, does it need any tuning?
For the best performance, yes. This combination uses ALL the available adjustments the ECM has. Which would be fine IF you ride in the same location with the same weather and temperature year round. But that is unlikely cause we love to ride everywhere. Thanks ~ Doc
Great information
There was a company years ago that tested several types of after market and oem air filters. K&N was the worst for filtration and load capacity. I won't use them.
Yea I read that also. I have a 2014 limited and have been using the stock air filter for eighty thousand miles and been washing every five thousand miles l, it still looks and works fine, don't waste you money on the K/N I read that report with the dyno comparison and not worth any gain in power
@@deanphillips8270 No, it was an independent company. It cost them at the time $1500 per filter to test.
Engineering Explained on you tube also tested them and they got the best results with K&N compared to a stock filter and another high performance filter they tested
Here’s the vid th-cam.com/video/GS69owXpGdY/w-d-xo.html
I'm all the way in Belize. I can't just pick up a cleaning set. How can I re-oil my filter?
If you were using a foam fliter, clean and use light oil, kneading it till covered. But a K&N is designed for their red light oil. Internet order and delivery by mail? You might need to return to factory dry filter
because of location?..Doc
Hi Doc, my 2yr old breakout air filter ( P/n 29400298 )has started rusting slightly is this normal?
Albert I do not know where you live, where you keep the bike and how often you wash this Breakout. I can tell you this air cleaner is not made out of Stainless so Yes it can rust. Should it is a hole another story....Doc
like i always said you are the best doc
Hey Doc, for oil spray. Is it ok if i use WD-40
Absolutely NOT!
Thanks!!!
Will the chemical continue to work for a long period of time even if not driven much
Thanks sir
Thank you for taking the time to watch....Doc
Hi Doc
Can you run a K&N filter without a SE tuner?
completly stock bike? yes...Doc
Good video
Thanks for the visit...Doc
Doc Thankyou for the advice 🙏🇮🇳✅
Thank you for watching and you Email....Doc
Don’t use high pressure water either.
I really hate the way new k&n filter leaks that nasty red oil they use once the bike gets hot.
I agree the filters come with too much oil ….Doc
These flow less air and catch less dirt than paper filters. Advantage is they are reusable.
Please share your statistic, testing and results for all of us to see...Doc
Hi Doc . Is there any real significant difference in air flow rate between the conical SE Harley k and n filter options and the SE wedge kn that you had on your table ? I have a stage 2 done with all SE parts and tuner on my M8 107 .. would I benefit ? Thx in advance
To be more specific doc, I meant heavy breather verses high flow .. any real difference ?
This is what I have seen on the dyno. The Heavy breather tends to favor the Torque numbers and the High Flow favors the HP. I was building a 124 Heritage. tuned with the High flow. Customer asked to switch to the Heavy breather. Immediatly lost 10 HP gained 3-5 torque..He opted for the High Flow....Doc
Top video tiger 🐅
I love how he says the oil doesn’t restrict airflow then literally
Said they sprayed the oil to restrict horsepower when tuning
Thankyou…..Doc
He said they added MORE oil so it would restrict and put out less horsepower. A normal light coat is not restrictive.
I put them in the dishwasher. Works great.
Have they improved the filters over the years. In the early 2000s I used them on sports bikes with carbs. While using the K&N filters it would notice particulates in the carb bowls
This never was the case with the disposable paper ones so I stopped using them after searching forums and finding others having the same issue / concerns.
There’s quite a debate over these filters , almost all mechanics don’t promote using these filters because of what goes through the filter into the engine and fuel delivery system
@@talkingrock7011 that is right .I'am surprised doc Harley is recommending these aftermarket parts, you better watch out doc Harley The big mother ship (Harley Davidson) will shut you down like they did Million dollar Bogen.
I don’t use oil. Works better without
Dose a Hyper charger work better on your Harley are not
It is considered a Performance Air Cleaner. It is not my 1st choice....Doc
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson what is your choice
“It’s good to get clean fresh air into your bike!!!”
So why does Harley-Davidson junk it all up with crankcase oil blow-by???
EPA…..Doc
again doc... why doesnt HD just give us the best parts to begin with.. its not like the bikes are cheap
Epa restrictions... big government
🙏🏼👍🏼
The K&N filter will not improve or increase the power on your motorcycle. It will make the air filter cleanable but that’s about it.
Why can't Harley install K&N from the get go ? Harley sells us junk and we need to replace most all parts . Seat, bars, air filter, pipes, cams, pistons , ggg.
Harley-Davidson has always believed it is up to the owner to customize. So the Factory fits a standard paper filter. Thanks ~ Doc
@@LowCountryHarleyDavidson .... For 20,000 - 40,000 they could provide parts on the bike that we don't have to replace. It's not so much that we are customizing it but making it better like the seats are crap, suspension are junk, and engines have many problems. I'll never buy another Harley.
👀👂👍
Hey Doc, How is DNA Air filters for my Harley?
I don’t have experience with DNA but they are close to a K&N filter. Thanks ~ Doc
This is my kn filter now, the one he's holding in the video, it was in when I bought the bike ;
p/n 29244-08 641223 I want to throw it away and use a standard non-oil air filter,
(the oem filter for my bike is not shaped like this filter). Can anyone give me a p/n
for a standard non-oil filter that will fit my bike since it has the after market cage
now?
